Very good Clinic for care of your pets. They maintain comprehensive animal records over many years, and this has been my go-to place for my cat's for the last 17 plus years. Both the support staff and the veterinarians are very kind and caring. They provide a wide range of prescription and over-the-counter medications and other supplies necessary for many stages of the animals lives, and medical and other kinds of care. I'm very happy with the service I have received over the years. They are always careful to explain the cost of the different kinds of services provided, and to Taylor and adjust what is provided to the budget that you either can't afford or are willing to spend on your animals, and to adjust treatments accordingly. I strongly recommend this Clinic for care of your animals for either short-term or long-term care needs. Read Less

My dog Kofi is well cared for here. The staff is very kind and very helpful. Kofi loves her vet doctor, Dr. Larson as well. My dog is 16 years old and I think I have received good care and important information on aging dogs. I also qualify for a health care plan each year which I take advantage of. I think it is helpful to get discounts on care. The neighborhood has changed and it is hard to find a parking place but they have a little parking right in front if your dog or cat cannot make the walk from elsewhere. I brought my dog Monster in about 6 months ago for a mass his back toe. They biopsied it with a needle and sent the cells in to a pathologist. A mast cell tumor was completely ruled out, and they said it may just be scar tissue, but that a sarcoma could not be ruled out. I thought the scar tissue thing sounded odd, but hey I'm not a vet. I just went back in because I could tell it's gotten a bit bigger and they told me the next best step would be to amputate his toe (1500 dollars) I immediately felt weird about it without knowing for sure what it is so I called my old vet in Seattle. She told me there are two other ways to biopsy it by sending a piece of the tumor in before having to go as far as amputating his most weight bearing toe. Thank god for her or I would have never known this and paid for a surgery that I might not even need. I'm honestly disgusted as I feel like this place is majorly out for your money just like a lot of other corporate vets. I absolutely won't be returning and will gladly drive up to Seattle for the biopsy and the surgery(if he needs it) as it's hard to find a trustworthy vets office these days. I wish I could get my money and my time back as I could have had this biopsied months ago and known what it was long ago. But we all know that's not going to happen. The employees here have never been rude but I also never felt as welcomed or like they truly enjoyed seeing Monster when we came in like my old vet did. It was always so comforting walking in to my old vets office.I strongly advise spending your money and getting your precious pets care elsewhere. Read Less

They've gone through some changes the last few years and I finally had to leave after many years. Mistakes happen, but they forgot to tell me I was due for my cats annual a couple months after the fact. I've been going there for years, so I have no problem with making the appt. What finally made me decide to leave was refusing to fill my cats medicine and refusing to give me her blood results (from appts I had prior to them Discovering their oversight) until I got in for the annual. I made the appt promptly after them catching their error which was two weeks away. Holding my cats blood work and medication hostage to cover their mistakes was very ethically wrong. As a long time customer I still have no idea why they would treat us this way. Very disappointed. This could have all been dealt with more professionally- but alas, our relationship has ended on a sour note. The best thing about shopping for a new vet was that I found Dr Davies by accident! Shes the only reason why I had chosen Pet Samaritan. So aside from the poor treatment (they still haven't released my blood results from a week ago) I managed to be better off when I left! A little light after a grim and disappointing experience. Read Less

These folks are great. They are the best -- friendly, helpful, and the doctors are very knowledgeable. They will give you numerous recommendations of what to do and what to expect if your pet has a problem, and the treatment plans outline the steps and the costs. They also have pet insurance, which is very helpful. If you go there a lot, by all means get the insurance! If you have a parrot, I recommend Avian Medical Center in Lake Oswego -- they really know birds there, completely. Pet Sam's logo is kind of a misnomer since a parrot is strongly prominent in its logo. However, when I had a parrot 5 years ago and brought him in for a routine procedure, the vet tech actually seemed to know more about parrots than the vet (this vet is no longer there-- not sure about the vet tech).I have been going to Pet Sam for years and years-- am now with our second dog, and he gets the love there as much as our previous dog, if not more! The staff at Pet Sam have practically become family this past year. I can't express how deeply grateful we are to have Dr. Klau and the team taking care of our senior dog Tilly during her battle with an autoimmune disorder and subsequent reaction to medications. Dr. Klau was invested in helping us find a solution to help save our girl and provide her with the best quality of life possible. The staff (thank you Leslie, Mariel, Lee, Corey and others!) were so kind and supportive during through her whole illness and really made us feel well taken care of and informed. During her treatment I had to leave town for a family emergency and they even helped me connect to an incredible dog sitter that could help with her special needs. I can't begin to express how grateful we were to have the team at Pet Sam take care of Tilly, they treated her as if she were one of their own and I'm confident that she would not be here today if it weren't for the personalized care of Dr. Klau and the team. Tilly is fully recovered and we are so happy to have her health restored. I can not praise Pet Samaritan Clinic enough! For six years, my dog was a patient at a high end veterinary clinic on Powell and I was always impressed by how professional they were. When my dog needed an expensive procedure, I decided to get a second opinion from Pet Samaritan clinic and they were so good with my dog that I chose to make them my primary veterinarian. And the procedure cost about 40% less than I was previously quoted at my other vet. My dog is a rescue with a history of abuse, and he can become very nervous and agitated when going to the vet. On our first visit, the staff were very patient with my dog, and the veterinary technician allowed him to sniff all of the instruments before she used them. She used a calm voice and demeanor to put him at ease. I couldn't believe how well he did during his visit, and I will never take him back to his old vet. Dr. Klau was extremely patient and kind with my dog and kept me informed via phone throughout his surgical procedure. Pet Samaritan Clinic also offers an amazing deal on a pet health care plan, which reduced my dog's surgical costs by about 25%. The staff is thorough, patient, and so nice. I moved to this area about a year ago and have been taking my cat and boxer mix, both elderly, to see Dr. Klau since. He always takes the time to explain what he thinks is going on with their health and the rationale behind his recommendations. When I brought my dog in to have a lump checked out, I was worried that an expensive biopsy would be the only way to find out if it was cancerous. Instead, Dr. Klau sampled some of the fluid, looked at it under the microscope, and was able to tell me it was most likely a benign fatty tumor (but also gave me signs to watch out for that might indicate otherwise). This solution saved me a lot of money but still gave me peace of mind. I also really appreciate Dr. Klau's holistic approach - just like any good "people doctor," he always tries to get a sense of my pets' general behavior, nutrition, exercise, etc as indicators of how they're feeling.Although I have not purchased a pet insurance plan from them, on my last visit I received their "loyalty discount," which made the prices even more reasonable. The front desk staff and techs are always helpful and friendly, although I sometimes have to wait 5-10 minutes to check in or out. That and the fact that there's no discount for buying several months of flea control for cats at once are the only reasons I gave four stars instead of five. Overall very very happy with the service here. Read Less

I have a number of experiences with them. there  is very different care from different vets. I have had very good experiences but the reason for the one star was from my last experience.  my dog was very sick. I was doing all I could for her. she needed a feeding tube but vet insisted on x-rays to look for cancer first... $800. not needed but I had no choice. the dog was sensitive to anesthesia. finally a feeding tube. I asked for a large bore tube but they only had a smaller tube that wouldn't alloy me to give her food. we went back the next day. she said that was the largest tube on hand. I said then they should get a larger one. seems pretty obvious. I picked one up that they arranged from another vet. they said it could be done without anesthesia without hurting her. when I got her back the vet found it funny that my old dog put up such a fight. she had a stroke they failed to notice? the rest was awful and she died a few weeks later. I suppose one should always closely monitor and use your own best judgenent. I would be very cautious going to them. Read Less

My dog was having some scary symptoms that worried me enough to find a local vet since my usual vet was booked for the next week. So I chose this place based off ratings and locations. $56 later I was told he needed two teeth pulled and a mouth cleaning ( because I was told his teeth were really bad) then sent me a quote of over $1800, yes you heard me right. $1800 for a 14lbs dog to have teeth cleaned and two teeth pulled as they seemed to be the issue. Ruled out anything else or trying antibiotics or any medication. Just straight to pulling teeth. Something didn't seem right about this..I was able to make an appointment the following week at my vet. Here's what happen at my vet:he said his teeth look GREAT for 10 years old, they could use a cleaning but not completely necessary . That no teeth or moving so there would be NO reason to pull any teeth. $20 later I got an antibiotic to see if his symptoms improve, if not, we rule out the bacterial infection and move on to a different medication. You can imagine my frustration and why I decided to write this. Apparently they saw a new customer  they could get $1800 out of without even offering to try anything else. Or maybe that's just a poor call on the Veterinarian. Have no plans to return or recommend to others. Read Less

I started going here after adopting a FeLV+ cat. The shelter that I adopted him from takes their cats here.I'm a student, so my financial resources are limited, but I prioritize my pet's health to the extent that I'm able. I signed up for the wellness plan to get discounts on office visits and etc. I haven't shopped around much, though I imagine that I could find cheaper pet care in town. I will say that my experiences so far have been empathetic and helpful in this regard -- I've had numerous conversations about the cost of various treatments, I've received referrals, and I've received free samples of things. Everyone that I've encountered here has seemed focused on helping me get the best care for my animal, in whatever way that's achievable for us.We've only been in a handful of times in the past year and half or so, but I've found the folks at Pet Sam responsive and caring. I've been squeezed in for same-day appointments and next-day appointments (after calling to inquire about an issue), and I've never had to wait for more than 15 minutes in the lobby. (I guess that hasn't been everyone's experience.) It's not a spacious building, and it can get a bit crowded, but it never feels too chaotic to me.Some of the folks here have known my cat longer than I have (from his shelter years), and they're always really sweet and seem excited to see him. I've been to other vets in bygone years and had mixed experiences. Pet Sam has been really good to us. Read Less

Just reviewed my bill for euthanizing our rat, for having a huge tumor, at $90. Now knowing that the humane society will do the same procedure for $5, I called to inquire as to how that could be. We took our rat for an examination in December to consider options, including euthanasia. At the time, Dr. Ewing advised Euthanasia as an option and we decided to have the rat put down in February. Apparently, we were charged for another required "exam" to determine if euthanasia was appropriate; even though she had already given that option in December. She requires this if the last exam has been over a month prior. We scheduled the appointment to euthanize the rat, not have an evaluation. We were not going to bring him back home and that was clear. There was no need for another exam. One star for gouging. Consider the humane society. Read Less

Have you ever left the Vet feeling ripped off? Well its not a great feeling.I brought my very healthy Boston Terrier in because he ripped a nail. He does this all the time and I like the Vet to clean it up nice for him so it can heal. Its happened plenty of times, its no big deal.Well Pet Samaritan charged me 126$ to clean his nail? How can you justify this?Well they said its 55$ for the exam? I said what exam? You mean when the Vet looked in his ear and his mouth and said hes a very nice looking and healthy dog. 55$ for that?I didnt want a exam, all i wanted was for you to clean his nail up. Thats it! I have been to a emergency vet on a sunday because my regular vet was closed and they charged me less than this place.Very dissapointed, i wont be coming back here. Read Less

On the recommendation of a few friends, I took my older cat Blueberry here for a problem claw and some dermatological issues. I had heard that they do pro bono work for a no kill shelter with many elderly cats. They were not only able to see her that day, but also got her records transferred from her previous vet. Blueberry is an indoor only pet and is not at her best when going to the Doctor so I was nervous about how she would take to this experience. The location is very convenient. The waiting room is small and sparse and not the most comfortable and exam rooms and not fancy, but the staff was warm and welcoming and the service was my main concern. While waiting to see the vet, one of the Vets came out to talk to a woman who was distressed about her cat and she started to cry. The Vet was very compassionate and understanding and immediately invited her to the back to finish the conversation. It was a testament to their bedside manner. . During the initial exam, the tech was gentle, kind and caring in a less than ideal environment.  She put me at ease even though Blue's behavior was less than stellar. The Vet was also great. I was able to feel comfortable that my old girl  was in good hands. The tech stayed with us the whole time to act as a second set of hands on my nervous girl so I could just stay out of the way and be in Blue's sight line for comfort. They did a thorough exam, explained to me what the issues were, what they felt should be done and the options of how they could do it.  They ended up taking her in the back to do the procedures so they could wrap her up in a towel and they were only gone a few minutes. They asked me before they did it. They fixed her claw up, trimmed all her nails, popped her kitty pimple (No joke!) and offered me a few different options for antibiotic administration and let me know the price differential upfront. All in all, she was in much better shape then I had feared and we are trying her on a new diet to see if we can get her skin issues under control that way before exploring more expensive options. Overall, my first experience there was great. Don't expect a fancy building with lots of bells and whistles, but do expect friendly, compassionate staff and a lot of seasoned experience. Thanks Pet Samaritan.Blueberry and kitty momma Read Less

This place is amazing. I'm so glad I found it and that it's so close to my house. I'm new to Portland, and finding a good vet is always a challenge. They are very nice here. From the office staff to the assistants to the doctor. They are friendly and very knowledgeable. They made us and my furry little trouble-maker Corgi feel right at home and at ease. They are thorough and answer every and all questions. They outline exactly how much everything will cost before it's done, so there's no surprises. Best of all, they offer a Pet Insurance plan through them, that is SO worth it. For about $300 or so a year, you get half off many of their services, visits, hospitalization if needed, and you get free vaccines. It's a nice thing to have and it's definitely at a pretty reasonable price. Read Less

Read Less

These folks are great. They are the best -- friendly, helpful, and the doctors are very knowledgeable.

Read Less

We recently had to bring our sick pup, Nellie, in for care, Dr. Ewing, without hesitation, gave the plan of action to get Nellie feeling better and within 24 hrs, she was. Dr. Ewing cares for her patients as if they were her own. Can't ask for anything more than that from your pet's doctor. The rest of the staff have been nothing, but great too. Thank you Pet Samaritan!

Read Less

We just adopted a kitten from OHS last weekend and I was able to get a same-day appointment at Pet Samaritan today. I emailed them our kitten's health records, and Dr. Klau was already well-versed on her history by the time we got there. I really appreciated his thoroughness and the compassionate demeanor displayed by him and the vet tech. I am so relieved to have found a clinic like Pet Samaritan,  it's really eased my new-mom anxiety. The prices were much lower than I'd anticipated, and we got a quote for our next visit's expenses as well. I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks so much! Read Less

It is not too difficult to schedule an appointment last minute or get a walk In appointment. The office staff and technicians are nice and good with the animals. The check out process can be slow. Pet Samaritans prices are very high, I was quoted over 400.00 for a next day urgent procedure for my dog but ending being able to get the procedure complete the same day at Dove Lewis for half the cost. I had asked the vet about getting the procedure done at Dove Lewis same day and she said well you can do that if you want, you'll spend way more money going there though. At times I find the supervising veterinarian to be a bit condescending and passive aggressive which is disappointing. It is a small office that gets the job done.Read Less

Read Less
