Portland Animal Clinic

Portland, Oregon
General Info
Veterinary services at Portland Animal Clinic in Portland are integrated gradually, depending on the pet’s sensory processing and routine adaptation needs to accommodate every Oregonian household. Animals commence the entry process right from the start of the visit. The staff observes their movement around the room, times how long it takes them to settle, and notes which sensory inputs (touch, sound, smell) they respond to. Examinations include checks on hydration, skin elasticity, limb mobility, dental health, coat condition, and body weight balance. Simultaneously they will discuss changes in sleep patterns, feeding routines and household energy. The Portland Animal Clinic offers a wide range of services such as bloodwork, vaccinations, dental care and prevention, mobility treatments, surgical and long-term care discussions for pets. The services can either be performed one by one or simultaneously, depending on what approach the pet prefers. Some families choose to have multiple staged visits while others rely on the resources given after a single visit. Each plan stems from the ability to follow through and takes into account factors such as caregiver emotional stress, pet resilience, transportation availability, and household schedule habits. Appointment sessions have spots for questions, stories, and notes which are priceless to both new and long-term users. Portland Animal Clinic helps pet families in Portland and surrounding areas of Oregon integrate healthcare into the natural rhythm of their lives rather than something to fear or put off which establishes opportunities for connection through consistent wellness practices. The team offers specialized services such as cardiology, dental care, deworming, emergency care, and grooming. Clients highly commend the practice’s staff for their dedication and commitment to providing individualized care tailored to each pet’s specific needs. Whether it’s a routine check-up or a complex surgical procedure, the clinic guarantees that your pet will receive the best possible care in a comfortable and friendly environment. Advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities like House Calls, Internal Medicine, and Livestock/Farm Animal Care are accessible to expedite your pet's care.

Only good experiences with my cat Gaby here. She is a particularly challenging patient, being older and having hyperthyroid. Dr Castle is knowledgeable and competent. She is considerate of your budget also, informing you of the costs, alternatives, and not over-prescribing nor pushing "extras". You can always call in to chat with the doctor and messages are always returned promptly. A big plus of this practice is the availability of home visits and pickup/dropoff service ($20 extra). Our pup hurt her leg playing frisbee. Having moved to the cultural district about a year ago, we had not yet needed a veterinarian. Portland Animal Clinic came highly recommend by another condo owner. We called the clinic to see Lucy and it was about 10 minutes until they closed. I could not believe this clinic, they stayed open for us! They got Lucy's records and had her in and taken care of within minutes. So Lucy is diagnosed, I am calmed down and I start to think about the bill, after hours, exam, medication. I could not believe how inexpensive my bill was. Everyone from Dr. Castle to the techs were wonderful. I highly recommend you visit this clinic when your fur-baby needs TLC and you need a financial break.Read Less

I sincerely hope that people who read reviews notice that the clinic is under NEW OWNERSHIP. I left my previous vet clinic (where Dr. Erin Castle used to work) and I sought her out, because she was the shining star of that previous clinic. When I discovered that she - and some of the wonderful staff from the Hillsdale clinic - had started a new clinic, I didn't care that it was farther away from my house - she's that good. My cockapoo, Ruby, now has a 2-year history of being traumatized by vets, but Dr. Castle and team are helping her get over that. In addition, they are extremely competent, well-versed in latest technology as well as alternative methods, transparent and interactive in all procedures, and very, very kind. So thrilled about this new addition to our neighborhood! I have worked in the Veterinary field for many years but recently needed closer to home care for an ailing cat and was excited when I saw this clinic was under new management. I had less than ideal experiences with the Animal Medical Clinic on SW 14th and had never even tried this clinic before as the building was in such disrepair that I thought it was closed. Since meeting Dr. Castle and her crew (Kelly is lovely and Adam is always very helpful) I have stopped looking for anyone else and will only refer people in the neighborhood to them. Kind and attentive, fairly priced and perfectly located. They always seem happy to see us and even texted me pictures of my kitty when she was boarding with them over a holiday weekend. Let me say that I have met a lot of groomers and as a whole they are a very odd bunch, but not here. On my first visit, Lindsay, the only groomer at the clinic, came out to met me and my girl. We spent about 15 minutes together as I explained the haircut I wanted. Guess what, when I picked her up she looked like what I asked for. I had my pet spayed there and while the procedure was successful I found the were not immediately helpful or forthcoming with aftercare information. I had to call and ask if it was normal to see some spot bleeding in my pet's urine and they said yes but it would have been nice to have been informed a little beforehand. I was told I could speak to the Dr before the procedure was performed and he had a slight demeanor/tone of being inconvenienced by my desire to ask questions beforehand. You have to ask a lot of your own questions and probe for details, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect certain questions to be addressed without the need to probe. At the office itself though the staff try to be friendly and accomodating, I just wish they were a little more informative at the outset. Read Less

when I first moved here, I had a working interview with the clinic. The first thing I noticed was the standard of cleanliness was quite poor. Old building, poorly maintained and very dirty. When I started to get involved in the work there, I learned that ""Dr."" Tulacz was very abrupt with people's pets. He was rough and lacked any kind of gentle or soothing touch. There was not enough attention paid to patients in hospital and they were not checked in on enough. While walking by the kennels, I looked in on a small dog who had just been spayed and she was bleeding all over herself and the cage. I interrupted his appointment to inform the DR of this, but he brushed me off and told me it was inappropriate to interrupt him. The dog needed to have attention paid to the blood and cause of it. It went un-treated for over 1/2 an hour. This is absolutely unacceptable. The boarding room is no different. Many of the dogs sit in there own feces and urine for hours. It may be due to a lack of kennel staff or perhaps it was an overly busy day, but the conditions ranked amongst cruelty conditions. His manner to his staff was also very off. He treated his technicians poorly and in a very chauvinistic way. I only lasted there for a few hours. I later learned of the reputation this clinic has, and my experience is certainly not the minority. I would never take my animals to Dr. Tulacz. I wouldn't trust a thing about the facility. Research the place if you are thinking about taking your little family there. Ask to be with your pet during procedures, and ask to see the conditions of the back and kennels. They have filthy conditions to hide and I think you will find that they will decline if you request to see the treatment area. Read Less

In my experience, you have to treat people with respect to get respect. I don't know if that is what is going on here with the negative reviews, but ...I've seen some real high-strung people taking their pets to this vet (any vet, really...people get excited about their pets), and the staff and doctors deal with them the best they can. They took really good care of my cat, who finally needed to be put down at age 19. The doctor came to our house, so that my cat didn't have to suffer the car ride and being at a place with so many smells that terrified her. It was very loving and kind, to us and to our cat. We were a new couple to Portland and chose to go with Portland Animal Clinic because it was the closest vet clinic to us. This turned out to be the worst decision we have ever made for our pet. Over a period of 3 months they made up ailments that our puppy was having, only to treat these supposed problems with expensive and toxic meds that had very serious side effects. Dr. Tulacz is truly a ""poke and hope"" vet, who always turns to harsh meds without conclusive evidence to back it up. We went to Pearl Animal Clinic after our puppy's skin problem was getting so bad she was biting herself and bleeding, and they discovered she had an ear infection that had gone completely undetected. This was after we had paid for 4 full examinations from Dr. Tulacz, who failed to even lift up her ear once! Whenever we walk by from the street we hear yelping animals who sound like they are in pain. They never let us view any of the procedures they were doing to our pet, and the clinic was always dirty and smelled foul. I can't believe we took our puppy here for all of her vaccinations and checkups when we could have paid the same price to take her to Pearl Animal Clinic, who have a staff of caring and cutting-edge technicians and vets. Dr. Tulacz also pushes the Science Diet on any client, telling them it is the only food that will work for their pet. After doing our research we found out that Science Diet is the fast food equivalent of dog food, even though it is the same price as all the natural food brands. Don't make the same mistake we did by taking your business to Portland Animal Clinic. He is outdated and needs to retire. Don't allow him to treat you and your animal with the blatant disrespect we experienced. Read Less

This vet suks! Last year I took my indoor-only cat for his rabies and distemper shots and the guy insisted that I get the leukemia one too, even though my previous vet said it wasn't necessary because he was an indoor cat. The wait was terrible too. They kept me waiting for an hour beyond when my appointment was scheduled claiming their clock stopped and they had no idea what time it was. Plus they had the wrong file and couldn't find the files I had faxed over. They weren't very professional or courteous to my cat and sent me on my way with a scared angry cat lying in a pet carrier covered in his urine and feces. I'll admit he doesn't like trips to the vet, but whatever they did to him in their back room, it wasn't followed up with a clean-up. Then when I took my other cat in for shots the vet didn't want to give her the rabies shot and told me not to get her licensed with the county. When I insisted on her having the shot the vet said he was supposed to report it to the county, but that he wouldn't. . . but that was followed up with various urges for me to get shots I didn't need and special food. It felt a little like black-mail to me. I was unaware of the need for a cat license, but then when he told me not to do it and that he wouldn't report it, he really shifted the power balance, making me fearful if I didn't pay for his add-ons, he might report my lack of license to the county. I have no problem with licensing my pets, I just didn't know about it. I have since gotten the cats licensed and will be shopping for another vet when the next shots are due. Read Less

I took my dog here to be groomed right before Thanksgiving. I asked for him to be clipped short, but when I got him back, the poor little guy was bald! In the middle of winter, the groomer had clipped him so short you could see every little freckle on his skin. He also had razor rash/burn. I mentioned the razor burn to the vet tech when checking out, she seemed nonchalant and unconcerned. ""I don't know what that is. It should probably go away."" That was the only answer I received. My dogs skin was so irritated, he was running around like crazy trying to ""run away"" from the pain. I called them on day three when he was still in pain, they asked me to bring him in for a no cost consultation. I don't use this vet, but I agreed because I wanted them to see what they had done to him. Surprise! They said it was an underlying problem all along! The vet was on the defensive, completely insensitive and rude. He would not listen to the possibility that it could have been done by their groomer. When I insisted that his skin had been razor burned, he dismissed me with ""clippers don't burn, they're not hot."" Thank you very much, but I'm not an idiot. My dog was red and raw and there were obvious clipper abrasions on his legs and head. When he insisted that it was a skin condition, I asked why they hadn't mentioned it when I checked out or when he was getting groomed. He didn't have an answer for that, but he said he had it in his notes, he didn't know why it wasn't mentioned to me. All of this, but they did call me in the middle of his grooming to tell me his vaccinations needed to be updated and his teeth needed a cleaning. They were ""kind"" enough to write up a $350 estimate for the job. The visit ended with the doctor forcibly yanking my dogs head down when I got up to leave. I asked for my money back for the grooming and they kicked me out of the clinic. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! I left in tears. Please, Please don't take your pet to this place! Go to Burlingame Vet Clinic. These reviews are interesting. I am presently looking for a vet in the general area and ran across this Clinic once again. I took a former pet (deceased now) to this clinic years ago and had a terrible experience with this insensitive, incompetent vet. Dr. Tulacz was far from compassionate and basically told me that all animals were here for our entertainment only. His attitude was terrible and I could tell he could have cared less about my cat. It was interesting to read that the others were just as unhappy with his services. I remember he tried to add on fees to services that were never rendered. My cat suffered a lot under his horrible care. Don't go to his vet. He is the worst Vet I have ever experienced. Read Less

NEGLIGENT!!! Most recently I took my two dogs to board there for five days, and to be groomed and bathed the morning I picked them up. The larger dog had a joint swollen to the size of a tennis ball, which they failed to notice despite having bathed him that morning. I saw it when I brought him home, and immediately brought the dog back, where they saw the joint, acknowledged it was swollen, but never apologize for missing it, and not notifying the vet. You would THINK that boarding a dog in a vet clinic would mean you had well-trained staff to notice things like this. The vet did examined the dog free of charge, and administered a steroid injection to reduce the swelling. However, he did not inform me of any side effects this would have, and when I called to ask him, only his staff answered my question. He never called. I ended up taking the dog to Dove Lewis ER because my dog couldn't stop peeing all over the place, and they said it was due to the steroid injection. Another thing that has occurred several times with this clinic is that they hunt for extra charges to put on the bill. I have primarily used them for boarding, so they are not our primary vet, but they have often called my primary vet to ask what shots need to be updated, even if they are not needed at the time, and they tack on a physical examination fee too, WITHOUT NOTIFYING me. So the bill is ALWAYS a surprise. Another incredible way they try to add charges is to charge 5% if you use a debit or credit card. So I am finally sick and tired of them and with this last event, I am through with them. If there were a minus rating, I would go minus 10, because this facility is just out to steal your money and they don't even take good care of your dog. Don't go if you care about your dog! Read Less

I swear I called them everyday for the first week with some pretty dumb questions ( If I do say so myself), but they alway took the time to anwser them. Also it seems to me that they only recommend services that are needed. It seemed like the staff really liked my dog. I would recemmend bringing your pet here. Read Less

My pet was very sick and although I got the diagnosis for my pet's problem at another clinic I chose to get him treated at Portland Animal Clinic. I switched clinic's because the staff at Portland Animal Clinic took the time to fully explain what was going on with my pet. Unlike at the other clinic where they just told me I had one very expensive option. Portland Animal Clinic explained step by step what they would be doing to treat my pet. They also explained the reasons why my pet may have gotten ill and what I could expect after treatment. I also got an estimate for services so I knew what to expect cost wise. The staff also made me feel like they cared for my pet like he was one of their own pets. I could not ask for a better experience during a very trying time. Read Less

I had taken my cat to another ""chain"" clinic because he was not eating. This horrible clinic advised me to euthanize my animal. I took my cat to Dr. Tulacz for a second opinion and my cat's lived another 2 years. Although we eventually had to put my animal to sleep, thanks to Dr. Tulacz he had 2 more years of quality life. If I had listened to the other Dr. at the ""chain clinic"" I would have not had all that extra time. Read Less

I have been taking my pets to Portland Animal Clinic for over 10 years. When I call the clinic, nine out of ten times they recognize my voice and ask how my Goldie is doing. Dr. Tulacz is my docter every time and I see Carol, the main vet assistant every time I am in the clinic. This has been the standard for 10 years. This makes me feel that I am getting the best care possible because they know me and my baby girl, Goldie. From friends that have gone to other clinics, I hear sometimes the same docter is not even on staff anymore when your have a follow up visit. The other staff members are also very careing and wonderful and the clinic is not expensive. As a consumer who considers her dog a family member, I would not take her anywhere else. Read Less

when I first moved here, I had a working interview with the clinic.

Sure, they try to get you to purchase good food, and good flea killer, but not only because they would make a sale but because they believe it is the most healthful for the animals. Read Less

Read Less

I took my dog to Portland Animal Clinic for boarding. When I mentioned that I was worried about myt dog being lonely, the receptionist offered that they could walk my dog one or two times per day. When I came to pick him up the bill wa $72.00 more than anticipated. Apparently the receptionsit ""forgot"" to disclose the extra charge of $12.00 per day. Unforuntate when I came to pick him up there are a queue of 3 people and I had just returned from a memeorial service so i didn't wnt to get into a fight. We I aksed the receptionist , there wsa no apology ....just a shoulder shrug. When I mentioned to a friend that I had been overcharged, She immediately responded ""portland Animal Clinic?"" THey did something similar to her. My dog was extremely hungry, more than half of his food was still in the container when I picked him up after six days. After taking my cat to Woodstock Animal Clinic and receiving very poor care/customer service I found Portland Animal Clinic. Essentially these people are healers. My cat was given life saving treatment; the staff was caring and personable; and I received ample time and information about the medical needs required. I would highly recommend this vet center. This is a vet center you can trust. The staff extended themselves on a day before a holiday; extra costs were avoided which would have included Emergency Care/Hospitalization. This facility is clean, and staff all work well together. Excellent. Read Less

I have been bringing my two standard poodles here for grooming and boarding since they were puppies and have recieved nothing but exceptional service. The groomers rates are reasonable and she does a great job even when they are a total mess fresh from the beach! When I had to board the dogs last year to go out of town abruptly due to a family emergency they took them for two weeks with no reservation and I was actually suprised how reasonable the bill was even with the updated vaccine cost included. Excellent service overall and reasonable pricing. :) Read Less

Read Less
