Please consider taking your animals anywhere but VCA hospitals. I am appalled by their billing policies, misleading advertising, the illusion of triage that is presented, their total failure of ethics, and a complete lack of customer service. They are wholly deficient in even the most basic compassion for animals and their owners alike, and they have made a mockery of emergency animal care. I repeat, no one should take their animals here. I witnessed this not only on my own case, but in phone conversations the front desk staff had with other clients, some of which had recently lost their pet, or had an emergency situation on their hands that was worse than mine. First of all, quotes for procedures on my animal were given. I compared the price with one other hospital, and was shocked to find the costs that were close to $1000 were only $350 at another hospital. When confronted, the only explanation given was "yeah, we raise prices all the time." I have a dying animal in the back of your hospital, show even the most basic respect. No offer was given to even compete with the other clinic, just a curt offer to transfer our medical records there. I have spent thousands of dollars at this clinic for my animals, this was openly disrespectful, and not even good capitalism - most of the time, businesses want to keep their customers. To top it off, services that we did not authorize were added to the bill, going 25% over the estimate. The person at the front desk attempted to save the situation by discounting 10% off everything, but this did not really fix the price difference, and I saw it as an attempt to max out my care credit. On that note: There are a lot of graphics, signage, and other advertising elements at VCA hospitals advertising Care Club, and affordable payment plans for everyone, you know the verbiage well if you've been here. It's just Care Credit, like every single other vet has available - it's being rebranded, misleadingly, through these advertising elements, as some in-house payment plan system through VCA. Please stop this. There is no redemption for this sort of gross and flagrant misconduct, you have lost me as a customer, and you have mobilized me to spread the word far and wide to all animal owners that VCA animal hospitals are absolutely the worst place to take an animal for emergency care or any kind of care. All veterinarians and technicians who work here, take a good long look at yourself and the place you work - I have, and you need to stay far away from my animals. Read Less

We adopted a dog yesterday and wanted to have him seen by a vet. We called SE Portland Animal Hospital to make an appt. They said there was one person in their waiting room and that we should just come in. We went right over and were put in an exam room right away, then promptly forgotten about! After roughly 30-35 minutes I found someone and asked how much longer they thought it might be before we were seen. About an hour she tells me, because there are so many people ahead of us. I reminded her that the waiting room was almost empty when we arrived and that we had already been waiting 40 min. She went to check again and another person came back and told me they were swamped and that it would be about 2 more hours before we could be seen... REALLY??? You forget about me and then stick me at the bottom of the list? I'll just find a vet that knows how to operate their business properly. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for a vet. Came here was able to get in and out really fast and at a reasonable price. I'm not gonna say what it was for but those of you that decided to give this place a 1 star are stupid because cause have pay extra money for some for your animal means that they are taking care of them and plus you would know if you looked things up before you go cause it's right on their website and everything that they do is routine and that is your own fault for not looking first. VCA is awesome thanks for all you do!! P.s. my friends dog passed away this morning and just very glad that they were help to us very quickly. Thank you again guys Read Less

We had to somewhat unexpextedly put our dog down yesterday and the whole staff was kind, caring and compassionate. They went out of their way to do whatever was most comfortable for us and our Danner boy. We decided at the time of to do a cremation and have them spread his ashes at their location, however that night the more we thought about it the more we wanted him to be home for his final resting place. We called the next day and they were able to change the arrangements for us so we will be able to have his ashes at our home. Thank you so much VCA Animal Hospital. Read Less

Don't take them a stray to find out if it has a microchip. They will keep the dog without telling you they are going to do so. And conveniently they keep a non-working microchip scanner at the front counter so that they "have" to take the animal to the back to scan it. They are devious. Do not trust them. On the other hand, if you ever need to relinquish an animal take it to these guys, tell them it's a stray and they'll take the animal off your hands. No other questions asked. A better option than just dumping an animal. Read Less

My cat was completely misdiagnosed and suggested to go under surgery for wrong thing. After suspecting uterine infection, x-ray technique was not performed well where uterus was not visible at all,it was covered by her leg. Doctor was trying to locate uterus on x-ray by upper GI. Was told she is severely constipated with possible obstruction and needing ultrasound for $500 in addition to confirm and surgery. Did not offer or discuss enema, laxative, etc. Let her go with antibiotics that had 3 different directions verbally vs on visit summary vs on the prescription bottle. Next day was told that radiologist confirmed that she has bowel obstruction and needing surgery. Well at this time we were already at Hanna society has attempted to get radiology report but was told they don't have any record for my cat. Hanna society proceeded with repeated x-ray and found she has uterine infection which they kept her overnight for to monitor and get ready for surgery next morning. No confirmation of bowel obstruction. Have spent $548 for mistreatment, neglect. Doctor has never examined cat that had significant lump in pelvis. Very poor decision making on what kind of testing should be done, ignoring that x-ray was not done properly and made up diagnosis without repeating x-rays and pushing for an ultrasound. I will never trust this place to take care of any living thing. Also techs there full of attitude, judgement, no social skills, instead of dealing with acute urgent illness. Also, they do push guilt on you if you don't agree to all these services they want to charge you upfront and will not release animal until you pay all at once and if cat dies its on you. They did not offer to finance. And like a said earlier, ultrasound probably should of be done vs x-rays, or at least repeat x-rays to have any image of uterus. Read Less

I got a message saying my cat was brought to the hospital, when I called no one would really tell me what was going on. So I went over there and they told me a good sam brought her in because she was hit by a car. In the beginning they were friendly and sympathetic. But as soon as I told them that I need to figure out how to bring a couple of thousands of dollars on the table to safe my baby's life, I didn't get anymore information of what to do next. I offered that I could even do it on a payment plan and pay every paycheck, but instead I got told that they didn't feel comfortable giving me my little baby cat home over night because her condition was so severe, but because I wouldn't be able to pay it upfront they are forced to and if she dies it's on me. First of all I was already really upset as it was and I definetly did not want to take her home, knowing that she could not make it through the night without the medical attention she needed. So hearing them saying it's my fault was the worst feeling ever!! Long story short she made it through the night and we brought her to a different vet that told us that even with all the medical treatment, there is a very slim chance for her to survive and shed be suffering the whole time. I really loved my little baby, and to have a vet telling me it's my fault if she dies because I don't have the money to pay for her was the worst feeling ever. I don't think I will ever recover from this! Read Less

We set up an appt for the next day and the whole visit took less than an hour from checking in, getting his claw removed, and checking out. The staff were all very friendly and helpful even so much as to help get my dog back in the car since I had my toddler on my hip. We don't have a regular vet yet, but we'll likely be bringing our pets back here. Read Less

I highly recommend not going here. I never take the time to write reviews for an company but I wouldn’t feel right at least not warning people about this place. They do not care for you or your pets. My dog broke his leg at a dog park when he had a bad interaction with another dog. When they put a splint on him they wrapped it to tight to the point where it looked like his paw was going to burst. When I took him back to see why his paw looked like that they blamed me and made me pay to get it wrapped again. When I took him for a check up to see when we could get it removed and to see how his break was doing a Vet tech told me they might have to amputate his leg. At this point I was shocked. I was shocked because 1.) a vet tech was telling me this when an actual vet should have told me. 2.) the way she told me was like she didn’t care and she took a brief second to tell me and then just walked away. 3.)I was told his break should heal in 4 weeks 2 weeks had past and now they tell me my dog needs his leg removed. I choose to go to a different vet Mt Scott animal clinic on SE Eliis st where they treated us very well and the clinic is very affordable. We were told that there was no reason to amputate his leg that it would heal in about two weeks. Two weeks later my Aussie was back on his feet NO MORE SPLINT!!! I really appreciate the way Mt Scott animal clinic took care of my fur baby. Read Less

I'm writing this to raise awareness of the pain medication Rimadyl. I brought my 3-year old Chihuahua in here after finding him limping around our backyard. They checked his vitals and everything was fine. They prescribed him Rimadyl(Carprofen) for 6 days and the vet never disclosed any side effects of this drug. Within a few days I noticed my dog was lethargic, had little appetite, diarrhea and black spotting in his urine. He sounded congested at night and I immediately stopped giving him the medication. I planned to take him first thing coming back from work and I came back too late. My dog is now dead and I am still waiting to hear back from his autopsy. This is not the first case of this happening. After doing some research I found other reported deaths of dogs taking this medication. If I would've known I would have never given my dog this medication. I am now devastated and filled with guilt because I trusted in their vet blindly. Read Less

I spent thousands of dollars here getting my pets seen for various procedures over the years here with no complaints. Everything changed when I brought my 18 year old cat in to be euthanized and I handed his body over in a heirloom quilt my aunt had made for me who is now deceased herself. I did not want to hand my cats limp dead body over to the tech, so after the deed was done, I kept him wrapped in the quilt. I told her I would pick the quilt up when I returned for his ashes, and she assured me that this would be no problem. When I returned to pick up his ashes they said they could not find the quilt. They said it was probably somewhere in the clinic and I left my number so they could call me back when they found it. I waited nearly a month with no call. I called them several times and couldn't get a straight answer. I showed up in person and I was ushered into an office where one of the upper management crew basically just shrugged her shoulders and told she had no idea what happened to it. I was heartbroken. Not only did I lose my pet, but I also lost something very special made for me by my aunt who I loved. I have no idea if a staff member stole it, if it as cremated with my pet, or simply thrown out in the trash. I seriously doubt someone would throw a huge, beautiful, handmade quilt in the garbage. If there is anyone out there reading this who has the quilt in their possession, I would take it back no questions asked. (I WOULD EVEN GIVE YOU MONEY, IF THATS WHAT IT TAKES) It has my name and several personalized phrases sewn into it from my aunt. It is very large, big enough to cover a queen sized bed. It has a lot of yellow in it, and it has animals all over it. Please do the right thing and give it back. I have worked in several animal clinics and we ALWAYS returned blankets and collars and whatnot back to the owners after euthanasia. The fact that this wasn't investigated, and I was so nonchalantly blown off by staff after being a loyal customer for several years is infuriating. Read Less

My 3.5 year old dog died suddenly and expectantly while playing in the backyard. We think it was a blood clot. It happened within 60 seconds. It was awful. Very traumatic for us. I cried for weeks. He was my best friend. It happened at 7:30 at night, in our backyard, during the summer. We didn't know what to do with the body but we figured we had to do something with it. We brought it to this place so it could be cremated. The woman at the front desk was an idiot. She didn't know what she was doing, she lacked empathy, and made the situation so uncomfortable for us, all while the corpse of my beloved blue heeler sat lifeless in the bed of our truck. No one offered any type of support or assistance. I have since seen others get their dogs cremated and they receive a paw print made in clay or some other type of keepsake. Nothing was offered to us. We would have paid for something like that too but the staff were so incompetent. I wish I could take back those final moments. We didn't know if it'd be safe to let our dog's body stay in the backyard all night. I wish I didn't allow these people to be the last ones to handle and touch my best friend. I regret everything about it, but we were so distraught, so helpless. They were the ABSOLUTE WORST. Read Less

When they diagnosed my 10 y.o. cat with a UTI, I was quoted over $3,500 for treatment they said may or may not resolve the problem. When I told them such a high fee was unfeasible, the vet tech was really cold and snippy. She told me they could provide a cut-rate service (costing the bargain price of $1,400), but it wouldn't solve the problem and I would be back paying full price in a week. When presented with the options, I felt I had no choice but to end my baby's suffering. I got a modicum of kindness from the vet as I held my cat in my arms for the last time. But the rest of the experience was appalling. Plus, when I told a friend about the experience, she let me know about the great deal that she gets on the same treatment from her vet. I couple of hundred dollars. I am heartbroken I lost my cat for no reason, because I was told my options were limited. Conversely, when my dog was mauled by a neighbor dog right before the winter ice storm, they were the only facility in my area open, and they worked hard to get him fixed up for a reasonable price (couple hundred dollars), plus they honored the wellness plan I had with another VCA location due to weather constraints. These incidents were literally just weeks apart. I don't understand the difference, but such divergent experiences leave me with no choice but to treat VCA SEPAH as a last resort. Read Less

First, my experience.. and then address some of the negative comments. I'm caring for an abandoned cat that developed eye problems. After researching, I could see it was conjunctivitis. Bought terramycin, but couldn't administer without help. I went to VCA and asked how much it would cost to help put the medicine in the eyes. No charge! Their technicians (2 at a time) have been assisting me for a week. They've been very caring and helpful, and I couldn't have done this without them. The cat's eyes are better, but we'll try for 2 more days. As far as some of the negative comments, I don't see how anyone could expect a doctor or medical worker to care about every animal as the owner does. I don't know about you, but I would go crazy to have that much empathy for every sick/dying animal (that's why I couldn't work in medicine). I haven't seen reviews that say they are incompetent, and that is the main concern, isn't it? I'm sorry that people lose pets, I have lost many and it sucks.

Read Less

My dog broke his dew claw somehow, we called to see what we should do and the staff was very understanding and informative.

Read Less

They were a bright moment in an otherwise dreadful night. We had to euthanize our dog, we didn't want her to suffer. They told us to come right down. When we got there they took us immediately back to a comfortable room rather than make us wait in the waiting room, which was full. The Dr. saw us in less than 10 minutes. We talked about the process and that she concurred that it was the right course of action. Everything was smooth and the staff were pitch perfect.

Read Less

My dog was treated with care. Everything was explained to me. The costs were explained to me as things progressed or ahead of time. Customer service was top notch. People get emotional with pets and for good reason they are part of the family. And I can only imagine the things these vets and the people working there see. I think there are some other reviews on here that are a little irrational given emotional circumstances. I'd recommend this place and will be back if my dog needs immediate care again.

But this place is there to help, and we need that. Read Less
