It's been almost a full year since I lost my beloved Springer Spaniel Churchill to what I attribute to is a compounding effect of mis-steps and failures which transpired over the course of several weeks between Thanksgiving 2016 and January 2017. My dog was referred by my regular vet to VSCP for a bladder and colon prolapse repair surgery, and this was performed by Dr. Lauer, who permanently left the practice for a new job in Germany only three days after the procedure was completed. My dog required an extended hospitalization afterward, and Dr. Lauer had left notes but obviously was unavailable to do a followup or recheck on Churchill. The original estimate climbed by more than $2,500 to $7,500 during his stay. A pancreatic tissue sample sent in to the lab by Dr. Lauer for a biopsy took a week to get results, and the report forwarded to my regular veterinary clinic's internist sat for several more days afterward, necessitating a call to both VSCP and my regular vet for an update. Apparently, no one thought it was a high enough priority. Less than two weeks later after the original surgery, my dog had a reoccurrence of the colon prolapse which required yet another surgery, this time performed by Dr. Simpson right before Christmas. It appeared that the first surgeon, Dr. Lauer, never attached the colon to the surrounding internal structure while the bladder prolapse surgery was being performed, which would have been the ideal time to do this. When asked why this wasn't done, Dr. Simpson said she didn't know. This added another $2,500 on top of the original $7,500 and we are now at $10,000. After all this, the prolapse again showed signs of returning a few days after the second surgery, but no one at VSCP thought it was worrisome enough to pursue. Unfortunately, Dr. Simpson was on a vacation at this point and the followup was done by a third surgeon at the practice. Having endured the first highly invasive surgery, an extended hospitalization and recovery, and then another surgery, my dog was in considerable discomfort and distress. While Dr. Simpson and Tracy the office manager were kind enough to create an extended payment arrangement for me, I found no comfort with the lack of care my dog received and three weeks later he lost the fight to a low blood platelet count, from what my regular veterinarian determined to be was internal bleeding. It's been a very difficult year for me. I kept quiet about it and paid the bill as finances allowed, but I've had this on my mind for too long. All I can say is, that based on this prolonged sad and miserable experience, I will not be returning to VSCP for any future veterinary care. I learned a very valuable lesson to not allow panic and emotion to influence my decision making and create an easily exploited vulnerability, as I feel that I had been taken advantage of. It's really in your best interest to call around and seek other opinions and treatment options before you allow this to happen to you and your beloved pet. Read Less

We are just finishing up our Bouvier des Flandres' extensive treatment here for her soft tissue sarcoma - including complications that could/would have cost her life had not Dr. Simpson been so alert and knowledgeable. Her skills are SUPERB! And today our Mimi's life expectancy is the same as when we took her in. How much more could you ask? But there IS more . . . in Dr. Simpson we consistently sensed a deeply sincere understanding, compassion, and respect, for the part... animals play in their owners' hearts and lives. You can't "buy" that. Anywhere. And that same understanding and compassion was shared throughout the staff, from the back office vet techs to the infectiously cheerful Carly at the front desk. We drive into Portland from Yamhill County, and pass dozens of veterinary offices on the way. For surgical care, we will never go anywhere else. Ever. See More Read Less

Dr. Simpson - the only dr. we ever saw at this surgery-- apparently has done a good job on our dog's leg ( TLPO cranial cruciate repair). Otherwise, a somewhat disappointing experience. Very poor - almost non-existent preparation except for Dr. Simpson announcing that she's done thousands of these, often several a day. At $5000 per surgery, it's a money-printing operation, no joke. They take a cookie-cutter approach to the dogs - they show no signs of actually knowing their patients as individuals. The atmosphere in the office was giddy, annoying "cheer-leader" style, while info and instructions were absolutely minimum and mostly boilerplate -- sometimes confusedly written and/or inapplicable. Re-checks were a matter of 5 minutes max. - get 'em in, get 'em out. (We drove an hour, minimum, to get there, and another hour home.) We had no confidence that they knew our dog from any of the others. Our dog is very strong and high-energy, age about 8; the skimpy post-op (final re-check) advice did not acknowledge the issues this kind of personality brings. It's our problem to figure out a plan. Most upsetting: Before we actually did it, no one mentioned any of the horrible things that can and do go wrong with this op, including that a certain percentage of dogs who undergo this surgery develop cancer at the operation site. I found out about these issues too late, asked the dr about them and was told this is just Internet hearsay, not science. Not true. Reliable scientific studies exist. Educate yourself BEFORE you put yourself and your dog through this. Be aware of risk factors. And don't expect this outfit to be forthcoming. Finding out about this stuff after the fact made us feel as if we had been duped, and the cost of the surgery was salt in the proverbial wound. Altogether- so far - the op seems to have been good for our dog--time will tell-- but not a great experience for us humans. Read Less

Dr. Munjar took another set of x-rays and personally made sure that the best radiologist read them. He recommended against surgery in favor of PT. I appreciated his honesty and integrity to decline a surgical patient when he felt surgery wouldn't make a big difference in the outcome. I would recommend him to anyone who has an injured pet. I took my dog here after being referred by my vet. Without looking at the X-rays I had already had taken they told me they needed to take more, implying that they had seen the original shots, which they had not. I was then told that my dog had a torn CCL and they wanted to do a 4,000 dollar surgery to repair her leg. The TPLO that was recommended was not the right surgery and also was 1,000 dollars more than the vet down the street. I got a second opinion and was told it was the wrong diagnosis instead of a torn ligament her patella was slipping out of place, this turned out to be a much less invasive surgery and significantly cheaper. From the second I talked to the front desk it was all about how much money they could get out of me. Read Less

I was very pleased with the initial consult, he takes the time to answer any questions and gives you an honest opinion. After surgery, Dr. Munjar called me with an update. The staff took pictures of him recovering and texted them to us, it was so sweet! My dog recently went in to get his sutures removed , Dr. Munjar again took the time to talk with me and answer questions. I was shocked to read the two negative reviews as my experience with Dr. Simpson and her staff was just the opposite. We took our Boston Terrier to Dr. Simpson last Friday after a wonderful specialty vet, Dr. Robert Franklin, had arranged for Lucy's surgery with her. All we knew was that Lucy had cancer and her prognosis was unknown. We feared we'd lose her. Dr. Simpson took her the very next day and fit her into her schedule by performing the surgery during her lunch time. My husband had the unpleasant task of dropping Lucy off in the morning, but came home filled with praise for the wonderful and caring staff and Dr. Simpson. He said they were truly caring and dog loving people and he knew Lucy was in good hands. Dr. Simpson called us immediately after surgery with the good news that Lucy's tumor was operable and that she was ""cautiously optimistic"" that her prognosis was good. When we picked Lucy up to take her to Dr. Franklin's for post op care overnight, we could see how excited and genuinely happy she was that the surgery had gone so well. There was nothing fake about it. She gave us clear and concise instructions on Lucy's care and told us to call immediately if we had any concerns. A few days later, I did call with a question about a rash on Lucy's stomach which I left on her answering machine. She called me back within 10 minutes. I highly recommend Dr. Simpson and would not hesitate to take either Lucy or her sister back to her if the need arose. Read Less

Dr Simpson is approachable, caring, and a fabulous surgeon. My heart broke when my dog was diagnosed with bone cancer and I was faced with the decision to amputate her leg. When we first visited Dr Simpson I was aprehensive but she quickly showed me I was in good hands. She was kind and patient--I never felt rushed by her--and she took the time to answer all of my questions in clear terms. When she told me about K9 cancer and I got teary eyed she handed me the tissue box and said, "" I know, it is hard."" She let me process as we talked through all the options, never swaying me one way or the other, just giving me the financial and medical facts with a compassionate tone. I came to my own decision to amputate and we made an appointment for the next week. Dr Simpson encouraged me to call anytime with questions and to check in on my dog while she stayed the night at the hospital. And I did! The entire staff at Vetinary Surgical Center was warm and attentive. She also called me after surgery to see how we were doing. I saw her just yesterday to get Indi's sutures out. When it was time to take Indi to the exam room I asked if my boyfriend and I could come, too. Dr Simpson said, ""We can just do it right here."" She and the vet tech sat on the floor where Indi was lying comfortably so we could all be together. I trusted her with my dog's life and I would do it all over again. She is a smart surgeon with a gentle touch. I highly recommmed her to anyone who wants to the best medical care for their pet. Read Less

He was so patient and informative and he even went through everything with us again, because my husband had arrived late. I felt like we were in really great loving hands and were able to make the best decision for our dog.

Read Less

Recently had to take my dog to them due to an injury to her ankle. We were having a difficult time diagnosing the exact problem. Dr Munjar and his whole staff are great. Our German Shepherd needed two new hips and both elbows operated on a tarting at age 1. Dr Munjar walked us through what needed to be done and made sure we understood everything. Kodi was inactive for almost a year due to the amount of surgeries but today he runs the entire yard with his siblings. Before he hesitated getting up on the couch, sometimes even needing help. Now he just jumps right up! One thing that is not so great that Dr. Munjar did though was give him the ability to improperly greet people He now has to show off his hips and jump up to greet you. There are no words to describe what Dr. Simpson and the personnel at Veterinary Surgery Center of Portland did for our little Chester. My husband and I are so incredibly grateful for Dr. Simpson and the entire staff at VSCP! Braxton had TPLO surgery 2 weeks ago and today, we came in for his follow up. While I expected some trepidation on Braxton's part as he walked in, thinking he wouldn't understand why he was back, to my surprise he couldn't wait to get through the doors and love on the staff! And that he sure did, as they did with him too! Even today, getting his sutures out, he was all smiles and willing to go anywhere with the nurse. He'd still be flirting with her if it wasn't his nap time! I couldn't possibly have dreamed up a better facility to welcome Braxton into their family of fantastic Dr's, nurses and front office staff and care for him as if he was their own. Read Less

My very active GSD was diagnosed with partial CCL tears in both knees. Dr. Munjar was referred to me by another SAR dog handler whose working k9 had TPLO surgery by him. Apparently he is well known in the SAR community and has a stellar reputation. I could have gotten the surgery done by someone else for less money, but I wanted the best surgeon for my buddy. I am very impressed with him and how he gave us his personal cell number for after-hour emergencies. He has replied to every email and made sure my questions were answered. I definitly recommend him to anyone who is looking for TPLO surgery. Read Less

Read Less
