Took my beloved 12 year old retriever to Dr. Horton because of her rapidly declining health. We thought the end was near and were heart broken. The vet said "we aren't done here, she's not done, lets see what a blood test will show us", but she didn't examine my dog. She sent us home with pain meds (receptionist didn't know how to administer) and said she'd call. Later that day we got the call that went exactly like this: she needs iron, we can fix that... low white count, we can fix that . . .low electrolytes, we can fix that . . .good liver and kidneys . . .high calcium, that could be cancer of the anal glands. Who leads with hope and ends with cancer? The vet said to wait a day, see how she does and check back in to see what we do next. I called early on the check in day and left the message that she was vomiting and wouldn't eat. Three hours later I still had not heard from Dr. Horton, so I called back. I had to retell the morning message. She put me on hold to talk to the vet who was in surgery.Dr. Horton's response through her receptionist: "Sorry I didn't call, but there is nothing else we can do for her. You'll have to call another vet/specialist." When I asked about what we were going to do to end her suffering I was told we could drop her off and the doctor would do it at the end of the day, but we couldn't be there. If we wanted to be with her, we would have to wait 4 days for an appointment. Or we could go to another vet.Dr. Horton's indifference reflected her lack of both compassion and professionalism. We will not trust her with our other pets, but will take her advise to "go to a another vet". BTW The next vet said she saw no indication of anal gland cancer, but the blood work and my dog's failing health were indicative of some kind of cancer. She actually examined my dog and she wasn't a specialist. She gave me the assurance I'd been seeking . . . it was time for our loving companion to be relieved of her pain and suffering. Read Less

I was initially offput by the decor which seemed more like a constant sales pitch than a welcoming environment. The front desk staff was very patronizing so I was feeling very hesitant about staying to see the doctor. In their   defense the doctor was very kind and had an accurate assessment of my cats eye infection. I administered the antibiotics and his eye improved but we had a follow up appointment which was very important because he needed to follow through on a few more antibiotics. I called to confirm the appointment time on the day of the appointment and they told me I had no appointment! So this leaves me at 2pm on a Saturday scrambling for a veterinary appointment. I'm very disappointed and upset. Luckily another local vet was able to accommodate me for an emergency Sunday appointment. Nothing but positive things to say about the folks at this clinic! Not only do they treat all the animals in my and my parents' families, but they do a great job as well. While I can appreciate that sometimes mistakes happen and things are mislabeled, I would not under any circumstances call anyone who works here a 'moron', as the displeased customer below me has. The folks here even took the time to collect urine from my dog when he was showing signs of a UTI and I couldn't personally seem to collect it! They've done nothing but good by me and mine, and I certainly recommend them to anyone I know in the area. Read Less

I have been a satisfied customer and have recommended Dr. Horton and St Helens Vet clinic to my family and friends. We have been customers since 2008. I have only lived here since 2008. Dr. Horton has 3 very loving, compassionate vet techs in her office that have been there for the last couple of years. My animals willing allow these people to to take them out of my arms. Adopt a dog from shelter. She has a insecurity problem and nervures around stranger and other dogs. We needed help get her nails trim. Go in for office visit. We sat and wait for 20 minutes in the same room as one other dog and 4 people. My dog lay down quietly and wait. The vet walked out in the counter area (about 15 feet away from us. My dog freaked out and barked and lunged at her. (still we were 15 feet away). Once I realized what she was barking at, I pulled her back told her to sit. She stopped barking and sat back down. I asked the Vet if she'd like me to put muzzle on my dog so she'll be more comfortable or she can gave her a treat so my dog can calm down. The vet said no she would not see my dog because she doesn't take "" Dangerous Dog that tried to attack her"". I tried to explain to her that my dog really reactive to strangers that just pop up out of now where. If you gave her treat let her approach you, she'll be fine. Again, I offered that I can put muzzle on for her if that make her feel comfortable. She insisted that we go somewhere else or have other vet take care of my dog at home. The worst part about this is, never expect such a prejudgment from the Vet. I respect her decision to do only what she feel comfortable doing. But at least, show some sympathy or effort before reject to help us. No wonder millions of shelter dogs got put down every year. Even when there?re nice people out there who adopted them and willing to deal with all their issues, there're still vet like this who will not give a helping hands. So unexpected to see this coming from profession that suppose to love animal. Read Less

I have been going here since I think 2004. I actually moved from St. Helens to Beaverton in 2007 and I still drive my pets back to be seen by Dr. Horton. She's always very sweet with my animals I have taken there and has always taken good care of them. It's obvious Dr. Horton cares about her clients. I have never felt overcharged and the front desk staff have always been nice as well. Read Less

Doc Horton is just the best vet period! Don't even think twice about having her care for the health of your fur babies. Our family will always be humbled by the extreme care she gave our pup and her sensibility when it came to tough choices we had to make. Doc Horton will always be our vet and we refer her to everyone. This will be the best decision you make regarding pet care. Now we live 45 minutes away but the Doc's care is worth three times the drive. Read Less

Read Less

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE!!!! They refused to test my puppy for parvo after her playmate tested positive and put in quarantine.. They gave her shots (which not supposed to do when dog is sick) which kicked her illness into high gear. They mislabeled her pills, which made her sicker! And they refused to treat her for her illness. Now my puppy is in intensive care at Midway because of these morons.. Opening a law-suit against them for mal-practice and abuse. Read Less

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE!!!! after our roommate's puppy tested positive and put in quarantine for parvo, they refused to test my puppy. Both pups were constantly around eachother, logic demands one is positive, test tne other for safety. The staff are hair-brained idiots who have no training.. Their 'vet' is no vet... Lazy, untrained, money hungry fuckers who don't car one ounce about the pets at all. Can not say enough good things about this vet! It's obvious they really care about the animals and were so fantastic when we brought our dog in to get a growth removed. I have 3 small dogs and a cat. Every time I have ever needed any care for my animals I have been more than pleased with the love and service my creature family and I get at St. Helens Vet Clinic. I do remember the person Nancy S mentioned and I know she left the clinic right around the same time as that review was dated. Her personality was abrasive. I have a grumpy wiener dog who is picky about who touches him. My confidence and trust is in the excellence, of the care my pets get here. St Helens Vet Clinic is exemplary. Read Less

Dr Horton is the best.  Had tried other local vets with no real "bedside" manner, Dr Horton really loves her patients and their owners too!

I used to live in St. Helens and took my dogs and cats to Dr. Horton. After moving to Portland I tried several vets, but ended up coming back to St. Helens Veterinary Clinic. I trust Dr. Horton. Unlike a lot of the Portland vets, I know when Dr. Horton recommends a procedure it is because it is in the best interest of my animals. Dr. Horton has a lot of empathy for my pets and she has been right on target in her diagnosis and treatments. Read Less

A friend of mine recommended Dr. Horton since I was new to the area. This by far is the best vet I have been to. She is very caring and loving towards my animals. They love her! All the vets I have been to in the past has never been so caring for a animal. My dog refused to go to the vet until I started taking her here. Its a low stress place and that's why I like it. Not a lot of people running around going crazy. The prices are very reasonable. I would highly recommend this doctor.Read Less

I just wanted to say thank you so very much to Pet MD. Marilyn Horton. I mentioned that I was a full time student and this couldn?t of been a worse time financially for this to happen and she treated Drako at absolutely no cost. She was even so kind as to throw in special high nutrient kitten food to help the healing process along. Please please please, if you ever have veterinary needs go see Marilyn Horton at St. Helens Veterinary Clinic (503-397-4190). She actually empathizes with people on a individualistic and human level. Seriously, I simply haven?t found that quality trait in many places throughout my life. Great woman who cares and knows here stuff, what more could you ask for? Read Less

Read Less
