Had to take my 6 month old husky/German Shepard puppy in last night after she got her hind leg stuck in the running board of our Jeep all the way up to her hip. She was screaming in pain and after we got her out she could not put weight on it. We did wait for about an hour to be seen, however my puppy was resting comfortably and was not in any significant distress. There were others that were there before us, as well as a few that came in that obviously had appointments. I read some of the reviews of this place while we waited to be seen. It seems the 2 biggest complaints were wait times and costs as well as having to pay up front. The wait time did not seem unreasonable to me as My dog was clearly not going to die from her leg Injury and she was resting comfortably on the floor wagging her tail at people who passed her. They were also dealing with a shift change right around the time we came (Around 8pm). The staff and the Vet were very apologetic for the delay and once we were in a room, they quickly attended to her and explained our options. He explained that an X-ray would be the best way to rule out a break or dislocation, but based on his exam, he was fairly certain it was a soft tissue injury. He also laid out how much it would cost approximately. We opted to take her home with pain meds and if she did not start to bear weight come back for an X-ray. I felt like their professionalism and standard of care were excellent. The cost of the visit was actually very reasonable and had she needed more care, I would understand that in order to be treated I would need to pay upfront. I have had many pets and emergency care services have always been a bit more expensive than regular veterinary services and I have always had to pay upfront. That’s just part of the cost of having pets that you love and care for. Hopefully I won’t be needing their services again anytime soon. But If I do, I will definitely return here. Read Less

I bought their insurance, but I can't cancel it because I've used services for couple things and they say to cancel I owe them $500 to pay for the services! My dog had her teeth cleaned in the flu shot. Anytime I make an appointment it's a week out, and it's during rush hour traffic. I tried to get pain medication for my dog, I ended up talking to 4 different receptionist. They kept switching me from receptionist to receptionist because they were having meetings, and I still didn't get my pain medication. 8 hours later a veterinarian had called me to see what it was I wanted, she had no clue. Yes I was upset. I just wanted medication called to Walmart, cuz it was cheaper than getting it from them, I guess they didn't like that! We couldn’t be more satisfied with VCA in Salem, OR. On New Year’s Day, we had to put down our almost 17 year old Yorkie. One of the most difficult decissions we’ve had to make. They treated our dog with so much dignity and compassion. They also understood our crushing pain. They were patient, waiting for us to be ready for our last goodbye. They let me hold him till his heart was no longer beating. Their compassionate care helped ease our pain. A couple of weeks later we received a sweet Sympathy card signed by all the staff. Now that’s what I call a caring and safe place to take your furry family member for all their needs, they will take care of both of you! B & B B Read Less

Let me start off with... Great doctors, receptionist and crew! Good people! Now that's out of the way, be prepared for sneaky corporate bull shi* pricing. Like exam charges on rechecks, we've had this happen to the tune of $40+. The receptionist gave me a discount without me asking for one after explaining the bill. I had not complained but was visibly unhappy. I feel sorry for the people up front who have to deal with these things, greed from the top is felt more at the bottom. Update - 12-3-2016, when I went in and paid the recheck ticket, before all that happened I had asked for a quote during the visit. The receptionist and doctor both dismissed my request by saying we'll email one (which was fine at the time). Still have not seen an email (not that I'd take my pet back). READ MORE REVIEWS!! Plenty of 1 and 2 Star Reviews that will make you question where you're taking your pet. The reply to all this, was them asking me to reach out to them in an email... Happy Holidays everyone! This was one of my older FB posts, but I didn't share it at the time. I just want to say that the people at VCA animal hospital in Salem made my day. They sent us a package. Inside was a card signed by all of the employees with a personal blurb from the vet offering their condolences for Luna. Along with the card came a clay disk with her two front paw prints in it and her name engraved. They didn't have to do any of this. We were very impressed with the kindness and compassion the vet had when we actually put her down. Even though it was a very hard thing to do, the vet there made it a little easier. Went in as an emergency with a very sick little 1 year old dog. We were seen immediately. There were options for treatment that would fit within our budget. We have gone to the same vet for over 30 years and felt confident when they recommended this after-hours office. We also called around on our own, comparing prices. VCA was in fact, the least expensive of the after-hours establishments. We were very happy with all of the staff, and especially the vet's assistant and vet himself. His knowleable approach to treatment gave us confidence that our little boy was being treated well. In fact, a day later, our boy is doing much better! We are so grateful and impressed that we are considering changing from our much-loved veterinary clinic of 30+ years! Read Less

Thank you everyone for helping my Beagle, Baxter, and his miracle recovery from his overdose. You were all very supportive and understanding of the difficult decisions we were facing as a family. Though at times it was difficult for you to explain our options and his minimal chance of recovery I'm sure your hard work, supportive care and of course the Lord above all were responsible for the miracle we saw this morning. Most of the staff and Vets are friendly. My only complaint is one lady who works there. Not sure if she is just a receptionist or a vet assistant, but she has no compassion what so ever. Not sure of her name either, but she is a heavy older lady who never smiles and seems to always have her light hair pulled back. I have had to deal with her on two different occasions. The first one was when my Puppy was hit by a car and had to have surgery. I was sobbing, not knowing if my Puppy would survive and the lady was able to choose my co pay (I was paying the rest the next day, puppy was staying overnight). It was a very spendy bill, which she chose to give me a co pay that was 200 dollars less than the total amount. She made me pay for a surgery that had not even been performed yet as a co pay. No compassion or empathy asking if maybe I needed to go to a bank, or if I needed to ask for a loan, maybe take a moment to figure out what I was going to do. She acted as if I were such a burden to her. THANKFULLY I had the money, and was able to pay what she wanted me to. But I still wish I would have talked to someone higher up about it. She was very rude and unprofessional. The second time was when my friends Puppy went into labor and was having some difficulties. They would not help my friends dog because she did not have the money. I was willing to cover her bill, but because she did not have the money up front and they wouldn't wait until I got there, they pretty much just let my friends puppies die from complications. This same lady was the one who was "helping" my friend. I was so upset when I finally got to the hospital. In fact when I did get there I had to press a button in order for them to buzz me in and unlock the door for me to enter. This same lady was the only one at the front desk, and I stood there as she did nothing about it for a good two minuets or so. I ended up having to knock loudly on the door and she still did nothing! She completely ignored me. I was so shocked! I felt this was the worst experience I have ever had at a vet. Even with all of the positive staff and vets, this one individual ruined everything about this Hospital and I will never go back. If one staff is capable of making a patient feel this way, she should not be working there. I feel staff should be friendly, understanding, nice, friendly and compassionate as well as empathetic. I will never refer anyone to this Hospital. Ever. VCA, please make sure your staff is professional! Read Less

One of my first experiences with this VCA was when my oldest Jack Russell Terrier was misdiagnosed with arthritis after I brought her to this VCA suffering from what I know now was an exposure to a toxin (most likely berries or xylitol picked up in discarded gum in a local park). The vet prescribed my dog Rimadyl, which is known as having serious toxic side effects with some dogs - notably terriers, like my JRT. After one dose, the dog began to vomit, could not eat or drink and had to be hospitalized for a week on intravenous fluids and medication and I was advised that she was not expected to survive. That was the beginning of my dog's lifelong liver damage which required a biopsy and monthly drugs to remedy. I also had to locate a suitable diet for her - and this clinic was not at all helpful with any of that. This clinic is much more interested in its financial viability than in its clients - including, I'm sorry to say, the animals it treats. There are other great vets in the area, so it isn't necessary to use this clinic. Don't do it. Read Less

Took my cat there to be boarded while I was out of town for a week. Came back to her having fleas. I've had her 8 years and she's never had fleas. She's an indoor cat and an only pet. I took her there flea free and healthy, but now she has fleas and all these bald spots where she's been pulling our her fur. I discovered she had fleas the next morning (i picked her up late in the evening and went right to bed as I had just flown in and was exhausted) and called them right away. After a run around and me getting upset they refunded my money and gave me one of the 24-hour flea killer pills. When the manager came in several hours later she called and after some negotiation gave me one treatment of frontline. She assured me that would take care of the problem. Fast forward 4 weeks and while petting my cat tonight I saw another flea. Called VCA and the receptionist said that it takes 3-4 treatments to get rid of fleas. I asked for additional treatment and she said I could pay for the treatments, but that they weren't going to comp me any more product. I wouldn't be needing to buy any of these things (carpet spray, frontline, flea shampoo) or having to take all my clean bedding and laundry that I just washed a few days ago back to the laundromat had they not been negligent. And the manager had assured me one treatment would be all I would need. So, why would the manager insist all I'd need was one treatment when the receptionist says it takes 3-4? I'm wondering if the manager didn't want to eat the cost of taking care of the problem and misled me. Part of what upsets me is their assertion that their facility is flea free. When a pet is dropped of there is a whole speech about the pet being checked for fleas and that there will be an additional charge if the pet is found to have fleas because they pride themselves in being a flea free facility. Well, my cat came home with fleas and the one treatment they gave me didn't take care of the problem. So, the facility isn't as flea free as they'd like you to believe. They either don't check ALL pets for fleas when they arrive or they don't keep pets with fleas in a separate area from pets without fleas. Whichever it is, my cat has fleas and they're not helping me take care of the problem they caused. They're more than willing to take $80 from me for the flea treatments, but I wouldn't have to get the flea treatments had they taken better care of my pet. Read Less

Thank you everyone at VCA animal hospital for giving us something we can have forever in her memory. Read Less

Once we got him home, he was himself and acted as if nothing had happened. Our other pets were excited to see and if they could, they would be thanking you also. Read Less

Read Less

The people there really make it seem like you are going to family for help when you're animal is in need. My kitty got really sick and I was really emotional. They gave me time to be alone and clear out before we talked details.
