I am so glad that we found Barlow Trail and Dr. Thompson! All the staff are very competent and kind, and I feel like they genuinely know and care about my family's animals. We have both pets and livestock and Barlow Trail is great with both. The clinic makes me feel like we are a team in treating my animals, sharing knowledge and coming up with treatment plans, somethign not all veterinary clinics seem to do today. We originally took our dog to Barlow Trail because of the arthritis in her hips and spine. Our first visit was free and they treated Tasha with special care and love. We were there for about 3 hrs and were with the vet or techs the whole time. They did blood work on Tasha and then took the time to explain to us what they found out. We left with 2 prescriptions one for her arthritis and one for pain. A couple days later they called to see how she was doing. I have a new German shepherd puppy, and we have been taking him here. Dr. Houston was very gentle and kind with him. It is clear that she truly cares about the animals she sees! My pup was so comfortable he fell asleep on the exam table! We had him microchipped here as well and the staff was very good at distracting him with treats; he didn't want to leave! My boyfriend recently took three of our cats here too for an unknown mouth infection/illness. Each of the cats had gotten very sick very suddenly. Dr. Houston is very kind and empathetic. The staff are all friendly as ever. The place can get busy and I will say they seem to always run a little late BUT you have to expect that when they get so many emergencies. Their prices are reasonable. I am learning that young/healthy adult dogs seem to cost nothing but as soon as they take that turn to becoming a senior they require a little more care. Dr. Houston diagnosed my dogs heart condition and ran lots of tests so she could properly serve/manage my dogs disease while prolonging her life! No, this was not cheap and yes I was a bit shell shocked at first BUT like I said my dog didn't hardly cost anything in medical expenses for 10 years and of course I want to make sure she's comfortable now that she's an old lady. I have read that people have gone elsewhere for service to find better pricing and I admit I shopped around myself but Barlow has the most reasonable prices I could find near me without going into the city and still getting that small country vet feel. Also they accept care credit and have an easy to set up payment plan. Be sure to check out their online pharmacy that saves you money and delivers to your house so make sure to ask about that at your next appointment. Super easy to set up (better yet, they even will help set it up for you!) And they have automatic shipment. I came home today and Dr Houston called and talked to me about my dog and her lab work. I know for a fact their office closed at 4 and yet she called after hours to talk with me and to set up my online prescription.. That is called costumer service and caring about your clients. Once again terrible experience with Barlow Trail. Even though we are current at another vet and have records to prove it, they apparently don't want to make any money off of us. Will not do a simple gland expression and nail trim without an exam there, nor will they sell us prescription dog food without an exam there. Even though we have a written prescription. Apparently if they can't make a lot of money off of you they don't want any. That's fine.... I WILL NEVER EVER TRY THEM AGAIN! Dr. Houston and her staff are great, very friendly and easy to talk to. My dog had surgery last week and I was concerned about how his back area would look after the surgery since the tumor had turned his skin a dark color, Dr. Houston did an awesome job with removing his tumor and was able to remove the dark spot with her great stitching. I love this vet clinic. They're close to us and the staff is amazing. All of their veterinarians are so knowledgeable and kind, same with the techs and the front office staff. They're currently taking wonderful care of my Saint Bernard who developed a nasty abscess under his chin. Less than $300 for visit, shaving, attempting to drain, antibiotics, pain meds and flea treatments for all of my dogs. Also just took our new Irish Wolfhound puppy in yesterday for his first visit.I have 3 Saint Bernards and 2 Irish Wolfhounds, and wouldn't take them anywhere else. The exam fee is a little high IMO at $60, but the superior care and attention they give my babies is worth it. Read Less

Dr. Thompson was great! I took my 2 boxers Twyla and Jagger to see her more than once. She has a very calm energy which was very helpful for the pups and ME!! I took my boxer in when she started having symptoms of food allergy and also grew a tumor on her ear. She gave me all of my options and I never felt pushed to do anything. I went to Barlow Trail to purchase a replacement bag of Royal Canin Urinary SO Feline cat food for my ailing sister's 2 cats & had a hostile encounter with the service desk in the attempt to purchase the cat food.  Left feeling humiliated with the smallest possible bag, that the clinic was somehow bending the rules to accommodate the purchase, that the cats hadn't been seen in the last year and an exam of both cats were necessary before another bag of this expensive cat food ($38.89 for 6.6# bag or $5.89/#).  Now, if... if each exam were $40.00 each for each healthy cat, then Barlow Trail would sell the next bag for essentially $118.89 or $18.01/#.  Barlow Trail seems to think the public aren't aware of this sales tactic, or aware there are other veterinary clinics one can bring their pets to.The long & short of this is Barlow Trail lost 2 4-legged patients, and any future sales of their very expensive cat food to my sister.I write this review to alert other customers of this sales tactic.  Very under-impressed and extremely pissed off at the unnecessary humility endured by the service desk.One stars only to be able to post this review. My experience with two other clinics since moving here a little more than a year ago, was horrendous and deadly and I'm now extremely cautious with any vets I work with.  Dr. Houston called me with the results of my pet's blood work - at night - which I appreciated and they're taking my request of having one doctor oversee the health of my current pet seriously which I believe to be critical for providing the best care.  I mean, that's what people do, right?  This way one person builds a knowledge base of the history for the pet which may prove to be vital - avoiding a missed diagnosis and/or misdiagnosing.  If not, than each doctor basically just reads the report written by the last attending doctor which can prove fatal.  Barlow seems to appreciate my concerns and willing to work with me as best they can.  It doesn't get better than that as far as I'm concerned, so, thank you Barlow.  I'm recommending your clinic every chance I get. Went here a week ago with my old dog( she had a stroke in the night) to have her euthanized. I've been very short on funds,so I called them after calling other veterinarians in the area- they gave me a quote of $156, which was less than the others. After they finished, I was given a bill of over$100 more than the quote I was given. I was grieving so didn't question it when I left. Later I called and they said basically tough shit. I love Dr Dabritz and the staff. Our rat developed a sudden head-tilt which turned out to be a severe ear infection. The reception staff were able to get us an appointment right away. Dr Dabritz was thoughtful, careful, and very gentle with our poor boy -- even though he was in pain, he still snuggled up under her hand. She got us set up with meds, and when we called back a few days later because Remy was getting worse, they got us an appointment within 20 minutes. The doc really took her time checking him over and discussing options with us. We switched him to new antibiotics and now he's doing so much better. The staff were also really sweet - a couple stopped into the room just because they wanted to meet Remy. We had to wait a little extra on one appointment because they had some emergencies, but that's life in the vet world. Try to make extra time if you can. We'll definitely be back. My husband and I were in from out of town when our pug Lexi became very ill. We took her in on a Sunday (thank goodness they were open!) And a plan of action for her was set after some tests were run. After a day and a half of rehydration and meds she was a completely new dog. I had to take in my baby boy navy that I a small 7lbs Pom. This is the second time that he has been bite by the same bit bull! Dr.Galloway and the staff are so amazing and easy to work with. My new dog o adopted has really bad separation axienty. I call and made a appointment and saw the vet. They gave me something that didn't help. She has destroyed 4 kennels while at home when we are gone. Called the vet again and said they would call back the next day. We've been pet-patients since Dr Housten took over our 25+ years w Dr. Wainwright who retired - Village Vet Damascus. We're delighted & pleased with Dr Houstens obvious caring & compassion & knowledge. Recently, one of our older cats, Tilly developed serious illness, fiinally diagnosed late stage lung cancer and we had to say goodbye. Dr Housten assured us that was time to say goodbye. Tilly spent 12 years on Larry's lap while he engineered every 911 & ER radio system in the PacNW. Motorola's mascot! She purred / slept, helping Larry keep calm & focused. Tilly's responsible for helping everyone keep safe= able to call 911- Larrys a cancer survivor so loosing Tilly to cancer seriously hit home. So, it was a very sad day for us having to say goodbye. Barlow Trail/Dr Housten deserves a full 5 star review! The staff have always been very kind, friendly/ caring except for the one thing we've already discussed w Dr Housten. We understand why as a few bad people has forced this, but would like to see a changes about their policy of prepaying for euthanasia. (that part gets a negative 5 star) The rules need to bend for those long term patients & have the means to pay. We'll be facing this again, may be soon. Tillys sibling, Bitty-Boo is seriously ill w bacterial infection & isn't improving w meds. I wish they had after hours on-call...having to take Bitty-Boo elswhere or be seen by ER clinic isn't good as they don't know him or whats happening= you never know who you'll get to see then. I read Sara J's review and how she felt the girls were whispering, behind backs because they're lesbians... if this happened, I would be very shocked. I don't want to minimize or be dismissive about what you wrote as I wasn't there. I do understand that sometimes those who are LBGT/trans, suffer low self esteem, worry/ believe others are making ugly remarks or passing judgement of them. and YES, people get ugly, believe they have the right to pass judgement BUT, From what I've learned, from my numerous NUMEROUS visits to both Dr Houstens clinics, her staff have ALWAYS been 99.9999% respectful, caring, kind and helpful to everyone. I've spent hours sitting in their front waiting area. NEVER ever witnessed any of the staff acting ugly towards anyone! Perhaps they were whispering about something totally different, had nothing to do with you or your being lesbian. Dr Housten is a very caring, kind hearted soul. Have you met her? I think if you had, you'd feel very different than what you believe happened. I don't think she would approve of any of her staff making ugly judgmental/criticism remarks, whispering or statements about or towards any of her pet parent-patients! I'm sorry that people do pass judgement on those who are "different" than what they believe to be normal...but I've not seen any of this at Barlow Trail office or Village Vet and we've been going there since 1989! We have 5 cats (2 are very old) one has dementia and 2 older dogs and so we need good veterinary care that is close by. I hope you will return there and maybe talk to Dr Housten personally about what happened and how you felt then. From what I've witness they all really do care! Difficult front desk people. The vet was amazing. We're a lesbian couple & the homophobia is here. We foster animals that need special attention including rabbits & we heard the remarks the front desk negative girls whispering about how gay it is. Whatever it is that they were whispering they were actively talking about our case anyways. We went in on a instinctual 911 visit & don't have $ & they will take the payment later so they got one solid star for that one because they made everything entirely difficult. The lady with the dermal piercing is unreadable with a angry yet disgusted face on every time I see her. This was the second time going in & I'm going to finish my animals treatment & move on. I have 2 dogs & 2 cats. I am looking for a great exp & a home town feel near me to take all of them too & we need quality care to be apparent even at the front desk where veterinary assistance sit. Called around and got quotes for an exam on a litter of Lab puppies. Barlow Trail was by FAR the most affordable. Other offices quoted me a charge per puppy. On a litter of 6, it was going to cost around 200 elsewhere. Barlow Trail offers an $85 dollar litter exam! Everyone was very friendly. Had a great experience. I will be back! Read Less

Bartlow trail did an amputation on my dogs tail because of an infection. They proceeded to charge me for the wrong size and type of cone and he repeatedly was able to remove the bacndage. They kept charging me 31$ even after the 1300 dollar bill to remove the tail. Dogs get there tails cropped all the time, and it is nowhere near 1300. I was worried about my dog so I paid for it. To be nickel and domed twice a week for 31 dollars only to have him continuously be able to remove the bandage is a major insult. In a medical setting when one pays for a surgery(from my human experience) after care and follow up are included. When you get stitches they do not charge to remove them This place is not concerned about your animals well being only the money. Avoid this place like the plague. Brambles deserved better. I called a day in advance to make an appointment,,, I asked if there was a price they could give me as a high and a low for the type of issue my dog needed resolved ,,,, at that time the high end was 200 higher then a different vet in town,,,, I thought well I have been going there and had no issues, ,, I brought my dog in for the exam and all of a sudden the cost of the procedure was twice the amount  of the high end they quoted me over the phone,,,, I could not belive it,,,, I have brought my two dogs there for over 5 years I will never set foot in there again and will do my best to voice my opinion about that,,,,, they are all about the money and truly rude,,,, the doctor had no problem with the fact the reception lady gave out the total wrong number and it's just how it is,,,, yeah that's after I spent $52 on my exam that I would have never been there for if i was informed correctly over the phone,,, Read Less

I have tried many times to like this clinic since Dr Christensen sold the business. I give up.  I cannot recommend this clinic to any animal lover.  Slow slow service. I even came one morning when my animal was sick and was turned away with "we only have one doctor today and her schedule is full."  Really?   Dr Christensen would always make room in an emergency and all other clients understood, having been in my shoes too.   I was not offered another doctor or clinic recommendation; just had to leave with my sick dog and make my decisions in a time of crisis.  I have been coming here for more than 10 years. The staff "pretend" to care, but it truly is all about the money.  Every time I come the front desk staff have changed out again, leaving me to believe even the staff cannot stand to work there.  The staff is so apologetic, but that is only because they have to make so many excuses.  I had an appointment, was called and asked to come earlier only to wait 25 minutes past the appointed time.  Again, good at apologies.  Cannot in all sincerity recommend this clinic for any animal nor any animal lover.  The problems I have experienced are endless and only ask that you trust me and go somewhere else. I took a pug puppy in to have a minor hernia checked with my perspective buyers. I was explaining to them that I have had a few of these before and that it probably wouldn't need to be repaired but if it did they would do it when they spayed at a minimal cost. The vet tech came into the room and rudely interupted me to tell them that it would have to be repaired and that i was breeding defects and that i have no business breeding at all. She shows labs and breeds them so shes an expert according to her. She also said my puppy had fleas which was a lie. I went home and washed her. Guess what not one flea. When the vet came in she told us the very same thing i had said that it probably would close on its own that more then likely it was a delayed closure but according to the vet tech there is no such thing. She told them ALL hernias are genetic defects and that i dont know what im doing. Im deeply disturbed by this. How can someone disparange another person like this without at least looking at the parents or my breeding books or talking to my vet? I do know I would never recommend them to anyone. Even though the puppies health checked out and the buyers were ok with the condition of her hernia her rudeness and her so called expertise decided the people againest buying the puppy cause of what the vet tech had to say. We love Dr. Houston and her staff! It's taken them a couple of months to find the right dosage for our blind,diabetic dog, Dante, but after changing his insulin type, he's finally almost normal. I could hear the cheers coming from the staff in the tech room when they saw his results! He has loved his weekly Saturday visits to see them, everyone is so kind to him and guide him around so he doesn't run into anything...., so we might have to pop in every few weeks or so to say "hi"! We also have an older Border Collie, Jack, who in the last months of his life and Dr. Houston has done wonderful things to make him comfortable until he tells us when it's his time. Jack was the first of our 4 dogs that we brought to the clinic and Dr. Houston came in the examination room and immediately sat down on the floor next to him. We were fans right away! I am VERY shocked by some of the comments on here..i have taken all of my dogs to Dr. Christensen since 1999, I moved to Vancouver in 2001 and continued to take my dogs to him. this place is the most caring vet clinic i have been to.. each and every time i would bring either of my dogs in, within a few days Dr. C would ALWAYS call me and if i didn't answer, he would leave a message to check in to see how my 4 legged kid was doing... Even if i called to ask a question, Dr. C would always call me back and give me whatever advise i was needing.. my precious 4 legged kids had the best lives they could possibly get and Barlow was a part of their lives and i know that Doctor Christensen loved my dogs up until the last day. As far as their staff goes, Courtney has been there forever and she along with Julie were always so sweet and nice on the phone and whenever i brought my dogs in, they were right there petting them and giving them love, same with Doc C. My bestest  4 leggedfriend just passed away Dec 2012, and after 13 years, i miss him tons and it's so weird not to have him here, but i know that every time we came in, he wagged his tail and loved to see everyone weather he was having shots, or getting blood drawn or having surgery... this place DOES care about animals and i cannot say enough about the care and experience that i have had with Dr. Christensen...they are all so great! Avoid if you can! The ONE time we went here was for an emergency & will never be back. The older male vet (unsure of his name spelling-dr. Christensen?, I was too upset at the time to remember the spelling) was really rough with our sick cat and was just rude in general. I was so apalled at his behavior and demeanor and so upset about my cat of 14 years- it was so horrible. Our cat was not agressive at all-he could barely keep his head up-and the dr. scruffed him and treated him so poorly that I was horrified. If it wasn't an emergency-he was throwing up and needed sub-cu fluids-I would have ran out of there with my fur baby. My cat is declawed, a senior, and was sick-not necessary to be so rough. I cannot imagine how he stays in business & gets repeat business. Drive outside of town-we go all the way to Lake Oswego from Sandy! NEVER AGAIN.  ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MONEY! I took my   extremely sick dog to Barlow. He had been vomiting and had diarrhea  for two days. I took him in and saw Dr. Christenson who was unable to diagnose what was wrong. He bought back a $600 list of things we could do. I told him I was unemployed and asked him if he had a sliding scale, instead he offered me some sort of credit card. I then asked what he would do  if he where me? He said well" I'm not you" I questioned what is the most important thing on the list.. Well he choose which may have been the most important but also the most expensive thing, which was blood work. Once they took his blood his blood they shot him up with morphine. After a $300 vet bill he was  still unable to diagnosed my dog he sent us home to wait for results. I didn't hear from him for almost a week. I was dealing with his associate that knew nothing about our case.  In the mean time I had taken my dog to another vet. The other vet Companion diagnosed him immediately with salmon poisoning and saved his life.  I was a newer yet loyal client  to Barlow and  had spent a bit of money prior to this incident. I had every intention to continue to be a client . But not after this experience! I am so disappointed in Barlow  trail , it is clear to me Dr. Christenson has lost his love  for his field. It definitely was all about the money. I will never ever go back to Barlow Trail Vet Clinic nor recommend it to anyone .BY THE TIME DR. CHRISTENSON DID CALL ME BACK MY DOG WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD. We have an elderly pygmy goat who really needed her hooves trimmed.  We couldn't get a herd health done because our sheep decided they didn't want their shots and hooves trimmed, so we needed to transport our goat to a vet.I called Barlow Trail and the phone was answered by Courtney, a very friendly young woman, who assured me that Dr Christenson could trim Latté's feet.  So today our little goat suffered the indignities of being put into a dog kennel in the back of my van, and off we went.I met Courtney at the front desk, who was just as friendly in person as she was on the phone.  She told me Dr Christianson would be with us shortly, so I went back out to the car to wait.He came out in a few minutes, and in just a little while, had Latté's badly overgrown hooves trimmed down to where they should be.  He also gave her a tetanus shot and advised us how to care for her hooves for the next couple of weeks and how to trim them ourselves if we wanted to.  Using pruning shears, no less!  Who woulda thunk it?The fees for the service were reasonable, and Dr Christianson was very friendly and helpful.All in all, a very positive experience all the way 'round.  Latté is a lot more comfortable now, and I'm glad we took her to Barlow Trail Vet Clinic.  Which also has an awesome website, by the way.barlowtrailvet.com Read Less
