It is illegal in nearly every state except for PA for a vet to not release a prescription for cat food. But this practice refuses to do so, even after weeks of requests. FOR CAT FOOD! I cannot say enough nice things about this place. The staff is so personable and I feel they truly care about my pet. My dog Marley was just treated for heartworm successfully at Girard Veterinary Clinic and the staff was so excellent with her care! Marley is a rescue from the south, and I originally was taking her to the Pet Mechanic in No Libs for vet appointments. I had taken her to the Pet Mechanic countless times (after she was experiencing some odd symptoms chronically) to try and figure out what was wrong with my poor pup, and every time I went in it seemed like they were just all over the place prescribing different things to try and treat her, none of which worked and all of which were very costly. To be fair some of her symptoms didn't necessarily align with heartworm, but they knew she was a stray in the south during the dead of summer before being rescued so that should've maybe tipped them off that worms could be the root of her issues. I gave up on the Pet Mechanic and I took her to Girard Vet Clinic where after asking me a few questions about her background/symptoms they thought to test for her heartworm (which she obviously tested positive for) and from there on the treatment proceeded very efficiently. I would give this place no stars but really I think it's mostly the vets that are so horrible while the rest of the staff is usually warm and helpful. I've been bringing my old dog here since we moved to the neighborhood over a year ago. I was surprised when my old dog who hates the vet actually seemed to enjoy Girard Vet Clinic. The first few times we came we saw Dr Wilkerson and my husband and I were really happy with how the vet treated our dog. He seemed very engaged and thoughtful. A while later we started seeing Dr Moody at every appointment. Not that we were given a choice, Im not sure anyone is given a choice on which vet they see. For a while we were fine with this because Dr Moody seemed nice enough. Things started going horribly wrong when we would bring our old dog in different things and Dr Moody would order tests with any conclusions afterwards. My husband and I actually started feeling scammed. One time our dog has a cyst on his face and the vet sent the fluid to pathology. When the vet got the pathology results she didn't call she sent us an email saying she didn't know what the cyst was but she recommended we put our 13 year old through surgery. Dr Moody then sent us a separate email with the estimate to do surgery and THEN recommend we call and schedule ASAP. This made me angry and when I asked to speak with a vet Dr Wilkerson came out listened, agreed with my concerns and said he would talk with Dr Moody about getting clearer pathology results and then they would call us within the next few days. No one ever called. A similar situation has happened since but with more expensive xrays and every single time we see Dr Moody it seems like maybe she doesn't actually know us even though we see her frequently through the year for normal blood work and old age related issues. She forgot what she had prescibed our dog and it's become pretty obvious she doesn't care about our dog or us as people and paying customers. When we have ever tried to complain or even just ask for an explanation of a diagnosis we can't seem to ever get a vet on the phone and no one ever ends up calling us back. Read Less

They’ve been our regular vet for check ups, and they’ve also performed a successful dental surgery for our cat in the past year. LOVE the new owner and vets! They are friendly, helpful and most importantly really thorough with my doggo's care. [ they are also WAY more affordable than most other full service clinics I've been to. ] I ran out of my dog's medication last minute and couldn't make it in before they closed to pick up her refill so one of the staff members came to deliver it to my house! Just had a consult at University Of Penna. In essence, they confirmed EVERY SINGLE aspect of my dog's (complex) diagnosis and treatment at Girard. While there is some comfort in affirming the plan for my dog's situation, I would suggest you might see this as an important endorsement of a clinic with expertise & loving care at a place that does it's best to keep that care affordable. Dr. Wilkerson was great: smart and empathetic - and this even though he delivered some terrible news to my family. We unfortunately had to put down our beloved golden retriever due to pancreatic cancer that had spread throughout his body. I would never wish this experience on even my worst enemy, but if you ever have to go through it- I hope you get a Vet as compassionate as understanding as Dr. Wilkerson and the staff at Girard Vet. (not to mention the prices were SO much less compared to the suburbs where we used to go - and he saved us costly surgery that wouldn't have helped as he did chest x-rays before sending us to the specialist). The whole staff was friendly, helpful and really made the whole trip as "good" as it could possibly have been. Speechless.I paid over $300 and would like to express that the girl cashing people out was unfriendly and rude.  I actually feel bad for the other receptionists that work with her.  She should have taken the time to talk me through my invoice.  Instead she just blurted the amount I owed--  without even giving me the bill. Really? Who hands over $300 + without knowing what they're paying for?!  No "thank you", no nothing.  I work in the service industry and would NEVER treat anyone like that.  And because of her-- I won't go back.  Whoever answered the phone was really nice and understanding.  She fit me in last minute when I wasn't able to get to my original appointment.  I really appreciated that!The new vet was friendly-- I'll give him that.  But I know my cat has serious health issues and I'll go to another vet for a diagnosis.  Antibiotics are not going to make her better.  Matter of fact-- as soon as I came home she threw up everywhere.  The x-ray machine wasn't working, which is probably the only way I will find the answer about my cats health.  They took a urine and fecal sample, but didn't even tell me when I'd know the results.  So frustrating.All in all-- I'm completely unsatisfied with my visit for my cats health, I'm annoyed, and I definitely will not go back to the GVC.  I know the neighborhood- I understand that it makes ya a little tough- but there was no reason for the receptionists actions.To the gal with heavy makeup:  "I'm sorry your life is so miserable that you need to make others feel that way." I like Girard Vet a lot. They're practical and reasonably priced. I had previously brought my pets to the Penn Vet, where I was charged exorbitant prices for impractical remedies and poor advice. I bring my two dogs to Girard Vet, one rescue, one purebred. We've been through treatments for heart worm (the rescue) and ear infections (the purebred). Both recovered just fine.The only cons are sometimes long waiting times (which I also experienced at Penn) and the size of the waiting room. It's challenging to keep a 100-pound young dog controlled in a tiny waiting room filled with other animals and people. :)Note that the doctors have changed at Girard Vet in the last year. Not only are they organized and helpful but they are amazing at what they do and the prices on exams, shots and especially surgeries are fair unlike other places, thanks to the vets and this clinic my dog was saved from a bad infection she had, had I not found them sooner I wouldn't of had my little fur baby who is now 7 thanks to them! I was referred to this place by a neighbor. My dog goes to the SPCA annually for a check up and for his annual shots so he's in good health. My new groomer doesn't express anal glands so I called this place to make an appt. I was quoted $37 on the phone, needless to say that I was charged darn near double once the process was completed. I was told that since my dog was new to this clinic that he had to see a doctor in order to get his glands expressed (of course I was told this afterwards, although I stated on the phone that this would be our 1st visit). I definitely won't be returning nor will I recommend a place that handles their business in a underhanded manner. Read Less

Dr. Balzer is opinionated and aggressive in her demeanor and in no way sensitive to the customer. She insisted my house needed professional exterminators even though there were absolutely no fleas anywhere in sight on any of my cats and I have NEVER had a flea infestation. On another occasion I brought my cat in to find out about some dental work. I was given an estimate of anywhere from $400 - $1200 dollars...really?!? Kind of a large window. Today was my second and last visit here. See cause last month I took my dog in for an exam and shots. Before I left that day I had to make another appointment for his booster shot for rabies. When given the receipt I see that I was charged for an exam again @$44 .!! Why was that when he didn't need another exam, he only needed the shot. !! I have had nothing but positive experiences with Girard Vet Clinic. They have been very accommodating of my schedule in order to get our dog in ASAP for any problems for which she needed care. They even went out of their way fit me in when they were closing one evening when I stopped by to make an appointment. I have worked primarily with Dr. Weiner who has been able to quickly solve any issues our pet was having and he was extremely caring with her. I can't say enough about these gals and guys. I called Crying on Wendnesday around noon, and My Cat Lover was in their office being triaged by 2. We thought for sure he was going to have to be put to sleep, as we had been dealing with him having a very agressive cancer in his arm, for about 6 months, and it refused to go away, after removal of the lump (also performed by Girard Veterinary Clinic). Instead of putting him to sleep they insisted/ strongly suggested we amputate the leg. Now it is Friday and he is back home, without his leg BUT STILL WITH US. Threw all of this very stressful event for our cat and us, they have been positive and extremely kind, to both our cat and my partener and myself. I have been to many Vets and there is just no comparison. My Partner and myself know our cats but have little knowledge of this extreme medical condition that we have all been threw with Lover (the cats name). When we needed a knowledgeful vet and clinic on our side, that is just what we got with Girard Veterinary Clinic. Wow, my first time here. I took my pug, Cleo here because she looks like she has eye infection. It turn out she doesn't. The vet makes sure that there is nothing else wrong with her. I had to wait for an hour but it's worth waiting. And the vet fee and medicine are very reasonable price. Read Less
