I have been to ark many times over the past 3 years, and while they are clean and friendly enough, I cannot get past their prices and unfair charges. My dog had some bloating and I was concerned about it so they saw me sort of last minute. For the exam (they charged it as an emergency visit for some reason even though it was during normal business hours) and some other small tests I was charged $130.00. The other tests were not x-rays or blood tests or anything. Small tests that should not have been that much money. I also feel compelled to add that they will guilt trip you or scare you into taking the extra step and getting another test done or another procedure. Many times I had gone, and like many others, I was on a budget. I explained this to them and I was pressured into some other things I should not have been. If you go, even for a check up, be prepared to spend $100 or more. They'll find a reason to run more tests or whatever it is they do. I also need to add this. I had a one year old cat who was seen for a bladder blocked with crystals. To fix it, he needed a $1,300.00 surgery. At that moment I wasn't prepared to spend that, so instead of offering a payment plan or maybe 4 installments of the total, I was forced to euthanize my cat. They offered care credit but I didn't have enough credit history and I got denied. No option for in house line of credit or anything. No exceptions. So instead of my cat leading a healthy life, they gave me no option and he is now dead. I find that wrong that they were so concerned about the money side of it, they couldn't look past it to save my cats life. A true vet would have worked with me to help the cat. I have since found another vet that would put my cat or dog first, and money second.They will continue to be my back up vet as they are close and again, very clean, but I will never take my pets there by choice the first time around. Dr. Sampson made us feel most welcome and appreciated as new clients. I felt that he took a nice amount of time to examine my cats and worked well with their idiosyncrasies. I never feel pressured to add on expensive tests just to add to the bill. Everyone genuinely cares about your pet's well being. Having come from another vet hospital where I always felt pressured to do expensive tests and using scare tactics to make me feel like a bad pet parent if I didn't do them, and all to pad the bill, I find the approach here so much better. And if the Doc feels like we need to take it a step further I am far more inclined to believe it is for a genuine need for my pet's health and not just to add on to the bill. When my pets have needed surgical interventions the estimates have always been reasonable and on the money, often on the lower end of the estimate as they give you a range from a low to a high price. MY dog Hank loves the vet. When we walk in his tail starts wagging. We are greeted right away and wait time is very minimal. When the nurse/assistant comes to get us, we are welcomed with a smile and some hugs. Hank loves the doctors and assistants. When we are there the care is wonderful. The staff loves to stop by and give hank treats and he just loves the attention. The appointments are quick and easy and the care exceeds expectations. We have been bringing our 4 legged kids here for almost 10 years now. Ark Vets go above and beyond in service and caring alone. They are always able to squeeze us in when our little Boston decides to be dramatic and a diva starving for attention and demanding emergency visits because she's been keeping us up since 2am.....Everyone and I mean everyone from the receptionist and to the doctors are very accommodating, knowledgeable, price conscious and very very caring. We have our favorites when it comes to Ark Veterinarians but lately we have been obsessed over Dr. Sampson. You can just feel you and your pet are in good hands the moment he comes into the room, kneels down and says hi to your pet. He's very informative, knowledgeable, sensible, logical and caring. I swear he treats our little Boston Terrier diva as if she was his own. This establishment is very clean and the hours are very good,however their prices are outrageous, just to ask a vet a question I was charged for a full examination which my pet had the previous month. Also I have waited much too long in the examination room for the dr to enter, not good when dog is nervous to be there. Had our first appointment here last week and it was a wonderful experience, despite the long wait. The Dr. was very knowledgable about my dog's breed, and the medical concern I was having with him. He was given a medication and an ointment for the problem area which has quickly healed. Both Vet and tech were friendly and helpful about everything. They had patience with my dog who hates having his nails clipped. I also him tested for heartworm and the Vet called me personally with the results which was a great and personal touch. Recently asked about getting my older, chronically ill indoor cat a rabies shot and the doctor assured me it was fine to do since he responded fine to it in the past. He was there for a very minor eye infection and I opted to go for the shot because I was concerned and worried about him and wanted to make sure we had all our bases covered. He got noticeably sicker after that visit and stopped eating and drinking before needing to be put to sleep just slightly over a week later. The shot may or may not have contributed to this, but if they had explained the potential risks I never would have agreed to it. On top of that, the following week when he was very confused, stumbling, and lethargic -- so they recommended keeping him overnight for fluids and never told me he was not getting fluids at night. I didn't learn of this until after going to pick him up when they mentioned in passing that they only had reconnected his IV in the morning. We were under the impression that he was going to be on constant fluids to help him recover. That means we could have been taking him home at night (instead of just visiting him) to spend time with him, or we could have taken him to a hospital with 24-hour care and it's very possible he'd still be with us. They should be required to disclose this. It just felt like he was already at a disadvantage from the rabies shot, and then we made another mistake by agreeing to entrust him to their care for fluids. It's possible it was his time, but now we have to live with the feeling that we may not have made the best decisions because we were putting too much trust in others process instead of catering to his needs. I spent 8 years taking great care of him and now I have to live with the guilt of these final decisions and it feels awful. He did not deserve this. I now realize we should have left this place a long time ago when the owner walked in at one appointment making recommendations for him without even ever reading his file. When I explained his history the reply was, "Okay, nevermind then." It just seemed very non-scientific and presumptuous. Any doctor should review medical history before jumping to conclusions. I do want to note: The vet techs and the office staff were always very friendly and helpful. That said, you will only get the same veterinarian assigned to your pet more than once if you request it every time or the odds work in your favor. They tended to just assign whichever veterinarian was free during your visit. In essence, this is not a personal service. Read Less

My name is Jennifer and we took our cat Cleo to Ark on Dec 13 when i could not get ahold of my regular vet. Our beloved cat was not acting right and I just knew it. her breathing was off and she was very lazy. I called, got right in, they took me the minute i walked in. unfortunately our cat - only 7 and in great health the day before - was in heart failure and her body temp plummeted. Dr Johnson was very caring as were all the staff. He gave us options, in the end we chose what we all thought was best. Cleo was a wonderful addition to our family and was loved beyond belief. We first went to their clinic last day on August because we had just moved to the state and found we needed all sorts of extra vaccines and dog licensing. The staff were amazingly friendly and helped us with paperwork. We setup another appointment to see Dr. Smith who came highly recommended for physical exams and more vaccines. My family and I just relocated to PA and needed to find a new Veterinarian for our two little monster dogs, and we found Ark Animal Hospital, and set up an appointment with Dr. Smith. We loved them. The staff was truly wonderful and Dr. Smith was very knowledgeable and took time to explain what vaccines we would need for the doggie day cares around here as well as just for the environment since we moved from the South. Dr. Smith also took time to recommend some day cares as well as which ones to steer clear of, and recommended switching out our flea and tick control to a better one. Dr. Smith and the Ark staff are just amazingly knowledgeable people, and I am glad we found them. On two more notes, they have a product called pill paste, similar to pill pockets, that is about the same cost, but doesn't contain chicken and will last longer--my dogs loved it. And secondly, since both our dogs have some form of arthritis, Dr. Smith offered us a new regimen of treatment to add that should aid in more relief. Read Less

I have gone to ark since my Maggie was a puppy -and for last 5 yrs or so only saw dr. Neff as my Maggie was not a very good patient. However on 5/14/16 my Maggie was not herself and I knew something was wrong so I took her to ark and saw a dr. Who I never saw before. She seemed nice but couldn't find anything wrong looking at her and suggested an X-ray. I asked the cost and was told $150 (the vet never included $70 to review the X-ray) which j feel she should have mentioned. The X-ray did show that Maggie had masses in her lungs and said if was lung cancer and that I should think about what I wanted to do. She made it sound like she would be gone in a day or 2 (Maggie was with us for 7wks after diagnosed) but gave her a steriod and Maggie was eating again but panting all the time. About 3 weeks later she got re sick again and I called a mobile vet to come to the house and she felt the steriod dose was too high and to cut in half. Maggie sprang back again. The new vet asked for her records which I asked ark to fax and they did but only her X-rays. The new vet confirmed she did have lung cancer. Maggie passed away on 7/5/16 with me telling her it's ok to go. I miss her dearly but know she is free from pain. I am most upset that never once did any dr from ark ever call to see hiow Maggie was and change the steriod dose. Please know that I was calling every week for them to fill her prescription and I just can't believe how no compassion was ever shown. I guess my husband is right, ark is just a business and no one cares. I will never return to ark.Read Less

My family recently had to make the hard choice of ending our black labs pain. She had several conditions that were causing her constant pain and making it hard for her to get around. We could no longer stand to see her that way and after looking at her the staff here agreed with our choice. From the moment we got there I know we made the right choice. The staff was very nice and you could tell they shared in our grief. Its never easy saying goodbye to a fur member of the family but they did it in a way that didn't leave the heart bleeding. My family has been going to this hospital for years. They are excellent! They treat the dogs with compassion. My family Golden named Jimmy went here from when he was a pup to when we had to let him go. The entire time they were so kind and loving to Jimmy. Even at the end in his senior days, they did not take advantage of us by trying to run all kinds of unnecessary tests. They were honest about our dogs health and outcome. When it came time to put him down, they were very compassionate and comforting.Now I own my own puppy and this is my first choice for a vet. I don't live in the area and it is a lengthy drive, but I wouldn't go anywhere else! I am so pleased and confident my dog is in good hands. Dr. Smith is a wonderful vet and owner. My family and I have been using Ark Animal Hospital for over 25 years for all species of pets. Dr. Smith and her staff is second to none for all animal care. They really make your pet and you feel right at home and part of the family. I now take my Brittany Astor there and he loves it! Dr. Smith has been the most helpful medical professional I have ever come across in the Veterinary world. She gave me the tools I needed, always made herself available, and always gave me several options on going about things. She and the rest of her staff appear very sympathetic to struggles and I feel on more than one occasion they have gone above and beyond some usual care to ensure that my lovely pet Rabbits are okay. I had one rabbit who had a surprise problem which caused her eye to need immediate extraction and even though it was expensive when observed by the cost of a rabbit itself - my baby was saved.(And severely cheaper than every other vet was offering to do it for.) I was given several phone councils for advice on how to proceed with things, as far as getting ideas and running it across her which further helped my rabbits recovery. Today I went in again with my other rabbit who appears to have a bacterial infection in his jawline. She remains positive and hopeful that he -can- make a full recovery if kept up on. While I know there are -no- 100% guarantees in the medical world, especially when coupled with pets that cannot tell you what they feel like. I love these people! Chosen at random because I was new to the area I was there for two days during the worst week of my life and let me tell you the people at Ark Animal Hospital were a pleasure to see and talk to even when my poor kitten was fatally sick and had to be put down. They are all so sweet and understanding. I considered taking my cat in as an emergency and the price was $75. That's insanely reasonable especially in a Philly suburb. Their other prices were great and they don't push anything on you (the doctor told me the price of obviously needed blood-work as if I might turn it down instead of like most doctors who just go ahead and do everything). When I had to put my kitty down they offered a check-up before hand and then told me it was completely fine if I said no instead of pressuring me into it. When I get a new kitty friend I will be heading here 100%! Thank you guys :)Read Less
