*POSTING FOR MY MOTHER*I brought my barely five pound Chihuahua, Teddy, to Summit Pet Hospital & Care Center to get his nails clipped on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. I have been using this vet for the same dog for the past year. This time, when they brought him back to me after cutting his nails, my clothes got covered in blood. Upon examination, I discovered his foot was bleeding. I alerted the vet tech, who said it was just his nail, and proceeded to put the quick stop powder on it. We thought everything was okay from there, so I went ahead and paid. My daughter came over to play with Teddy and noticed that the pad of his paw was cut, too. We, then, alerted the same vet tech, and she put a tissue adhesive on the cut. When I got home that night, I noticed Teddy wouldn't walk on it much and I could tell he was in pain. We looked at it again the next morning and it had broken open. I called and spoke to the same vet tech from the previous day. She said they would be able to call in some antibiotics and I could buy a bacitracin spray. I asked if the vet could take a look at it and if they would be willing to cover the aftercare products. I figured it was only fair seeing as I did not cause his injury. At that point she was starting to get an attitude and rudely stated that the spray was "only $3.00." I just asked what time the vet would be in, thanked her for the information, and hung up. I called back later that day to speak with the vet. When Dr. Susan Stroupe answered I started to give her the information when she cut me off. "Oh, I know who you are. You are the one with the BAD DOG. All of those smaller dogs are BAD DOGS. You only bring him here because he is so BAD you can't cut his nails yourself." I tried to explain that his nails are black and my vision isn't the best, so I would rather a professional do it to avoid cutting him. She interrupted me again to tell me how that was not the real reason I bring him there and how bad he is, then she hung up on me. A few moments later, the vet tech called to confirm our address. I told her, "It doesn't matter what our address is, we will not be returning," then I just hung up. She called back several times and would not stop until I answered and told her they were harassing us.Needless to say, this was a horrible experience that should not have happened. Please, if you love your pets, do not make them endure unnecessary pain. Never use this vet. Ever. Read Less

I had a very poor experience at Summit Pet Hosp 2 years ago. My wife took our 5 year feline ("Tucker") in for exam because he wasn't himself. Initially, she was told that he was constipated and would be Ok after he got an enema. Staff brought he back by the scruff of the neck wet with water & feces and then she was told he was severely anemic and dying. My wife cleaned him up. We told them we wanted to bring him home to euthanize him amongst family but he choked and died minutes after getting home. He was a really great cat and we never forgave them for making his last day horrific. We paid the bill. Never even got a condolence card. So many better choices in Erie to take your pet. Read Less

Terrible experience! Do not take your pet here. I have spent tons of money on medicine and check ups at Summit only to find out that my pet didn't have what they "diagnosed" him with. I felt awful that I trusted this place to care for my pet. I brought him in for multiple glucose tests only to be turned away. My pet had high levels and and told me to come back in a week. The assistant was the only person working at that time (which they told me to bring him at that time and day) and she couldn't get a sample. That is not caring about my pet. I took him to another vet and was sick to find out he was on meds he didn't even need and had an illness they didn't bother to find. Please don't take your pet here. Read Less

The sad part about this rating is that it isn't about the doctor at all. It's about the nurse/secretary. If I tell you I don't want a test for my kitten, THAT MEANS I DON'T WANT A TEST FOR MY KITTEN. It does not mean, go ahead and do it anyways. And all the secret charges with vaccines is outrageous. If you tell me it's $54 for vaccines I expect to pay that and that only. NOT come back in a month and pay all that again. PLUS a single checkup being $42 which I also have to pay twice. But all of that isn't even the worst part..when I tried to get my money back the nurse/secretary got so frustrated she told me I couldn't come back. WRONG! I am the customer and you are doing a service for ME. And btw, don't lie to me and tell me that test is so necessary and life or death because I know for a fact it is not. Worst experience I've ever had. July of last year I took my young cat here for evaluation due to digestive problems. $145 to give him dewormers (not the problem). Followed up because problem still wasn't resolved a week later. Charged for another full check up. Whisked him back for blood work (around $500!) without telling me how expensive it would be. (Called around and every other vet charges a fraction of that for the same tests). Brought him back to me still dripping blood down his neck. Called me to tell me he has a pancreatic insufficiency and needed this very expensive enzyme powder to add to his food. I was skeptical, so I requested a copy of his lab results, which they finally gave me after standing in the office over 20 mins (Stroup was "too busy to answer questions at that time"),which was awfully convenient since the results showed that his pancreatic function was well within normal limits, as were the rest of his results with the exception of his blood glucose (because it wasn't properly collected and spun). I put him on Purina gentle food and he has been fine ever since... put on some weight and perfectly healthy (and mischievous as ever!). Stroup was very nice while she was taking my money, but I would recommend going elsewhere if you want someone who will be honest and up front with you. For an "exotic" vet, their's sure doesn't know much about "exotic pets". I recommend doing a bit more research on pet rats and what surgeries can and cannot be performed. Neutering is something that is very commonly done... as well as spaying, and tumor removal. Spaying a female rat actually helps to prevent mammary tumors from developing. As well as research on their characteristics and temperaments. Also - neutering a male rat CAN actually help them with aggression. It has helped in MANY cases. Male rats CAN be homed with other male rats. I have owned many over the years and have homed many of them together. Out of DOZENS I have had in my 20 years experience with them, only 3 have had to be caged separately due to aggression. The one I was looking to get fixed was homed with 2 others and had been fine up until recently. The ones he was homed with were fine with him when he was introduced to them at 6 weeks of age. ALL rats need a companion. They are social animals and not to be kept alone. One place to start your research would be Debbie Ducommun's website ratfanclub dot org She has written and published multiple books that many exotic vets use. She has had YEARS of experience - well over 40 years. I do however appreciate the return phone call... despite the fact that nothing I was told was actually true.Read Less

I went in worried about my fuzzy friend who pooped blood on my kitchen floor earlier today, and also had a torn dew claw that was really bothering her. I waited about 20 minutes in an exam room where there was dried blood on the exam room floor, when I pointed it out to the vet tech she said it was from a dog getting his nails clipped, but she didn't clean it up *ewwww* When the vet came in she immediately (before even checking vitals or dew claw) said my dog didn't have Parvo and could be treated with antibiotics, she also said my sick dog should get another round of her vaccinations, I told her she had them less than 6 months ago and she said "rottweilers can take more than 1 shot" *money grubbers* She spent the rest of the visit talking to me like a child, at one point she said "you should have been prepared for vet bills before taking on a dog" when I asked if we could prevent future torn dew claws/infections/expensive vet bills by removing them. When I didn't have enough cash on me to pay I asked if they could bill me or if I could run to the bank and they said I should call someone... I don't know who I could call to come pay a vet bill for me so I left to go to the bank. The vet followed me to my car and called me a f $#@ing idiot for not having enough money on me to take my dog to the vet... I'm appauled, and offended, and really glad my kids were not with me. I've been going here for about 25 years (wow, time does fly by). Originally because the previous place treated my old dog like a number, no consideration for the individual's age or physical condition. Summit Pet Hospital has ALWAYS treated my dog, cats, rabbits with compassion & dignity, just like we all would like to be treated. They have become like a family to us! Besides that, they are always on the cutting edge of what's going on as far as new treatments & care of them all also!! Love them tons!!! Read Less

Unnecessary  expensive tests without prior consultation or approval.  The  obvious the obvious  upsell  slathered in heavy layer of guilt.  My gut instincts were right.  If I could go back in time, I would have never brought my pet here.  This vet and staff have no guilt about the needless suffering they caused me and my dog.
