We have been clients of Macungie Animal Hospital for nearly nine years.  I will say that it has gone downhill, especially in the past few years.  Some of the newer doctors they have brought in I have found to be very inexperienced and unsure of what they were doing with out dogs.  On that note, I always request Dr. Keener or Dr. Hernandez.  The other reason for this is that I found the other doctors are quick to prescribe expensive medicines or other therapies that we found to be unnecessary.  Perhaps the biggest reason that I am switching over to a different local veterinarian is my most recent visit to the clinic where I picked up a prescription.  The front desk attendant was just plain rude...  which is not the norm, not at all!  The nurse that they sent out to answer the question I had (and keep in mind this is the second time I have seen this nurse about one of my dogs) is, and there is no other word for it, judgmental and condescending.  Additionally, they have taken on these policies in the past years to up-charge clients (an additional $27 for a nurse only visit... in the past you could bring your pet in for one vaccine and not be charged additionally, which was nice for the vaccines that they don't get on the annual checkups). Plus, the medication we give our pet regularly is averaging $40 a month more expensive to purchase from Macungie Animal Hospital than the exact same brand-name from Wegman's Pharmacy.  In short, this was a great animal hospital.  However, the norm over there lately has been more charges for less-than service.I would have liked to stay clients here, but in the long run I think it's best to start having our pets seen at another local animal hospital that will hopefully remain more focused on animal care than just growth.  If you choose this animal hospital my recommendation would be to ask for Dr. Keener or Dr. Hernandez. I took one of our cats here about a month ago and talked to them about bringing in another cat to get a checkup and groomed all in one shot, there are two vets literally right down the block from us but both of them wanted me to bring him in for a wellness visit first then try to catch him again to bring in for the grooming; we had been going to a vet who also is excellent but is 9 miles away down a busy highway and when you are traveling 55-60 m.p.h. the cats get cranked up, Macungie is half the distance and half the speed and they were willing to let me bring him in and do it all one shot and they were so so caring and did a great job, they could tell that this cat means the world to me and were just so wonderful with him and me and my wife, definitely will be going back!!! So pleased with Dr. Boyer and her staff! I started bringing my dog to her after he experienced an issue with his tail and I had no previous vet in the area. Not only did they get me in for an appointment the same day I called, but we’re polite and caring when it came to his visit! They called to follow up a few days later and it showed just how much they truly care about their patients! After temporarily moving away and experiencing a similar issue with my dog in a different state, I called Dr. Boyer for advice. She returned my call that day, after being in surgery, and took the time to answer all questions I had with true compassion. I highly recommend her and her staff to care for your loving pet. Very caring and understanding staff. Couldn’t ask for more out the vets and staff there. We lost our dog suddenly and they ensured that we were well taken care of sympathetic though we were not regular patients. We will be using them all of our pets’ needs. My beloved dog Rocky was a patient there. He unfortunately passed away on January 19th after having to be rushed to valley central animal hospital in the middle of the night. To my unexpected surprise today in the mail I received a sympathy card from Macungie Animal Hospital. It was signed by most of their staff. It brought tears to my eyes but it shows how much they care about you and your pets. I highly recommend them to everyone. At first I thought that this was a very nice hospital with knowledgeable doctors that really care about animals. The events that took place in the last week proved otherwise. I realized that unfortunately, their greatest motive is money. Your pet's health is secondary. My cat was diagnosed with kidney failure and for the last four or so months, I have been a loyal customer of Macungie Animal Hospital. I came in every single week so my cat could get sub-q fluids put under her skin, and to purchase said fluids. This clinic is a 30 minute drive from me, but I didn't mind because I want the best care possible for my pet. On the last visit, I was charged a nurse fee. This was weird as I was never charged this fee before. I called to schedule another appointment for the following week and was told that I was actually scheduled for a check up, WITHOUT MY CONSENT. The check up itself is only $37 but I have a gut feeling that they would not give me anymore fluids unless I agreed to a costly blood test. Again, I don't mind spending the money but here is the kicker, I am moving to another city in 10 days. Today, we drove 30 minutes to pick up some fluids, cancel the appointment and give my cat the fluids at home. They refused to provide the fluids without the appointment. When I tried to explain that I am moving in 10 days and see no point in spending money for a blood test here, just to turn around and spend a similar amount in my new city, they didn't care, at all...I ended up grabbing my pet's records and have to call around and try to schedule an appointment in my new city...an hour and a half away, and hope that my cat is going to be ok without her weekly fluids. And to top it all off, they wrote on my record that I am cancelling the appointment because I don't want to pay $400, making me sound like a cheap skate and forgetting to mention that it is BECAUSE I AM MOVING IN 10 DAYS AND DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR THE SAME TEST TWICE IN 10 DAYS. How unprofessional. Don't fall for their accreditation. They don't care if your pet gets necessary medication, as long as they can pocket as much money as possible. P.S. They have been bugging me for a second blood test, ONE MONTH after the first one. We already know that she has kidney failure and I fully understand that she will need further blood tests, but getting them done every 1-3 months is unnecessary. Read Less

Many years ago they took awesome care of our dog Kringle. Dr Soares came in on her day off and assisted with a complicated surgery. Kringle survived for a good five years after surgery and they we're great years. We continue to see Dr Hernandez who is very knowledgeable and loving towards animals . Sent my dog away for emergency surgery that we were told would cost 2000 dollars. Only to get there and find out the surgery would cost 8 to 10000 dollars long story short he had to be put down. Don't go here they referred us to a hospital an hour away for emergency surgery for our beloved dog, saying it would cost 2000 dollars we drove all the way there for the surgery to be 8000-10000 dollars. Don't understand why a simple phone couldn't of been made finding out the exact cost. I am angered and very upset. My dog had to be put down. My husband and I have taken our golden retriever Cole to MAH for years and love our annual check ups with Dr. Hernandez. She always gets down on the floor to pet and kiss him like her were her own pet. Her exceptional care led my mom to take her golden retriever there 2 1/2 years ago for a second opinion on a tumor. I was disappointed that Dr. Hernandez's schedule was booked; Kendall met Dr. Soares and she performed his surgery. The compassion and care that Kendall received from Dr. Soares and the rest of the staff has touched my mom and my family - we were able to spend another 2 1/2 years with Kendall until today. Again, we were greeted with genuine sympathy and compassion when he crossed the rainbow bridge this morning. Dr. Soares, we will carry your kind words about Kendall with us forever. We know what a great dog he was because he was ours for 14 years, but you were intuitive to that in a few short hours while he was in your care. The entire staff at MAH has found their calling. I can't write enough good things about Dr. Keehner. My eight month old pup has an extensive medical background. Dr. Keehner truly is amazing. She always takes time out of her day to ask how he is doing and check up on him. They also always make time to fit our little guy in when we need it. They always read all our pup's specialists reports also and work with us to find him great doctors. I can't thank Macungie Animal Hospital enough for what they have done to help with our little one! All of the staff is very accommodating. After receiving allergy tests on our pup, Dr. Keehner extensively researched dog foods for us and called Royal Canin to find the right match for him. Highly recommend Dr. Keehner! She shows compassion for her clients. We also just met Dr. Boyer who was very helpful in helping us when she heard a heart murmur on our little guy. Also Lynn is amazing! She always calms my anxiety when Nelson is having a bad day. We go to the vet often and they never make me feel "crazy" or a bother. They were treating my puppy for worms for 3 weeks, even though they didn't test his stool sample because "They didn't get around to it or something got missed" - Their words. Bring in the worm to them because after 3 weeks of being treated, he still had them. That's not a worm that's a maggot" So my poor puppy has maggots inside of him for over 3 weeks and they say well that happens when you don't pick up the poop. I pick his poop up immediately after he drops it. They don't believe me and say"our next available appt is in 2 weeks" Unbelievable, these people are brushing off my dogs problem like it's not a problem. Took him to Q town vet and they said they need to treat him right away because SOMEHOW he has maggots inside of him!!! I cannot believe Macungie Animal Hospital and how they treated us. I love MAH! I am so thankful for the caring staff that always get me in when my dogs need to be seen. I had a husky who was very sick in her last 2 years and they made us feel like family. I even got a hand written card from Dr Hernandez when she passed. Now they do everything they can to accommodate my crazy 1 year old boxer mix but the staff, even if I am seeing a different doctor my normal doctor and staff come in and say hi and give us a hug. I have never had a practice be so passionate about their patients and the family! They don't just take care of the animals, they take care of the entire family too! Read Less

I have had nothing but positive experiences. I frequent this facility every 6 weeks for my dogs chiropractic services. Dr. G is warm, compassionate, knowledgeable, and caring. If it wasn't for her and the advice and homework she has given me my Oscar wouldn't be as far along as he is. The front desks staff is just as pleasant. All they would do was offer very expensive laser therapy and acupuncture. They would not even prescribe pain medicine, or return calls for further help. I ended up taking my dog to VSEC (an emergency center an hour away) and my dog needed spinal surgery. Macungie Animal Hospital missed all the signs and did absolutely nothing for my animal. They are full of inept, unqualified, and uncaring doctors and staff. Who offers laser treatment for hundreds of dollars, when a dog is in need of serious medical attention? This is the type of place that looks beautiful on the inside, but lets a dog go in pain for a week with little concern or direction. In fact, they seemed annoyed that I continued to press them, repeating that something was wrong with my dog. Thank goodness I did not let it go, and found proper care for my pup. I could never go back and recommend that you don't bother either. Go to Hamilton Animal Care instead! They took such good care of my dog after this awful experience. Read Less

Having been voted the Top Animal Hospital in the nation for 2013 should tell you volumes about the level of clinical expertise and care the entire staff at MAH provides to their patients and parents. My husband and I have been taking our two dogs here for a while, and I'm so glad we found a practice like this. Everything is great: quick scheduling appointments, they don't make you wait an hour after your appointment time, the building is modern yet cozy, the staff are amazing. The people who work here all treat my pet as if it were their pet and it makes a difference. I feel like the vets took the time to establish a relationship not only with us, but with our dogs. The procedures they have done were explained thoroughly, we were given options, and they went over and patiently explained all test results to us. They never made me feel dumb for asking questions and they never tried to impose their will on my decisions. I cannot say enough great things about this practice. Macungie Animal Hospital has the absolute best, most caring Vets. When my dog had back problems and ultimately back surgery, Dr. Hernandez called me every day, including Saturday night and Sunday to check on me and my dog. After the surgery, Dr. Soares came to my house to take the staples out and do cold laser treatments. They have continuously gone above and beyond what I would ever expect a vet (or human doctor for that matter) to do. They also have a Chiropractor, Dr. Gigliotti who is fantastic as well.
