I originally found this vet in 2010, needing emergency services for my dog. They were great and I didn't feel like I was ripped off. I started taking my dogs for regular check ups there and always felt like she was attentive and experienced. Fast forward to today, my cat was not himself and was lethargic. I called and they were able to fit me in. Dr. Hellers knowledge and experience came to the rescue again. My kitty is home and I didn't even need to make another stop for his medication. Thank you Dr. Heller! Read Less

I scheduled my ferret to have a small mast cell tumor removed with Dr. Heller after she told me (after a 5 minute evaluation) that this was indeed what he had. She quoted to me $300-$500 ("we can't tell you how much, it's based on time") just for the surgery, $120 for bloodwork, after the $44 initial visit. I went in to drop off my best friend, in tears and very worried, and the staff did very, very little to calm me down or make me feel better. This price is severely inflated from the $125 quote that Dr. Wagner gave me, and in the end I cancelled my appointment with Dr. Heller, as I felt severely ripped off and lied to.Read Less

I recently took my cat to Borderbrook where she was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. While Dr. Heller was examining her, she ordered her trainee to hold the cat. When the trainee didn't hold her as the Dr. expected, the Dr. rudely scolded the trainee, saying in a nasty tone, "YOUR job is to protect ME." It was uncomfortable and we felt sorry for the trainee who was trying her best. We received a prescription for a 10-day antibiotic, and when the cat seemed to be worse on the 6th day, I called Borderbrook first thing in the morning to ask if she could be seen. I was told the doctor was booked, and that the following day she wouldn't be in the office. The assistant suggested I call East Suburban Animal Hospital. Rather, I called Northern Pike Vet (at the recommendation of a pet sitter/groomer) and explained the situation to a courteous assistant (Amanda), who told me to bring the cat in at the close of their day. I would like to add that when I arrived one hour early at Borderbrook for our initial visit (I had the time wrong), the woman at the desk told me that I did not have an appointment and that I must have called East Suburban by mistake. She was not pleasant, and she didn't bother to look at the schedule in front of her until we were ready to leave the office. She seemed to be more concerned with my time error and explaining to me the doctor's hours and how I couldn't have possibly made the appointment with her. She finally looked at the schedule in front of her, and realized that I had indeed made an appointment - there was no apology forthcoming. She suggested we leave and come back at the scheduled time, which we did. This entire experience, from the time we entered the office until the time we called for what we considered an emergency, was most unpleasant. The reason for the one star is for the call we received the day after the initial visit to ask how Satin was.Read Less

I would NOT recommend bringing any of your pets here, even if their lives depended on it like my new baby orphaned kitten!!!!Around 11:30 at night I found this kitten (new born) outside in a pile of dirt covered in fly eggs, fleas, etc. I took him in, washed him with Dawn dish soap and tried to feed him water and milk. I have never had a cat this small in my possession before. This was the place I came to because it was the only one that opened earlier than 10am the very next day. The two ladies who worked as vet nurses were very warm-hearted and welcoming to me and my new little baby cat. The vet came into the examination room and immediately started pounding me with questions: "Did you feed him" - I tried, but he declined both warm milk and water, "You actually offered him people milk? WELL did you even think about buying kitten formula?!" she snapped back. I did not even know there was such thing. I explained to her that I've never owned a cat this small or young before and she continued to snap out at me. "Did he go to the bathroom since you found him 12 hours ago?" I replied (now scared to even answer) "Not to my knowledge, he's had the same towels since I cleaned him with Dawn dish soap to get the eggs and fleas off and they are not soiled". She was now furious with me and yelled "YOU WASHED HIM WITH DAWN?! How could you do that he's too young for ANY soap. Oh, and do you even KNOW how to potty train an infant kitten?". At this point I was in tears. She briefly showed me how to make the kitten go to the bathroom, and did not show me (or even offer to show me) nor told me how to feed this kitten. She neglected to examine the kitten for tics, worms, or any other kind of health-threatening pests. This went back and forth for the whole visit and she made it out to seem like it was my fault he was uncomfortable. Finally, at the end of the visit, she ended up prescribing my kitten eye drops for his infected eye, and Amoxicillin for his little cold that he acquired from outside. Baby animals are not supposed to take amoxicillin unless it's an absolute emergency. This medication had made my kitten quite uncomfortable and unable to defecate for about 4 days. I called (very concerned) and she kept telling her nurses to tell me that I have nothing to worry about (She didn't talk to me herself after the initial visit). In the end I ended up seeing another vet. This vet obviously does not know how to handle animals, or their owners at that, in a professional manner. I recommend NOT bringing your pet to this place. Dr. Heller has treated our dogs for 20+ years and she's the one we rely on to keep our dogs healthy. We tried a vet who was closer when one of our guys came down sick but after weeks of antibiotics and no indication that Rudi was getting better, we took him to Dr. Heller who found a tumor in a tough-to-reach place near his armpit. She recommended a specialty surgeon to removed the malignant tumor and saved his life. Nine years later, Rudi is healthy and happy... my daughter's very best friend. We also board our dogs there when on vacation and they are very well taken care of. They enjoy their visits while we travel. We give Borderbrook and the staff 5 stars. Read Less
