I took my two cairn terriers Max and Zoe for their annual check-up. As usual, the desk staff were very polite and helpful. I only waited only a few moments before seeing the veterinary assistant and veterinarian. They walked me through the steps of the physicals, the vaccinations they needed and the tests they would do. It was expensive, but not compared to other veterinary offices. My husband and I have taken four other cairns to the Mt. Airy Veterinary Hospital over the last 25 years and two cats before that. They have helped us through many ups and downs with our pets, and put them to sleep when it was needed. They have recommended specialists when the needed care was beyond their scope. We have always appreciated their careful care and sensitive support to us and our pets. Today we were treated by Dr. Orr. In the past, we have mostly had our dogs treated by Dr. Lauderdale, but have had occasion to meet with most all of the other vets on staff. I only have the highest praise for this practice. The vet techs have also been very skilled, as well as kind and caring over the years. This winter one of my dogs was having difficulty and needed to undergo a series of tests. It was snowing and icy and my dog was not able to walk the distance to their office and our car was buried under snow. They came to pick us up and take us to the office and then returned us after the appointment. We will stay with this office and the staff as our experience over so many years makes clear that they strive to do their best for their customers and their pets. Read Less

Price gouge much? $60 just to walk in the door, $60 PER x-ray. After three x-rays plus the visit we were sent to the emergency room for an issue with our dog. We paid twice that amount for competent doctors that didn't scare us with their speculation, an overnight visit, IV, drugs, transport to another location, ultrasound and almost hourly follow ups. That was worth the price certainly. Mt. Airy Animal Hosptial? Not so much. Read Less

My boyfriend and I took our elderly dog here after witnessing some symptoms which seemed like they could be connected to old age. An x-ray later, we found out that she had cancer and would ultimately need to be put down. My boyfriend was reluctant to put her down because he had her for so long and had trouble letting go. The vet refused to refill her steroids which killed her in less than 1 day. Very uncompassionate. Before her death, I took our other (much younger) dog here for what seemed like arthritis issues. Vet basically chewed me out for her being overweight and said she couldn't even evaluate her ankles because she had "too much" fat around them. Months later and she now has a bald spot on her tail. Her coat has also become very coarse and dry. Following a quick google search, all of these symptoms point to hypothyroidism.  It could have been detected much sooner if she wasn't dismissed due to being overweight ( which would be caused by the hypothyroidism). Needless to say, I will be taking her all the way to New Jersey to validate my suspicions even though Mt. Airy Vet is 3 minutes away from my residence..... Read Less

I decided to try this vet after recently moving to Philly, because it has good reviews and it's close. I brought my gsd in for a nail trim and warned them ahead of time that she was going to be a drama queen. I got there, gave them my paper work to scan in to make my new file, and went in the back to get her nails done. They ended up saying she was too stressed out to clip her nails which I found very disappointing. That weekend, my dog hurt her leg, so I called to make another appointment. They couldn't find my file because they lost my paperwork. After giving them my information again, I set up my appointment for Saturday morning. They told me not to feed her after midnight in case she needed x-rays and had to be sedated. When I went to my appointment, they muzzled her and flipped her on her side and she was yowling the whole time in a crazy amount of stress. I understand that they need to take a look at her legs and back, but it was hard to watch, and I couldn't help but think that it could've been done differently. The vet tech looked at me weird when I said that she couldn't eat because she might need x-rays done. But she conceeded. When the vet came in, she gave me a weird look at told me that they don't even do x-rays on Saturdays!!!! That's something the whole staff should know!!!! Oh and the vet tech that tried to clip her nails a few days prior didn't even recognize us at all during our 2nd visit. So much for remembering patients. I'll be looking for a new vet. Read Less

This office is very clean and the staff was very nice. I had an emergency appointment for Saturday afternoon. I waited maybe 5 minutes before I was taken to the examination room. About 10 minutes later, the assistant came in to take my cat's vitals. And about 5 minutes later, the doctor came in. The doctor was super smart. I can't recall the doctor's name right now, but her last name starts with an L. I thought the price was reasonable, maybe I paid $75 for the office. But get this...I had to bring my cat back for a follow up, and they didn't charge me for the second visit! My second visit, I had the same experience. Everything was clean, I smelled bleach, and everyone was nice. This time I noticed a coffee machine and a water cooler, and a TV. I know this place received poor reviews in the past (like 3 or 4 years ago ), but they made serious changes since then. It's worth your time to at least check them out. Read Less

Dr. Manson was absolutely wonderful with our cat. He had been sick, and we were concerned about possible major health issues. She diagnosed him with a skin infection and gave him antibiotics and steroids. We were highly skeptical that a skin problem would make him vomit multiple times a day and act so unlike himself. We were proven wrong when, twelve hours after his visit, he was starting to act completely normally again. Three weeks later, no vomiting since the day he was seen and he is back to being him! We are so grateful for that, and we will absolutely be returning to see Dr. Manson! Read Less

I gave Mt Airy Veterinary Associates 4 stars because I believe the doctors and techs do GREAT work. Super caring, passionate, and considerate. I did NOT give a 5th star because of their front office staff (receptionist, etc). They are completely miserable to deal with. On every occasion I have been greeted with snarls and treated as though I was just an annoyance. Today was the final straw. I had to use a credit card over the phone because I had an emergency situation with my dog, which I understand can be messy. The way I was talked to was completely inappropriate. The two girls at the front spoke to me in such a condescending and rude way I will never go back. I am solely writing this review because as a business owner I would want to know if my employees were treating our customers that poorly. Read Less

By the time our visit was over and we made back in the house my cat looked like he was relieved of pain and was able to relax. He ate and drank soon as he seen his bowl & used his litter (prior to the visit he would not eat, drink, or use his litter box). He slept well throughout the night. Ace woke up this morning happy, playful, exhibiting no pain, and is eating and drinking regularly. I did not think my cat would make it. I will never recommend this place to no one. The technician named Jessica told me over the phone I shouldn't have let my dogs breed if I couldn't pay for an emergency. If I can't afford to take care of dogs why have them. Then she go on to say I'm more concerned about your dogs safety but if I can't pay for her C-Section then I may very well lose my dog. But the only way they can help me is if I pay up front because they don't have time for people getting the work done then not paying. But I told her I didn't have the money at that moment but Im willing to pay. But who told her I didn't have the money? I just told her I called other pet emergency location and they all require insurance I never said I never had money so she assumed probably because I'm black. Horrible. For the life of me I can't figure out how this place is even in business. It truly is terrible.  We went there for a few years despite being gouged on every service that was provided to our dog. We had to plan ahead because we knew a trip to the vet for a routine exam would cost the equivalent of a car payment (ok, way more actually).  All of the staff, including the vets and techs, were just ok-rushed, indifferent but not quite rude. As long as our dog was taken care of, we could deal with that.  The final straw was being made to wait an hour + after our scheduled appointment time on several occasions. Read Less

Just took my cat there yesterday and my experience was absolutely terrible.  I've had multiple animals go to this vet and the experiences have been hit or miss.  The first thing Dr. Lauderdale said when she came in to view my cat was to curtly ask if I had proof indicating that the animal had been vaccinated against rabies.  Our animals are all fully vaccinated and we have records proving such.  I told the doctor that and was "scolded" in a harsh tone for not having the records immediately present with me.  I was also told that "if I can't provide them, animal control will be called and your cat will be taken".I understand the law, and I understand why people would be so concerned about rabid animals but it was like Dr. Lauderdale was ITCHING to call someone up to report a rabid cat.  I *literally* felt and saw her anxiousness, which made me (a normally very calm person) immediately anxious.  It took me less than 5 minutes to call the clinic and then another anxious 10-15 minutes waiting for them to fax over the paperwork.  After securing the paperwork proving that he was vaccinated and being made to feel extremely uncomfortable I should have left.  I was getting really bad vibes but didn't want my cat to have to stay at home for the day waiting for a vet appointment.  After providing a huge estimate I was told verbally that the deposit would be half that amount but noticed on the form that the line item for "Deposit" was noted as $0.00.  At the front desk, when I tried to gain some clarification about this one of the receptionists literally looked at me with a blank stare for around 3-5 seconds.  It took another 5 minutes of the vet tech coming out and "explaining" the deposit to me multiple times before they finally printed me a receipt and estimate report, which is all I wanted.I later received a call that my cat did not require any draining and didn't have an abscess.  The vet told me the bill would be "much lower" but it ended up being nearly $500 which I feel is overpriced.  Especially so since I was literally worried the entire time.  For what it's worth, I have had good experiences here as well.  In particular, one Dr and one receptionist have been consistently great.  Recently however this practice is overcharging by a huge margin and more importantly their customer service is extremely poor.  I highly recommend against taking your pet here.  I never will again. Our previous vet, unfortunately lost their lease and no longer has a facility in which to see patients,My dog Cassius was needed immediate attention. He'd developed a wound on his belly over night. To say I was frantic is an understatement. I called bright and early and the office staff was very friendly and understanding. I was given an early afternoon appt. Upon arrive, of course Cassius was very nervous. the vet tech was very gentle with him and she spoke gently to him to try an calm his stress. I must apologize because although she told me her name, I was so stressed myself that I forgot it. My apology to her if she's reading this review..Then in comes Dr Mooney. What impressed me right off the bat was that without hesitation, she joined me on the floor with my pet. I'd previously sat down on the floor to make him more comfortable. She listened intently to his history and why we were there. She then very gently went about her business of giving him a thorough exam. She gave me the same instructions on what to do with his wound as my previous vet (I'd emailed them a pic on Sunday eve and was told to clean it and use some neosporin on it for a few days). And although I absolutely LOVE our vet, my Silky Yorkie is a SR dog and he needs someplace to go when there's an immediate need. Their late hours and sometimes same-day appointments is so convenient if you're a 9-to-5er. Lots of parking. Their boarding is very affordable. Our dog has had 2 surgeries there, and we wouldn't take him anywhere else. They're affiliated with Andorra Vet Clinic, so if you need an appointment on short notice, you can also go there. I love the Andorra office of Mt. Airy Animal Hospital. The doctors there have been amazing to my pets, one dog and three cats, and their service prompt and personable. It is also conveniently located for me, Chestnut Hill resident. Easier to get to with less traffic than driving down G'twn Ave through Mt Airy. The staff at Mt. Airy Animal Hospital are wonderful. They were always there with a smile when I took in Lewis. Lewis had CH and a number of other disorders and was very special needs. After his passing I really didn't want another animal but this past summer two kittens, Peach and Bean decided that we were the right place for them to grow up and hopefully grow old. This brother and sister pair have enlightened our new home and They will see the staff at Mt. Airy Animal Hospital to keep them healthy and happy. They have already decided the the Docs there aren't too bad... for humans. Read Less

I wish I could give ZERO stars.  If you have a cat stay away from these people, especially that Dr. Lauderdale!  In the "meet the staff" section of their website it is obvious that they favor dogs.  They're all holding dogs.  My cat was having trouble breathing and I rushed him to this place.  He stopped breathing in my arms seconds before I ran him in their door.  The technician took him in the back and within seconds Dr. Lauderdale came out from the room and casually said "he is gone".  I was giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while my husband was feverishly driving and his tooth nicked my lip drawing blood.  My cat is an inside cat, never been outside unless he was in his carrier.  These people took my cat from me citing he had to be tested for rabies because he bit me!  What was an already horrific situation was made 100 times worst by that callus B@#!!   Cat owners stay away from this place.  Go where the staff is compassionate cat lovers.  Chestnut Hill Cat Clinic is your best bet. I wish I could rate this place zero stars. As soon as I entered, I was smacked in the face with the smell of uncleanliness, the pores of the walls and floors embedded with the stink of animal fur and secretions. This is like walking into a retirement home and it smelling like urine and unwashed feet, buttocks, and bellies. My docile cat had, what I thought, was an abscess under his chin. I had explained the concern about my cat, in detail, to the receptionist. Then I did it in the stinky examination room with the vet technician - for the second time, in detail. He weighed my cat and took his temperature. Then the doctor (Wilkerson) came in and proceeded to ask me questions that demonstrated he had not communicated (or, perhaps, simply listened?) AT ALL with the tech. For the THIRD time, IN DETAIL, I explained the problem with my cat. He looked at my cat and said it looked like some kind of skin condition. "Is that all?" I queried worryingly. "It's not an abscess?" The doctor roughly squeezed my cat's chin, who whimpered. The doctor said that maybe there was a pocket of pus (MAYBE?!?!?), and maybe they would explore with the cat knocked out. He walked out of the room and sent the unfriendly tech back in with papers for me to sign stating that I agreed to anesthesia for the cat. I asked the tech for what reason I they were using anesthesia - nothing had been explained to me! The tech looked at me blankly and said they were going to do surgery to probe my cat's chin. At this point, I followed my instinct, and told the tech that we were going to leave and go elsewhere. The tech said "Okay."  I told the people at the receptionist's desk what a poor experience it was and that nothing had been explained to me, to which they responded the vet was the only one on duty that day.  Please do not subject your animals to the unkindness of the employees and smelly facilities of the Mt Airy Animal Hospital.  I took my cat to a much better place and the situation was remedied quickly and kindly. I am officially done with this Vet. We have taken our dog here for vet care and boarding for the past 4 years and things have gotten progressivley worse and worse.  3 years ago, my dog was very sick and the response to my panicked call was that they don't have any appointments available and just to wait until the next afternoon.  When i asked for a recommendation to an emergency vet, I was told that they only reccommend one animal hospital an hour from Philly.2 years ago, I picked her up from 4 days of boarding and went straight home with her.  Before I could even get her out of the car, I realized that she had caked in feces on her hind quarters.  It was obvious that it had been on her for a while but I tried to be understanding when I called to office to complain about returning to a filthy dog.  The person who answered the phone that time was incredibly rude. Her original response to the question of why I got my dog back with feces on her was that we didn't pay extra for her to be bathed so it's not their fault that she's dirty!!  Eventually I spoke with the office manager and he was very apologetic and offered us a free bath the next time we boarded her so I decided to give them a second chance.Today, my husband went to pick our dog up at 2:30pm and arrived to see a sign on the door that the office had closed at 1pm because it's NYE! When we made the boarding reservation with today as the scheduled pick up date nobody told us that they would be closing early for NYE, when my husband dropped her off 10 days ago no one mentioned them closing early and there were no signs up about it, and no one called either of us to let us know that they would be gone at 1.  Additionally, the phone message doesn't say anything about holiday hours and closures.  My husband has knocked on the doors and yelled over the fence but no one has even bothered to answer him to say they can't open the door despite him hearing them outside with the dogs.I've called other boarding facilities in the area and NONE of them are closing early for NYE. To me, that is an example of why this place is so bad. They don't  really care about the animals that they are supposed to be taking care of and just want to go about their day I am done with them and will not be returning with my dog for any reason ever. Worst animal hospital ever. I come from a family of veterinarians, but they live a few hours away and I was forced to find a regular vet when we adopted our rescue pup. The first mistake they made was giving her a vaccine she already was given at the shelter, even though they had the paperwork showing she already got it.They also couldn't tell us whether or not the dog was spayed (she was a year and 8 months when we brought her in). I mean, that's pretty basic stuff. My husband and I couldn't see a scar, and when we went to visit my parents they couldn't see one either. So we took her to the Ardmore Animal Hospital to find out whether she was fixed or not, and they said she wasn't (with certainty)...but they quoted us $600 to do the procedure. So off to the SPCA we went to have her fixed for $80.A few months later when our dog got a hold of a jar of lotion and got sick because of it (black labs, they'll eat whatever they can get) we took her to Mt. Airy because it was cheaper and closer to us than Ardmore was. We're waiting in the exam room when the doctor comes in and starts talking about parasites, and we're like...uh, no, we're here because she ate a bottle of lotion and we want to make sure she's OK. Apparently our dog had worms for months and no one felt inclined to notify us of this once her test results came back after her first visit. From there it was just...downhill. Arguing with the doctor about what the next step would be, why we weren't notified, etc. We were fed so much B.S. that day it was ridiculous. I'll never ever go back to Mt. Airy. They're terrible.

I chose this hospital after a lengthy search online. The bios from each and every vet was impressive. Maybe it;s because I'm a PENN grad myself, but I was drawn there. Until Dr Rapp finds another location, I believe we just may have found a replacement home at the Mt Airy Animal Hospital with Dr Mooney. Thank you Rose Read Less

We took our dog there, and have been very pleased with the consistently excellent care that he receives, as well as the warmth and professionalism of every member of the staff. I trust them. I'm guessing that the negative comments on the cleanliness of the clinic were from long ago, and they've since addressed that.  We've been visiting both locations for almost a year, and the waiting room and exam rooms are always very clean, and have no odors. I write this review to counteract the many unfavorable reviews. We have been coming to Mt. Airy for over 10 years and have always been happy. Yes, while we feel we do pay more here for services than we would at some other vets, we feel we have always received compassionate and quality care. We especially like Dr. Lauderdale who has taken care of all 6 of our pets. Wait times are sometimes longer than expected, but this is not the norm (at least in my experience).
