The worst vet experience ever. Miserable, rude, unpleasant, unprofessional women work the front office. They lack the empathy required in a medical setting. DISGUSTED. I spent over $500 having test run in February. Have never gotten a conclusive diagnosis or effective treatment. I just called there to ask to speak to a vet only to be screamed at by 2 different women in the front office who clearly cannot handle the stress of being employed there. My cat is still sick with 0 answers. In fact my last visit there they couldn't even find my cat's chart!! they had to make a new one! So where are all my of cat's medical records then? Then these 2 shrewds have the audacity to sit on the phone with me this morning and argue about when the last time I was there which was in April but because they don't have all their records straight they aren't accountable!! And also the 2nd woman that I spoke to that works in the front office told me I can go somewhere else!? How is that being an ethical medical staff member? I also waited a month to call them because when I was there in April I witnessed her cussing out another customer and then talking badly about them after the phone call. Smfh What kind of vet gives you anxiety about calling and asking for help for your animal when you're paying them??? I would rather go back to VCA and pay astronomical prices for better professional treatment and at least get the answers that we were looking for in the first place!. We have had many dogs over the years and so have our friends . We have been extremely happy for at least 20 years. We've seen at least 3 different veterinarians at this convenient animal hospital and have never been disappointed. I don't know how they keep things running so smoothly in an environment that can tend to get a little hairy at times ( pun intended ) LOL Love the strip district area they are in and find it incredible that provide free parking for their visitors !!!! After adopting my first pets, two cats from a shelter, one became ill and I needed a vet. This place was the closest and seemed to have good reviews along with a recommendation from friends. I was told I may have to decide to put my cat to sleep because it appeared she had feline leukemia.. with her health deteriorating rapidly, I decided to do what was best, take their advice and put her to sleep. While still in the room with my cat and still grieving, the receptionist came in and coldly and abruptly told me the price I was owed. I was caught off guard and felt the behavior was awful and inappropriate. I understand it's a business at the end of the day but at least take a a minute to offer condolences and be human. Do not trust these people with your pet. I took my dog here last year to have a minor surgery- to have a growth on his eyelid removed. I paid extra money to have additional blood work performed prior to the surgery to make sure that he had no pre-existing conditions that would make him unable to handle the anesthesia. However instead of performing the blood tests prior to administering the anesthesia, they instead started to put him under and realized that he was not doing well. They then called me to come pick him up and said that they suspected that he may have kidney issues. They tech told me to be careful with him because he may be a bit out of it due to the anesthesia. He couldn't walk straight and literally slept for days. I called them to inquire about what to do as he did not seem to be bouncing back and they then denied ever giving him any anesthesia at all. I then took him to the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center who were absolutely amazing! They informed that the anesthesia that was in fact given to my dog had worsened the kidney disease that my dog had. He stayed at the Hospital for about a week, but after trying everything, and giving him fluids at home, he ended up passing away about 2 weeks after his visit at the Penn Animal Hospital. Had they actually ran the blood tests prior to administering the anesthesia, my dog might be here today. They not only acted unethically and negligently but after everything, and the passing of my dog, they refused to take any responsibility for their actions. I would NEVER trust these people again. Do not make the mistake I made, they may be less expensive than other places- but they cannot be trusted and do not have your pet's best interests at heart. Read Less

Would NEVER go anywhere else.  Doesn't matter which doctor you request,  or just happen to get, they are all terrific.  Been going there for many, many years.  You are not charged an arm & a leg!  Well maintained hospital, clean and friendly. Ample parking is right there. My dogs are not only family pets but are trial dogs. Their health & well-being are extremely important to me. I read a number of the reviews on this site. Pros: location, ease of appointments, hours, cost. Cons: dirty facility, quick almost rushed visits, fairly poor customer service, everything hand written on oversized index cards and papers to take with you, and cost. I wanted something closer. Loved the Greenfield animal hospital (Dr. Winnie is the BEST). I started taking my cats here. After picking up my kitten from surgery, I will not go back. The customer service this evening was abysmal and it was only their attitude. If there is an issue, staff should try and resolve it or at least speak with a vet. Again, this may be why appts are so easy to get. A vet did walk up to the front counter to get something but rather than ask what the matter was, he quickly left. If you want efficiency, a good location to downtown, fairly reasonable prices on some things (do pay attention for the nickel and diming approach) and don’t mind feeling rushed...this is your place. If you would rather spend about the same or a little more for quality service, then please go elsewhere. I actually self weighed my kitten during my office visit. The vet was done with shots, talked to me about FIV and was about to end our 5 minute visit when I turned around and placed my kitten in the scale. So I could know how much he weighed... The Doctor and the technician were really gentle with my cat and alleviated any worries with his awesome bedside manner. The cost was really reasonable! They just won themselves a new customer. Had a very lethargic 12 yr old buddy who was experiencing symptoms that i thought was his end. Turns out he has lyme disease. Super thorough and friendly staff diagnosed and treated him (and me) with respect and honest diagnosis. I've brought my two cats and dog here multiple times and would highly recommend them! They are located in the heart of the Strip District, but don't let that scare you away-- they have plenty of parking!The staff and the vets are always very friendly and compassionate toward the animals. I've always been able to schedule an evening appointment within a day or two of calling in. If you can't make an evening appointment, you can go for walk-in hours from 10am-1:30pm. Walk-in hours have been a little busy, but it's a great option if you can't make an evening appointment or can't wait to have your pet seen. They get everyone in and out pretty quickly.Besides all of the routine stuff, I've had my one cat treated for roundworm and my other cat in for urinary and weight issues. I once had to have a blood test done and they called with the results right when they said they would. I also get my meds and prescription food for my cat here.Also, we have struggled with my dog having aggression toward other dogs and they have always been willing to accommodate us by letting us wait outside or offering to put us in a room while we wait. I arrived around 1030am on 7/17/17 with our beloved family pet- our cat Sable. Sable was 21 years old and a wonderful companion to my son with multiple disabilities. So getting efficient, good care to help her cross over, was very important to me. I didn't want Sable to endure any added stress with barking dogs or a long wait. The front desk staff must have read my mind-I was in and out of there in 15 minutes. But more importantly, Sable went as peacefully as possible. The short time i was there, the staff and doc were all very kind and quick - exactly what we needed. We said our goodbyes at home- there was no reason to drag it out at a long appt. I actually found Penn Animal Hospital based off reviews I read on Yelp - and I'm happy to say that everyone is right!First of all, I love that they are conveniently located in the Strip District. I live within the city and didn't want to have to drive out to a suburb. The free parking is a great perk as well.The vets and vet techs are all so nice. Everyone is very laid-back and accommodating. They have walk-in hours every day during the week and also take appointments at night. Whenever I've had to make an appointment, I've never had to wait more than a day or two. And the vets are very knowledgeable, always spend a lot of time with you, and have a very calming presence - which is often needed when visiting the vet with unknown issues!I love that they don't try to push unnecessary tests or procedures. They even give great tips, like telling me to fill a prescription at the regular pharmacy instead of the vet because it will save money. And their prices are great! I went today to take my dog in, who was having eye issues as well as digestive issues. They spent an hour with me, gave me two medicines, and I got out for $115. Can't beat that. I don't think a visit has ever cost me over $150 - even with vaccines.I love, love, love this place. I recommend them to everyone I know! Read Less

I really cant express how great they are. They REALLY care and put me at ease. Their prices are much lower than anyone else around when it comes to procedures. I love it here because this place works so well with my schedule. Also, it's quick and efficient which is absolutely perfect. We have two dogs. One is a social butterfly and could probably hang out all day at the vet if she could. The other is a bit more timid, and definitely not a huge fan of going to the vet (he of course is our 100 lb dog). The bigger dog started having seizures a few years ago, and aside from taking good care of him, they also assured me that I was doing everything I could. I really needed that and I'm so grateful. If I could give this place -5 stars I would. Not only is this establishment unsanitary, but the vet that rushed me into this little side room off the waiting area didn't even introduce himself, and he started sticking my cat with shots, without telling me what they even were. It was her first time at a vet so clearly she was anxious and he just held her head and back down to the table and didn't even think about how he was hurting her. She was yelping and so afraid and I wanted to take his hand off of the back of her head, and smack him with it. What an arrogant prick. He handed me some bag of "deworming medication" before he rushed me out, didn't tell me what it was though, and didn't tell me how to give it to her. Went here for a check up with my two french bulldogs for their annuals and heartworm test. The doctor was very nice. Once of my dogs had an ear infection and he gave us the medicine and showed us how to use it. All of my dogs and cats have been going there close to 20 years and they have always been great with them. All of the vets are knowledgeable and care about your pet. Every vet tech has been compassionate and personable. Even the office staff is polite and prompt. Prices are very reasonable. They have their own parking lot so location is not a factor. Years ago, there was a Veterinarian here who recommended that every cat he saw should be euthanized.. I have 4 neighbors who this happened to, as well as myself and 2 family members. He told people that their cats had feline aids or feline leukemia and then they would bring the cats elsewhere for testing and the cats were fine. This happened to me, personally. One time I brought a cat in and he said the cat was "tested positive for feline aids and needed euthanized." I took the cat to another vet in Pt. Breeze and the cat was tested and was negative. The cat was treated for a respiratory infection without issue and sent home with me. This Dr. was Dr. Staub. He was a young Doctor. I was young at the time and always regretted never doing anything to turn this doctor into authorities. There was no internet at the time. But, if this doctor is still around, I do not recommend bringing your pet there. I would not bring a spider there. Read Less

Extremely poor service. I called at 10.30 about walk-ins for a vaccination for my Chihuahua. I was asked to come in an hour. When I arrived, I was rudely notified that they don't do walk-ins on a Saturday. The only other person at the front desk could "not remember a thing". Very unprofessional. Overdue review. We rarely take our dog to the vets because we have never found one that is compassionate like to one service we had many years, and pets, ago. Our dog was extremely hyped yo when entering the facilities based on our last visit to another vet. After only a couple of minutes the calm spirit of the waiting room and the other dogs got her into a good place. First time ever. The staff was EXTREMELY friendly, helpful and worked amazingly well with our dog. We were in and out in no time with no extra test or unnecessary charges.I would highly recommend this place for any pet issues. Read Less

I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience at Penn Animal Hospital. My dog was in need of urgent care on a Saturday (talk about a bad time to try and get a Vet appointment in the city). Our regular vet wasn't able to take us so they recommended that we call here. I called at 9:30am and they were able to see us for an appointment at 10:30am. We arrived a little bit early and were seen within 5 minutes of our scheduled appointment. The Vet and vet tech were very respectful and kind to my very neurotic senior dog. They were very realistic about care needed for an older dog - no needless stressful procedures. As a pet owner you can't asked more than that. Pros: -excellent kind staff -price ($128 here, where I've paid over $400 at other facilities) -highly accommodating Needless to say, my wife and I were so thankful. I have used Penn Animal Hospital for many years for both cat & dogs. I like every doctor & intern here. They have ALWAYS treated my pets the way our pediatrician treated our children. These doctors & assistants take their time, they listen to your concerns, they address every one of them. They are authentically kind and loving toward your pet. They help you make decisions, when decisions are tough. They are sensitive to your feelings and the way your pet is feeling. My most recent positive experience was getting my dog's teeth cleaned. I was so apprehensive, but there was no need to be. This place is so professional, these doctors are phenomenal. They are not careless. Preliminary blood work showed that my dog's liver enzymes were slightly elevated. Dr. Battle held off on the teeth cleaning, treated her with an antibiotic for 7 days and had me come back in 10 days. We rechecked her blood, her liver enzymes returned to normal and we were good to go. She had her teeth cleaned yesterday and today she is completely back to her happy-go-lucky self, minus the bad breath! Her teeth are so white she should be in a toothpaste commercial! *GET THE PRELIMINARY BLOOD WORK before anesthesia, it's worth every penny. Read Less

Ok yes I almost never give a business 5 stars. But this one deserves it. My pup has been going to this hospital ever since I got him, at 3 months old. He's now 9 yrs old. I refuse, even though I travel so much, for any other vet to give him his vaccinations or wellness checkups. I will make a special trip back to Pittsburgh for my pup.So anyway,  yesterday we had a slight emergency. I saw my pup limping and his paw looked like it was in pain. I immediately went to Penn Animal Hospital.  We maybe waited 10 minutes and were seen. The dr...look I know this might not mean much to most folks...but he wasn't afraid. My dog is huge...but he's a teddy bear. He loves people wayyy more than other animals. So instead of acting like 9, he acts like he's 2. Super happy all the time. The dr. was patient and listened to all my concerns. Overall a very good experience. I have to disagree with one of the yelpers. While they do not have electronic records (still paper and pen) they do annotate everything.  I do keep my own records as well...but there was a time that I needed to board my dog and I couldn't find my paperwork. I called Penn Animal and they faxed the documentation to me at work. So yes they do have a fax machine. I do worry about if there is a fire or flood...the records would be lost.
