My daughter and I just got home from having to take my cat, Newman to the hospital, Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center, for a possible urinary blockage. Anyone with cats knows that a complete blockage can be life threatening, so I didn't want to wait till in the morning. They took him back fairly quickly, as it was a potential emergency. The tech did a brief assessment, vital signs, etc. and then took him to the back to have the vet check his bladder to see if he was obstructed. She brought him back out with the good news that he was NOT obstructed! She gave us the option of seeing the vet for whatever was bothering him (he probably does have an infection), but we would have to go back to the waiting room and there would probably be a significant wait, as he was no longer considered an emergency.
Once I knew that he was not obstructed, I felt comfortable bringing him home, and we will follow up with his regular vet in the morning. So far, so good. Right?
We came out of the room. We stopped at the front desk to check out. I told the girl that I was there to check out for Newman. She told me that she didn't have the paperwork, yet, and to have a seat and she would call us as soon as she got it.
So, we found a seat. And we waited. And waited. And waited.
Now, in the meantime, due to whatever bladder issues he has going on, Newman is petrified. He had peed in the carrier. And it smelled horrible. We knew it was obvious, but there was really nothing we could do about it, and the reality is, that is why we were there. But, as we were sitting there waiting, the lady sitting next to me was making snide comments about the horrible smell......
After sitting there waiting for OVER AN HOUR, I walked back up to the front desk and asked the same girl if she had gotten the paperwork for Newman, yet, and she said, no. I asked her if she knew how much longer it was going to be. At this point, she looked at the computer and got a bit of a bewildered look on her face and asked me, "Did you see the vet?" I told her, no, we hadn't. She said, "Well, let me call back and find out what is going on. Have a seat." So, we went back and sat down.
A couple minutes later, another girl came over (the girl that had checked us in). She said, "You didn't see the vet, right? You are going to take him to your regular vet?" I said yes. She said, "Then there is no reason for you to have waited, there is no charge, you could have just left."
AFTER WE SAT THERE FOR OVER AN HOUR WITH A SICK, SCARED, WET, SMELLY CAT!
Why would we have expected the tech to have taken his vitals, done the assessment, taken him in the back to have his bladder checked and NOT charged me ANYTHING, at all?? If I had thought for a minute that there was no charge, I wouldn't have even stopped at the front desk. Obviously, the girl at the desk had no clue what was going on, and had I not went back up, we would probably STILL be sitting there stinking up the entire waiting room.
So, after all of this, we had to bring Newman home and try to wash him off, as best we could, to get the urine off of him. Now, he is wet, and still not feeling well, and really pissed off at the world. Read Less
