My dog was brought to their facility Saturday they had a lot of emergencies my dog was vomiting blood keep that in mind by the time that she was seen three hours later because they didn’t see her as an emergency really maybe the person that saw her brushed her off as if nothing was wrong saying she threw up a lot and she probably irritated no idea her stomach or something . It was not even going to do x-rays acted like nothing was wrong My husband told her if you or one of your family members was vomiting blood you want answers you want at least an x-ray she told him it will be three hours for us to even do something like that. I honestly think you should take her home and monitor her see how she does. I took my dog hours away to another vet where she was rushed into emergency surgery to save her life. These people could’ve cared if my dog lived or died they are sickening and they have the nerve to defend themselves and say how much they care they’re full of crap , they shouldn’t be left alone with a goldfish shame on them and I don’t want to hear their excuses. They can save it for someone who cares because I do not just like they did not care if my dog lived or died. I’m just glad I found a vet to do the right thing it sure as hell wasn’t them. Read Less

I recently had to drive an hour one way to get there because I thought my dachshund broke her leg. I was told I couldn’t be seen because it’s not a life or death emergency. And there was only 5 cars in the lot. So your telling me if my dog isn’t dying you can’t see them? What happened to this place? It has totally gone down hill. Read Less

If you love your pet DO NOT TAKE THEM TO PVSEC!!! Drive 2, 4, 7 hours to another Emergency Pet Hospital anywhere else, just not here!

I brought my healthy 14 yr old dog to PVSEC Camp Horn Road, Pittsburgh ER @ 7::30AM because she threw up 4 times was panting and shaking in discomfort. Because of COVID, I wasn't allowed in the building, you call from the parking lot. A tech came out around 8:15 to get my dog and have me sign treatment and CPR forms. About an hour later a tech tells me the vet wants to do a blood panel & ultrasound and needed an upfront payment of $800. I put it on a credit card & waited. FOUR HOURS LATER I'm still in the parking lot so I call to ask about my dog, but was told the tech attending to her wasn't available so they'd call back.
Finally I get a call from the Vet herself who told me she has gastroenteritis, her ultrasound showed nodules on her liver but nothing abnormal otherwise. Her  bloodwork showed she has elevated liver values & Vet wants to hospitalize her and do an endoscope. I asked if they started an IV or fluids & they said no. SO, they took my dog, threw her in a crate for five hours, drew blood & did an ultrasound. What exactly would hospitalization accomplish? I can keep her in a crate and watch at home. So, I ask for her paperwork & instructions, if I can address her liver issues with supplements & they release her.
24 hours later my dog collapses, I call and tell them "pull my dog's file, I'm bringing her in, she needs hospitalization immediately". I get to the parking lot, call and wait at least 45 minutes before a tech comes out. Almost THREE HOURS LATER a different Vet calls, tells me my dog "looks terrible" & she wants another blood draw & X-rays. I AM freaking at this point. You've had her for hours! What part of 'do whatever you have to to save my dog' don't you understand???!!!!
Finally, I get another call. Her liver enzymes tripled from previous day, her lungs are ok, but she's starting to shut down. Was told (paraphrase) 'in this situation we have to go all in or not at all. $4000-$6000 at minimum and it still may not be a good outcome. Even if she survives, she could have brain damage.' I asked "is she awake?", make her comfortable, I'll be there to put her down.
I called a couple days later to speak to the medical director, but instead a "manager" called me back to say, the vet "suggested hospitalization", you chose to take her home. Hospitalization for an upset stomach? AT NO TIME EVER DID THE ER VET TELL ME MY DOG'S LIVER VALUES WERE LIFE THREATENING. They will never admit to a mistake, but I have to; I trusted these people with my heart dog & they were not clear or truthful. I decided to put my beautiful, smart, loving soulmate to sleep because they gave me no hope. I will regret it the rest of my life. Read Less

Long story short. Called back and charged multiple times because they couldn't get the diagnosis correct. I live far away so it's not easy to make unnecessary trips. Had my puppy overnight for surgery which was another misdiagnosis. Told me to come get her and they were going to charge me $500+ even though they made the mistake. I told them I didn't feel I should pay that particular bill since this had happened multiple times. The director daid he wouldn't charge me for the ladt visit, however I wasn't welcomed back. Totally in shock. I think maybe after they made so many mistakes we then became a liability. Who wants to deal with a patient you can't figure out the treatment plan. Read Less

Brought my dog here Saturday, June 30 around 8 pm after he started vomiting blood. It was fairly busy, but we were seen in triage pretty quickly. We waited probably about an hour and a half before seeing a doctor and for tests to start. After another 90 minutes or so the Dr finally came back out to go over what they had found. Thinking my dog could possibly have parasites, I asked about them, but the Dr dismissed that as a possibility. She informed us she wanted to hospitalize our dog, which would cost $1.8-2.8k. Not being able to afford that, we declined. We then waited probably another hour before he was brought out to us. Today, July 2, our dog still wasn’t doing better, so we took him to a vet closer to our hometown. Almost immediately, he was tested and found to be positive for whipworms. So, after making us wait 5 hours, this vet charged us nearly $700 to give us non-conclusive results, while another quickly found and treated the issues at almost half the cost. Unless your pet is truly in a life or death situation, be wary. Read Less

I brought my dog here for an evaluation due to increased shortness of breath and excessive panting while at rest. I was brought into a room quickly for vitals to be taken and staff were all very polite and knowledge. I was sent back to the waiting room where I sat for 2 HOURS before my dog was seen by a vet. They ordered a chest X-ray and some labs which took an additional 2 HOURS for them to complete. I was there from 9 pm - 2 am on a Friday. I saw a total of 4 animals besides my own in the waiting room that evening. I would not recommend bringing your animals to this facility unless you have a true emergency. Caring towards our cat but moved forward with procedures without discussing cost or giving any updates. I sat in the waiting area for 2 hours when I went to the counter to see what was going on . Reception said they would find out. A short while later I was called up and told that the vet was in the middle of removing kidney stones. The minimum cost was $2500 and they were already doing the procedure. I had no notification that they were going to start this. Last I was told was when we initially saw the vet was that they were going to try to get a Cather in to drain the bladder and then see what options were needed. Update: . I just spoke with the hospital. The only "procedure" that was performed was a catheter was inserted to drain his bladder! That was what cost $2500. Read Less

Yes, they have specialized vets. BUT... The techs are obviously coached to insincerely fawn over every animal that comes in; its disturbing - very fake and annoying. And they use your pet as a pin cushion to do unnecessary tests to hold your beloved pet hostage while they charge you a minimum of $2500 just to start. (And when my bill ended up being less than that, they said they couldn't refund my money for at least 4 weeks. But they stole it within seconds!) Thieves. They lied, saying they needed to keep my sick dog over night for a test and wouldn't let me stay to wait for her. The test was done within an hour before I got home. Then they called me. I could have waited and taken her home had they not lied... Just so they could charge me $500 to keep her overnight. It's a money racquet. They only care about the money and you're pet is the tool they use to rob your bank account. They made my dog suffer through unnecessary tests and stressed her.. So they could bill me as much as possible. It's SICKENING!!!! The dog's well being should be priority! She was not their lab rat! I'm very angry at the way they abused my dog and me. And I'm not the only one to experience this. Ask around.... You'll hear similar stories. Read Less

I was referred to this establishment from my vet due to my pets cancer. I guess my expectations were too high because it seems to me all they care about is the money. I haven’t been treated very nicely by a couple people at this establishment. There are actually only a few compassionate people that work at this organization so if compassion is one of the traits that you’re seeking, in my opinion, I would not go here . Their “policies” for my circumstance are disgraceful and it’s really sad how pet owners are treated. They may have some good talent but the uncaring nature from several employees really deters it from being a good place to go. It is my hope they take this constructive criticism and start changing the way the treat pet owners. It is a very sad day for my pet Read Less

My daughter and I just got home from having to take my cat, Newman to the hospital, Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center, for a possible urinary blockage. Anyone with cats knows that a complete blockage can be life threatening, so I didn't want to wait till in the morning. They took him back fairly quickly, as it was a potential emergency. The tech did a brief assessment, vital signs, etc. and then took him to the back to have the vet check his bladder to see if he was obstructed. She brought him back out with the good news that he was NOT obstructed! She gave us the option of seeing the vet for whatever was bothering him (he probably does have an infection), but we would have to go back to the waiting room and there would probably be a significant wait, as he was no longer considered an emergency. Once I knew that he was not obstructed, I felt comfortable bringing him home, and we will follow up with his regular vet in the morning. So far, so good. Right? We came out of the room. We stopped at the front desk to check out. I told the girl that I was there to check out for Newman. She told me that she didn't have the paperwork, yet, and to have a seat and she would call us as soon as she got it. So, we found a seat. And we waited. And waited. And waited. Now, in the meantime, due to whatever bladder issues he has going on, Newman is petrified. He had peed in the carrier. And it smelled horrible. We knew it was obvious, but there was really nothing we could do about it, and the reality is, that is why we were there. But, as we were sitting there waiting, the lady sitting next to me was making snide comments about the horrible smell...... After sitting there waiting for OVER AN HOUR, I walked back up to the front desk and asked the same girl if she had gotten the paperwork for Newman, yet, and she said, no. I asked her if she knew how much longer it was going to be. At this point, she looked at the computer and got a bit of a bewildered look on her face and asked me, "Did you see the vet?" I told her, no, we hadn't. She said, "Well, let me call back and find out what is going on. Have a seat." So, we went back and sat down. A couple minutes later, another girl came over (the girl that had checked us in). She said, "You didn't see the vet, right? You are going to take him to your regular vet?" I said yes. She said, "Then there is no reason for you to have waited, there is no charge, you could have just left." AFTER WE SAT THERE FOR OVER AN HOUR WITH A SICK, SCARED, WET, SMELLY CAT! Why would we have expected the tech to have taken his vitals, done the assessment, taken him in the back to have his bladder checked and NOT charged me ANYTHING, at all?? If I had thought for a minute that there was no charge, I wouldn't have even stopped at the front desk. Obviously, the girl at the desk had no clue what was going on, and had I not went back up, we would probably STILL be sitting there stinking up the entire waiting room. So, after all of this, we had to bring Newman home and try to wash him off, as best we could, to get the urine off of him. Now, he is wet, and still not feeling well, and really pissed off at the world. Read Less

This place may be great, if you're rich. Unfortunately, I can't even afford to get in the door. I called for an estimate, and at first was told that wasn't even possible over the phone, and that I'd have to spend the $150 to bring my kitty in to find out if I could afford to treat her. Thankfully, I did eventually talk to someone who told me that it would be between $500-$1000 to repeat one of the tests I had already had done at my primary veterinary office, and an extra $500-$1000 because it would be considered emergency since I couldn't wait 2 weeks to have my kitty who isn't eating seen. And the only financing option is Care Credit, which I did apply for, but only have a $1500 credit line, which might cover diagnostics, but then I wouldn't have anything left for treatment. And when I told the girl on the phone this, and that it sucks that people have to let their pets die because they can't afford to treat them, her only response was "yeah", not even an "I'm sorry". Maybe your facility should spend a fraction of the time it spends on trying to make money, instead on trying to help animals whose owners don't have a ton of money. We belong to the YMCA because they recruit donations from those who can afford it, to have a program for those of us who can't afford to pay full price for a membership. People donate to the Humane Society, ASPCA, etc, I'm sure some would donate to this good cause as well. I hope that this could help to be a solution for those of us who feel like we have to let our furry babies die, because we can't afford to help them live. Now I'm facing the toughest decision of my life, as I consider euthanization for a kitty who may not even be terminally ill if I was rich. Read Less

If this review were just for the vet care, I would give it 4+ stars but the truth that if I graded the "experience" it would be 1 star so I averaged it.  I understand it is an ER clinic and they are busy but it took only 1/2 hour to be seen by triage and seen and diagnosed by a vet. BUT, then it took an hour after that to be checked out and I finally left when it was going to take even more time to get the drugs prescribed.  I had them phone scripts into a pharmacy rather than wait even longer with a sick and contagious dog in a crowded waiting room. This is not good for my dog or for all the pets around me.  The suggestion at that front desk was that I could wait outside but again, sick dog in 85 degree weather doesn't seem like a good idea either.   Good vet treatment but the admin staff dropped the ball on this one. I was impressed with the generosity that was given to my dog while she was there and they way that they put her to sleep.. it was very peaceful and they were very kind. The emergency front desk ladies (the majority) were very snotty and rude, like irritated that they have to help you even though it's their job. The neurologist I saw was a very intelligent man who was very professional and empathetic and he seems to really care for animals. My dog died due to non response to medication which is out of their hands, so I in no way blame them, but one thing that makes me cringe is the debt I've acquired. In two weeks there i was charged $8526 dollars and they only give an option for 6 months no interest with care credit. It's is absolutely outrageous, they charge you for everything. I would do anything to save my dog, so we didn't object to any costs. Not only do I have to grieve the loss of my dog but I also have to come up with 8500 dollars in 6 months. After the 8000 I spent they still charged me over 300 dollars to put her to sleep in the end which is even more insulting. A lot of them were very nice people but to take that much money away from someone they are obviously super greed oriented. If I had a chance to take her somewhere else I feel I would have.. not because they didn't do their job correctly but because of the cost. I'm left with an aching heart and a massive debt Read Less

Unfortunately, I had to take my cat to the ER after 4 days of treatment with our regular vet. Ultimately, she had to be put down. It was a terrible situation to be in, but it was the best possible experience because of the care and consideration of the staff, techs and doctors. We've been through dire times with other pets and vets; nothing compared to how thoughtfully they handled everything. This place is a bit out of the way for me, but it is well worth the trip if you consider your pets family like we do. I will not hesitate to bring an pet here in the future. When I arrived I didn't realize my cat was in critical condition, but they recognized it and attended to her immediately. The staff and doctors were patient, listened to all I had to say about my cat's situation, took the time to explain everything to me and answer all my questions. They put me in a private room to grieve and contemplate my decisions until I was ready to proceed. When leaving, they showed me a side exit to avoid walking through onlookers in the waiting area. Since my cat was too sick to be moved, they allowed me back in the ER with an offer to spend as much time as I needed with my cat before I had to put her down. Walking into the ER, I was impressed by the attention and care I saw them giving to the many other animals they had back there. When I got to my cat, they already had a box of tissues ready for me and gave me a clay ornament with imprints of her paws and name on it as a memento. Read Less

PVSEC is a truly exceptional place. After a heartbreaking week, we learned our incredible dog was diagnosed with advanced lymphoma. Our girl spent about 5 days in their hospital, seeing Emergency, Internal Medicine, and Oncology staff. All the doctors are amazing and obviously very good at what they do. Ellie Mae (our dog) was treated by Dr. Jett in Emergency medicine, Drs. Sepecy and Ostrosky in Internal medicine, and Dr. Newman in Oncology--all so amazing. They really seemed to grasp how much our dog means to us, and while the news was terribly painful, Dr. Ostrosky delivered it well, and I got the sense that the team would do everything they could to help Ellie. Aside from the docs, the staff is also incredible. The receptionists are quick and friendly, and the technicians are wonderful. We made many visits to the hospital to spend time with Eillie, and they welcomed us with open arms every time (even around 12am one morning!). I'm fortunate to have a great veterinarian that my cats see regularly for checkups and routine issues.  A week ago, I noticed that my male cat  was having some litterbox issues: namely, he peed outside of it (not his first time doing that, I'm afraid), and then proceeded to make several attempts to urinate in the litterbox, but producing almost nothing.  I've heard enough horror stories to know that these are signs of a potential urinary tract blockage, and that in male cats it's very common and extremely dangeous.  Because this was happening well after my vet's office was closed for the day, I had to make a quick decision: wait it out until the morning or take him to the ER?  Well, when faced with a potentially gravely ill cat or worse by the next day, I decided to pack him up and go to PVSEC.From the moment we arrived, I was impressed.  It was spacious and clean, and the vet techs at the desk got me checked in very quickly.  We didn't have to wait long to get into triage, and my poor guy was handled with care.  What I appreciated is that every step of the way, I was told what the next step in the examination process would be, and asked if it was okay.  I realize this is probably because of how expensive it is to pay for this out of pocket.  I'm also fortunate enough to have a decent pet insurance policy, so I was in a good position to be able to keep going.  Now, when it was all said and done, this was a very long night for both of us.  I was probably there for around 3 hours, and given that it was late at night and this was an ER situation, I didn't fuss about it.  (The staff was all very kind and apologetic about the wait too.)  In the end, they didn't find evidence of crystals or blockage, but sent my cat and I home with a course of medication as a precaution, as well as a promise of a call if the lab culture turned up anything they couldn't find that evening.  As it turns out, the culture came back and he tested positive for E.coli, so they went ahead and ordered/filled a prescription for the right antibiotics that I could pick up at my convenience.  When I returned, once again, that process was smooth.I really appreciate the thoroughness of the team, as well as their professionalism and courtesy that my pet and I were shown.  Dealing with a pet's medial care is stressful enough, and they clearly know how to deal with a distressed pet and their owner.  And, since I'm going to be coming back with my other cat for a specialist consult and surgery to address another issue, I feel a lot better about it, knowing that PVSEC appears to have very high standards of care. These people are heartless crooks who will overcharge like you crazy.  The doctors here each own their piece of the practice and set their own rates, which tend to change hourly and no matter what they quote you as an estimate, expect to pay much more.  However, I would strongly encourage you to shop around for better prices.  I found out AFTER paying $1675 for an MRI ($3000 after including tests and consultation), that University Veterinary Specialists only charges $1170 for the same MRI! PVSEC was amazing when our family dog was attacked by a deer. They took excellent care of our dog and provided constant updates and visits to make us feel as comfortable as possible during a traumatic time. The staff and doctors were wonderful. I was even able to call in the middle of the night and speak to a staff member about how our dog was doing. Everyone clearly loves animals who worked there and made it as easy as possible on our family. They even provided help locating another 24 hour emergency clinic when our dog relapsed a few months later while we were on vacation out of state. Would highly recommend this clinic to care for your furry friend. Read Less

In my opinion, this place is a business with costs that are outrageous, and their service is not good. We went here for advice on the best course of action for our 11 1/2 year old dog after consulting with our own vet twice who did not have the right equipment to definitively diagnose the cause of the problem. After spending about $1000 on testing/procedures, surgery was recommended to resolve our dog's immediate issue at an estimated cost total of $6000. We agreed because as was explained to us by the two PVSEC vets we talked to, it would give us more time with our dog. After leaving our dog at the facility thinking we'd be returning in 2 days to pick him up, we received a call from the surgeon within an hour. The call was to tell us that our dog had one of the worst cases of metastatic disease seen, there was no explanation for how this was not caught before surgery, and there was nothing that could be done for him. Therefore, we had to make a decision to put him to sleep without having a chance to say goodbye and knowing that his life ended upon our decision to put him through a procedure that we now know was completely unwarranted. Then, we received a bill for $3100 of the $4500 deposit they required we make. We tried to work with the business to get them to refund some of the money given what had transpired; however, they refused and provided an account that was discrepant from what we experienced. The person we dealt with did not provide correct details as to why we were there to begin with. They claimed we agreed to everything and that they gave us sufficient information to know there was a risk that despite all of the expensive diagnostic testing our dog could be full of bleeding, cancerous masses throughout his abdomen. The whole thing was ridiculous and this experience was unlike anything we have dealt with before. Not only were they insulting to our intelligence, they seemed to have no regard for what we had been through and they had no concerns with taking over $3000 from us for it. I strongly recommend anyone in need of pet specialty or emergency services to first research what other options are out there. My vet always recommended Ohio State for quality care but the distance made it not practical. I see there is a newer similar facility south of Pittsburgh that I will be trying should we need specialty care in the future. Read Less

I don't know what other pet owners have experienced? Not to say that this review stands for the entire hospital, but my experience solely reflects that of which was from Dermatology. Anyone who has a pet that suffers from allergens or is looking for a diagnosis of what could be ailing your pets skin would assume that going to a specialist would be a step in the right direction. My dog has been suffering with skin problems for a handful of years. We've tried everything from changing her food/brand/proteins/grains/non-grains, to different kinds of over the counter allergy meds, specialized shampoos, etc. Nothing worked. I specifically went to this Dr. because my vet recommended that we tried this route not to mention that this is the ONLY dermatologist(vet) in our 150 mi surrounding area. Not to my surprise they did everything that my regular vet already tested for in their office and charged more for the same exam and same tests. My dog is considered of "senior" age 9yrs. I was told that my dog was too old to be tested for Allergies. So...for $412.00 I got the same answers that my regular vet gave me. Was told my dog was too old for tests needed to see what she is specifically allergic to, prescribed a maintenance medicine that can have long term effects that were not explained to me (of course, why would they my dog is "old") and charged me nearly double of what I can get the same meds elsewhere. He first went as an emergency and had to have blood transfusions due to acute hemolytic anemia- he then had been going for blood tests every couple weeks- then every month and medications to keep him well-- he did very well for about a year and crashed again and had another 5 day stay with blood transfusions again - his meds were switched up and he has now ( knock on wood) been doing great for over 14 months- Internal Medicine - Dr Klostermann and the techs there have been great and take wonderful care of Tommy !! We ended up here when one of my dog had fluid around her lungs. After some tests, it was determined she had a condition called chylothorax. She was already in discomfort at that point, and our best option was surgery to hopefully fix the problem. Throughout the entire process, every staff member we met with was very kind and understanding. After she was admitted and we were waiting for the diagnosis, I spent an entire day there and the staff made sure I had a quiet space to sit with my Zelda and relax between medication doses. When it came time to have the surgery done, Dr. Saile was amazing and I knew she was in the best hands. Having to leave her there was tough for her and for us, but we knew it was the best option to save her. She is doing well now and is as spoiled as ever. I'll start by saying that I only gave 1 star because it doesn't go any lower. I spent over $1,000 on my 6 month old Yorkie that just had an issue pooping but they insisted that she stayed the night and possibly next night as well for "further examination." Not even 12 hours later they say they may need $700 to $1100 more dollars for tests that they're not even sure will help. After saying I may not have enough money to give for the tests they recommend that it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider putting her down. Thank god I called my regular vet who told me to "get her out of that place and bring her by immediately". After taking her to the regular vet my puppy is feeling so much better and is on the right track to getting better. Plus I'll add that my vet felt bad for us and said it was free of charge. Kai was 5 and healthy as a horse till he got lymphoma. I brought him here for his chemotherapy. The first one worked beautifully, at first. He was in a good remission for like 3 months. That would be his last good remission. After 4 more months and 5 more chemos he died. At the end I heard that they were curing dogs of lymphoma in North Carolina with bone marrow transplants after radiation. A CURE! I had hope but it was quickly dashed by the vet at this place. She said he needed to be in a strong extended remission. Like the one he was in after chemo #1. Now it was way too late. Our vet knew about this cure, but didnt say anything until I mentioned it. She should have told us about it in the beginning. He could have been saved, but this place wouldn't have made $20,000 off us. They would have only gotten maybe $5,000 or less. Greed is the only answer. That all went down in 2009. Now I get a bill all this time later for $200. A slap in the face. They even sent it to a collection agency. $200 after he died. My review is per an oncology consultation for a cat with a cancer diagnosis. This place certainly does a lot of business; the waiting room was packed.  That said, I knew the day might be long in advance when making the appointment.  They told me how much the office visit would cost and that there was a chance for treatment that same day and what the range of price might be.  I met with Dr. Newman, a lovely woman who proceeded to talk with me at length and made me very comfortable.  They were going to run some tests and she informed me I could leave the premises and they'd call me when they were ready.  So, I was able to go out for lunch and not wait on-site.  That was a nice touch.  They then wanted to run some more tests on tissue samples my personal veterinarian had so would arrange that and she let me know the cost range.  Once those test results were in, she gave me a call and discussed that we should just wait and see. What I liked is that everyone at the facility, from the appointment taker to the oncology doctor to staff at the center were all very professional and courteous.  I do have to make one suggestion to them (I should write them to let them know).  There was this social worker who came out to the waiting area, stood in front of us and announced that she was a social worker and that if we needed grief counseling she was available and then reached to shake someone's hand.  Ok.... let's just say the mood in the room turned silent as she spoke, as if the grim reaper had shown up.  No one wanted to look directly into her eyes because, face it, many of us hadn't had our appointments yet, many of us weren't there for 'the end" of our loved ones (and, maybe if we were, we didn't yet know it).  So, I think when she had someone's eye contact and then reached out her hand to shake theirs, the rest of us inwardly cringed and moved slightly away.  Someone really needs to tell this social worker that this was not a funeral home.  You don't offer grievance counseling until someone has passed or is sure to pass.  Geez.... I can't say enough good things about the cardiology and orthopedic department of PSVEC. My dog has dilated cardiomyopathy and is being treated by Dr. Erin Anderson. She is knowledgeable, compassionate and extremely dedicated. Recently, my dog had to spend 3 days in the hospital at PVSEC to stabilize him and he get his heart regulated. Dr. Anderson was out of town so Dr. Sikorska took over his care during this time. When Dr. Anderson came back in town, she called me and apologized for not being there. Obviously, no apology is needed but she does genuinely care about her patients. The cost of his hospitalization was a pleasant surprise. I honestly feel like the fees were misrepresented at this establishment -- its certainly a well-equipped, clean place with a friendly staff, but I want to put it out there that you should drill down nearly every scenario into writing to avoid the situation in which I (and my dog) find ourselves.Today, my exuberant 10 month old Boxer-Mix Rescue ate a squeaky ball at the park.  My vet - Big Easy (who I love) - recommended an endoscopy, which is a procedure that only PVSEC does.At PVSEC, I was presented with an x-ray and told that an endoscopy would be a great way to go.  And -- if unsuccessful, thus necessitating surgery, the fee would go down to a total $250, which would encompass the ancillary costs like the visit, the anesthesia, and the prep work. The endoscopy was unsuccessful, and we have to do surgery.  Thankfully, he's not in any immediate danger so we can go to our local vet who was far more reasonable on the cost-front.  That said, upon leaving PVSEC, i was stuck with a bill for $900.The vet who gave me the estimate told me she was very clear - "the words came right out her mouth," as she put it - that the endoscopy fee would only go down to $250 if unsuccessful, but that was just the fee for performing the service.  The anesthesia, and ancillary costs, on top of this "reduced" endoscopy fee still put my visit to $900.  Tomorrow I'm probably going to spend another $2000. I'm an attorney - people try to get out of paying me all the time when things don't go the way they want them to.  That said, had I thought i'd still be charged ANYTHING for an endoscopy, just to find out i had to have surgery the next day, I'd just go for surgery outright.  I'd be $900 richer.Enter at your own risk - get everything in writing, and resist the ooh's and aah's at your pet.  This is a business, and a shady one at that. We brought our elderly dog to PVSEC for a cough that became worse overnight and into the evening. We brought him in thinking he would be able to come home and that whatever he had could be managed. Dr. Rexford confirmed what our veterinarian said the previous day, he had a collapsed lung lobe and enlarged lymph nodes in his lung, in addition to telling us he had a punctured lung. We were blindsided by not only being told that our dog was slowly suffocating, but that it would be morally wrong for him to let our dog go home. To say that we were hysterical is an understatementthis was our first dog and a part of our family. Dr. Rexford was so kind to us and provided the moral support that we so desperately needed. He kept saying good boy as he was putting our dog to sleep and it makes us so happy that he passed away in a room filled with love. We did not get a chance to say thank you since we couldnt bear to stay with our dog after he passed. Thank you Dr. Rexford for being so empathetic and treating our dog as your own. Thank you for seeing details in his x-rays his veterinarian missed and allowing him to go peacefully. I am so glad we brought him here. This is one review I wish I didn't have to write. Not because of the staff or anything like that. But because by definition, this isn't a place you really come to when things are going well. In my case, I came here with my family because of a sick pet. Last Monday, my beautiful kitty lost her ability to stand. By Wednesday, we brought her to this vet center, desperately looking for answers that two prior vets could not give us. Why couldn't she walk? Why was she anemic? Why did she suddenly become hypothermic? They admitted her immediately, got her settled and warm, led us back to visit her after four hours of initial exams and tests...and got to work as we went home, wondering what would happen next. And for four days, they looked for answers. Every day, we visited our cat hoping she'd have a shot at getting better. And every day they kept going - where other vets had been stumped by confusing test results, they kept on looking for the problem, ultimately relying on tissue samples to get the final diagnosis.Lymphoma.After that, we had to make a decision. The staff helped us make it. They gave us a private room to sit with our beautiful baby for two hours last night. Not only that, they did this during what's officially known as "non-visiting hours" - from 6:00-8:30pm the vets and technicians do rounds around their clinic so that every single vet knows exactly what is going on and can provide seamless care for every furbaby that walks through their doors. People really aren't supposed to visit during this period. But they let us come. And let us sit as long as we wanted with our wonderful cat. So that we could say goodbye. And when we were finally as ready as any pet owner ever is, a staff member came in. She handed us a beautiful clay mold of our cat's paw print, as a memento - we had no idea they were going to make that for us. Said staff member reassured us with a soft kind voice about the decision and the process. Because of her, I found the strength to stay in the room until the end - so that I could be with my baby as she went to sleep for the last time.I have never sobbed as hard as I did when I left this place. But I left knowing that for four days, the most dedicated staff of vets in the city made my beautiful girl as comfortable as was humanly possible. I left knowing that during her last days my baby was surrounded by her family during visits, and by the most compassionate and understanding animal lovers I've met in the city to date during the day. I left knowing that we, and the staff here, did everything we could possibly do for her. And I left knowing we did the right thing, as hard as it's going to be as we adjust to life without our precious kitty. So thank you, PVSC, for being there for owners like us in what I can only imagine is a rough, rough job. Your dedication is truly appreciated, and your efforts will not be forgotten by this pet owner. Read Less

There are actually only a few compassionate people that work at this organization so if compassion is one of the traits that you’re seeking, in my opinion, I would not go here .

For the past two years I have been taking my cat Tommy there. I am beyond grateful for the care and kindness by the oncology department and specifically Dr. Anderson and her vet tech, Sue that was shown to my family and our german shepherd, Rocky. In August, Rocky was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in the roof of his mouth that ate away a portion of his bone. Although there was not a lot of options available due to the location of the tumor, Dr. Anderson put Rocky on a treatment plan that kept him pain-free as long as possible, and with us much longer than we expected. I will forever be grateful for letting her come back to us. I will be back for any issues any of my dogs have in the future.Read Less

Read Less
