He's a very knowledgeable man. The only person I trust with my animals in Pittsburgh. He doesn't upsell, doesn't try to trick you into using unnecessary and expensive procedures and when he tells me what's wrong, he's almost always right. That being said, he does come off a little condescending at times but not purposely. He just assumes you don't know what he's talking about so he starts from nothing and tells you literally every basic detail you need (which comes in handy, because then you're not calling back 6 times asking questions). I like this vet a lot, but you have to know what you're getting into. He has years and years of experience, but not a lot of people skills- and that's okay. He told me everything I needed to know and seems like a nice guy. I get how he could come off as condescending, but he's really just trying to  inform you. I don't want a vet who will be my friend- I want a vet who knows how to look out for my cat. If you're looking for an expert and you're not too sensitive, this is the place. If you need a little more emotional support from your pets doctor, you probably should go somewhere else. Read Less

I used to take my dog to "VCA Met Vet West Animal Hospital" in Robinson and when he got neutered there & we went back for his checkup to see how he was healing, I noticed he started scratching at his ears. I asked the tech, after the vet looked at the stitches, can hey please look at my dog's ears (which takes a sec) to make sure nothing is wrong. The tech came back and said that the vet said "I am only scheduled for check up on the neutering that they could not look at his ears" Ummm... Immediately found a new vet.. Here at Thornwood Veterinary Hospital. This vet is SO THOROUGH EVERY appt, that you KNOW your pet WILL be in good hands. I LOVE this place! Read Less

My only recommendation for this place is to keep your animal far away!  The recepionist was unfriendly and irritable when I arrived.  I waited in the dirty waiting room for 40 minutes before being seen by the vet who was extremely condescending the entire visit.  I ended up refusing his recommendations and only paying for the visit.  I will never step foot in here again and will gladly wait a few extra days to see a professional. This vet is the worst I've ever been to. I took a friend and her dog to this vet because her dog was extremely sick and suffering. It was time for her faithful companion of 17 years to be put to sleep. Now, I also have had dogs that have gotten old, sick and needed to end their suffering. It's difficult to make the decision to let them go. Our dogs are family and we love them very much. Every time I had a vet put my dogs to sleep, they were sympathetic and were humane about the whole process. This vet was NOT. He was cold the entire time and did not offer condolences at any time. But that's not the worst part. Every time that I had to do this (as well the times she has had to do the same in the past) the vet gave two injections. The first was to calm the dog so I could hold him while he passed. The second was to let them pass without pain. This vet gave just one shot and didn't tell us that he was going to do it this way. He had his assistant hold the dog still and roughly jammed the needle into the dog's leg. We thought that that was going to be the sedative so my friend could hold her dog as he passed. As blood dripped onto the table from his rough injection, the dog cried and yelled in pain for nearly a minute, as the vet took his time. After he emptied the syringe, he didn't even look up at us and said "the brain is dead now, so you can touch him". We were stunned and couldn't believe what had just happened. When we asked why he didn't do it like the times we had our dogs put to sleep in the past, he said "I didn't think that it needed to be done that way". My friend cried her eyes out for two days, upset that her dog died basically screaming in pain. I advise anyone thinking of taking their animal to this man, to look elsewhere and not trust him. If you need to have to put your pet to sleep, don't take him to this vet. He'll just kill them painfully. Read Less

Dr Schuerger is a fantastic Vet! He is very intelligent, knowledgeable and animal centric. You need to let him do his work and then ask questions--he is very focused on the animal. His staff is great too! If you want to provide your pet with top quality care this is the veterinary place Read Less
