Our dog cut her leg severely on a Friday night and we had to take her in for emergency surgery. Everyone was professional and compassionate, from handling my first panicked phone call to giving discharge instructions in the morning. Dr. Lee called us as soon as she was in recovery after midnight. (They asked if we wanted a call). They handled her and us with kindness and competence at every level. We highly recommend this clinic in an emergency. When I called our vet in the morning, they had already received a fax with all the details of the procedure and follow-up. BAEC really went the extra mile for us and we're grateful. Read Less

This is the second time we came to this DUMP , the first time several years ago we were told our dog had cancer after doing some useless testing , after the weekend went to our own vet and she told us the dog didnt have cancer .A few years later we bring another dog to this place and we proceed to tell the Dr the issues and he proceeds to man handle her and was very rough with her he looks her over and never used a scope to check her eyes or ears and he recommends we take her for an mri of her brain he is very sure we have a neurological issue , he couldn't even read the test results not sure he knows how to read, 4 hours later and a 300 dollar bill we leave ,,now go to Sunbury animal hospital and see a real Vet and she uses a scope on her eyes and ears and finds a severe ear infection , 4 days later now and after being put on meds the dog is almost back to her old self , thank god we didn't listen to these MORONS i wouldn't recommend this place to anyone , IF YOU GO TO THIS PLACE YOU WILL REGRET IT , ,,,,,, THIS PLACE BLOWS,,, SINCERELY , TIM H Read Less

After calling 7 other places in the area our girl had passed away. So DO NOT come here because clearly this place has unpleasant employees and clearly doesn’t care about your beloved pets when they are in an emergency!!! Read Less

Took my pommy there Sunday night. She was doing good and playing. And all of a sudden she started getting very sick and gulping for air. Called down for some advice. They said to keep an eye on her and if I felt the need to call them back and to tell them I was in my way. I got down there around 1145 at night. Was checked in and taken back to a room. Where they took her vitals and temp. I was told that it would be at least a half hour till she was seen. Which was no problem I was informed that they had an emergency. But during my wait nurses did check in to see if we were ok. When. Dr noble came in the room she really checked my coco out a d said that she was having an allergic reaction to something. She took coco back Gave her a shot and gave me a script for the next few days. My cost was 177 bucks which I thought was very reasonable. I took my dog here on a Sunday morning because my Vet was closed and these criminals almost Killed him. He is a 2 year old blue Pit Bull and he was misdiagnosed by the Vet at Berks. My dog came in on a stretcher because his legs and joints were swollen and the intense pain had him constantly crying. The blonde heavy set lady at the desk immediately screamed at my husband for not having a leash on him. Looks of disgust were apparent. The dog could not move and I called 2 hours ahead to explain the situation but they still felt like they needed to be nasty because he was a pit bull. They asked how much Cash we had on us right away. HUGE Mistake. I told them we had a $1,000 Cash and they did an X ray and gave some bogus Diagnosis about "Food Bloat" and then kept us there for 2 hours with a referral that said take my Dog to a Vet. Seriously? After charging us $958 Cash, they sent my Dog Rocky Home To Die! He cried all night long until I could take him to his real Vet at Mountain Shadow.Turned out he has Lupus and the food in his stomach was caused by his inability to posture in the position of going poo because of his swollen joints. The Vet Dr Chung Lee even mentioned cutting my dog open but expressed deeply that the costs would be High. He probably could have killed him because it wasn't even Food Bloat and that would have NOT treated Lupus in any way whatsoever! My Husband and I went in to to talk to the Director, a 4' 9'' pale disagreeable man who Never sent my Vet the medical records or the X ray and totally defended Dr Chung Lee in every aspect of course. My Vet at Mountain Shadow saw my dog for 2 minutes and started treating him for Lupus. Thank God in Heaven for Mountain Shadow, because Berks Animal almost Killed him. Stay Far Away!!!! Read Less

Very disappointed in the doctor this weekend. I will refrain from stating her name, but lets just say that after I approached the desk to pay my bill after waiting over a half hour for them to enter my charges, the doctor came running out from the back yelling at me that she was "sorry we have a dog in the back trying to die!! I will get to you as soon as I can!!!" SERIOUSLY!?! WHAT?! If the dog is trying to die, why are you walking away from that emergency to yell at me!? How unprofessional!!! All I wanted to do was give you my money so I could take my pet home. I wasn't upset, yelling at staff or being nasty, I just simply said I needed to get going and asked how much longer it would be. I certainly appreciate that she was trying to save an animal, and would have expected the same if my own pet was that critical The vet shouldn't have been the one to enter my charges ... that is what your staff is for. And no vet should walk away from an emergent situation to yell at a client. I should have just walked out and let them find me for my money. Unreal to be treated that way. Read Less

We are so grateful for this 24/7 e.r. for animals! We came home one night, it was raining, and it was November...COLD. We found a 5 week old kitten laying in the middle of our stone driveway. It was soaked and crying, and went into shock when we picked it up. He was convulsing and unresponsive. He could hardly breathe. I called ahead to let them know our situation and that we were on our way. They told us right away, on the phone, that it was $xxx for the initial exam, plus whatever treatments, and that we are responsible for the bill. We accepted this and were on our way. The very second we walked in, they rushed us to a room, explained the paperwork, and took the kitten to go to work on him. They explained all possibilities to us, after they examined him, along with the potential treatments. After the exam, they walked us through the breakdown of potential treatments, along with the possible costs (they gave a price range, a low and a high). We were able to accept or decline each treatment, before anything was done. We appreciated this aspect very much. NO SURPRISE COSTS, nor were we pressured into anything unnecessary (we declined a few things, with no trouble from them). I was surprised too, that our bill was well under $200. That included the exam, treatment, and medication. We were very happy with this place. We didn't feel like we were taken advantage of, financially. We expected to be gouged, like a typical vet place, but were pleasantly surprised! Will definitely return if we ever need to (but hopefully wont ever have to). 2 hours later arriving, we were going home, with some instructions, medication, and a happy healthy kitty in our arms. I asked if we could just do an i.v. just to get fluids in her to. Get her fever down and they told us she would get an estimate again and it took almost 45 minutes to get an estimate because the vet was more worried about phone calls about someone else. then the vet came back in amd was all mouthy to us because we were getting upset and she was still trying todo all these things so i asked which ones on the list is she gonna do and she told me"hold on im talking" yea well im paying so you need to calm down. It's 4 stars only because just like any E. R, you end up waiting a while, which is frustrating ! Lol Fortunately, we were not life threatening. Had I read any of the reviews, I might have had reservations about going there, but my vet suggested it, as it may have been something they couldn't have handled in the office. From the moment I called ahead of time and spoke to River, up to the time we left, I didn't have any of the negative experiences that other reviews stated. River was extremely nice and easy to talk to. The paperwork was minimal and she did warn me that the second page regarding euthanasia (in essence, a DNR form) could be disturbing. So I was prepared. Sad to say, I knew any life saving procedures necessary in an emergency would have been impossible for me to afford, I had to check the box that stated do not resuscitate. The vet tech was sweet (I'm sorry I forgot her name) and even sat on the floor with us while talking with us. Dr. Reis was excellent; she did the examination, explained the issue that was going on, and explained what they needed to do. Only after the diagnosis did they give me an estimate of the costs. Perhaps the other reviewers issues were more intense and required much more than ours, so it makes sense to have that paid first before they performed any surgeries or anything. Who wouldn't want their pet fixed first?.. and then not be able to pay for it. At discharge, we were given very detailed, easy instructions. They all did the appropriate amount of "oohs" and "ahhs" and fawned all over my baby girl, too! Thank you to Berks Animal Emergency staff!Read Less

On Thursday night our beloved Bandit was hit by a car and was left for dead by a dumpster. My husband and I frantically scrambled to find a vet that was open at the time of the accident. BAERC was our only option as our vet had already left for the evening. When we called the very first thing that was said was well it will be 110 dollars just to bring him in to be seen, that didn't include any treatment. When we arrived he was taken from us and we were not allowed to be by his side. Our Poor baby was frightened! He is one of our family. As we were waiting what seemed like forever the doctor came in and started saying that he needed a entire battery of tests that were going to cost a lot of money. My husband kept asking what was the bottom line how much do we need to get him started. The doctor was very rude and said that if my husband didn't stop yelling he was going to be asked to leave. My husband wasn't yelling we just wanted to know how much we needed. Well the doctor then said I'll go and work up a price for you until then you can apply for care credit. My husband said well send the nurse in so we can do that and again the doctor took his time. Our poor dog was in pain where is the humanity and caring that we had expected. Well to go on.... The doctor came back after doing tests and x-rays and said it looked like his vertebrates were broken and that he needed to stay the night until the surgeon came in the next day for a consult. We asked if we could see him before we left him there and they told us yes. At this point we were almost at 1200 dollars. We said our goodbyes to our boy and went home to wait. The next day came and the surgeon took forever to call us and when he did he proceeded to tell us that he has no idea what was wrong and that he needed to send our bandit to Philadelphia for an MRI that would cost near 1500 dollars and most likely he would need surgery that would be close to 3000 dollars. We said that we didn't have that kind of money right away could we take him home and think about our plan of care for him. Well..... To make a long story short we were told he should really stay in the hospital for another night my husband and I said no we are going to come to get him they said that we should consider putting him down since we didn't have the money. When we got there to get him our bill was 2300. Again we were told that his quality of life was going to be poor so end his life. My poor husband was crushed we took him home and made the appointment to be seen the next day at our vet and let him make the call since we trust him. Well guess what.... Our bandit didn't need surgery his spinal cord is intact his back wasn't broken. He is going to recover he is up and moving around. If we would have listened to them down at Berks he wouldn't be with us now. All they saw was an opportunity to make money not an animal that needed care. Shame on you for putting greed before compassion. Do not take your animals here. Read Less

The staff saved my dog's life twice, period. I'll be forever grateful to BAERC for how well they cared for my pet. After two experiences there, I have seen that these people love animals, and that's why they work there. I have a thirteen year old Labrador Retriever. I brought her in the first time for what I thought was stomach distension, but they found out it was pyometra that required surgery. They spelled out her options clearly, then referred us back to our regular veterinary hospital for the surgery. She stayed overnight for supervision and stabilization, then on the day of the surgery, they prepared her for the car ride. They did a very good job of keeping the veterinarian informed with everything. I feel that my dog was in good hands the whole time. The second incident was more serious. After I took her for a walk, I noticed my dog was struggling to breathe. When I rushed her to BAERC, they found out she had a paralyzed larynx. She required emergency services. We ended up getting her a laryngeal tieback surgery performed at BAERC by Phil Zeltsman. The follow up care was very attentive. It's about two years later now, and my dog is enjoying her senior years with a lot of energy. All I can say is that I would not hesitate to call them again if I had to. It was costly -- and all emergency services will be -- but I can't put a price on my dog still being here with me today, and in good health. I deeply appreciate all the care they have provided for my pet. Read Less

I took my dog Ghost here @ 3:30 am this past Saturday morning when she was rolling to one side panting heavily and had her legs far apart as if bracing herself. They diagnosed her with Geriatric Vestibular Syndrome and hospitalized her over the weekend. I was extremely pleased with the staff and the care she received. Some other reviews complain about the cost of the care, which when dealing with any emergency with an animal tends to be expensive. At that time of night, we were immediately seen. There was a Dr, Receptionist and 4 techs all on duty. In order to provide that type of service you have to be staffed properly and have equipment and medication to handle anything that may come in. Monday morning they contacted my normal vet AVAH, whom I also rate highly, and they then followed up with me about the care and condition of my dog. My dog is back home this morning and I am continuing her care. Many thanks to Berks Emergency for being there for my girl when she needed help. Read Less

They wanted $3,500.00 up front. I gave them the $50.00 for diagnosing her and left with my pup. The next morning I called the Humane society and I took her to their office where they were nice enough to sell me the required meds to treat my pup for $250.00 dollars. 3 days later and a lot of prayers, my pup was back to normal and the parvo virus gone. These vets take an oath to help animals but the Berks animal emergency center in Shillington would not even sell me the meds to treat her since I didn't have the outrageous $3,500.00 that they wanted. Our cat died here in a metal cage away from her owners, after being proded and bled physically, financially, and emotionally. Dr. Reese proclaimed it would be inhumane to take home our cat in the condition she was in. She mislead us into believing that she could still have 6 months to a year. She told us that her kidney numbers were off the chart. Instead of being honest with the cat's chances, she pulled on our heartstrings to keep her there, and threatened that to take her home would be inhumane, and said she would not let us. Dr. Reese used the denial we were in for financial gain, despite the fact that our cat's kidney levels were in a state of failure. Dr. Reese appears to care about animals and proclaims an oath, don't be fooled. This was the least inhumane of our choices, not that we had any, except to leave her with strangers. We visited our cat later that day, there were brown bugs we found on her shaved neck, and crawling on the towel she was wrapped in. $1260 later, and a few short hours after we left, she died without the closure we needed. Choose for yourself, which is more inhumane? Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

The next morning I called the Humane society and I took her to their office where they were nice enough to sell me the required meds to treat my pup for $250.00 dollars. 3 days later and a lot of prayers, my pup was back to normal and the parvo virus gone. Read Less
