The current model at most Vet's offices is to play on heartstrings and charge an arm and a leg for services and add ons. It is truly mind blowing how other offices take advantage of people because of the love for their pets. I can not begin to express appreciation for the way Dr Larrimer fairly prices his services and treats people. It's about being a vet first here and doing what's right for your pet. What amazed me was him telling me to get a script filled somewhere else because he can not buy the medicine in bulk and as inexpensive. $100 to treat my dog's ear infection???   This is absurd.  There was no mention, when asked if I minded if they clipped her ear hair before dosing her with the ear drops, that the cutting of the hair around her ears would cost $16.  Then, instead of treating the one ear with the $20 medication, both ears were treated for $40 despite the fact that the other ear appeared completely normal.  $100 for this visit to treat a simple ear infection.  I never felt like I was being extorted in the past when seeing Dr. Larrimer.  However, I have definitely felt this way the last several visits we've had where we have seen the younger female vet, Dr. B.  I'm becoming disgusted with this place. Dr. Larrimer & his staff are top notch when it comes to care, price, professionalism, services & flexibility. My most recent experience there is a good example off those... My 12yrs Boxer/JRT mix, Lucy, had sustained an injury to her eye while spending the weekend with family (& their 3 dogs). We had no idea how it happened or how severe it might be, but it looked pretty painful. Since it was on a Sunday & not during office hours, I immediately went to the FPVH Facebook page & sent them a private message explaining the situation. Within the hour someone from FPVH had replied asking me to call them first thing on Monday & they would do everything they could to get her in, which is exactly what they did. Attending to Lucy's eye injury so promptly was only one of the many times Dr. Larrimer & his staff have taken care of us so quickly & professionally. Dr. Larrimer has also removed a massive, fist-sized mass from Lucy's chest a few years ago, and prior to that, they treated her for an extremely bad ear infection. There is seemingly nothing the FPVH can't do. They treat you like family there! The office & exam rooms are very welcoming & inviting. They give you a feeling of being welcomed into Dr. Larrimer's own home, but fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment & supplies. Needed a new veterinarian after mine retired. I have 3 cats, at a recent annual physical with another vet, one was found to have a discolored molar. Went to FPVH for a 2nd opinion about extraction or perhaps just needing a dental cleaning. Met with Dr. Elena Beis. I was immediately impressed with her caring response to Cookie's problem. Cookie doesn't respond well to other vets she's been seen by (hissing & growling), but with Dr. Beis, she was very calm and accepting of her touch & examination. Cookie's response sold me on Dr. Beis, as animals can sense and demonstrate who they trust. She trusted & accepted Dr. Beis. The tooth did need extraction. On the day of the extraction, Dr. Beis called to inform me about progress of Cookie after the extraction, was open to all and any questions I had about post-surgery treatment. Dr. Beis was genuine in her concern about Cookie's health and care. Thank you Dr. Beis. I would recommend this veterinary hospital. Expenditures are about average to other vets, but worth it when it comes to my furry children.Read Less

I recently adopted a kitty, and I wanted to get him into a vet as soon as possible, just for a checkup and to establish a baseline with his overall health and weight. (He's pretty chunky.)  There were a few veterinary offices that are closer to my house than Franklin Park, but it came so highly regarded by reviews that I decided to go for it.  It does speak to its reputation that I had to wait a good 5-6 weeks to get in, but I believe it was worth the wait.  I really liked the facility right away.  It appears to be converted from a house, so it's very inviting...at least from a human perspective.  My poor kitty dislikes traveling anywhere, so he could have cared less if his vet was located in the Taj Mahal.  He cried the entire time we drove and waited, but let me tell you--once we got into the exam room and the vet tech and Dr. Larrimar started looking him over, he got quiet.  Not exactly relaxed and calm, mind you, but they definitely handled him in such a way that he didn't fight them the way I expected him to.  Dr. Larrimar was patient enough to go through all of the medical records that his previous owner gave to me, to explain some of their contents to me, and discuss things like vaccinations and a plan to reduce my cat's weight gradually.  The appointment struck the right balance between taking no more time than was necessary, and yet he spent a good amount of time discussing my cat's health with me until I was satisfied.  Not only that, but since there was a question of whether my cat had had a rabies vaccination in thae past and his medical records didn't make it extremely clear whether he did or not, he even had a vet tech call the old vet's office to double check, so that they could change his vaccination record from 1 year to 3 year if he did indeed have a vaccine in the past.  (He did, and they called me later to confirm that they updated their records with this.) I was happy with the care and service that my kitty and I received, and look forward to a long relationship with Franklin Park Veterinary. Read Less

So far, in the six months or so that I've lived in Franklin Park, I've been displeased with the service I've received from Dr Larrimer & FPVH. In addition to being substantially more expensive than our previous vet (Allegheny North Veterinary Hospital), I found Dr Larrimer's examinations and "theories" about how to treat my dog to be substandard and lacking specific details. Of greatest concern, though, is that I went to the heartworm & lyme clinic a couple weeks ago, and apparently my dog tested positive for lyme disease - not that either the doctor himself nor any of the office assistants bothered to call me and tell me. I gave it a week and a half of no news before calling in myself to receive this bad news. The real kicker was that, after receiving unacceptable answers about why I was never contacted, and unacceptable options on how to proceed, I took our dog back to ANVH to receive additional testing to find out exactly how severe the lyme disease was (there are two tests - one that only tells you positive or negative, but not if it's the actual sickness or just antibodies/immunity, and a far more specific & thorough second test that gives a far greater detail about just how severe the infection is) - it turns out our dog does not have lyme disease. So we waited over long to get incorrect test results - and Dr Larrimer is insisting that there's no way of knowing if it's HIS results that were wrong - and thus will not refund my money for EITHER test.Read Less

We have used the same vet for 20 years. After our last visit there we were very dissatisfied with their service. We decided to give Franklin park vet. I wish we switched long ago. He will not waste your money and he will explain everything in great detail. My Shepard has hip dysplasia and he was diagnosed at a young age. He started having issues so we took him to Franklin park vet. We had the X-ray from our previous vet. He told us that there was no reason to take more. He gave us a script to help with his problem and told us which glucosamine that we should be using since we were giving him the human version. He explained that the human version was not regulated and typically had little to no glucosamine in it. We have noticed a difference in our Shepard already. He also recommended that we come to the lymes disease and heart worm clinic because that maybe part of his problem. So we took all three of our dogs to the clinic and come to find out our Shepard did have lymes disease. I was very surprised that he personally called me to tell me. Our dog was hospitalized for several days, we are talking extensive periods of times, as in weeks or more at the most lengthy times. Dr. L and his staff took extensive measures to treat our loved family pet, including ordering special medicines for her on multiple occasions. All of this was at an extremely reasonable price. Not to mention the facility is spotless and very beautifully decorated on the inside and outside. The vet techs there are excellent as well. The staff as a whole are wonderful caring people. Dr. Larrimer is a wonderful vet and his staff is great also.He had rotator cuff surgery this summer and had other vets filling in for a few months while he was recovering so that is probably why the other reviewer had trouble getting an appointment. Dr. Larrimer gives you time to ask questions and does a thorough job explaining your pet's health issues. This place is amazing! My pup and I recently moved back to Pittsburgh from Boston and were looking for a vet. We gravitated toward Dr. Larimer because of how close he was to our home. After reading some reviews we found that people didn't like the staff, the wait time for an appointment, and some other things. After our appointment today I can, with certainty say that all of those are false claims. I should also preface that we are a new patient--its not like we've been coming to Dr. Larimer for the past x-number of years. The staff could not have been friendlier. Dr. Larimer is as smart as they come and is very easy to speak to. He is very informative and basically separates the BS from the real things to watch out for. Furthermore, the entire place is spotless, very clean and professional. And for those who complained about the wait time for an appointment--call ahead of time, do you due diligence if you care about your pet. First experience with this vet was today. I had been going elsewhere, but my dad saw this one on his way to a relatives house. First, couldn't get an appointment until Monday, but as I was on the phone, they ended up with an opening Saturday. My dog isn't exactly the nicest dog on the planet, and he's a little big, but the doc and his staff knew exactly how to handle him, were VERY knowledgeable, and I'm quite sure they saved my buddies life. This is the best vet not just in Pittsburgh, maybe in the entire state.  The staff is amazing (Cheryl and Ashley!) and Dr. Larrimar is the best vet I've ever been to. I had an absolutely horrible experience at the emergency vet off Campe Horne when my cat got  a life threatening urinary tract blockage.  He ended up in intensive care because they did not monitor him after the surgery. I would go visit him and he was in horrible pain, covered in pee, and I thought he wasn't going to make it.  The same thing happened again a few months later only this time I took him to Franklin Park.  Totally different experience.  Within a day he was fine and they had to keep him there for a week because I went home to Texas for Christmas.  They let him out of the cage to wander around and paid attention to him to make sure there were no complications and this time he was FINE.  More than fine!  It was a night and day different experience.  Dr. Larrimar takes time to listen to you.  He has caught the most minor details in my friend's dog's behavior to help diagnose him with a neurological defect - something that may specialists at other places missed.  Dr. Larrimar and his staff are caring, customer friendly, and highly experienced and I would never dream of taking my pets anywhere else - even if I moved far away I would make the drive to see him. I needed an emergency appointment. I called at 8am. The receptionist said there were no open appointments and would not recommend another place. My dog needed a good doctor right away. This doc may be good but very unreliable in an emergency. The receptionist is cold-hearted and disregards the doc's policy regarding emergencies. I go someplace else now!!! Read Less
