west chester veterinary hospital  is a very, very bad place. the people that run this place, know and understand how much you love your little pets and they use this knowledge to fleece you. the primary motivation of any veterinary hospital, should be the health of its' patients and also to inform and console the people who bring their pets to the hospital, looking for help. the staff at (wcvh) are, at best, rip-off artists, of the first magnitude! they are at their best, if you take your pet to them, as an emergency patient. they know that you, as the owner, have a sick "family member" little pet with you and that you will do "anything" to get help and money will be no object, in seeking that help. they know, that in a time of stress, people will drop their guard and the only thing on their mind, is getting medical help for their pet. they know that, when a pet becomes sick and is taken out of the home, that the  family is, in most cases, very upset and the members of that family all become aware of the empty place created by the absence of that family member. they, the family, will do anything to restore their happy family. as i've said, under these conditions, the staff at (wcvh) will then go to work, doing anything and everything, to run-up the the bill. their prime concern is not your pet, but how far they can run-up your bill! i took my beautiful, very sweet cat, midnight, a (6) year old, male black cat, the (47) long miles, from northeast philadelphia, out to west chester, for what i thought would be help for a breathing problem. as i couldn't get out there, during daytime hours, i had to go after (7) pm. i might also make clear, that midnight had a ''wheezing'' problem for many months. i had to live with his condition, going untreated for so long, because i am very sick myself and have trouble getting around. a second reason for the delay in getting him to medical help, is very simple, couldn't catch him! all of my (7) cats are outside cats and midnight has been the last, to let me touch and pet him. he is big and has claws and is very difficult to try to put him into a carrier. in my weakened condition, it was all but impossible to do this. i had to throw caution to the wind and to fight with him, to get him into the extra large carrier. i almost had a heart attack myself!i was very upset and worried for him. the entire (1) hour drive, i kept pulling over to make sure he was still breathing. at long last, we arrived. it was all i could do, to get him into the building. i had to put him down, several times, before i got to the door.to make a long story a little shorter, they took him into the back and after a hour wait, a woman came out to ask if i could pay for his treatment! i told her that i have an account there and have had several surgeries performed on (2) of my other cats and eye treatments for my little toy poodle, ginny. i told her that i could pay for midnights' care. after another hour, a really ''goofy'' young girl came into the room, with a white sheet of paper and sat next to me. not one word about the condition of midnight! to that point in time, they had taken xrays and had given him ''breathing'' treatments and said it would be better, if he stayed, for the night. she told me, that the treatment, thus far, came to ($1,498) and that i had to pay that amount, right then!!!! i asked for a diagnoses of his condition and was told they needed to do more testing. i, of course, protested this absurd amount of and told her to take another look at her numbers. she came back, a few moments later and told me, that if i didn't want midnight to have oxygen, through the night, the bill would be ($985)!!!!!! i gave her $500 in cash, as a deposit and made the long trip home.early the next day, a nurse called to tell me that midnight needed more treatment and i agreed, still not knowing what the problem was!! but!!! the nurse told me, that before ''anything else'' would be done, to help midnight, i would have to drive back out there and give them another deposit!!!!!!!! no money, no care!!! i went right out there, paid a total of $719 and brought my dear little boy home. as it turned out, midnight had a low-grade bacterial infection and it was quickly treated with $10 worth of antibiotics and within (2) days, he was fine. i knew what was wrong, before taking him out there, but i wanted to be sure. i told the so-called doctor, who brought midnight out, what the problem was and he gave me the meds. he also told me that midnight was ''asthmatic'' and i said, that his present condition does not mean that he has ''feline asthma'', there is a very big difference. this all boils down to a simple examination, by a good, caring vet and the right diagnoses, with meds and your little loved family member will be back home. stay away from this place. remember, all vet places change with time, i had (6) good years there, before it went bad. their actions can cost your little pet its life. West Chester treated my dog over the last year. It started with therapy with Dr. Woodcock then medical boarding while I was away. Then Dr. Marino diagnosed him and treated him.  I can't express how professional, caring and empathetic both Dr. Marino and Dr. Woodcock were.  Dealing with a dog that is ill is very difficult but they made the experience as painless as possible. I highly recommend them and would never consider any other vet. Read Less

Dr Gonzalez has been caring for our rescue dog, Luci, since we found her 5 years ago. He has been wonderful with her and the Luci loves him. He helps to keep her relaxed when she comes in by playing and cuddling with her. The staff there are great. I have no faith or respect for any of the vets here after being a client for many years. They killed my beautiful kitty Emmie by butchering her mouth when extracting teeth, not giving antibiotics, no Vet following through until she went into Septic Shock. They are incompetent and only want to collect outrageous fees. I payed - or + $5000.00 to them to kill my beloved Emmie who was perfectly healthy before they destroyed her. This clinic should be shut down. Their license to practice medicine should be revoked.  There is one star rating because I had to give something to post.. believe me they deserve a  -star rating. They are immoral. They are money grubbers. If you love your pet do NOT USE WEST CHESTER MEDICAL CENTER!! In July 2017 my large goldendoodle Jake was having breathing issues and I took him to West Chester Veterinary Medical Center in the middle of the night. He was examined and diagnosed with congestive heart failure. They were able to treat him and with a medication regimen enable him to lead a fairly normal and active life. Four days ago, after a short Sunday morning walk of less than half a mile Jake collapsed and appeared to be on the brink of death. I rushed him in as an emergency case and after great effort they were able to revive him. He was experiencing a high heart rate (>300 bpm) and arrhythmias. After three days of constant care he was basically stabilized. On Wednesday he was able to go home. I cannot tell you how much my wife and I appreciate the work of all the veterinarians, nurses, and support staff involved in saving our beloved family member. Without their care I know Jake would have died. I would also like to thank Dr. Wilkerson for his efforts, his professionalism, and his obvious concern. He kept us informed all along the way. Within 24 hrs, my dogs are doing so much better. I had a not so great experience the first time I went in. The doctor and nurse/ tech were great with my pup but there were issues with my bill and unexpected charges due to a miscommunication. Due to my stress from moving and sick dog, I was not happy. This was addressed quickly by Alisha and I received a refund for the unexpected charge. Later my dog was sick and I was freaking out. I came in for an emergency visit since it seemed like she was having a reaction to the vaccines. Alisha had called me while I was in the waiting room because she knew of my frustration and I told her I was currently in the waiting room. She came to the room they put me in and talked with me about my concerns from the last visit (you guys need to give this woman a promotion or something she is like a built in therapist and completely changed my mood) additionally Heather (I believe that was her name) went out of her way to come in and check on my dog before she left for the day and actually stayed later than needed to make sure she was taken care of. After seeing a tech and another doctor they gave her fluids, probiotics, anti nausea medicine and an evaluation for free due to the situation. You all did a great job at addressing every concern in a timely manner. Read Less

Personalized Humanistic service. Really personable people who take the time with you, assistants and check in people who really like animals and greet them as they do you when you Check in. I went there for a second opinion and for rehab. They used an alpha stim treatment which took some time, and acclimation for my dog. Lots of loving attention was given to him on both occasions by the practitioners, which I really appreciated. They understood he needed to acclimate and they needed to gain his trust, which was way because they showed him genuine affection. They really love animals here, and understand people. I met a man in the waiting roomWho said he had gone to this practice for 25 years, and how he couldn't say enough about it. I immediately recognized the energy and enthusiasm here as being different and less rote than any other vet clinic I'd been to over the past 28 years we have had pets as a family. I went and picked up my littlest love today from West Chester Veterinary Medical Center. The team there was so patient the day the decision had to be made to let Izzy cross the Rainbow Bridge. The Dr let me hold and pet her as she passed. Never telling me to hurry up, quiet down as I let out some ugly cries, or that she is just a dog. Dr. Gonzalez and his team understood that in bodily form yes she is a dog, but she is family. She was taken way too soon and was so very loved.... Today when I picked her up and let out some more ugly cries, the staff again was patient, and grieved with me at her loss. When it became clear a few months shy of his 16th birthday, we knew it was time for us to say good bye. Dr Cafaro was truly an angel that guided us through a tremendously difficult experience. This happened back in December and I am only now able to bring myself to write this review. The process has been a very sad one, but Dr Cafaro reassured us that it was best for our beloved boy. My daughter shared a wonderful experience when her dog had an infection that required her to make an emergency visit during a hurricane. They were very helpful to her and and Shadow and Shadow got so much better so quickly. They also helped us and were kind and compassionate when we had to put to sleep two of our babies, Zeke and Shadow, over the last couple of years. I can't remember the first doctor's name but we found out that Zeke had been completely misdiagnosed by our former vet. He was so sick, overly sick, and we felt like horrible pet parents. The doc was so kind and helped alleviate our guilt. He gave us medicine so we could have about 3 more days with our pup before doing the hard thing. The doctor who helped us with Shadow was dr. Cafaro. Please hang on to that one as he is so soft-spoken, sweet, and kind to the animals and their humans. We recently adopted a little girl and took her in for a routine check and kennel cough. The first few visits were great. However, last night was absolutely horrible. My girlfriend had called earlier in the day to see if they could give us advice about our dogs ear. They told they could "fit us in" at 7:30pm. We arrived a few minutes early. Long story short, we sat there for an hour and were never seen by the vet, or anyone else. During that one hour, only once did someone speak to us. Someone came out from the back and asked a couple of questions but that's it. No one kept us up to date with timing or anything. So we left and we will be going to another vet. It's not fair to us and especially our pet to sit there for so long. Don't say you can schedule people in if you can't make it work, plain and simple. Also, if you call to talk to a vet, be prepared to wait at least 3 days before you get a response...if you're lucky. Read Less

My dog had escaped and my neighbor took him to WC Emergency Vet. I called to ask what I will need to pick up the dog. I was told bring his chip# and a description. I did that. I was told by a different employee that was not what I needed and she would not release my dog to me. She said, we have the SPCA on the way to pick him up. You can get him there. They will need the same paperwork we are requiring. I called the SPCA, they are the ones that neutered him, placed his chip and gave him his shots. I told her that all I wanted was to get my dog and go home. I must have looked like a crazy woman, standing there with tears in my eyes and wearing my pajamas. I had been looking for him since 5am. If the employee I spoke with had told me I need his vet paperwork and my ID to get him, I would have gone home and gotten them. I was a worried wreck, and the employee called the police. I think she expected to see me arrested. I calmy explained to the officers. Thanks to Officer Graham for speaking with the employee and bringing my dog out to me. Absolutely terrible place please avoid at all costs. I brought my not breathing dog here and after they were not able to bring him back they kindly told me I didn't owe anything and it's ok, since they couldn't save him through CPR. However, I get a call 2 days later saying we actually owed for CPR. When I asked how much is was for CPR and cremation they said $300. I asked what was just the cremation and they said $225. So I paid the cremation price and mentioned that I was told we didn't owe the difference considering the circumstances. The girl said she would ask the manager. Two days later the manager leaves a voicemail on my phone and was directly to the point and rude just asking about the money and free situation and not sorry about my freaking dead dog. He kept insisting we owe and that he'd "compromise" by meeting halfway. Wait! So your staff tries to be kind and you try to take it back bc you're nickel and dime jerk? He then later tried to act sincere and was like I'm actually sorry about your dog I'm trying to help here. Then he gives me attitude bc I got upset. No crap I'm upset my dogs dead and your trying to undue the kindness your staff gave. Then he realizes that I didn't sign anything and he has no ground to stand on after I mentioned it. Realizing that and reviewing that indeed his staff did not discuss any charges he then decides that we don't owe. Holy crap. Wow. I've never been more offended and treated like that during a difficult time. This is clearly a business that is in it for the money and not taking care of animals. I would have gladly paid and actually offered to pay the day I brought my dog in. It's not my fault your staff has heart while you don't you careless and heartless owner. Every visit I've made here with my cats has been a good one (on their part, anyway. some visits had sad endings by no fault of theirs.) One in particular is when I took in a cat that wandered into my yard. I named her Mocha. She was old old OLD, and had tons of medical problems. The last vet I had taken her to didn't seem to care in the least, and mis-aged her by TEN YEARS. Her health was just not right, so I went to a different vet (WCVMC) (my parents offered to help pay. I didn't have a job yet out of college.) When I took her here, I knew possibly she wasn't going to be coming back home. I cried the whole way there. I knew she was blind, deaf, had movement problems, and something wrong with her eating/drinking. I loved her like I had had her for years, even though it was only about two weeks. I was ready to help her any way I could if it meant she could live with a decent quality of life. When they came back into the room with the results that night, they told me she was deaf, blind, had ataxia, a heart murmur, and renal failure. She wasn't going to make it for more than a month at best, and it would not be a joyful one for her. I knew we had to let her go. Dr. Parkman was the vet that was on that night, and she was the kindest, most understanding person. She made the process as caring and loving as humanly possible, and I held Mocha in my arms and told her I loved her right up til the very end. We buried her in our yard, and I keep the pawprint memorial keepsake on my bureau. It was the first time I was ever there for the passing of a pet, and it was SO. HARD. But the staff here made it as caring as possible, and helped so much. They later sent a card in sympathy to my home, which I still keep to this day. I take all of my kitties here now, and I certainly recommend them. Wholeheartedly. Read Less

While I have had positive experiences at WCVMC before, my emergency visit to them this Sunday is why I am writing. I had to take my 5 year old cat in because she was not eating or drinking water for several days, and it was a clear problem. The wait was not long, but once she was examined they presented us with an itemized cost break down of our options, all of them were extremely expensive even for basic things such as administering pepcid to settle her stomach. I explained that payment would be an issue (we just had a large car repair and I was tight on cash) and I asked if there was a way to be billed and pay later that month or in installments once I was paid. I was told no. They asked me to apply for Care Credit, due to my student loan debts I was denied despite having good credit, and the Vet office told me there was nothing they could do. An overnight visit with basic antibiotics was running $1500, so I had them do what they could and took her home. It was still $600 and I used all of my savings. The problem here is that she was misdiagnosed. My cat was put down this morning by another vet who was kind enough to take my case without payment today on the promise that I would pay next week. She was able to be treated humanely for her congenital heart failure and was put down peacefully and with such compassion. I was sent home on Sunday without a diagnosis, told that she was probably just nauseous. This doctor noted that in her X-Ray her heart looked a little large, but it was probably nothing. Unfortunately this is what killed her, and I could have saved both time and money and my cat suffering through the night trying to breath with fluid filling her lungs had I been treated better. Like I said, I've had positive experiences at this Vet Hospital before, they treated my family dog 5 years ago in the middle of the night and helped care for him straight through to euthanasia but their unwillingness to help a clearly distressed animal because I was not able to financially provide today really turned my stomach. I hope they will look at cats with similar symptoms a little slower in the future. Read Less

I would never recommend this clinic to anyone especially cats owners. My purebred cat was prescribed the wrong dose of antibiotic- 15 days instead of recommended 3-5. We actually question the dose, and were reassured that it was appropriate. By the day 9 my cat got really ill. I stopped antibiotic and took the cat back for recheck. The cat was given fluids and sent back home. Two hours later he developed bloody hourly stools. I called the clinic back, and the receptionist Nancy told me that we had to take the cat to U Penn " because they wrote the whole book on cats" ! All my requests to talk to a vet were declined. Basically we were refused care on Saturday evening. My cat spent two days in Hope hospital emergency, and required two more visits to regular vet for special diet, fluids, and vitamins. Altogether post- West Chester care cost us around $1300. We though we could loose our great friend. The West Chester practice manager called me. I asked him to return the money for our two last visits to his hospital, because of harmful care provided. He said that he will look into the case, and I have never heard back from him. Remember this people did not write and apparently read any books on cats. Don't go there! Read Less

Misdiagnosed my two cats and killed them via an inappropriate treatment regimen. Bacterial infection was not picked up, one cat was given steroids, accelerated the infection, spread it to my other cat, and it eventually killed them both. They also charged an insane amount of money for the care of these two cats, I believe the final tally of our bills was over $9000. They literally profited from their malpractice. They also assured us they would do full postmortems and find what happened at their own expense, but they didn't do anything. In the few years since these events, I've been to several other vets. None of them recommend these guys for emergency care. That's rather telling. Thanks for killing my two cats. Here's one of their final pictures together. Read Less

Our regular vet was closed as it was Sunday, so I called West Chester Vet Medical Center. Everyone we encountered was wonderful! They took such good care of us through what was a very difficult process. Even though they were very busy the day we came in, they took us back to a room right away. All of the staff was amazing. They explained everything as it was happening, and were very attentive. The facility itself is very clean and bright. I've been taking my cats here for about 15 years and have never had a bad thing to say. We've been seeing Dr. Humphries (and Marissa) for as long as I can remember and they always treat my cats as if they know them/see them on a daily basis, even though it's really more like every 6-12 months. Recently my cat Gizmo's health had been declining and Dr. Humphries did all he could to help him feel better, gain weight, prolong his life all while ensuring his quality of life was the best it could be. When we exhausted all possibilities and his health continued to decline, Dr. Paine helped me make the most excruciatingly painful decision to say goodbye to my buddy and constant companion. He was so caring, thoughtful, and let me have all the time I wanted/needed to say goodbye. Although it was a horrible day for us, my husband and I were very impressed with Dr. Paine's 'bedside manner' and the way in which he responded to our situation. I can't say enough wonderful things about this practice and it's doctors, especially Dr. Paine. On Memorial Day, my cat Roxy tore her ACL. I took her here and the staff was amazing. Dr. Paine treated her as if she was his own, and Roxy felt very comfortable with him. At our follow up, he had remembered every thing we had discussed a month prior as if Roxy were his only patient. What I truly appreciated about this experience was the financial honesty. Granted, I'd pay anything to save my animals life, but I was well informed of my options by Dr. Paine. Also, my pit bull, Hannah, was treated equally as well here. No breed discrimination, no fear from the staff. Hannah had ingested something that would have killed her had we waited 5 more minutes to arrive. The price was very reasonable for all the treatment she had and the next day when we picked her up, she was giving the staff "kisses" and wagging her tail even though she was still recovering and not feeling well. I would recommend this veterinary practice. They have taken such good care of my pets, and even in both of our emergency visits, the fees were not astronomical. Dr. Paine was a really great doctor and he's now my cats permanent vet. Read Less

Both times I have gone here, I was very impressed. I took my 5 year old, Cattle Dog rescue, Brielle to their ER for minor issues. Brielle has many trust issues from being heavily abused prior to our adopting her. She loves me and tolerates everyone else. If she feels afraid or threatened she can be very nasty, all in her attempt to get you to leave her alone, not to actually hurt you. Both Vets that had the pleasure of treating Brielle (note the sarcasm) did an amazing job. Of course she lunged and put up a fight when they came too close for her liking. However, since I fully disclosed to the staff and the Vets her track record of terrible behavior, they knew exactly how to deal with her. She was able to receive treatment and nobody got nipped, which is all I can ask for. On top of everything, the staff and the Vets were all so kind and supportive and not once was I made to feel bad for Brielle's inability to behave. On a cold January morning I went to take my Labrador for her morning walk. She was laying on the floor ( not her normal excited self at 3 years old) She weighs 85 pounds (all muscle, no fat) so I called my closest friend who was over in minutes, She said we need to carry her to the car, and drive her to West Chester Emergency Animal Hospital, NOW! Great decision. Dr. Kimberly Bowers treated her within minutes of our arrival. Did all the test (Heart worm, Lyme, etc. -Chem 17 & CBC. After reviewing the results thought it may be Lyme (always in the woods). She was in discomfort & Lethargic so the first shot was Morphine 2 mg. Said she could start her on Doxycycline Tabs (4 daily for $70) or give her an IV vial for $210 (Bailey is my everything!) so she gave her the IV and said she will spend the night, and we will see if she improves in the next couple of days. I arrived about 3 PM the next day expecting a little improvement, meeting first with Scott Humphries DVM who explained everything in clear detail. I asked to see her, to my delight she came barreling in with big kisses ready to go home, so she did! The care & attention to detail from the entire staff couldn't have been better. She was there once before after a raccoon bit her tail and they patched her up, put a cool tiger stretch type 9" bandage over the wound of her constantly wagging tail which she never touched ( didn't need to wear a lamp shade) I was so impressed with the Doctors, supporting staff, and facility I called my Veterinarian of three years to tell them I appreciated all they did for my girl but it was a 24 mile round trip which is just too far. 1st glance, one would think it would be an expensive trip to an emergency vet @ 2AM---not true. Very reasonable fees, and awesome service. I stated before people usually treat our dogs differently because they are pit bulls, and mostly categorized under "violent, mean breeds". Therefore, most vet clinics i go to, either the drs or staff are scared of them or just treat them differently. This Dr and his assistant were better than I could ask for. Gentle and caring with our dog, and answered any and all questions I had about my dogs allergic reaction. I can't say enough wonderful things about this office - from the front desk staff, to the vet techs, to the doctors we've seen here - they're all truly exceptional.  Our first visit was unfortunately for an emergency, and this was the clinic that was recommended to us for after-hours care.  I was visiting my parents from out of town and my dog was in gastrointestinal distress.  The vet was calm, reassuring, and explained all our options in detail.  There was no pressure to do anything extraordinary or costly - she just worked to make me feel comfortable with our treatment decisions (ultimately we chose the least invasive treatment plan).  My dog recovered within a week, and unfortunately needed to make one more return trip for an antibiotic, but the team here called almost daily to see how he was progressing and asked if we needed anything.  I truly felt they cared for my dog's - and my - comfort.  My husband and I found out we were being transferred to Europe and couldn't take our dog with us immediately, so he needed to make a month stop over with my parents in the summer of 2015.  There is extensive paperwork and exams required when traveling overseas with a dog, and West Chester Medical Clinic was where we knew wanted to take our dog to handle his care while he was in Philly.  Again, the service here was truly fabulous.  They walked us through every step required for the paperwork, administered the vaccines with the utmost care, and ensured he was fully prepared to travel.  Dr. Gonzales is a gem of a vet - and his tech team is equally as amazing.  They even called my parents after we traveled to Germany to make sure he made it OK!  WOW!  I only wish I loved my regular vet in Seattle as much as I love this clinic - and I only hope we can find a vet as wonderful here in Berlin - otherwise I may have to fly him back just for care with this clinic. As a concerned owner I left her there and was upset all day wondering if my dog was ok. I called multiple times throughout the day to check in on her to see how she was doing and they had no answers for me. I finally get a call back at 8pm telling me to pick my dog up at 9pm. I arrived to find out my dog had a stomach bug and all she needed was antibiotics and would be better in a few days. When they brought my dog out the vet tech told me I was good to go and gave me no medicine for her, claiming my dog did not need them but would go in the back and check to see if the doctor left and meds for her and behold, there they were, 10 days worth of meds. After just short of $1,000 later my dog walked out of there with a stomach bug and will be fine in a few days. I am thankful that my dog was not seriously ill, but that will be my last visit to this vet. Read Less

I have four animals, all seniors (12 years and up), all of whom have received top care from the doctors, nurses and staff in this practice. What I love about this practice is that their ER staff is just as top notch as their daytime staff (in my experience, not something you'll find in every emergency hospital). From reception to the waiting room to the vet techs and nurses through the doctors, you'll get top care for your pet here. Sometimes the waiting room can be chaotic but unfortunately that's more the owners versus the staff. They've separated the cat and dog areas so that has certainly helped (now if parents could stop their kids from randomly running over to sick pets, that would be grand, but not something the staff can contain as much as the parents!).I've taken all four of my pets for routine visits during normal business hours as well as those unfortunate after-hours visits. Every time my pets (and I) were treated with empathy and compassion. As far as cost, you get what you pay for with this practice. In the heat of the moment, I lost it while getting a quote and the vet took my concerns very seriously. After-the-fact, I realized I was just extremely upset that my dog was sick, and the vet took my lash-out calmly and rationally. Everyone is still wagging or meowing and all in all enjoying life not only due to the fact they run our house, but also due to the healthcare this practice has provided. Read Less

Like others, I too wish there were a 6th star to give them.  THE BEST VETS AROUND...I know, I've tried a number before settling in with Dr. Marc Daniel at WCVMC.  They are super knowledgeable, have 24 hour emergency care, full service practice and have successfully cared for my FIV+ Polydactyl cat.  I was actually REFERRED TO THIS PLACE BY ANOTHER VET if that tells you anything.  I think the two top practices in the entire area are WCMC and Metropolitan (further north).  They are amazing with my cat and the Vet Techs are really good here.  This place gets it - excellent care, good "bedside manner" with owners, very educational...I can't truly express how highly I regard them. I totally trust them with the health/care of my beloved Top Cat. Read Less

I took my newly adopted cat here one time because it is close to where I live and was on the list of vets I was given from the cat adoption shelter.  The facility is very large and nice, and I was hoping to use them for my regular cat vet.  However I came away less than impressed with the quality of services for cats.  My first impression in the waiting room was that the place may be more oriented to dogs as this is an area with many dog owners and the number of large dogs in the waiting room far outnumbered the cats.  Unfortunately this was my first issue with the place, as although there's lots of space in the waiting room, it's hard to get entirely away from the big barking dogs.  My cat doesn't like dogs and was getting upset. When we finally got into the examining room, a female vet and a vet tech did the exam on my cat.  It was adequate but the vet seemed in a rush to get done and I was not impressed with her knowledge of cats.  I asked about feeding my cat wet food because I have read that this is important in preventing diabetes and kidney disease.  I have had cats in the past who had both these conditions and I'm trying to avoid another coming down with it.  The  vet more or less brushed me off and suggested my cat should keep eating an awful cellulose-filled "diet" dry kibble because he needed to lose weight.  I read the label on the stuff and it looked  completely lacking in nutrients for cats, but doctor didn't seem to have a clue or want to discuss.  She also tried to get me to buy a whole year's worth of Revolution, an expensive flea/ earmite medication.  An indoor cat who does not go outside and doesn't have any other pets in the house shouldn't need to be on a flea killing drug for an entire year - the three months worth that I chose to buy should be sufficient. At the end, when I got the bill, I wouldn't say it was outrageous but it was on the high side even when the cost of the free office call (due to partnership with the cat shelter) was deducted, and especially considering how short and rushed the visit was.  As for the vet tech, I'm not sure if she was new on the job but she seemed a little unsure of what she was doing with my cat and I had to ask her to show me basic things like how to put a medication that I'd never used before on my cat. The reception staff are really a mixed bag here - the one who took care of my bill was polite but the ones I got when I called to make the appointment, do some follow-up and later to inquire about having a pet dental done, were abrupt and this side of rude.  After this experience I learned there was a specialized cats-only hospital a few miles up the road near downtown West Chester, so I have been taking my cats there instead to benefit from docs with a much better knowledge of cat health issues (not to mention no dogs in the waiting room and much friendlier reception staff). They are expensive - be prepared to pay about twice the cost of surgeries at comparable vets. I've been taking my dog here for three years and have always been highly impressed with the level of care and condition of the facilities. However, WCVMC will no longer work with on-line pharmacies. Previously they would phone in prescriptions to 1-800-Petmeds but no longer will do so. I understand there are some concerns with compliance but they always offered this service in the past. I wonder if this has anything to do with the new pharmacy they opened in house? Either way, I will be moving on to a new vet. Read Less

west chester veterinary hospital  is a very, very bad place. the people that run this place, know and understand how much you love your little pets and they use this knowledge to fleece you. the primary motivation of any veterinary hospital, should be the health of its' patients and also to inform and console the people who bring their pets to the hospital, looking for help. the staff at (wcvh) are, at best, rip-off artists, of the first magnitude! they are at their best, if you take your pet to them, as an emergency patient. they know that you, as the owner, have a sick "family member" little pet with you and that you will do "anything" to get help and money will be no object, in seeking that help. they know, that in a time of stress, people will drop their guard and the only thing on their mind, is getting medical help for their pet. they know that, when a pet becomes sick and is taken out of the home, that the  family is, in most cases, very upset and the members of that family all become aware of the empty place created by the absence of that family member. they, the family, will do anything to restore their happy family. as i've said, under these conditions, the staff at (wcvh) will then go to work, doing anything and everything, to run-up the the bill. their prime concern is not your pet, but how far they can run-up your bill! i took my beautiful, very sweet cat, midnight, a (6) year old, male black cat, the (47) long miles, from northeast philadelphia, out to west chester, for what i thought would be help for a breathing problem. as i couldn't get out there, during daytime hours, i had to go after (7) pm. i might also make clear, that midnight had a ''wheezing'' problem for many months. i had to live with his condition, going untreated for so long, because i am very sick myself and have trouble getting around. a second reason for the delay in getting him to medical help, is very simple, couldn't catch him! all of my (7) cats are outside cats and midnight has been the last, to let me touch and pet him. he is big and has claws and is very difficult to try to put him into a carrier. in my weakened condition, it was all but impossible to do this. i had to throw caution to the wind and to fight with him, to get him into the extra large carrier. i almost had a heart attack myself!i was very upset and worried for him. the entire (1) hour drive, i kept pulling over to make sure he was still breathing. at long last, we arrived. it was all i could do, to get him into the building. i had to put him down, several times, before i got to the door.to make a long story a little shorter, they took him into the back and after a hour wait, a woman came out to ask if i could pay for his treatment! i told her that i have an account there and have had several surgeries performed on (2) of my other cats and eye treatments for my little toy poodle, ginny. i told her that i could pay for midnights' care. after another hour, a really ''goofy'' young girl came into the room, with a white sheet of paper and sat next to me. not one word about the condition of midnight! to that point in time, they had taken xrays and had given him ''breathing'' treatments and said it would be better, if he stayed, for the night. she told me, that the treatment, thus far, came to ($1,498) and that i had to pay that amount, right then!!!! i asked for a diagnoses of his condition and was told they needed to do more testing. i, of course, protested this absurd amount of and told her to take another look at her numbers. she came back, a few moments later and told me, that if i didn't want midnight to have oxygen, through the night, the bill would be ($985)!!!!!! i gave her $500 in cash, as a deposit and made the long trip home.early the next day, a nurse called to tell me that midnight needed more treatment and i agreed, still not knowing what the problem was!! but!!! the nurse told me, that before ''anything else'' would be done, to help midnight, i would have to drive back out there and give them another deposit!!!!!!!! no money, no care!!! i went right out there, paid a total of $719 and brought my dear little boy home. as it turned out, midnight had a low-grade bacterial infection and it was quickly treated with $10 worth of antibiotics and within (2) days, he was fine. i knew what was wrong, before taking him out there, but i wanted to be sure. i told the so-called doctor, who brought midnight out, what the problem was and he gave me the meds. he also told me that midnight was ''asthmatic'' and i said, that his present condition does not mean that he has ''feline asthma'', there is a very big difference. this all boils down to a simple examination, by a good, caring vet and the right diagnoses, with meds and your little loved family member will be back home. stay away from this place. remember, all vet places change with time, i had (6) good years there, before it went bad. their actions can cost your little pet its life. Read Less

Started going here when I had my, at the time 8 year old boxer have a horrific seizure and heart murmur. Since it was late at night they were the only vet open around me. They took great care of him and extended his life another two years, which I’m eternally grateful for. Once he died I had him cremated here, and they went above and beyond for me. I received a mailed written letter (how often do you get those anymore), of them expressing their condolences towards my dog. Also made a stone with his paw for me to keep forever. And now with my new pup they made going to to the vet for him the greatest thing in the world since they’re all obsessed with him lol.

The employee who refused to release my dog, she needs some training on how to deal with distraught owners. She stood in the waiting room in front of people waiting with their pets and said, if I bring him out here he may attack one of these animals sitting here. She seems to dislike Pitbulls and thinks they are unsafe. She was angry and disrespectful to me. That is bad for business. Read Less

WCVMC helped save our dogs' lives after they accidentally ate dark chocolate. We are fortunate to have such an amazing 24-hour emergency clinic so close to home. Everyone there was professional and caring,-- the docs, techs, admins, etc. All top notch. We were given an estimate that included all possible treatments and meds that might be needed, so the final cost was no surprise, and in fact was lower than we expected.

Read Less

Every Vet that I have seen at West Chester has this same level of professionalism, care and compassion.  They always explain the potential cost of service upfront so you can make a fully informed decision on the best course of treatment that is right for your pet.  From my experience with other practices in the past the fee structure is competitive.  The difference or value add that I feel I get from West Chester Veterinary Medical Center is skill, compassion and great customer service.  The entire staff is friendly, helpful and committed to pet health and compassionate care.  I can't say enough good things about Dr. Daniel and Dr. Paine! I wish there were six stars to give, for only five stars just cannot convey how wonderful this clinic is. From the front desk to the vet techs to the veterinarians themselves this is a fabulous animal care facility. I have found that the vets will work as a team if necessary to give your pet the best care, diagnosis, recovery, and highest quality of life possible. The Emergancy clinic that runs during off hours ensures your pet has 24/7 care-- even holidays! My pups see Dr. Daniel as their primary vet, but they are often treated by Drs. Humphries or Parkman. In the overnight hours Dr. Roe is the best, very caring and takes his time with you and your fur baby in your hour of need. Nancy at the front desk is wonderful, you'll often see her during the day as well as in the middle of the night. Six stars... They deserve six stars! Read Less

After a few years we found out our old vet was scared of our Great Dane - our 10 year old kinda slow old man Dane.  So we started coming here - had brought the GD here quite a few years back with a bloat scare late at night.  The only downside is the flooring; he does not like the bare linoleum as he thinks he will slip.  But the staff, vet techs, and Dr Cian are excellent. My cat was extremely ill on Labor Day weekend. I rushed her to West Chester Veterinary Medical Center and I saw Dr. Paine. He was so nice, and when they took her back for X rays they thought they saw a string wrapped her insides. I was devastated and the bill killed me. Dr Paine was able to help me out tremendously so they could help my Gracie girl. After his amazing surgery, the staff let me visit as much as I wanted. If it weren't for Dr Paine and the staff I would have lost Gracie. I love them and would absolutely recommend them to anyone who needs a vet, or an emergency vet.

In fact, they asked she come back for follow up care and regular visits! My prayers have been answered! Read Less

Most of all, I was able to bring my dog in, and have the Dr. thoroughly look him over, and treat me and him with respect. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Recommended---A + !! I took my dog in because she was going to bathroom often and looked abnormal. The doctor required they run x-rays and my bill would be around $300 (which is still high). On these x-rays they claimed they seen something that needed to be taken care of immediately and she needed to be left there all day for treatment.
