Midway through April one of my rats suffered a horrific injury inflicted by another one of my rats during a scuffle. It was 4:00am. In a panic, I googled emergency exotic vet, and OSVS was the only vet open within a 50 mile radius. I gave them a call, and they told me to come in right away.
When I arrived, someone came out to take my poor little guy, Peanut, into the emergency vet clinic, as they are not allowing in pet owners due to COVID (understandably). They gave him emergency care including fluids and a painkiller while they waited for the exotics vet, Dr. Lucy Spelman, to come in. They called with frequent updates and then gave an estimate of care and surgery costs. They helped me keep fees low as I am a college student and they wanted to help make the care affordable for me.
Peanut had an emergency neuter done and was back at home within ten hours of the incident. He healed wonderfully, and was back in action within the week. He showed no signs of pain while he was back, and I cannot emphasize enough how well the site of the surgery healed. He didn't have any complications and it was as if the accident never happened.
The staff were all so kind, understanding, and helpful. They really cared about Peanut's wellbeing, which speaks volumes as he is just a little rat, and many times you find other vets not understanding how much even the smallest of pets mean to us.
OSVS truly saved Peanut's life. I am so grateful to them.
I will be returning to OSVS for care for my rats and other pets in the future.

I also wanted to address a lot of other reviews I am seeing regarding cost, etc., and share my personal experience with OSVS. While yes, it is relatively costly to send your pet here, you are paying for EMERGENCY care. I see a lot of reviews complaining about inflated costs, but think about it in terms of us humans- going to the ER vs. your physician is a big difference in expenses. When you send your pet in for emergency care you are paying for round the clock monitoring, treatment, etc., vs. at a normal vet's office would be the exam and procedure fee. This is expected.
Additionally, I see a lot of reviews saying they prioritize money over pet care. I had to pay half of the bill before treatment and the other half before I picked Peanut up. As a college student, I had no idea how I would afford any of it, but the holy silver lining was: They accept CareCredit. The staff really do care about your pets well being, but everything with emergency care has a cost associated with it, there are a lot of staff working to keep your pet healthy and comfortable, medicines have a cost, procedures have a cost, all of it. They cannot send you off with your pet if you haven't covered any of the costs, it just doesn't make sense. This is where things differ from human care. They are seeing and treating a lot of animals at once, it's very difficult.

The only ONE thing I was a little freaked out by was that when I picked up Peanut, he still had blood in his fur from the initial incident. I wasn't outraged by it or anything, all it took was a warm washcloth and it was off, but it made him look very disheveled when I got him. His surgery site was free of any blood though, it was completely clean. He was completely fine, but seeing him like that was a little shocking LOL. Read Less
