Care For Animals

Warwick, Rhode Island
General Info
Care for Animals is a low cost primary care animal hospital. This hospital was started in July, 2009; its primary purpose is to serve the most vulnerable animals in RI. Medical efforts are directed at four groups of animals: homeless pets, animals living in animal shelters or with rescue groups, feral animals and animals belonging to low income pet owners.
PAAWS RI was formed in December 2011 to address an unmet need within Rhode Island’s companion animal population. The need to form this nonprofit was highlighted through the work of the low cost animal hospital, Care For Animals. As Care For Animals sought to provide medical care to shelter animals, feral cats and to cats and dogs owned by low income pet owners, it became clear that some animals were not getting adequate – even minimal – care, because of budgetary shortfalls.
Care for Animals interfaced with many RI nonprofits that distribute funds to animals in need. But these limited, combined donations were still not enough to provide animals with adequate medical care, surgical services and rehabilitation. PAAWS RI was formed to meet this need. All funding will be directed to help feral cats, homeless dogs and cats in need of medical care and rehabilitation before they can be adopted and animals belonging to impoverished pet owners.

I dare you to call, ask a question, call back and ask the same question to a different person, see if you get the same answer. Does anyone know what they are doing here? Too nervous to have my pets seen in a place that is so scattered. Client Response: I only tried to make an appointment. I asked the receptionist about pricing for basic veterinary care and also inquired about dental work. I was placed on hold numerous times. When I started to show annoyance, she apologizes over and over that she is new and was left by herself her second week there. I gave it a few days, called back to schedule the dental, then was informed the price I was originally given, not right and was $150 more! What is going on????? Bad business. Read Less

Will not bring my cat there EVER again. Beware, pet owners, when going here.1. Get clarification on ALL costs before you make the travel/journey to the place. I asked only for a rabies vaccination - told on the phone the appt would $16 for the vaccination.  When I arrive, I tell the receptionist I was there for the rabies vaccination, and did not need a wellness check.  There was no response to indicate it was a requirement to have a wellness check in addition to the vaccination.  The vet fought with me about the vaccination only request.  The more they pushed back, the more it made me think that they are only out for the $.  I should have been told on the phone or upon arrival that the wellness check was mandatory, rather than making me think that my request for just the vaccination was what was going to happen.2. Hold this place accountable to their scheduled appointment times (unless you want to wait almost an hour from your appt time to be seen).  Not once was I informed as I waited that 50 minutes that their appts were running behind schedule; I had to go up and ask myself.  50 minute delay without explanation is ridiculous.3.  Be ready for negative attitude.  While I waited for 50 minutes, I witnessed one of the vets treating the staff at reception with an impatient, condescending attitude.  And the other vet who eventually saw my cat refused to respond to me after I stood up for myself with the cost issue.Bad service - and this on top of my cat's paperwork disappearing after last year's news of a former staff member kidnapping cats and taking paperwork of adoptions.  I guess they never got my paperwork back from the kidnapper, God only knows what data breach issues that entails. I took my corgi/Eskimo mix for a physical exam and vaccines today.  He has a bad attitude and can be aggressive toward strangers and other animals. I explained this to the receptionist when I made his appointment.  They recommend I come in early and put him under anesthesia to get a full work up.  Having issues with him and other vets/groomers/people in the past, I agreed.  I showed up 30 minutes early just to make sure I was able to calm him.  I checked in fully expecting to wait until my appointment time in 30 minutes, however, Dr. Rauch greeted us promptly.  She invited me into the exam room to discuss his temperament/ past experiences with aggression.  She stated she wanted to get a feel for how he behaves to see if he actually needs to be put under.  After talking with me and interacting with my dog, she decided anesthesia wouldn't be necessary.  She was very conscious of the dangers of the anesthetic, as well as the cost.  I appreciate that she took the extra time to evaluate him and didn't just put him under because it's extra money.  She was able to do a full exam, vaccinate, and draw blood for heart worm testing. She spent time with us, answered all my questions, and made really helpful suggestions regarding his aggression.  I was extremely satisfied with the visit today.  You can tell Dr. Rauch really cares about her fluffy clients.  The staff was very friendly and attentive, even as it started to get busy.  I switched from a vet that was 3x more expensive and half as attentive, caring, and knowledgeable as they are! I will be switching my other 2 dogs to them ASAP! It was refreshing to find a facility that puts the animals well being over the money. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a compassionate, thorough, and knowledgeable veterinarian. Read Less

I'm distraught saying this, but this place is not the caring place that it once was. It is true, it's impossible to get through on the phone. Once you do finally get through, the ladies on the other end do not know how to answer questions and constantly put you on hold to get you an answer. No one seems to be on the same page. The whole staff has changed and the new staff seems to have no veterinary background, which is a bit terrifying. I witnessed one lady have an emergency with her small dog, and because of finances, they refused to do anything to help this poor dog. Instead they suggested she go to Ocean State which is more expensive and told her they don't take walk ins. I thought helping people get funding was their speciality and their name is "Care for Animals"? I assume no longer. Prices are still decent. My father has been a client for almost 3 years and I assist him with bringing in his cats, it's unfortunate that we are in search of a new place. Read Less

UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO OWNERS 2ND RESPONSE: IT'S PRETTY PETTY TO RESPOND TO THE TIME..... I understand as the owner you take this personal but you should see this as an opportunity to train and retrain the techs to be compassionate , I need to say that the doctors there are good but the techs they set the tone , and I hope you realize as the owner this back and forth is pathetic ....but i understand this can be emotional for you UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO OWNER'S RESPONSE: Yes I was upset but I have a clear account of the situation and the tech did NOT say that to me if she did why would I wait "7" mins { its pretty funny how you timed me but couldn't help me } and it is true that I left without saying anything because nobody cared about me being there so why would I say I was leaving....We can go back and forth, I was there were you? Please do not make up statements that are not true and I know your not an emergency facility, I went there because I live so close, I thought "CARE" for animals would have compassion Went to care for animals with my dog who was dying, did not have an appt because I could not schedule when she would die, the girl at the desk asked what I wanted I told her I think my dog is dying can someone check her out , I don't want her in pain, she went to talk to someone else who looked at me ,and could clearly see my dog did not look well, proceeded to stop at the desk to show an employee how to do something than came to me and said ,"What is the problem" i told her and said isn't her tongue hanging out and not moving, she said a little , like I was annoying her, she than asked if I had been there( I have but have not been for while and for some reason that was important she than said it will be a while, I waited for 10 mins and left to go to another vet, another person that was waiting for her appt suggested I should leave because she needs to be seen ASAP...for a place that "CARES" for animals they failed. I came to Care For Animals and Paaws RI - hopeful to find my mom a surprise cat for her birthday. Unfortunately I couldn't adopt a cat because we are moving to a woodsy area, and we are afraid of it getting loose. I had felt so bad I couldn't take one home ( or all! ) ... so I asked to volunteer for them. I have a job of different schedules - so I stop by when I can and spend hours with the cats. Each time I have come to visit, I am greeted by smiles from both the staff AND the cats! I know each of the staff that work there care for the animals that come through the care room and the shelter. The staff are working their shifts hard and dedicated to help provide the animals a safe place to be and to find a happy home to forever live in. There is no other place I would recommend that truly cares for each animal that come and go from here! Plus ... call them to meet with someone to see all the cats! While it is tough to get an appointment - mostly because it is hard to call and speak to a receptionist - I really like it here. If you call for anything, plan to call a few times (especially in the morning) and to be put on hold or expect to leave a message/maybe call again. This is the only reason why I can't give it 5 stars. Care For Animals does not have a large staff and try their best working with what they have - and they do a great job. I really feel safe bringing my three cats here. The facility is small as is the parking lot, and the wait can be a little long, but worth it. I feel as though everyone who works here really is passionate about the wellbeing of the animals and aren't focused on how much money they're making. There are free roaming cats in the office - and adoptable cats as well! The female vet - I am unsure of her name - is wonderful. She is knowledgeable, efficient, provides great advice and is kind. She explains things in a way that is understandable and never makes you feel bad about anything. She also does not over vaccinate, which I appreciate. The prices are the best around as well. I strongly recommend this facility! Read Less

I really wish I can say good things about Care For Animals but my experience left me totally dissatisfied. First of all, let me just say I am very happy that they offer affordable veterinary care and  that they scale according to income. I'm sure they do amazing things for the community and animal welfare. However, I will never go there again. It was nearly impossible to even get an appointment. Every time I called the line was busy. It was by some miracle that I even got a receptionist.  Then though I got someone on the phone, I had to wait weeks to get seen. The office was also very hard to find. It is an old house with limited parking. The location is just messy. Their waiting room is also very small. A lot of people had to either stand or wait outside. I waited for nearly two hours just to see the vet. I will say that the staff are very sweet and didn't try to offer more services for the sake of making money. I didn't feel pressured one bit. However they are severely overbooked and understaffed. A two hour wait with no seating is never acceptable. I hate to say it but I rather pay the extra money and save my time. Read Less

The entire time I was there, the phone rang off the hook with people needing help with their animals, appointments, donations, and volunteers. A couple people even came in with food and supply donations. This place is the epitome of a grassroots effort to improve an issue that plagues our society, feral cats. The main thing I loved was how thorough they were with making sure I was going to give my kitten a good home. I feel that too many shelters just let anyone walk away with an animal but here they actually care. I've read that some people are actually mad you have to fill out an application or that they were denied. I find this ridiculous because they aren't doing it to anger anyone but to protect the cats they have and for that I applaud them. I don't ever see myself adopting anywhere else. Read Less

The thing that grinded my gears the most: I specifically told them more than once about my cat's excessive drinking and urinating, as well as drooling, fatigue, and a very low weight--all of which are symptoms of renal failure. I was ignored the first time, and then written off the second. Found out weeks later at a new vet's office that she was near death due to kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. This is a great and caring clinic. I don't think I could afford to take care of my two rescued feral kittens if it wasn't for the kindness and generosity of this place. Since they aren't making a large profit off of their customers, you have to give them a break on a fews things. One being that even if you have an appointment scheduled, chances are you are going to wait for a while, sometimes over an hour. So its good to keep this in mind if you have other appointments/work. Its worth the wait because the vet is very attentive, thorough and gives you/your furry friends  their undivided attention. The other being, the front desk is running the show. Between a ton of phone calls, customers trying to get their attention, vet assistants needing things for the vet, dogs barking in the background, these ladies are really trying their best and you have to give them that. Bottom line: They are affordable, accommodating, and dependable. Read Less

I really needed affordable care for my cats, so I asked around and someone suggested CFA. They were able to see me fairly quickly and the prices were very reasonable. They are also very willing to work with people that have financial difficulty. At first I was really happy with the clinic for being so understanding about my financial situation, and later helping me with an emergency when I wasn't sure that I could cover all of the cost upfront. However, they seem to be so overwhelmed with furry patients that the feelings of pet parents may occasionally escape them.I was really emotional the day that my cat got omitted to surgrey: (1) Because my cats are like my children, and (2) I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to come up with the money for the procedure. I was told that my cat's surgery would be done sometime around 5pm and that I would get a call when he was done. After waiting for hours by my phone in tears, I decided to give them a ring around 4:50pm to check in since I knew they closed at 5. No answer. Tried a few more times. No answer. I sent them a message on Facebook and an email, hoping that maybe one the of managers would check it after hours. I finally got a call several hours later, but instead of being reassured that my cat was doing fine, I got a lecture about how I must be ungrateful and not understand what they do there, and how they were doing me a favor that they didn't have to do. Excuse me? I'm sorry for being a broke student that genuinely cares about my cats. I just wanted reassurance that he was okay. Apparently being low-cost means that the feelings of pet parents don't matter. I am very grateful for what they did for me, but I will definitely be using a different vet as soon as I'm done with school and can afford it.But you know what? I'll deal with the bad customer service if I need to. The vets here are really great and know what they're doing, and you CANNOT beat the prices or how they go out of their way to work with you. They are really a lifesaver for pet owners that are having a rough time financially. Read Less

Care For Animals

Warwick, Rhode Island
(45)
2944 Post Road
Warwick Rhode Island 02886

The main thing I loved was how thorough they were with making sure I was going to give my kitten a good home. I feel that too many shelters just let anyone walk away with an animal but here they actually care. I've read that some people are actually mad you have to fill out an application or that they were denied.
