No option for negative stars. So here is my review, (sorry it's long) a week ago we went to Big River to have a mass removed from our dogs neck. We had been recommended by our vet as they didn't have a surgeon on staff. We called made the consult appointment for Monday, that went well. They told us Wednesday of that week they could take him in. Awesome! The mass was located on the back of his neck and it kept getting infected (prior to surgery) we knew it needed to be removed and we had been so happy they would do the surgery so quickly. The day of surgery we dropped him off and were told to call by 1:00 for an update and/or to pick him up. At 1:00 pm called and he was ready for pick up. Fabulous! We went to pick him up (COVID so only one person could go in) no problem went in to get him and to go through the discharge paperwork. Now again, this mass was located behind his head, on his neck... so while going through the paperwork I asked anything we can do to to protect the area.. was told no, we can't use dressings or a cone and to try a child's onesie.. didn't make sense as to the location a onesie wouldn't offer any protection... but okay we are not vets and going to do that... nope, didn't work. Called Thursday worried nothing to protect the area worried about infection and him getting at it... told nope we don't give antibiotics for "minor surgery" Fast forward to 1:00am Saturday morning (day 3, post surgery) dog won't settle, area looks infected so called ocean state. Told us to come right in. (They were amazing)! Area was infected so gave us antibiotics and a middle anxiety pill to keep him settled. Now Big River never called and or emailed to check up... odd to me.. but okay. Sent an email to them Friday night( prior to ocean state) thinking they are open Saturday... (they are closed on weekends) Sunday after ocean state visit at the ass crack of dawn sent another email, stating we took him to ocean state Saturday and now looks like a suture is open and added a photo of the area asking to be called Monday morning. Now, for sake of argument to naysayers nothing was protecting this area! This dog never left our side and slept in bed with us to try and make sure he never got at it... Obviously we slept at some point in the mist of four days and he did... anyhoo to get back on track.. sent email expecting to get a call first thing Monday after they read and saw the photo.. and I asked for a call... That would be a big negative! I received this... "Antibiotics are not routinely given after surgery unless the site is contaminated. Most incisions don't get infected. We never know which dogs or cats will need anti-anxiety medications unless the owner tells us in advance or lets us know after the surgery that the pet won't stay calm." YUP!!! Nothing on the photo, no phone call saying bring him in... NOTHING!!! So I call, again explain to the receptionist what is going on.. she said oh we have a 3:15 open... okay, um it's 10am... fine we will take it.. I hang up and call Hope Veterinary ( where he typically goes) explained everything! Dr.Mary who is awesome said okay bring him now. She and her staff fixed the area (he needed staples to recluse the area) and gave more antibiotics and saved the freaking day!!!!
It is now a week and a day since the initial surgery. Not one follow up call. Not one check in email. Nothing! I have since received a call and email from Ocean State Veterinary and calls from Hope veterinary! Neither did the surgery but checking in to make sure he is doing okay! Big River are about the $$$$ and nothing else! I would never and I mean never recommend them! Call ocean state! If you need a phenomenal Vet call Hope and ask For Dr. Mary.

I have been dealing with Big River Vet services for years! I love how they treat your animals as part of the family and they really care. The first time I met Dr. Dan was for a second opinion for surgery for my little MinPin Tia. When I came into the front office, I could hear someone talking baby talk in the back room to one of the animals who just had surgery. You could tell he really cared about his patient and wanted to reassure them they were safe. He didn’t know I was in the front hallway so that tells you how sincere and real it was and that it was the natural atmosphere at Big River Vet. Since then, I’ve had many rescue dogs and they have all seen Dr. Dan and his staff. They really care about your animal and your concerns. I would never go anywhere else!

I originally chose Big River because of Dr. Dan's service to our country. It was a good decision. Dr. Dan and the staff are people who are genuine and truly care for animals big and small. My two little furry buddies were in good hands till the very end (cancer, both pets). The doctor and staff showed compassion and empathy to towards me and my pets, especially when things were at their bleakest. For that I will always be grateful.

Found Dr Dan and his staff years ago after being turned off by the bills I was paying at another local Vet clinic. I was so pleased by the compassionate and affordable care that was given to my first Golden Chloe, when I had the wonderful opportunity to became "Mom" to my second Golden I had no hesitation on bringing her in to Big River. No problem getting in for a last minute "sick" visit and Dr Dan always does his best to keep the cost down. Despite the fact that i recently relocated out of Coventry, I will make the drive to Big River because everyone there is top notch.

Took our two doggies to a first visit with Dr. Dan. He did the exam, shots and even took a large skin tag (benign tumor) off our female dogs head. This thing has been on her head for years. We always had to be careful of not hitting it when grooming her because it would bleed. She would make it bleed when she rolled around on the floor or playing. Dr Dan confidently removed it in just a few minutes with zero pain to our dog. Dr Dan is what I call a "one stop shop". He doesn't try to get you to spend money on tests that are not necessary. On a second trip there, to just stop in and pick up my flea control. Stupid me did not even check the hours before arriving and they still got up, unlocked the doors and completed business with me so i did not have to make a return trip and get this, they did it all with a great welcoming attitude. Now that is great customer service. If you're on the fence, trying to make a decision about what vet to see, don't delay. This guy and his staff are really awesome. Thank you for keeping costs low and providing great service.

My Beautiful Lady Grace, whose name epitomized her presence in our lives, was referred to Big River Veterinary during the final months of her physical life.
By the time she exhibited discomfort and although surgery was an option the staff (whom, to this day, I describe as Angels), allowed her final three and half months to remain a dignified and loving, honorable and comfortable time while I adjusted to the remainder of my lifetime becoming without my gracious little side kick.
I will always be grateful for meeting as strong and loving community within the walls of Big River Veterinary Services Office. Their caregiving will always be a model of compassion and empathy within my memories.

This Vet was on a list we received from the Providence Animal Rescue League to get a free check up for our newly adopted dog. We decided to try them out as they were the closest one to us on the list....
This Vet was on a list we received from the Providence Animal Rescue League to get a free check up for our newly adopted dog. We decided to try them out as they were the closest one to us on the list. I would not recommend coming here. The receptionist was rude, and I felt like we were quickly rushed in and out just because we had a free visit and they didn't want to bother with us. The Vet himself spent about 1 minute examining our dog and quickly just said she had a UTI and charged us over $70 for pills. This is their opportunity to impress us and make us want to return for future check ups and needs for the rest of our dogs life, and they failed. We will be bringing our dog to Coventry Animal Hospital now which I highly recommend as it is only 5 minutes down the road away from this place.

our firist visit to Big river was very reassuring. Bruno had an appointment for an ultrasound. The staff was so caring and kind to the dog and to us! Dr. Dan took long to time to discuss the procedure and the results. He also gave us a clear description of Bruno's condition and discussed the possible outcomes. The staff was attentive and kind. All in add, the visit was as pleasant as it could have been. I have already recommended this practice to friends.

Would not recommend this vet to anyone. First visit was today, was rudely greeted by receptionist and told to put my one year old dog on the scale they had next to the front door. After waiting for a half hour for my dogs check up, the receptionist called my dog by his previous name, (changed name upon adoption). This may not matter to some, but it did bother me. Later on in the visit, I asked the doctor and receptionist about the change of color in my dogs tongue, websites say it could be caused by a disease...I got laughed at. They told me they had no idea what it was and said that he may have eaten something that changed his tongue a different color, I don't think so. Not happy with my first visit to this vet with my 1 year old puppy and will not be returning.

Our GSP recently needed TPLO surgery. We made a few surgery consultation appointments with doctors in the RI/MA area who performed TPLO surgery, and we - and sometimes our dog - didn't feel comfortable with any of them. I did some more research, and found Big River Vets. I am so glad I did. Dr. Cardosa and his staff are warm, knowledgeable, and really care about their patients (and their patient's parents). We immediately felt at ease with them and booked a surgery appointment on the spot. The surgery went very well, and our dog was home with us that night. Recovery was hard because our puppy has a ton of energy and wanted to run when she shouldn't have, but Big River Vets were always just a phone call away when she got into trouble. Aside from her wanting to run, the recovery from surgery itself was fine because Dr. Cardosa did an amazing job. We are now 3 months out, and our puppy is doing great. We are so happy that she's back to normal and will be in shape for her summer hiking season. If we ever needed a TPLO surgery again, I would not hesitate to go to Big River Vets. They are the best.

Early Monday morning my cat Gretchen was having a lot of trouble breathing. I have always brought her to a vet closer to home but she wasn't in that morning. I have taken my dog Jasper to Big River since he was a puppy. When I called and explained the situation I was told to bring her right up. She was brought right in and given x-rays and found she was having an asthma attack and was in shock. Dr. Cardosa and the staff immediately started treatment. I was able to bring her home later that evening. I am so happy that she was taken care of so promptly and because of that she is still with me. (Of course she is now driving me crazy because she can't go out for a week.) Dr. Cardosa also saved my Jasper a few months back after he was attacked by another dog that had escaped from his owner. I couldn't ask for a nicer or more kind veterinarian.

The Dr. And staff and just wonderful people. They obviously love animals and are great with them. I brought in my dog who was very sick after not being satisfied with her previous vet. They did all the right tests, CORRECTLY diagnosed her, instead of guessing and got her immediately on the right treatment. I truly believe that they saved her life!

Kindest, most loving vet and staff around! We have been bringing our pets to Big River for over 12 years now. I would never go anywhere else. In emergency situations they have been amazing. They actually drove to my house to help me when my mastiff needed urgent care... They took such great care of my cat when he broke his jaw.... They have comforted me through many losses. I took my 4 year old rabbit Oreo to Big River in August when she had a nasty infection or mite infestation on her ears. The vet was very knowledgeable about small animals and kept trying a couple of different treatments until she was all better. They also worked around my busy schedule and helped me find the most cost-effective ways of obtaining her medications. While they are fairly pricey, I would expect that from a vet that is competent with small animals and other animals that other vets won't treat. I'll definitely be bringing Oreo back if she ever gets sick again!

That would be a big negative! I received this... "Antibiotics are not routinely given after surgery unless the site is contaminated. Most incisions don't get infected. We never know which dogs or cats will need anti-anxiety medications unless the owner tells us in advance or lets us know after the surgery that the pet won't stay calm." YUP!!! Nothing on the photo, no phone call saying bring him in... NOTHING!!! So I call, again explain to the receptionist what is going on.. she said oh we have a 3:15 open... okay, um it's 10am... fine we will take it.. I hang up and call Hope Veterinary ( where he typically goes) explained everything! Dr.Mary who is awesome said okay bring him now. She and her staff fixed the area (he needed staples to recluse the area) and gave more antibiotics and saved the freaking day!!!!
It is now a week and a day since the initial surgery. Not one follow up call. Not one check in email. Nothing! I have since received a call and email from Ocean State Veterinary and calls from Hope veterinary! Neither did the surgery but checking in to make sure he is doing okay! Big River are about the $$$$ and nothing else! I would never and I mean never recommend them! Call ocean state! If you need a phenomenal Vet call Hope and ask For Dr. Mary.

I have been dealing with Big River Vet services for years! I love how they treat your animals as part of the family and they really care. The first time I met Dr. Dan was for a second opinion for surgery for my little MinPin Tia. When I came into the front office, I could hear someone talking baby talk in the back room to one of the animals who just had surgery. You could tell he really cared about his patient and wanted to reassure them they were safe. He didn’t know I was in the front hallway so that tells you how sincere and real it was and that it was the natural atmosphere at Big River Vet. Since then, I’ve had many rescue dogs and they have all seen Dr. Dan and his staff. They really care about your animal and your concerns. I would never go anywhere else!

Found Dr Dan and his staff years ago after being turned off by the bills I was paying at another local Vet clinic. I was so pleased by the compassionate and affordable care that was given to my first Golden Chloe, when I had the wonderful opportunity to became "Mom" to my second Golden I had no hesitation on bringing her in to Big River. No problem getting in for a last minute "sick" visit and Dr Dan always does his best to keep the cost down. Despite the fact that i recently relocated out of Coventry, I will make the drive to Big River because everyone there is top notch.

Took our two doggies to a first visit with Dr. Dan. He did the exam, shots and even took a large skin tag (benign tumor) off our female dogs head. This thing has been on her head for years. We always had to be careful of not hitting it when grooming her because it would bleed. She would make it bleed when she rolled around on the floor or playing. Dr Dan confidently removed it in just a few minutes with zero pain to our dog. Dr Dan is what I call a "one stop shop". He doesn't try to get you to spend money on tests that are not necessary. On a second trip there, to just stop in and pick up my flea control. Stupid me did not even check the hours before arriving and they still got up, unlocked the doors and completed business with me so i did not have to make a return trip and get this, they did it all with a great welcoming attitude. Now that is great customer service. If you're on the fence, trying to make a decision about what vet to see, don't delay. This guy and his staff are really awesome. Thank you for keeping costs low and providing great service.

My Beautiful Lady Grace, whose name epitomized her presence in our lives, was referred to Big River Veterinary during the final months of her physical life.
By the time she exhibited discomfort and although surgery was an option the staff (whom, to this day, I describe as Angels), allowed her final three and half months to remain a dignified and loving, honorable and comfortable time while I adjusted to the remainder of my lifetime becoming without my gracious little side kick.
I will always be grateful for meeting as strong and loving community within the walls of Big River Veterinary Services Office. Their caregiving will always be a model of compassion and empathy within my memories.

This Vet was on a list we received from the Providence Animal Rescue League to get a free check up for our newly adopted dog. We decided to try them out as they were the closest one to us on the list. I would not recommend coming here. The receptionist was rude, and I felt like we were quickly rushed in and out just because we had a free visit and they didn't want to bother with us. The Vet himself spent about 1 minute examining our dog and quickly just said she had a UTI and charged us over $70 for pills. This is their opportunity to impress us and make us want to return for future check ups and needs for the rest of our dogs life, and they failed. We will be bringing our dog to Coventry Animal Hospital now which I highly recommend as it is only 5 minutes down the road away from this place.

Would not recommend this vet to anyone. First visit was today, was rudely greeted by receptionist and told to put my one year old dog on the scale they had next to the front door. After waiting for a half hour for my dogs check up, the receptionist called my dog by his previous name, (changed name upon adoption). This may not matter to some, but it did bother me. Later on in the visit, I asked the doctor and receptionist about the change of color in my dogs tongue, websites say it could be caused by a disease...I got laughed at. They told me they had no idea what it was and said that he may have eaten something that changed his tongue a different color, I don't think so. Not happy with my first visit to this vet with my 1 year old puppy and will not be returning.

Our GSP recently needed TPLO surgery. We made a few surgery consultation appointments with doctors in the RI/MA area who performed TPLO surgery, and we - and sometimes our dog - didn't feel comfortable with any of them. I did some more research, and found Big River Vets. I am so glad I did. Dr. Cardosa and his staff are warm, knowledgeable, and really care about their patients (and their patient's parents). We immediately felt at ease with them and booked a surgery appointment on the spot. The surgery went very well, and our dog was home with us that night. Recovery was hard because our puppy has a ton of energy and wanted to run when she shouldn't have, but Big River Vets were always just a phone call away when she got into trouble. Aside from her wanting to run, the recovery from surgery itself was fine because Dr. Cardosa did an amazing job. We are now 3 months out, and our puppy is doing great. We are so happy that she's back to normal and will be in shape for her summer hiking season. If we ever needed a TPLO surgery again, I would not hesitate to go to Big River Vets. They are the best.

Early Monday morning my cat Gretchen was having a lot of trouble breathing. I have always brought her to a vet closer to home but she wasn't in that morning. I have taken my dog Jasper to Big River since he was a puppy. When I called and explained the situation I was told to bring her right up. She was brought right in and given x-rays and found she was having an asthma attack and was in shock. Dr. Cardosa and the staff immediately started treatment. I was able to bring her home later that evening. I am so happy that she was taken care of so promptly and because of that she is still with me. (Of course she is now driving me crazy because she can't go out for a week.) Dr. Cardosa also saved my Jasper a few months back after he was attacked by another dog that had escaped from his owner. I couldn't ask for a nicer or more kind veterinarian.

They did all the right tests, CORRECTLY diagnosed her, instead of guessing and got her immediately on the right treatment. I truly believe that they saved her life!

I took my 4 year old rabbit Oreo to Big River in August when she had a nasty infection or mite infestation on her ears. The vet was very knowledgeable about small animals and kept trying a couple of different treatments until she was all better. They also worked around my busy schedule and helped me find the most cost-effective ways of obtaining her medications. While they are fairly pricey, I would expect that from a vet that is competent with small animals and other animals that other vets won't treat. I'll definitely be bringing Oreo back if she ever gets sick again!
