My dog died about two hours after Dr. Baxter performed a routine teeth cleaning and extraction. Dr. Baxter released him to me before he was recovered from anesthesia. When I raced back to Dr. Baxter with my dog, here is what happened: (1) When I called Dr. Baxter from the car, he told me to "find some emergency vet." (2) When Dr. Baxter performed chest compressions on my dog, he positioned my dog to be lying on his left side, which means his heart was not facing up towards Dr. Baxter's hands -- dogs should be lying on their right side so that the heart can be pressed. (3) Dr. Baxter would not tell me that my dog was actually dead despite me repeatedly asking, "Is my dog dead?", instead leaving that task to my friend who met me and is an M.D. (4) Dr. Baxter told me I "brought him in cold." (5) Dr. Baxter locked me out of the room that he was in with my dog by opening a drawer inside the room to jam the door closed. (6) When I asked Dr. Baxter several times through the closed door to please let me into the room, he said "this is my room" or "this is my hospital." (7) Eventually, after I was allowed in, I asked Dr. Baxter to leave me alone in the room with my dog so that we could have a moment of peace, but Dr. Baxter refused to leave. After several minutes Dr. Baxter left the room, but he then returned and closed the door behind him. (8) Dr. Baxter leaned on the closed door with his arm pressed out against it; when I asked why he was leaning on the door as if he would not leave or as if I could not leave, he moved his hand just a few inches to his left so that his weight was on the door frame instead of the door panel itself. (9) When I was sitting on the floor holding my dead dog and asked Dr. Baxter again to please leave me alone in the room with my friends, he walked over to me, crouched down over me, and said, "I have news for you, this is my hospital, not yours." (10) When Dr. Baxter was done trying to assist my dog, he left the breathing tube in the dog's throat for several minutes and only later removed it when I asked him to. (11) Finally, when my friends and I left All Creatures Vet Hospital with my dead dog, we were encouraged to leave through the back door.Dr. Baxter is new to All Creatures. All of the positive reviews here are for Dr. Berger or Dr. Cutler. Read Less

I'm an animal lover, pure and simple. I'm also a local, which in Charleston is a rarity. Dr. Berger at All Creatures is my vet - not because his location is convenient to us or that the clinic has the least expensive services OR whatever else others base this important decision on... My reason for bringing my beloved herd of FIVE (2 lab mixes and 3 kitties) to Dr. Berger is experience. Now that I have written that, let me clarify with my top three reasons: 1) experience 2) honesty 3) relationship... #1: most of us humans are very emotional about our fur-children and leave out important details due to the stress and concern of the situation - Dr. Berger (& his DECADES of experience) has his hand on the pulse of the issue, always. #2: some folks can't handle the truth...I happen to prefer it... helps me make educated decisions on how to best care for the needs of our four-legged family members - even when it's not what we WANT to hear. #3: Berger is a true animal lover & will do everything in his power to ensure your babies have proper treatment...yes, he's been to our home on multiple occasions . Based on this relationship that we've formed with the Dr. and his practice, we have peace that whatever happens - we've done right by those we love the most Read Less

Dr. Berger has been my Vet for over 10 years. Sadly I had to put my almost FIFTEEN year old Great Dane to sleep this past February. The grace and compassion they gave my gentle giant and my family was truly a gift that I will always treasure. I, 100% credit my dogs practically unheard of lifespan of double the norm to the care provided by Dr. Berger and his staff. They never failed to happily greet us with smiles and treats every time we came to the clinic. She received extremely beneficial acupuncture (something I’ve never had the enjoyment of receiving) and after hours follow up phone calls when she got in the trash and got really sick. And when my sweet girl got to the point where it was too difficult to ride in the car Dr. Berger came to my home!?!? (What???) I have since adopted a dog and two cats, one that has special needs. This doctor and his staff are damn Rockstars! I wouldn’t dream of taking fur, fin, feathered or scale babies to anyone else! Read Less

While in Charleston for the holidays in December my gecko had some swelling behind his eye, so I took him here to get it checked out. Everyone was nice, so I can’t complain about that, but the prices are steep. After talking to us for a bit and taking a look at my gecko, the vet took him to the back to check out his eye more closely. He didn’t bother to tell me that he was going to use any anesthetic/sedative — then they proceeded to charge me for it. I dropped nearly $200 altogether for the visit and antibiotics/pain reliever to give him and then had to turn around and take him to my regular vet when I got home after the holidays because his condition worsened. Turns out, he had an abscess that needed to be surgically removed, and I ended up having to spend $400 more at my regular vet (not complaining about them, my gecko is doing great so I’m thankful for their help). I wish my gecko’s abscess had been caught sooner because it caused permanent damage to the bone around his eye and could have affected his vision. I feel like All Creatures was just looking to charge me for all sorts of things that ended up being pointless. They’re probably fine for typical pets like cats and dogs, but I definitely wouldn’t take another exotic here. Read Less

This is a five star rating based on merit; for a five star veterinary practice!  Worthy of perhaps a sixth star.  The office is convenient and centrally located with parking, the facilities are pleasant and clean, and the staff and doctors are top-notch.  Furthermore, the pricing is on par with expectations - not higher, as one may expect of a downtown vet practice.  I feel as though my dog's care is flawless and I'm always in good hands with Dr. Berger and everyone I speak with or interact with at All Creatures.  Honestly, probably the best vet care I've experienced in my life. Our 3.5 year old guinea pig, Cal, showed signs of distress last week. Normally a hungry hippo, he showed no interest in his morning greens. I called this vet first & unfortunately Dr Berger was off (Thursdays he is out of the office). Knowing time was of the essence I took him to a vet in Mount Pleasant. He needed sedation and X-rays, general anesthesia for trimming his teeth, antibiotics, pain meds, a nail trim (which he did need but I didn't check the box for it). 3 hrs & $830+ later  Cal was home. After his extensive dental treatment he couldn't eat is food & relied on us to syringe feed him daily. When I called the vet in Mount P about his not being able to eat yet (2 days after his teeth trimming), I was met with being asked if I would like to change his recheck appt & if we needed to have a "quality of life talk." That did it for me. I didn't feel great about my experience at said vet to begin with but now I knew I should've gone to All Creatures. I emailed the clinic & immediately heard back from Dr Berger. I brought Cal in the next day & was met with kindness from the entire staff. I showed them my itemized invoice from the other vet & I could see shock & awe in their faces. Cal is on the mend & not knocking on death's door as the Mount Pleasant vet had led me to believe. Our fur babies are family & should be treated as such. I cannot recommend All Creatures & Dr Berger enough! Read Less

I have seen a few other vets around Charleston and I feel like I am getting the most information and honest assessments from the staff here. They always make me feel welcome and I believe every time I have been there, there has been some sort of odd animal they were helping out of the goodness of their hearts behind the counter - last time it was a hurt duckling. Dr. Berger and his staff are SO amazing. My kitty had been sick on and off for a few weeks and his (old) vet didn't seem to know or care what was going on and wasn't doing much to help him. He took a turn for the worst on a Saturday when most vet clinic were closed. I called All Creatures because they were open and explained what was going on. Even though it was 15 min before they closed they told me to bring him in. As soon as I got there it was so clear how much everyone there cared as soon as I walked in the front door. And when your animal is sick that is exactly what you want and need. Dr. Berger checked him out and gave me answers AND a reasonable plan of action at a great price. Not only that, but he went above and beyond by giving me his personal cell to give him updates on Mowgli over the holiday weekend so that he could make sure he was ok while there office was closed. Mowgli stared feeling better within two days and it's such a blessing I found All Creatures. I'm a life long client. I rode and owned horses for 15 years and finding a team that genuinely cares about your animal as much as you do is unfortunately so rare. They deserve a medal and I can not thank them enough for saving my kitty!!! Read Less

Jade our little conure with the scream of an eagle is turning 1 March 25th. Little fellow needed a wing trim because he was starting to helicopter around the house. Dangerous for our little guy. His nails were also starting to look and feel like talons so a trim there too. I was greeted at the door and the receptionist was very welcoming. Filled out some paper work and waited to be seen. They have a train set in case your brave enough to try to manage a little human and a fur/feather baby. I'm just not that multitask capable. Reading reviews before I came hear and they are literally a few blocks from us I was happy to find out they have an exotic creature specialist that comes in a couple of times a week. I could tell by the rapport between the Dr. and clients I over heard him talking to that they keep their patients close knit and people tend to stay with them for years. That's always a good sign. Jade was handled by the receptionist and now wondering if she wasn't a vet tech but anyway she was caring towards my feather baby. She took him away to clipped and I would have preferred to be with him but he came back relaxed enough. I took a star away for two reasons. It seemed a bit grubby and unorganized. It's in an old building, not knocking that, but the exam table was chipped away, the floors needed a mop and the bench seating was less than desirable. Which brings me to my second reason. It took me 45 minutes to get Jades wings and nails clipped. My human doctor never makes me wait that long. I don't think that is the average wait time for fur babies since I saw several come and go while I was there. I assume two different doctors, one handling exotics the other doggies. I will try again and the lady who helped me was sincerely nice so I have a good vibe. Read Less

He healed her wounds in the very beginning and has treated her like his own through years of allergies, infections, stitches and even cancer. He is also an extremely skilled surgeon. Will not take my dog back here again. If living downtown, it's worth the drive elsewhere! I am shocked at how well rated they are. I made the appointment over the phone to have my 6 yr old Lab mix receive her annual rabies shot and to have a general check up. When my boyfriend and I got there, the lady at the front desk could not figure out if she needed her shots or not. She kept saying that she just had them in Dec 2015, when it was 2014. She argued with the tech over it for 15 minutes, and asked us 3 times. I told her over the phone that's what she was coming in for today. She said the visit would be about $100 for the shots and check-up. I said that was fine. We went back into the exam room, which was dingy looking, with several open paint cans underneath the desk. Dr. Berger came in, looked in Ellie's ears, checked her hips and looked through her fur. Said she looked fine. We told her that she sneezes frequently through-out the day and has been doing so since we got her over a year ago. He ended up having her vaccinated for kennel cough, which she did not need. He left the room, we waited about 15 minutes, he came back in and said we were good to go, and we said that she hadn't even received her shots yet... A few minutes later, two techs come into the room and proceed to give her 2 shots, a nose spray, draw blood, and get a stool sample. They did not say what they were doing or what they were giving her. They came in, did the work, and left. When we went to check out, it came out to be $230. They gave a receipt of what shots they had given her, and there were many that we had not discussed and things that she did not need. They said they would set up a prescription for a heart-worm preventative when the tests results came back, which they said they would call the next morning to inform me. They never called. I called them 3 days later to ask what the results were, they said she was negative, and that was it. No information about a prescription. Moral of the story: I would not recommend taking your beloved pet here. They need to figure out what is going on; everyone just seemed confused. And the facilities are not very nice. I was very upset at how everything went. We will not be back. Read Less

I ended up moving to Chicago but I still call dr. Cutler he even told me he would give my new vet a run down of Bella's history instead of just sending over her medical records. If you live in charleston and have a dog then you are lucky that you can use Dr. Cutler. Read Less

When we adopted our dog, the rescue service recommended two vets--All Creatures was the one we selected largely because it is just blocks away from our home.  We have never failed to be impressed with this place.  They are so accessible, quick to get you in, patient and communicative with us humans and fantastic with the dogs.  Once when we had to bring our little guy in because he ate something he shouldn't have, they called the next day to make sure he was feeling better.  I thought that showed a level of attentiveness that is rare, but that has been reflected in just about every interaction we have had with All Creatures.  I highly recommend them.

Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

During Tanker's last year she had numerous doctors appointment. At each appointment everyone treated her and us with kindness and compassion. At the end they did everything in their power to help Tanker's passing be as easy, painless and peaceful as was possible. We will always be grateful. They continue to take excellent care of our two dogs, Gabi and Gunther, and our two cats Heidi and Helga. Read Less

Dr. Berger and his staff are nothing short of amazing. I had a very sick kitty on my hands that had to be left in their care over Christmas eve and Christmas night. Dr. Berger would text me every few hours keeping me posted on her status. I picked her up the day after Christmas and she had made a full recovery. I honestly cant say enough about everyone there..... Kind, comforting, caring and compassionate (not to mention extremely competent). Top marks across the board!Read Less

Just moved here from Greenville SC and needed a vet for my 8 year old pitbull. I took him here after speaking to the vet over the phone about his tooth problem. Everyone there is so honest and down to earth. I respect that. I felt really at ease and comfortable leaving my Mac there with them. Through out the day they stayed in touch with me and the vet even called me on his lunch break to provide me with his personal number to use if I had any other concerns. All in all I would definitely recommend them to anyone. Read Less

I took my dog here for over a 2 year period. My dog had some less than stellar anal glands. Dr. Cutler helped me figure it out and saved me from having a $2,500 anal gland surgery. He saw us more than 3-4 times a week and always took care of Bella. Most times I would call in and ask if I could swing by in the next 10 min. They always were more than accommodating.
