My poor little Beagle, Snoopy, was dying of cancer. Doctor Karen Elliis recommended a lot of expensive treatments to 'supposedly' prolong her  existence. Treatments I had no money to pay for. She said, "Well do you want me to put her down?" I was aghast! I said, "How could you even suggest that? She's eating, drinking water, peeing & pooping. At that point I was crying. I loved my little dog. Doctor Ellis played upon my emotions & I am positive of that, which is why I'm writing this review. She is not the person she pretends to be. She said, "well, if you're not going to pay for the treatment to help your dog, I might as well put her down." I really believe she got off on my tears. Some people wear a mask. Her's slipped, & that's what I saw. Read Less

Called them with a terminally ill dog, cried and cried over the phone. He vet came to the phone to talk to me and told me to just come in no appointment needed and they had never met me or our dog before. I arrived 15minutes later and they had a real bed made for her sheets and quilt and everything. Picked her up and carried her from the car room had low lighting a candle and soft music they brought me a water and box of Kleenex. Vet laid with her in the floor with me and pet her for an hour before she started the medicine so she wasn't scared. They had her eating out the palm of their hand. Literally! Bklyn had the same vet from a pup, but I finally pulled the trigger and chanced a visit to Bees Ferry Veterinary Hospital looking to make a change. All this time I thought I had a dog who hated the vet. That could not be further from the truth. She perked from the parking lot and was on her best curious behavior until it was her turn. Every single team member we came in contact with was absolutely awesome. I was well informed and she received kind, patient attention. Blew my mind completely when the vet and her tech immediately threw down a piece of yoga mat and got right down on the floor with her. Bklyn was apprehensive, admittedly, but they handled her beautifully quickly won her trust. She was literally eating out of her doctor's hand before she was sent wagging on her way with an A+ for her exam. They actually want to treat patients so they keep late hours. They actually want humans to be able to take care of their companion animals, so they make prescriptions easy to fill and even informed us of a rebate and their membership program. Sign me up the very minute they start taking human patients! Read Less

Initially when I arrived I was ignored and had to ask to have my dogs checked in. I shrugged this off as I figured they were just kind of busy (despite two of the three receptionists seated at a computer right in front or me.) I asked to check my dogs in and then did so. Ten minutes later I was escorted into a room with my dogs where my Vet Nurse was helpful and asked important questions about both of my dogs. In addition to this Dr. Ellis was very nice. With the veterinarian and nurses I have no issue. My issue is that I went in for a wellness visit for two dogs and one of which had two injections and had to pay almost $700. I asked a few times prior to receiving my bill how much things would cost and was told "it depends" I assumed that since I was a new client that maybe I would be able to receive a "New Client Discount" or something of that nature (which has happened a few times at other vets I have visited since I chose to spend my time and my money here), but this was not the case. I am a full time student who recently moved to the Charleston with two healthy, small, dogs. I believe it is absolutely ludicrous that for an initial wellness visit with two injections that I should have to pay nearly $700. I understand that pet medications and pet doctor visits are bound to be more expensive than human ones, but a small dose injection that costs $15 at my former vet and costs $70.12 here is absolutely outrageous and honestly should be illegal. In addition to this they offer a "Rewards" program that is $90 that is supposed to "save money". In my experience, the purpose of the "rewards" program is that it should not cost any money and should in turn save the client money, right? Essentially, their hourly rate for my dogs alone was $680.42. Also- Is it really necessary to charge a fee for disposal of injection needles? Just for future reference: -Trifexis 6 month supply market rate (10lb+): $79.99 (BLVH charges $150.85 -CADI Cytopoint Injection market rate (10lb+): $15-$30 (BLVH charges $70.12) -Apoquel market rate (10lb+): $26.19 (BLVH charges $47.35) -Yearly Heart Worm Test market rate: $15 (BLVH charges $68.90) -Yearly Comprehensive Blood Profile and Urine market rate: $75 (BLVH charges $145) Need I say more? As a result, I spent money I could not afford in an attempt to be a good dog parent and will never be returning to this establishment again. I certainly hope other patrons do not make the same mistake. Read Less

Bees Ferry is not the least expensive place to go, nor is it the most expensive. But you get what you pay for. Today Dr. Hardymon was wonderful, giving me a complete description of what she saw on my dog's X-rays, and lots of other pertinent information. She took her time and made sure I understood everything and gave me options of how to assess Daisy's problems. She exuded confidence and professionalism and was very pleasant. The vet techs were wonderful, too - all of them. And the front desk is great. It is worth it to spend more to treat my pets at Bees Ferry for me, because it is close by and their hours are much better than any other area vet. This is helpful for emergency visits, and they always get you in if you are worried about your pet. Read Less

I took my cat to Bees Ferry because he continued to have diarrhea off and on after having a perineal urethrostomy at Charleston Vet Referral Center (an emergency clinic) back in September.  I took him here because I wanted a holistic veterinarian and the reviews online were mostly positive.  I made an appointment with Karen Ellis who hardly examined him and prescribed a rather high dose of Metronidazole (a pharmaceutical drug), Probiotic capsules, a Feliway diffuser (in case it was emotional), some kind of paste which was supposed to soothe his belly, a dewormer (in case he had tapeworms) and was told to pick up Psyllium powder at a health food store so that he'd have enough fiber in his diet.  I was also given a prescription for another calming med that I had to purchase at their online store, which - after getting the bill $225 - I decided against buying. As my cat declined to eat the food over the next three days, I put in a call to Dr. Ellis at 8 a.m. that morning.  I received a call back (the following day at 3 p.m.!) AFTER I took a survey that conveniently appeared in my inbox.  When asked if I would recommend this practice to other pet owners I said "NO" and commented that I didn't think it should take 24 hours to call a mother back who was concerned about the health of her pet!By the time she did call back, I was stunned that there was no apology for the delay in contacting me.  I explained that I had stopped all meds the day before in order to get him to eat.  We discussed the high dosage of Metronidazole, but she stood by her decision.  We discussed the probiotics and supplemental fiber too and we decided to "start out" at a lower dose and "see how he does with that."  When I asked how long to keep him on the probiotics I was told to give it until the diarrhea resolved, which she anticipated would be 7-10 days initially, yet she prescribed enough probiotics to last 120 days!My cat became more and more depressed over the next couple of days so I lowered the Metronidazole by half and gave it just once a day and surprise - it resolved!  I kept the probiotics and fiber going (at less than half the original dose) for a few days longer than the Metronidazole to ensure he had more "good bacteria" in his system than bad.  Things seem to have resolved finally, but if I hadn't followed my instincts I doubt we would have made any progress.  I used to work in the veterinary field and have had the opportunity to work with many veterinarians over the years - both holistic and non - and  I personally would not recommend this veterinary practice for your pet. Written by my husband Brand Myers:My wife called today at 2 to get a prescription filled, she had 2 hours free from work to go pick it up. According to the receptionist this would need to go through their pharmacy first, then a Dr. would have to write the script and they were busy so she could not guarantee that the script (which is just a handwritten piece of paper, we still need to take it to Walmart to fill it) would be ready in 2 hours. Ok, they're busy, we get it. Can the script be called into the Walmart pharmacy by the vet then, please? Yes, they say, no problem. Fast forward to 4:30, my wife calls me tells me the deal, I will go to Walmart after work to pick up the pills. She asks me to call the vet before going to Walmart to make sure they have called it in and also to ask them if they are sure that they have called it in for capsules not the tablets(we have had 2 separate instances before when they wrote "tablets" instead of "capsules" on the script, the tablets are over $100 the capsules are $10. This resulted in us not being able to get the pills until the Walmart pharmacy was able to get ahold of BFV which in one case it was after hours so not only did we not get the pills and wasted our time but my dog went without her medication for a day. Yet somehow this mistake was made A SECOND TIME so now we have to persistently ask if it was written for capsules every time we call it in.)  I call the vet's office at 5 to make sure the pills will be there when I get to Walmart. Nope, no one has called it in. Ok, mistakes happen, could you call it in now then please? Yup, NO PROBLEM! It'll be called in within A HALF HOUR they say. I stay late at work, 6:00 rolls around, I leave work and head to Walmart. I get to the counter and ask for the prescription and guess what?? IT WAS NEVER CALLED IN. My wife calls the vet's office, tells the receptionist the whole story and not only is she NOT APOLOGIZED TO but is met with a very nonchalant attitude that clearly says this girl couldn't care less that this vet's office is, yet again, WASTING OUR TIME. She says it will be called in immediately, my wife relays the message to me, I go to get it and it still won't be ready for another 20 minutes!!Other than this particular instance my wife has spent 20+ minutes after the time of our apt waiting for even a vet tech to come into the room on several occasions. She has never spent less than an hour there for simple checkups. They lead us into a room at the time of the apt then we wait and wait and wait....someone sees you, you explain the situation, they leave, then you wait, and wait and wait....then the actual vet comes in and you have to explain yourself all over again! Another time she went in to pick up a prescription before work which was supposed to be ready when she walked in the door; the receptionist told her to wait and it would be ready within a few minutes. It was early in the morning so they were busy but my wife, who allotted 30 minutes for this venture, eventually had to leave empty handed because they could not get to her, yet they kept promising it would only be another 5 minutes so she wasted a full half hour just sitting there! On our first ever visit there were a minimum of 5 different vet techs that came into the room throughout visit, which felt very unprofessional, very scattered, disorganized. A free nail clipping is included in the first visit, our dog is very scared of getting her nails trimmed, 2 vet techs tried to hold her down (55 lb pitbull) while another tried to clip her nails even though her arms were jerking all over the place!  Finally my wife, who could tell our dog was in distress, asked them to stop. On top of all of this, they are the MOST EXPENSIVE VET IN TOWN! I am all for paying expensive prices and even driving a far distance for quality service but in this case the price FAR EXCEEDS the experience. The one good thing is our vet, Lindsay, was very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. We have no complaints about her service. My biggest regret is not leaving sooner. Read Less

I came here during hurricane Irma and was welcomed with open arms. There was a tornado warning while I was there, so they brought me into a safe room with my pet and let me hold her. The Vet gave my pet a shot for nausea while we were in the room. She also put her on some heating pads due to her body temp being low. They continuously checked up on my pet and went over all of the possibilities that could be. They cleaned her up for me since she had used the restroom in herself. My fur child was puking while on an anti nausea medicine. I knew this was serious, and I have been less than thrilled with my current vet as they seem to rush us out and not listen nor care about the health of my pets. A coworker advised she had nothing but great things to say about Bees Ferry so that is where I took my kiddos. I called and asked to be squeezed in to have both my dogs seen and without hesitation they told me to come on in. When I arrived they were all extremely friendly and their love for animals is very easy to see! They spent a lot of time asking about any and all concerns I have with either dog. They gave them treats and toys and played on the floor with them! The vets first words were "you have a beautiful family!" And she proceeded to greet my dogs before me ... I LOVED that. She knelt down and while still playing advised me to tell her everything I knew about each pet. I was so happy to have someone who cared and wanted to fully listen and diagnose the issues at hand. They also offer a rewards program - as I am a penny pincher I am all about saving money, plus 1% of what you spent is donated and that's really nice as I don't know anywhere else that does that! For being squeezed in, they did not hesitate to spend over 30 minutes listening to everything I had to say from how I got the pup to the current issues at hand. I will ABSOLUTELY be returning and would recommend them to anyone with a fur child!! Read Less

Awful, awful experience.  I prefer to keep my vet and boarding separate to help keep my dog at ease when she needs to be boarded.  Bees Ferry has been boarding my dog for 1.5 years.  Today I showed up and at the counter with dog in hand they told me she HAD to be a patient if I was going to board.  The only way that could happen is if they gave her a full physical with a vet.   What a scam!  If that was a new policy, it should have been told at booking, not while I am there to drop off just before going out of town for 2 days.  I was given two options.  Either pay for the vet exam or leave.  Well, I left!  I will never ever be back to this place.  I've never experienced such horrendous service in my life. I recently purchased a pure bred Australian Shepherd puppy. I went in for a puppy health check for him and was sadly disappointed. Although the staff is pleasant the majority of the visit consisted of attempts to sell me their wellness rewards program even though I explained several times that I already have pet insurance that covers wellness as well as Major Medical. They also kept insisting that I sign up and pay for puppy classes. When I questioned why I would/should expose a puppy that has not completed their shot regimen to other puppies who were also not vaccinated I was not given a satisfactory explanation. While there I provided copies of my pup's health record and pedigree for four generations, genetic testing for the sire, and pertinent information and research for the MDR1 gene. He has not been tested yet so we are treating him accordingly. They were definitely not interested in any information I provided. On his records they classified him as a "Australian Shepherd Mix", and over prescribed medication - Sentinel and Nexguard. Since our visit I have received numerous emails trying to sell me their wellness rewards program. I would rather pay a bit more for a visit and have a veterinarian that actually listens to me, follows up on current research, and welcomes an informed pet owner. Read Less

My dog has been coming here since he was a small puppy (he's 1 1/2 now).  It was time for his annual check up, which included three different shots.  I called ahead for the appointment, and although it had somehow slipped off of their calendar, they had room in the schedule to fit me in and the wait was minimal.  Once in the exam room, the vet tech got down to my dogs level and made friends with him before starting any kind of exam, which is always good to do, both with dogs and kids.  Next in came Dr Bush, who administered the shots, and she was very friendly and gentle, both with my dog and my emotions.  She took some blood and gave him the shots, and although he did struggle a little bit, another vet tech was there to comfortably hold him.  He was rewarded with a tennis ball when they were done, and he instantly forgave everyone.  Dr Bush even shared pictures of her dog with me and at my request, is going to email me the puppy picture they have of my boy on their computer, which I don't have a copy of.  BFVH also has a rewards program (for a fee) which gives you a complimentary exam each year (saved me almost $60 yesterday) and many other additional services, including a free nail trim in the month of my birth (for his nails, not mine). To say that I love this vet is an understatement. When I got my 6 mo old puppy in August, I started bringing her here and never have I had a better vet experience. They are extremely attentive and thorough. They will actually ask you to tell the entire story of your pets and are engaged with you the entire time. As a pet parent this is so appreciated. Because of the positive visits I've had with my puppy, I've also started to bring my two cats as well. Bees Ferry has a membership program which is wonderful for multi-pet families. They will let you know of fees up front and give you options for how you want to proceed. The last time I brought my pup in for her vaccine boosters she was immediately welcomed and they provided a free bandana with the calming pheromone sprayed on it to help soothe her. Seriously, bring your pets here if you want to feel like you've been listened to and that your pets are truly cared for. The other benefit is that they are open fairly late on weekdays(till 8) and on Saturdays. A previous (negative) comment stated that they were charged for a full visit just for vaccines, but I have to say that was NOT the case with my pup's boosters this week. I made an appt and they called me back 2 minutes later letting me know they were changing the nature of the visit as I wouldn't actually be seeing a vet, just a tech and therefore the visit would be cheaper.Read Less

We had been bringing our two dogs there for years. But then when we brought our Border collie in for a removal of a growth back in 2014 they gave him a shot to numb the area and he had a massive reaction and almost died. This was bad enough since I looked that up online and it said Border collies had adverse reactions to this particular sedative that a very should know. But it was afterwards..... The constant denial about how it was not their fault, and he already had a "mass" internally which is causing it. So I bring him in and he perfectly fine and now he is near death? Well, Bees Ferry, he lived for another two years after that after his symptoms went away from that shot you gave him. It was your fault and I came close to reporting you to the Veterinary board. We changed vets and are happy with the change. Even though you may have to go farther go somewhere else. By the way, we have had issues with two separate doctors there, so I won't mention names. They were able to work us in as an appointment rather than bringing us in as an emergency to save costs when I came in with a sick pup, which definitely gets a thumbs up in book.  But rather than ask me if I wanted certain food/prescriptions, they just gave me everything and expected me to pay for it.  I'd rather discuss the way forward than feel as if I'm being pressured to do something someone else's way.  Especially if I'm willing to do something different, but just as acceptable, in the best interest of my dog.  This also happened the first time I brought in my dogs for a wellness check up as well.  Rather than offer to write me a prescription for a generic that I could have filled anywhere, they went ahead and gave me meds, which of course means I paid way more than if I had gotten them filled at a pharmacy (tramadol was the script, so I know it's available elsewhere).  I've also been pre-charged for services that weren't performed with the expectation that I'd bring back a sample for them to test.  That said, the staff were super friendly and made my dogs feel very welcome. Now I'm getting bills in the mail. I will not be back.Update: I finally have my balance to zero after many attempts to get this resolved. I'll tell ya, not one apology or acknowledgement for accountability whatsoever from them. Had I not been paying attention and just paid them what they said I owed or my husband paid a bill that came in the mail we would be spending $600 extra dollars for this oversight. I will say that the people on the phone were a bit defensive. Again not one apology. That's pretty poor. It's not hard to say you are sorry for a mistake that could really financially impact someone. I would recommend late afternoon appointments if you work a r 8-5, I tried to do lunch break and it has ruined my whole work day. Other than that, this is a great group of women. Their caring  nature towards our pups is greatly appreciated. They are very thorough and gentle. They wait and let your dog smell everything before the exam and are very patient and calm with anxious pups. My dog is usually high strung in new environments, but the vet techs put her at such ease by taking their time and talking to her that she later right down at my feet calmly. Moved to Charleston from NY October 2014. After a few months my 17 year old cat Sam started acting a little strange. Obviously a 17 year old cats body is going to start to breakdown. I took him to Bees Ferry Veterinary Hospital and the experience was great. From the front desk to the actual checkup with the Vet. Unfortunately my cat succumbed to his old age and passed away a couple months later. From the time after the checkup to the time Sam passed the Vet was in communication with me. She gave me options in regard to what we could do to either make Sam comfortable or get really serious and start fluid transfers for his kidneys/thyroid issue. It was greatly appreciated. It was really nice that after Sam passed the office actually sent me a card. The entire staff signed it and left a message of encouragement. So bottom line - this is a great place with wonderful staff that will have your pets best interest in mind and will be honest with you in their assessment. I strongly recommend them. I absolutely LOVE Bees Ferry Veterinary Hospital. The staff is fantastic! They take the time to discuss anything and everything with you. I never feel rushed or as if I am asking a ridiculous question.Their pricing is extremely reasonable. Compared to other places in the area, they are certainly affordable. I like that they send post cards as reminders on what shots or visits are due for my pet. Their waiting area is split into two areas- one for dogs and one for cats (I'm sure other types of pets can sit wherever) It is nice that they are separated because my cat gets a bit of anxiety when we are in the office or when she is in her crate. This allows her to calm down just a bit before being seen. Going into a cats only room also helps, as she won't smell other types of animals.I would *highly* recommend BFVH to anybody with a pet in the area. Read Less

We eventually lost power, so they couldn't fully treat my pet, but they sent me safely to another pet hospital. I would go back if I ever had another problem.

I have taken both my dogs to BFVH since I moved to Charleston. Both my 11 year old basset-lab mix (who has many health problems) and my 5 year old rescued pitbull (healthy as a horse) get the best care. All the staff and the doctors know them, love them, and treat them like their own pets. I also board my dogs there fairly frequently, and have complete faith that they are as well taken care of as they would be at home. I'm so happy I found BFVH! Read Less

I would avoid coming here at all. They are untrained on dealing with reactive dogs, will charge you for services without first consulting with you, and for every time you come in with your fur baby just to consult with the vet they will charge the price for a FULL physical(even if they don't actually conduct one). They'll even charge for a physical even if you're only coming for vaccinations. I will never recommend this place to anyone. I don't give one star because the front desk staff and the vet techs (specially Danielle) are nice.Read Less

Dr. Ellis operated on our dog for luxating patella of his right leg. Someone else had done the other leg. We were extremely pleased with the result of Dr. Ellis's surgery. Never purchase anything from their website! I made an online purchase (paying online) and got the items delivered to my house. Then they tried to make me pay for it a second time at my next visit, charging me double. They said I had to prove I paid online. (What?!) I sent them the receipt which I shouldn't have had to do. I would give five stars but the wait is excruciating. My appointment was at 12:15 and I didn't get taken back until 12:40. Their pharmacy is online which is very convenient. You don't have to remember to buy heartworm meds, they can be set up from online. Love the location, love the staff, hate the wait! Read Less

Read Less
