I am very funny about where I take my babies as the vet makes me just as anxious as it does them. Having just moved to Charleston, I was worried about finding a new vet. I took one of my cats here for the first time today and absolutely LOVED this place!! The entire staff was so helpful and friendly, getting him in the same day I called to make an appointment. The office was clean and well thought out, separating the dogs from the cats. I loved the doctor and tech that worked with us today. They were both so knowledgeable and never pushed me to do anything I didn't want to. I could tell they are very passionate about what they do. My sweet boy was so relaxed during his visit and was happy to go home with a cup of fresh cat nip. I didn't feel like they were overpriced, especially compared to what I used to pay in Columbia, SC. I have a 12 year old (almost 13) Cockapoo that I noticed had some lose front teeth after inspecting her mouth because of her rancid breath lately. I went to start looking for a vet that would pull her teeth only to find out that the teeth needed to be cleaned, etc and it was pretty much major surgery. I originally took her to a different vet only to be scared out of my mind that my dog was in renal failure. Because of the periodontal disease her blood work came back with some kidney issues. I then took her here with her blood work for the vet to say it wasn't that bad and they do a lot of older dogs with this issue. She really made me feel secure and confident in her ability to take care of my dog and her teeth. The surgery went well and now Ruby is all healed and doing fantastic, just down 11 teeth. Really a professional and great veterinarian office. I moved to town recently and had been meaning to bring my cat in to a new vet, but then she got sick! They were able to squeeze us in on a Friday evening at 4:40pm when I called at 4pm! They saw us right away and we were kind and professional. Everyone I interacted with during my visit was great. My cat did need a follow up and they scheduled us the next day, a Saturday! They really squished us into the schedule because it was urgent they see her again.I can't saw enough how much I appreciated their kindness and excellent customer service. It was time for one of my fur babies to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I was so filled w grief; Dr. Tierney and her very capable and loving vet techs not only took care of Lucy, but cared for me as well. A quiet room, w the soft musical notes of a water fountain, in addition to an inviting sofa and a cuddle blanket for my sweet little lady was more than I could have wished. I am the proud parent of a nervous pitbull who HATES having his nails trimmed. I visited West Ashely Pet Care Center as a walk in hoping they could work some magic on him, and although they couldn't restrain him themselves they had me walk next door to the vets office where there are more hands on deck. With no appointment they immediately said they could work him in. Michelle at the front desk was more than welcoming and accommodating. It took three people and a muzzle but they got his nails trimmed and even took the time to sit and feed him some cheese afterwards as a peace offering. I am new to town and had been reading reviews on different clinics around me, but with this visit West Ashely Vet Clinic won me over. I've taken my 3 pets (1 dog, 2 cats) here since I moved to Charleston in 2014. I used to live in West Ashley, so the location was handy. Now I live on JI but I like their services and staff so I still take my animals here! They send out reminders via email for check ups and medications. They also send them by mail occasionally. Staff are nice and knowledgeable. We have seen different veterinarians in the 3 years of going here - all are helpful and great with my pets. The space is big and they have a separate dog and cat waiting area, which is smart. My only complaint is I wish I could pay for expensive visits in installments, but I always have to pay in full at the time of service. Great place, definitely recommended! Read Less

Fabulous, thoughtful, caring vet clinic. I needed to take a moment today and acknowledge how wonderful this clinic is in every way. I am almost 8 months pregnant with a cat allergy/asthma and we recently purchased our first house from a kind woman who fed stray cats. I found myself in a situation with a sweet orange tabby who I have decided to adopt. From the moment my husband and I brought CC to the Vet clinic, the staff has been so caring and so incredibly patient with me. I've never been responsible for a kitty (especially a 5 year old with FIV and skin allergies) and I have had SO many questions. During our visit, they were wonderful to us and our little cat. Since then, every single time I've called in a panic about an issue, they have taken a great deal of time to talk with me, reassure me, and educate me. I love animals and could not have rescued this little cat without their help and love, especially in these few months before welcoming our first baby. We have been going to West Ashley Vet since the late 1980's. The care our dogs have received through the years has been superb. One example: One of our dogs (a hound mix named Riffraff who passed away in 2009) had a possible case of canine Ehrlichiosis. Dr. Eve Badger did extensive research to help us understand Riffraff's illness & helped us believe that we had done the best we could do for  our beloved little girl. We trust them. I have been a client of this practice for almost three years now. Ever since we moved down from Long Island, NY. I have truly loved so many things about this office. I loved the high tech office where blood work is done right there many times while you wait. Surgery is done there...  I could go on and on. But the one thing you can't get everywhere, and I don't care what kind of technology you have, is customer service and compassion. Today we had to say goodbye to our dear cat Annie. Dr. Van Liew has recently been treating Annie for an inoperable tumor and a back problem. I chose not to try surgery because Annie was 19 years old. It was extremely important to me to not only keep her comfortable but to make sure that she maintained a good quality of life. Dr Van Liew estimated that we would have a couple of months with her. She prescribed pain meds and an anti inflammatory. There were times when I had called just to speak with her about Annie's declining condition. She called me back and truly took the time to hear me. Yesterday I knew today had to be the day. I called this morning and Michele at the front desk helped me set up my appointment. She truly cares. She understood and I didn't have to say much as I have been so choked up. Laura, and the rest of the techs there are just amazing at each visit with our pets. Today was a rough one. I can't begin to tell you the comfort and care that each person working there gave to my husband, my daughter and myself, but also for Annie. This truly was the most loving way they did this. I have had to put pets down in the past, but never here. This was done where Annie was comfortable and peacefully laid to rest. Dr. Van Liew, you are so much more than a doctor. You are a gift. You have shown me how to treat Annie as a hospice patient without ever telling me that's what you were doing along the way, until today when you mentioned that to me. I needed to go through the process. You allowed me to to do that. I will forever be grateful to you for what you have done for me personally and for our beautiful Annie. I cannot express how grateful I am for the wonderful care that my animals received at both West Ashley Veterinary Clinic and their sister clinic Northwoods Veterinary Clinic. The doctors and staff at both veterinary clinics go above and beyond to provide compassionate care to their clients. Having moved from Baltimore to Charleston, I had no idea where to take my animals for care. I had gone to a few veterinary clinics before finding them and once I found them, I knew my animals were going to be taken very good care of. Having worked in veterinary clinics over the past 15 years, both clinics surpassed my expectations of client and patient care. All of the staff from the front to the back are personable, knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I am very sad that I no longer live in the area and am able to take my animals here. From vaccines to bladder stones, they have always given me good, timely and conservative advice, and worked with me to make the best decisions for my dog. I've seen pretty much seen every vet in the clinic and all of them have been wonderful with my Shih Tzu! They give her lots of attention (which she loves) and are very gentle with her. I have been able to get same day and next day appointments every time I've called. They seem very knowledge and keep me informed about what is going on with my dog. The only reason I did not give 5 stars, is because on once occasion the receptionist did not acknowledge me when I came in, and actually took two other clients before me that came in after me. It wasn't until I said something to her that she asked me if I needed any help, although I was standing at the desk. That irked me! However, as I said, that was only once. Let me start off by saying that I'm a veterinary technician and just moved to SC from MA. Previously, I worked in a shelter for many years - so I understand the struggle of shelters AND veterinary practice. We adopted a dog from a shelter down here and had a certificate for a free exam. Now, I get that nobody wants to do things for free and I would never have requested to receive anything above a basic exam free of charge, but I asked the doctor to check things and he just simply wouldn't do it. He said all was well without even taking a LOOK. That is so crazy to me!I just wanted him to really look at the dogs skin because it smelled "yeasty" to me and also to check anal glands because he had been at them (I know I can do it myself but I didnt want to!). Nope. I ended up contacting a veterinarian friend for advice and purchased duoxo on Amazon to help with his skin and expressed the anal glands myself. His skin seems better now....Wicked annoying. To be fair, the doctor (who's name I don't remember right now) was VERY nice and the front desk staff were friendly too. But I won't be going back. Read Less

No, just no...I went here for 2 years before I realized they were charging me far more on almost everything than they should have been (everything is cheaper at my new vet office). They quoted me $1,500 to have 3 teeth extracted from my dog and my new office gave me a $500 estimate. Are you kidding me?!?! Their staff always has an attitude when I come in and they act like they don't have time for my questions or concerns. Easily one of the better clinics I've been to.  The yearly physical is very thorough, and the shots are over quickly and relatively painlessly.  My dog is a 'fraidy cat and he didn't even really mind this place.  The vets know how to work with really skittish dogs.On the other side of the house is the pet care center.  Rates are super affordable, and if you use the vet next door all the information on your pet is right there for them to pull up.  My dog was boarded for three nights with absolutely no issues.They also sent me an adorable card welcoming me to the clinic!  This place has the personal touch but with the professionalism and cleanliness of a large clinic.  I've found my vet for the rest of my years here in Charleston. These guys will switch appointment sin you in a heartbeat with no consideration for your time.  They had all day to let me know Dr Badger had shifted her schedule around bit decided to wait until I got there early for my 2 pm appointment to put in the door there was a meeting from 1-2.  I politely waited 15 minutes for their meeting to end.  I get Inside only to find out that Dr Badger was not in the office but decided she was gonna work in the N Chas location today.  So here's your rescheduled appointment.  Aaaargh!!Not to be all negative but this just seems to happen every time I have to come here.  Dr Badger is great with my dog and I am willing who wait for her.  I just would've liked a phone call to let me know she was in N Chas and I could have made arrangements.   I'm still keeping the one star on this review. Amazing vet! My dog is my baby and I am very skeptical as to who I take her to. The techs are great with your animals, very patient and sweet. You can tell they love what they do. The vets are also gems. I never felt like I was being rushed out and they took the time to answer all of my questions. When one of my dogs needed to be seen ASAP they were able to fit us in within the hour. I have called for advice a few times as well and they are always helpful and quick to respond. I use the grooming salon as well. I am always pleased with how my dog looks and the price is very reasonable. (I have a cocker) I am overall thrilled with the services I am able to get here! After my experience to Ohlandt in James Island (the worst vet experience ever), I have been scared to take my dog to the vet.  But her vaccinations were due, so a friend recommended West Ashley Vet.  My dog is super neurotic, severe anxiety, and does not do well at the vet.  The techs and the doctor were so good with her, it was one of the most painless experiences we have had thus far at a vet in the 6 years we've had her.  They didn't try to sell me any goofy products or unnecessary exams, the facility was spotless and even the photographs on the wall were nice to look at.If you're looking for a vet, give these guys a shot - if I weren't moving this would become my regular vet. I had scheduled a grooming appointment this morning, 10/6/2011 and a follow up vet appointment next door at 4:30PM. I thought, ""oh this is great! Drop my dogs off before work and pick them up at after work, walk next door and get a check-up"". Well, upon arrive, I was told by the two women at the front desk ""you canceled your appointment and we are booked for the day and have no room."" Obviously I did not cancel my own appointment with knowing. So, I was polite and left. I did receive a follow-up phone call to explain that it was an accident and when the vet booked the appointment it deleted my grooming appointment. I was also told that I would not have been able to see the vet after the grooming as they do not like to inspect skin issues on a freshly washed dog. However, when I spoke to the vet on the phone, I was told they wanted the dog shaved in order to actually see the skin, so too bad for that excuse. She offered to re-book me on Monday (4 days from now). Too bad I already lost 2 hours of work and dumped the gas in my ram 2500 and nothing to show for it. First and last impression: No communication via the 2 business, low customer care priority, and scatterbrained organization. Read Less
