Sofi Loved Dog-tor Roberts! I came to this vet while working in Charleston. Sofi and I felt so comfortable there, I had no problem driving all the way from our home in Columbia, SC for our regular vet visits. As a dog mommy, I appreciated the alternative treatments and information I was offered.The office and all of the staff is so inviting, we always felt comfortable and at home. I don't have the words to thank Sun Dog Cat Moon for all that they do to keep the animals in their care happy and healthy. They have literally saved my 13 year old Boxer's life more than once and also have set her up to enjoy and bounce through her golden years. This practice also added more than two very happy and healthy years for our Henry who passed away three years ago after a very long adventure filled life. I would give you 20 stars if I could! thank you Dr. Horton & Staff at SDCM!!! I have always taken my dog, Gulliver, to a "normal" vet specializing in western medicine, like most vets. Gulliver used to get hot spots, itchy skin, throw up yellow bile random mornings and even hair loss randomly during the years. 2015 was the worst ever. He lost all the hair around his eyes and developed pimple like bumps and scabs. He was in the cone of shame for 3 long months. His regular vet wanted to give him steroids, medicine and topical ointment to aid his relief. I did not like that idea (my thought was "what if those things don't work?") so searched for natural alternatives in charleston and found SDCM. Upon arrival, Gulliver was calm and seemed to enjoy his time with Dr. Horton. She was on the floor with him for about 45 minutes checking him out, loving on him and just getting to know him better. They suggested the Crock Pot Diet for him and I'll admit was very hesitant at first but over the year has transformed Gulliver into a dog with little to no health problems. He has lost about 10 lbs in total (which was needed) and is a happier, healthier pup overall. The thing I loved the most was that he did not walk away with a single medication or prescription. Just a suggestion of a simple food swap. Now, I tell all of my own clients and those searching for a great vet about SDCM. It's quite the drive from Daniel Island but worth it for my boy. We've been going to Sun Dog Cat Moon for a little over a year now and couldn't be happier with the outstanding level of veterinary care and knowledgeable staff. Everyone is extremely helpful and friendly, and spends time getting to know your dog and his personality, as well as his health and wellness needs. My super shy, timid dog now loves going to the vet and is more relaxed and comfortable there than pretty much anywhere else. And anytime I have called or emailed with follow up questions, help with submitting an insurance claim, or ordering supplements, the administrative staff are great to work with and incredibly efficient. We do the crockpot diet and not only does my dog get excited about mealtimes (he couldn't have cared less about dry food), but I feel better knowing exactly what he's eating and that he's only eating ingredients with real nutritional value. I also love Dr. Roberts' holistic approach to medical issues - she strikes an important balance between prescribing medication and treatments when necessary, but trying to find natural, long-term solutions whenever possible. Well as a believer in a mix of eastern and western medicine for myself , I of course felt the need to extend this way of life to my furry little children as well.  The staff has been great and I LOVE the use of technology and email.  They even checked me out in the room after the visit.  Gone are the days of wrestling with the leash bc my dog wants to check out the other dog in the waiting room while I am trying to sign a credit card slip.    Not to mention, any vet who spends a majority of the appointment on the floor giving lots of hugs and kisses to my cat/dog wins me over.  You can see how much they adore your animals.  I love the crock pot diet for my dog and I love how they can tell me about my dogs personality ( apparently Lola is wood and easy going).  I think it is fascinating.  Now, if you don't agree with the whole chinese approach then don't worry, they still have things like flea meds and vaccinations but they are just more cautious with their use.  And I feel they were reasonably priced for all that I was getting! Dr. Roberts and her amazing staff are the best I've ever known, and I've taken my pets to some very well known veterinarians across the country.  There is no one more compassionate, more thorough, more understanding, or more willing to do everything it takes to give your pet the best care possible.  Dr. Roberts is trained in both Eastern and Western medicine, and utilizes such non-pharmaceutical and nonsurgical methods such as acupuncture, supplements and natural treatments, cold laser therapy, and more.  She also offers Western methods that include medicines and surgical procedures.  Michael Daly is their pet masseuse extraordinaire, and he is just that!  In conjunction, they both, along with the amazing techs, work wonders on my 14 yr old boy.  They have even recently added another veterinarian, Dr. Borakove, and a pet chiropractor, Dr. LeZette, to their amazing world class staff roster.  Being trained and highly knowledgeable in both Eastern and Western medicine allows Dr. Roberts to offer the most appropriate, least invasive, and safest therapy for your pets.  I am grateful that she not only delivers such great service, but that she really takes the time to make sure that you understand everything as well.  (Ever been to a professional that just considered themselves the professional and didn't feel the need to explain their methods to you or couldn't relay info in laymen terms?  I have.  It's unpleasant.  Sun Dog Cat Moon is NOT like that)  Whether your pet needs surgery or acupuncture, she will explain to you why she prefers that method and what it means for you and your pet.  And when you check out, there is a summary of notes from your appointment so you don't have to rely on your own memory (which can be tough in general, even more so when you're faced with a stressful scenario such as your pet is very sick).The entire staff was incredibly kind and attentive to our needs when my 13 yr old female was diagnosed with cancer and passed away last year.  I fully believe that the excellent care is what kept my girl so healthy and bought us an extra 4 months with her.  For it being such a rough time, Dr. Roberts always took the time to talk to me when I called with questions and when she was nearing the end and we needed to make decisions.We have found our vet for life.  As much as I would like for Sun Dog Cat Moon to remain a secret, I have to share such wonderful animal care with the rest of the area as well.  We live in Mt. Yelp seems to flag me as a bot whenever I give something five stars, but I simply can't give anything less than five stars to Dr. Roberts, her staff and Sun Dog Cat Moon! I first went to Sun Dog when my regular vet (wonderful, wonderful people) couldn't seem to give me any explanation as to why my little dog, MuShu, was itching and scratching himself to the point of raw spots. My regular vet had given us, over the course of three separate visits, rounds of steroid shots and antibiotics that would work for a few weeks. . .and then the itching would start back up again.I went to SDCM on the advice of a friend and was pleasantly surprised by both the atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff. We were welcomed into the office (which is decorated in such a way that makes you feel happy and comfortable; my own stress level seemed to drop the second we were shown in). And our exam room was the most "un-medical" looking vet room I'd ever been in. It was pleasant, cheerful and comfortable. The way that Dr. Roberts approached my dog really blew my mind. Normally, MuShu shakes from the second we cross the threshold of the vets office (or groomer's) and until we leave. Dr. Roberts and her assistant came into the office and let my dog walk around until she was ready to examine him. He was given treats by both Dr. Roberts and her assistant (normally, he doesn't like treats, but whatever they were feeding him had him VERY interested). Despite getting blood drawn and some other necessary but minor unpleasantness, my dog hasn't shivered ONCE on subsequent visits.THE CURE: I understand that allergies are a crazy thing and that people may not get the same results we did, but after looking MuShu over and applying the principles of Chinese veterinary medicine, we changed my dog's diet, gave him some gut support, some herbs for "damp heat" and some fish oil (that didn't stink up his face), he was cured. The only time he has skin flare ups these days is if someone feeds him too much of something he's not supposed to have!Because Sun Dog is on the higher end of price points (but not outrageous, considering the technology and knowledge that is utilized at their office!), I still use my other vet's office in conjunction with Dr. Roberts. Anything routine and he's taken to our regular vet. Anything they can't handle, we go to Dr. Roberts.Our last visit to Dr. Roberts is a testimony to acupuncture and using Eastern medicine on your dogs. MuShu had a crazy injury that caused him to scream out in pain every time he turned his head one way or another; when he was sleeping, he'd jump right up out of sleep, yelping his head off. If you'd tried to pick him up, he'd just whine, yelp and cry. It was terrifying for me. There was no visible injury, so we took him to our regular vet. They narrowed it down to an issue in his cervical spine (neck area), gave us some steroids and said that it should get better. It wasn't getting any better. In fact, it seemed to be getting worse. We ended up at SDCM, where Dr. Roberts gave him the once-over and performed acupuncture and cold laser therapy. Now, having had acupuncture myself, I understand that *generally* speaking, it's a course of treatments with a cumulative effect (although my husband has had instant relief from acupuncture at times). Anyway, I was shocked at the difference in MuShu after the ONE treatment. While the needles were still hanging off of his body, he was stretching his neck and head, pushing out his chest and moving around like he hadn't done for over a week. He didn't like the laser at first, but once he figured out that it wasn't going to hurt him, he actually seemed to enjoy it!  We were sent home with a mild pain medication and were told to take him OFF the steroids. We did and didn't have a yelping episode that day and he hasn't since.PROS: Clean, welcoming environment; effective treatments; will help you manage costs if you speak up and let them know your budget limits (i.e. will recommend, but not push supplements on you, extra treatments, etc.); they are careful and kind to your animals, making them feel safe and not fearful. You are NEVER rushed through. You feel like these folks really get to know you and know your dog. This is not an assembly line. Dr. Roberts spends an inordinate amount of time with you and your dog. You never leave with unanswered questions. Also, you get an awesome printout narrative of your visit before you leave. (And your dog's picture is on any Rx labels!)CONS: There really aren't any other than the fact that if you want to do EVERYTHING that is recommended for making your dog the happiest and healthiest he or she can be, it can be a little cost prohibitive. But as I said, they don't push anything on you that you can't afford and the costs are what they are due to the fact that a) you are given so much individual attention and b) the equipment they have is likely very expensive. We love Sun Dog Cat Moon, I will never take my animals anywhere else!  Every member of staff is friendly, helpful, knowledgable and amazing with the animals.  Dr. Roberts manages to simplify complicated Eastern medicine into something anyone can understand.  And she's always been spot on with treating my dogs and cats.  I have a senior dog with bladder issues and another dog who is prone to seizures.  I thought it was just something I'd have to deal with until I started taking them to Sun Dog Cat Moon.  After adjusting their food and adding a couple supplements, they're doing so much better.  The senior dog is no longer incontinent and the other hasn't had a seizure in the better part of a year.  Also, having dogs and cats means my vet bills are usually massive, one visit can add up quickly.  But the pricing at Sun Dog Cat Moon is incredibly reasonable and flexible.  I love this place, my animals love it, and my checkbook definitely loves it! What a great place. I took my 10mo puppy in because of a swollen toe and a bad limp. They fit me in last minute despite my never having been there before and the schedule already being full when I called. Dr. Ruth spent a great deal of time with us and answered all of my questions about anything and everything and gave my pup a complete health check, went over diet with me, checked out a bump on her tail that I thought was a bug bite. She suggested cold laser therapy to help the toe (turned out to be broken) and also gave me a prescription for pain and swelling in the toe and a cream to put on the bump on Angel's tail. By the next morning my pup could walk and run on her foot again and the swelling was down considerably. The price for everything was only $122 which was very reasonable. The staff was great the entire time too even though Angel was very hyper and kept barking. It was worth the drive from North Charleston and I recommend this vet to anyone looking for quality care at a reasonable price. Read Less

I took my dog to Sun Dog Cat Moon without an appointment this morning. They had a really busy day ahead of them, but they still took the time to see her. I got there right as the first person was opening up the office, and she stopped what she was doing to get some samples, pop them in the machine and get all our paperwork together. The vet tech and doctor wasted NO time getting us into a room and getting things going. They did a general check up, an ultrasound, and gave a diagnosis all within a very reasonable amount of time. Everyone was incredibly friendly, exceptionally informative, and very very good with my very very nervous dog. Even though they take a new approach (for me at least) to animal medicine, they explained it in a way that even I could understand. They not only prescribed medication, but also supplements and gave me some information about a healthier diet for my dog based on her medical needs. This was my first visit, but I was blown away at how well (and quickly!) we were seen. My dog has had an ultrasound before, and I know I paid at least 5 times more for it the last time than I did with this vet. Everything was reasonably priced. I am still having the worst experience with this business. I had a very sick basset hound and contacted Sun Dog about extensive treatment. I informed them that I would be a monthly client and wanted to find out more about their services. I then spoke with the vet about treatment and felt good about bringing my pet in to see her. No fees or charges were discussed at that time and I totally planned on being a client. Two weeks later a package arrived at my home with a dietary supplement that the vet and I discussed earlier. I NEVER ONCE ASKED FOR THIS or signed anything for it. I ended throwing over half of it out. Long story short, I moved for work and never made it back in. Months later I received a call that I owed them for the phone consultation and the supplement. I was upset due to the fact that I never asked for the supplement nor was informed of any other fees. The only thing I did was fill out an online information package, never did I sign or ask for anything. After the initial call I was immediately contacted by the worst collection agency ever! I have since then been called at work, in the evening, and on weekends. I have been harassed non stop over a small bill that I could not afford on top of my normal expensive vet fees. There is a right and wrong way to do business and Sun Dog Cat Moon went about this situation the wrong way. If I was informed of the charges I would have hung up the phone right then and there. They knew my situation of doing everything I could to keep a sick animal as comfortable as possible, its unfortunate that they would handle business this way.
