Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
General Info
Birds and Exotics Animal Care is South Carolina’s premiere avian and exotic specialty practice. Dr. Biascoechea, board-certified in avian medicine, and Dr. Rainwater treat all types of birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish. We also accept referral cases from veterinarians throughout the state and surrounding areas.
Hours of Operation:
Mon-Thur 8am-6pm, Fri 8am-5pm, and every other Saturday 9am-1pm. Go to http://birdsandexotics.com/contact/#saturdays for a list of Saturdays we are open.
Regular wellness exams are vital to monitor and maintain your pet's health. We recommend a postpurchase consultation as soon as possible after bringing a new pet into the home so that we can ensure that you are providing your new family member with the proper diet, care, and habitat.
Often, owners wait until there is a visible issue of concern before bringing their pet for a checkup. Avian and exotic pets are innately skilled at hiding any signs of illness or weakness until they have depleted their bodies' resources and are gravely ill. Regular wellness exams allow us to note any change in weight, behavior or condition and to correct problems before they become life-threatening. Regular bloodwork, radiographs and other diagnostics allow us to monitor the internal organs to ensure that they are functioning properly and to detect illness well before external symptoms manifest.
In addition to annual and 6-month physical exams, we offer behavioral consultation for pets that are having issues such as screaming, biting, or aggressive, defensive or antisocial behaviors. We offer prepurchase consultations to ensure that you are selecting the right kind of pet for you, your family, and your situation.

Against my wishes, my wife took our skinny pig here over a year ago shortly after we got her because she insisted that she needed a checkup. They had never heard a guinea pig cough, they recommended a hysterectomy to prevent cervical cancer and stating that there was a 50/50 chance that she would die on the operating table, she left with gunk in her eyes, and losing hair off of her nose. Now-a-days, when she starts actin' up, all we have to do is ask her if she wants us to take her back to the vet in Mount Pleasant, and she straightens up real quick. We're hoping that there is another vet (closer to North Charleston) that we can take her to, and hoping it is better and a better experience. :-\ Read Less

I've been bringing my rescued house rabbits to Exotic Vet Care for over 8 + years now, and I absolutely LOVE the staff and most importantly both Dr.Biascoechea and Dr.Rainwater are very rabbit savvy exotic vets! They go the extra mile to get to the bottom of any illness and educate their patients on proper care of their exotic pets. They've literally saved my rabbits lives since I tend to adopt health compromised rabbits that no one else wants. An added plus is they actually care about your pets, they've treated mine like the special little individuals that they are! :) Read Less

If I could give them no stars I would. A little over a month ago I took my bird Reganold here. After having him for 8 years we recently discovered he is actually a female because "he" started laying eggs. I was referred to him by a couple vets offices because he is the only avian specialist in Charleston for hormone therapy. Thinking that he was in the best hands I quickly found out that all this office cared about was money. They quickly added on everything they could instead of putting Reganolds best interests in mind. His leg was broken by the doctor in the process. He admitted to me that it did happen in his care and during the first visit I was charged almost $500 for everything. Then came back for something that happened in their care and was charged another $460. What really got me is that I was told by the receptionist that she hopes I will still refer customers to them because I work in the pet industry.... she would hate for something like this to deter me. I understand mistakes happen but the treatment that I received from them overall with my family member was painful. Their lack of sympathy was absolutely ridiculous. Not knowing whether he was going to survive due to the amount of pressure on the other leg was devastating.... luckily after a lot of research I found another vet who was willing to help me with him and he has been recovering well. Like I said before I understand mistakes happen but if I can stop another family from going through the pain I did with this review then hopefully I have helped in someway or another. Read Less

Took my bird in for a beak trim and instead Dr. Rainwater reshaped the beak which she did not need the sides of her beak reshaped. That is not what I asked for. My bird needed the upper and lower beak trimmed to help her eat without pain. I was told to have my bird fast to put her under anesthesia for the beak trim. Then when I arrived, they required an exam so I agreed because they insisted in order to get the bird's beak trimmed. Then when we were in the exam room, I was told by Dr. Rainwater she was not comfortable putting the bird under anesthesia. Should have ran when they required an exam just to trim the bird's beak and changed the plans on me initially. This doctor appears young and inexperienced. I see other people have had problems with this doctor. I went to a different Vet. It cost me $25 for a beak trim and this Vet did the job. DON'T USE THEM. They are just a bunch of thieves. Read Less

We brought our two cockatiels in after our female broke a blood feather (figured it was time for a check up anyways!). We were blown away by our visit. The staff is lovely and very caring for you and your animals, and doesn't miss a beat during exams. Very skilled techs and WONDERFUL avian veterinarian! He handled our birds properly and comfortably; as well as one can while pulling a broken blood feather anyways ;) But as if the care, treatment and attitude wasn't enough, this vet is EXTREMELY affordable. For our two cockatiels, it was practically the same as any ordinary dog and cat vet. Although it is a exotic vet, it definitely does not charge like one. All in all the 45 minute trip was 110% worth it - my birds got the care and patience they needed and then some! (Also if you're a bird toy hoarder they have a lovely selection!) Read Less

Extremely disappointed with this place. I recently got a bunny and wanted to take him here for a short, well being check up just to make sure he was in good health, ask some questions etc. I saw that this vet was the only one in the Charleston area that had rabbit care and their reviews seemed good. I also asked my dog's vet for a referral to a good rabbit vet and was sent here. I booked my appointment about a month in advance and even received a nice reminder phone call a couple days out. However, hours before my appointment they called me asking to reschedule due to other animal emergency surgeries. I understood that emergencies happen and was happy to reschedule for the following day. The next day I was heading to my car with my anxious bunny in a box when I received a call from the vet asking me to reschedule AGAIN. This is 30 MINUTES before my appointment by the way. The receptionist told me they were running an hour behind and wouldn't be able to see me before closing. At this point I stressed my issue of already being rescheduled the day before and how annoyed I was. The receptionist told me another excuse that there were multiple emergencies, etc. and that if it was absolutely necessary for me to come today they could maybe try to see me after hours. Now I understand vet emergencies but to reschedule someone 2 days in a row with little warning? Very unprofessional. I will be taking my bunny and my money elsewhere. Read Less

We used this clinic for nearly 4 years. I had ferrets, who get sick often. The staff was always amazing. The Doctors knew each of our ferrets and myself. It felt like I was always a part of a family. When one of my ferrets passed at an emergency clinic, I received a heartfelt call a few days later from this clinic. I never felt like they didn't know what they were doing. If something came up that the doctor's were not comfortable treating, they would do research (online and calling on other vets) to determine the best course of action. When we had to put one of our little ones down, I received a hug from both vets and they allowed me to cry. This was by far the best place to take them. We had three other vets first (from different state). This clinic far exceeded my expectations. Read Less

Although it's been a while since I've been here, every time it comes up in conversation I get heated up. I own a small pig and brought him there about a year and a half ago and the staff and dr rainwater all acted so displeased and uninterested that I owned a pig. They are an exotic vet. What do they expect. They even laughed amongst each other about how all of their patients got rid of pigs and made me feel so uncomfortable. I was so excited to bring my baby pig out and they made me feel like such an idiot. They didn't seem like they cared to have him as a patient at all and at this time he was like 8lbs. I felt like I had to beg them to attempt to trim his hooves which went easy as pie once they tried. I've nEver in my life taken an animal to a vet and felt like the dr and staff genuinely disliked my animal until then. They were so rude. Ive heard similar experiences with others. I was so happy to have an exotic vet so close, but unfortunately won't return unless it's a dire emergency. Read Less

Exotic vet care has been wonderful since the very first day we walked through the door. We have always felt that our two bunnies were receiving the best quality of care. Both Dr. Biascoechea and Dr. Rainwater have always taken the time to explain and show us what is going on. This has helped us not only to understand what things to look for, but also learn how to be the best bunny parents. In addition, both of our bunnies faced different emergencies at different points in their life. And, like most emergencies do, they occurred on the off business hours. Every time, one of the Doctors took time from their own busy lives to help them. I would also like to acknowledge that the entire staff has been exceptionally professional and friendly as well. We greatly appreciate the patience, kindness, and quality we have gotten over the past couple of years from everyone. When we walk into the office, we feel more like family and not just another patient or another bunny. For a side note, on our first visit, Dr. Rainwater suggested we consider insurance on both of the rabbits. At the time, both were very healthy and never experienced any health issues. We were skeptical at first, but hands down this has been one of the best decisions we have made for them. Nearly half of every bill has been covered. There is comfort in knowing that they are protected and we are able to get the medical procedures they need to keep them healthy and happy.Read Less

I took my Conure (Peaches) to her first appointment. I will say that I paid a lot more than I expected but it wasn't a problem. People need to understand that their pets, regardless what it's species, are family. If your child got sick and needed treatment would you moan and groan about $83, $100, $105, or $800? Of course not. Your pet is a LIVING thing that you chose to take in to your home. If you don't want to pay for necessary treatment for your pets then you shouldn't have pets.I see a few reviews saying that these guys want nothing but money, I disagree. What these guys want is for your pet to be healthy. Now as for the "Magical" bird food that they are selling (Harrisons) it might as well be magical!! It's amazing! I have a Cockatiel as well, I got her from a very shady pet store where they only fed their birds an all seed diet. She was quite beat up when I got her, Her wings wouldn't grow back, and she did nothing but stay in the corner of her cage. I tried various types of cockatiel food and nothing seemed to have made her better. Then I found out about Harrisons. Her wings are growing back now (Slowly, but surely) and she now walks around her cage every now and then and plays with her toys. It may be small improvement but what you feed your birds matters. I'm very glad I found Birds and Exotics Animal Care. While at my appointment the vet that looked at Peaches was very knowledgeable. He showed me how to trim my birds wings and file it's nails. I learned a lot more but then I'd be writing forever. None the less, my experience was outstanding. Thank you. Read Less

I was told I can not leave without either putting my Savannah Monitor baby down or giving him numerous shot to keep him going. My poor Flash was calcium deficit from the breeder I got him from. Thank you. Read Less
