This place is just ok because it is the only one that is close by and when you feel like your pup is in an emergency situation, you dont really break out google to search for other emergency vets. My yorkie had slightly bloody diarrhea and was vomiting on a Sunday and I had no idea why. He wasnt eating or drinking and I was becoming concerned that he would become dehydrated and more ill if I didnt take him in. The girls at at the front desk were lovely. I wish I caught her name, but she was very nice. There were only a few other people in there at 8pm. I waited for about an hour before they took 2# back. I was called back twice. Once to talk to who I am assuming was a tech (to get all info about what led to us being here) and the second time to talk to Dr. after they had already examined 2#. Like the young lady at the front, the tech was great. She was kind, listened, asked a lot of questions, listened--I felt at ease talking to her. The Dr. on the other hand is a different story all together. He was dismissive and off-putting, considering the circumstances. He reminded me at least twice in our conversation that "they were busy, as I can see", and cut me off when we speaking. He wanted 2# to stay overnight even though they couldn't nail down the reason for his diarrhea. Essentially what they told me when I first got there is that it could be this or that and that is exactly what they told me after they examined him. They wanted to do X-rays to see if there was some blockage, keep him overnight etc--this would have cost me thousands, YES PLURAL, to do all this. I was put off by this doctor and after another tech came out to talk to me about costs, I asked her to break down what he absolutely needed. Fluids and antibiotics. When I decided what care he absolutely needed and gave the tech the ok to what I was going to pay for, she peeked out of the door to make sure I paid. Meds and IV fluids still cost me over $500...Ugh. This place left a poor taste in my mouth, and the doctor and the payment process was the main reason why. Not necessarily the cost but the process and the people. There should be some kind of finesse and empathy that you have to have as an employee in a place like this. My heart and love walking around on 4 legs is reliant on the $ I can scrape up for this long ass list of things you are telling me you want to do, yet I dont get a conversation about options. Don't present this very long and pricey list as the "best if you really care about your pet" list. I basically got "we want to keep him overnight to watch him and do some X-rays to see if there is a blockage. Oh you cant afford that? Oh well you could just take him home with antibiotics I guess..". This is how I was made to feel. After much back and forth from my wonderful vet through the night and next couple of days, my pup was back to normal within a few days. lol I was never so happy to see properly formed stools. I got a hefty bill, but didnt even get a follow up phone call about 2# from this clinic. I hope to never set foot in this place again. Read Less

Ok this review will be long. This place isn't the best place...but with it being the only option near us in an emergent situation it was okay. Brought our dog in who was on the brink of dying from "HGE"....we don't know what caused it still. All we know is that he was bleeding from his rectum and quickly becoming lifeless. We were told he'd have to stay for a few days on IV while being administered meds. To TRY and save him. Or else his "organs would shut down". That's fine. Until we got the proposed bill, of $2000+ dollars. An amount we didn't have. They tried to make it cheaper but the amount they came back with still wasn't affordable for our family.  We then asked if we could take him home and give him the meds ourselves & they made it seem like our dog was going to positively die if he didn't stay with them. So, we ALMOST went through with euthanizing him since we were led to believe that was our only other option. But last minute we decided to pay the $800 for meds to take him home and give him a chance at life. I admit, they did work with our financial budget when it came to that option.  2 days later, our little guy is back to being himself! After emotionally crying thinking we would've had to say goodbye to our friend, he's now back to enjoying life. I won't give them a horrible review due to the fact he survived and they worked with our budget with letting him go home with medication. Not happy with them nearly letting us euthanize him, rather than recommending we take him home first. Read Less

I brought a stray dog I found here, at the direction of Charleston Animal Society. They told me it was their procedure to only take in injured stray dogs. This is understandable, however, the conversation that ensued left me flabbergasted. The young lady working the front desk suggested I keep the stray pit bull at my home until I could contact animal control the next day... yeah okay... then they tried to scan the dog for a chip and couldn't find it, even though Charleston Animal Society found it just a few minutes before. The fact that they wouldn't take payment over the phone is beyond me because my best friend works in an animal ER and does whatever is necessary to help pets in need! Visit took over an hour and a half just to be talked to by the doctor and see my dog again. Care was just fine aside from the crappy service when I call the number given if I have ANY questions/concerns regarding my pet after the visit. Called about concerns with her medication and the side effects, got left on hold for 15 minutes instead. Really quite rude, even if you are busy at midnight, doubt it, you could just say we will give you a call back with an answer. Very inconsiderate, will not be going back. Read Less

I was up at Lake Moultrie getting our property ready for the impending Hurricane Florence when our springer spaniel came up to me with a glassy look and half of his face starting to swell.  I thought he was probably bitten by a bee or a wasp and did see something on the top of his nose.  I immediately called my regular vet but they were closed probably getting ready too.  I knew there was an emergency vet clinic in North Charleston so I headed there with both our dogs but with the traffic mess of a reversed interstate road, it took 1 1/2 hours to get there.  I called ahead to make sure they were open so they knew we were coming.  When we arrived Ike was taken to the back immediately.  I filled out the paperwork and after a half hour I was taken to an exam room.  Dr. Kelsey Harris explained to me that our dear dog was bitten by a snake and his symptoms indicated it was probably a poisonous snake.  She explained to me everything she needed to do for him and the tests needed to determine the toxicity in his system.  Ike needed anti venom if the tests indicated as well as other medications.  Dr. Harris said she would call me later to update his condition and she did.  This is getting long but I want all to know that Ike was given excellent care for the 24 hours he was there.  He was bitten in the nose by a venomous snake and their quick treatment saved his life.  Dr Harris updated me again two more times and now about 72 hours later, he is almost back to normal.  Yes his care was expensive and we are fortunate to be able to afford it, but I can't imagine not treating our fur baby when he tangled with a snake.  Thank you so much Dr. Harris! Yesterday I got a call to come home that one of our dogs had an issue with her eye, so I rushed home to take our dog to the emergency vet. But while driving I tried to make an appointment to see our regular vet and a couple of others; to my disappointment they would not check out my pet unless I made an appointment and waited. I was trying to save a trip to the pet ER and save some money since I knew that it would be expensive. I got home and loaded up the dog and the family and we rushed to the pet ER at Veterinary Specialty Care. Once there we filled out some paperwork and then we waited just a little while before being carried to the back. Once we were back in the room a tech came and took our information and took our poor baby to the back to have her eye seen about. We waited for a good hour before the vet came out and told us our dog had suffered a cornea laceration and prescribed us a bunch of meds. We then paid to leave; after a little sticker shock that was expected. The staff, techs, and doctor here were very friendly to us and took good care of us. BUT I hope we don't have to go back. Actually this place doesn't deserve Uranus let alone a star. First of all you have to turn over your pet to the vet tech while you complete paperwork in which you have 2 options $85.00 exam or $500.00 complete work up...no in between. Meanwhile your sickly pet is placed in a cage in the holding area. After a very long wait a vet tech calls you to a room with a table (like for you pet). They go over medical history and tell you your pet's vitals. In our case the dog's vitals were listed as normal. Later, an actual "veterinarian" which I'll use those credentials marginally, appears to tell us the condition of the dog is not too much out of the norm. Respirations were slightly above normal, temp slightly elevated and heart rate slightly elevated. We had reported the dog may have had a seizure or at the very least lost conciousness. And her breathing was fast and labored. The doctor said she was breathing fine and hadn't had any signs of a seizure while she was being observed. We were told she had a heart murmur which she may or may not have had before but no rhythm issues. We were told she could be kept for observation or we could fork over $500 for the royal treatment. At no time did the vet say your dog is in dire need of intervention. So we elected to take her home and watch her. However, when they gave her back to us she was still breathing hard and fast. When we got her home we timed her respirations at 24 breaths in 15 seconds...nowhere near normal. We prayed she would make it through the night so she could be seen by her Vet the next morning. She struggled for 30 minutes before she passed. I consider this establishment a total misrepresentation of veterinary care...they are heartless and only thrive on people's sympathy for their pets. To Each Their Own, Experience.... Yesterday my dog was sick and my normal vet, Banfield, recommended this place for his care. I told them "NO, they have bad reviews on google!" Banfield took him back to care for him until they closed but they said he needed to come here anyways for an ultrasound, I was so worried because of these reviews.. Today, I had an appointment at 9:30 but I went in 1-1/2 hours early because I was worried about him. The tech came and looked at him and said he would be fine waiting with me until the appointment. Everyone up to that point was exceedingly nice and accommodating. When I made it to the room for my appointment I was not disappointed in any person I met. The surgery department is separate but even THEY were phenomenal! My baby is getting emergency surgery today and I feel complete peace of mind knowing he is in their care. I'm leaving this review in hopes that if someone like myself is reading that they realize this place isn't what the reviews say and while I don't know each person's story I do think you should see for yourself. If you go in and don't feel it, don't let them treat your animal, but I personally think this place is awesome. For those who complain about signing for costs, being charged a high amount, etc. You do realize this is an EMERGENCY VET, right? You don't pay a copay at the ER for yourself so how is this different? How about they do everything in their power to help your baby and you have no idea how much it'll be so when you go to leave and get a $3,000 you can't pay it... then what? They're supposed to just lose out on that money? Don't get me wrong, I would hate if someone didn't care for my baby because I couldn't afford it, I get it. It is a business though, they don't work for free and they're there around the clock for these exact situations but don't go here with some thought it'll be a cheap... they have credit payment options, there are ways. Okay, that's all, it's a business and a totally amazing loving one at that. I cannot wait to pick up my babyRead Less

I was very worried when my dog started showing scary symptoms from medication our vet had prescribed her. She was falling down, peeing herself, running into things etc. Our vet was already closed, and when I looked up the medications she was prescribed & the dosages, it looked as if they prescribed her WAY too much. Panicked, I called the veterinary emergency care, and they were FANTASTIC! I explained everything to whoever answered the phone and they transferred me to a vet nurse. He was phenomenal (and could probably sense my nerves over the phone). He asked me the medications, the mg per pills, her symptoms, and my pups weight. He explained my dogs prescription perfectly me to me, comparing it to humans like “imagine if you haven’t had a drink in a few months, and your friends come to town and you go out. Of course after a couple drinks it’s gonna hit you pretty hard since you haven’t drank in awhile. Your dog isn’t used to the medication, but the dosage is right in the range for her weight.” He made me feel so at ease and just let me know she’s gonna be perfectly fine but to make sure she sleeps with me and she’ll probably sleep it off. No one likes the feeling of wondering if your dog needs emergency attention especially when they can’t communicate how they’re feeling!! I’m glad they were there to help. Read Less

I went into this facility on Friday morning, September 22, 2017 with my very sick dog who I knew was dying.  Through many sobs and tears, I told them that I did not want to try to go thru any heroic measures to save my 15 year old dog who had diabetes and who had lived a full wonderful life!  I chose to have him euthanized which was much more humane than watching him die and suffer.  I had to fill out paperwork with my basic info of name address, phone etc.  I was then presented with paperwork asking me if I wanted to have my dog cremated and if I opted to have the dogs remains sent to me or not, and that the charge also included a dough plaque with his paw print and name on it.  With the technician standing over me, she walked me thru each line telling me to check off whether Or not I wanted each option.  I checked off that I wanted to receive my dogs ashes.  Once that was complete she then came back for a 3rd time to collect my payment before bringing my dog in to say goodbye and to euthanize him in my presence.  I paid the $145.00 fee, said goodbye to my wonderful dog and left in tears, with my dough paw print!  Imagine my surprise when I receive an INVOICE in the mail on Wednesday from  Pet Rest Cemetery for $133.75 for pick-up, cremation, and plastic burial urn for my dog?????????  I told them that that was incorrect that I had already paid for my dogs cremation when I went to the Emergency Veterinary Care facility on Montague Ave.  The lady said she would call the hospital and call me back!  She called back and told me I dId not pay enough and that the hospital should have given me additional paperwork letting me know of the additional charges!  I explained to her that I was not told it would be an additional charge Andy that I did not authorize any additional charges.  I called the hospital to ask them why I was not told there was an additional charge and their response was that I was "supposed to have been told" that there was an additional charge and sorry if I wasn't.  I told her I did not know nor authorize any additional charges and she stated that it was beteeen me and the Pet Rest facility!  What the hell is that all about???  How do you forget to tell someone that you will be charged almost the same amount you just paid from another facility??? I am appalled to say the very least.  This feels like a scam to me!!  We are at our most vulnerable when coming to the hospital with an injured, sick or dying family member.   Telling me after the fact that I should have been told by one of the parties and to be told I should have received paperwork from the other party is absolutely unacceptable!  I do not recommend this facility and I will never go there again!Honesty should be the best policy, with policies and check points in place to make sure all info has been given to each client under all Circumstances, especially under the conditions of euthanization and cremation.  Dena B. I cannot even begin to quantify how livid I am with this vet. I brought my 13 year old Manchester Terrier in for vomiting, panting, tremors, and constipation/diarrhea over the course of three days, on and off. My dog is my child and I know every pet owner understands that love. I feed him a raw food diet, I always have, and it never changes. I knew he hadn't gotten into anything in the yard, but knew he had eaten children's crayons three days before. I started giving him rice because his stomach was upset, and he still was not getting better. I woke up at 8am to his panting as well as numerous piles of vomit and loose stool. I immediately found this 24 pet hospital, called ahead, and hopped in the car with my pup. We were taken back around 9:30 am, with one pet family ahead of me to see the doctor. They took him back and I did not see him, hear him, or get updated on him for THREE HOURS. Finally, the doctor came in and literally hemmed and hawed about all of the possible causes of the symptoms he is presenting. It was literally nothing any person with an iota of a brain cell does not already know about vomit, fevers, and bowel issues. He then promptly (first time all day) wanted 800 dollars to do further tests. In three fucking hours, the doctor tapped my dog's belly and scratched his dumbass head. I told the tech I had no intentions of spending more than 200 and she immediately came back with a bill of 200 dollars for a shot of medicine, seven days of antibiotic, and a special canned food to feed him that is apparently vital to his health and current GI condition. Again, I feed my dog a raw food diet, and they gave me two cans of chemicals that probably is not legal to call food. They charged me 200 dollars, kept my dog away from me until 12:30 pm, and gave me literal shit to put in his stomach to make him better. I cannot express how livid I am. I want to get this business shut down. NO ONE SHOULD BRING THEIR PETS HERE. They will charge you an arm and a leg, keep your pet away from you, take up the whole day, and pump your pet full of chemicals. I wish I could convey my anger from this experience. STAY AWAY. I took my 10 month old puppy here for possible antifreeze exposure. I paid the $65 to ASPCA Poison Control to give this facility the correct steps to treat my dog. He was given a blood test for $84.50 to check if he was exposed - Vet tech says "Good news is the test was negative! bad news is we took the test too early so we will have to do it again!" I said "Okay" Of course, I want to make sure my dog was OK! What I did not know was that this facility was going to charge me another $84.50 for the second test - that at no fault of my own was administered improperly the first time. DR seemed like she was willing to help at the beginning but is no longer returning my calls. I was happy with the way they treated my dog and the promptness of taking care of him€€. But when it comes to the paying the bill and treating their paying customers with respect, maybe most of these reviews have a point€€€€. Read Less

This wasn't our typical vet clinic, as it is one of the only 24 hour vet clinics in the Charleston area and our emergency occurred in the early morning hours. They were super kind and helped us tremendously, as we had to deal with the loss of our eldest cat. I really do wish to thank them publicly as everyone reads these reviews. If you haven't been here before, I highly suggest to you that they are awesome...especially if something happens to your pet in the middle of the night and there is nowhere to turn. Thanks again. Our beloved family cat was attacked by a dog over the weekend. Our regular vet recommended we come to the emergency vet on Montague. The severity of the attack wasn't realized until the staff took clear x Rays and compared them to x-rays our regular vet took. Major damage to his lungs and rib cage. Dr. Libby was very direct and did not give us any false hope or showed any signs of being "money hungry" like some of the other reviews state. He told us that there was a chance that after a week of hospitalization if he survived he might be ready for surgery to try and repair the damage. He let us know that it would be a long painful and expensive process and there€ were no guarantees our cat would make it. After some deliberation after pouring over the blood work and x-rays and Dr. Libby's experiences with this type of injury we made the difficult decision to end our poor cats suffering. The staff was extremely accommodating and gave us as much time as we needed to say good bye. Yes. You do have to pay them. That is how they pay for the equipment and doctors who save animals or in our case give us the best possible insight so that we can make the right decision when to stop our animals suffering. I got my 8-week old pup on Friday. By Saturday, she was puking and having diarrhea. Not interested in food or water, and getting more lethargic by the minute. It was Saturday afternoon, my "established " vet hadn't yet been established, as I only had my pup one day. I knew enough to know my pup needed medical intervention and called Vet Speciality Care. They were efficient, compassionate and thorough. My pup tested negative for Parvo (HUGE sigh of relief!!!) but she needed IV's to get her fluid levels up to snuff. So, second night home and my pup is in the doggie hospital. The vets called me with frequent updates...were comprehensive in their diagnosis, asked me if I had questions and told me I could call anytime during the night to see how my pup is doing. Long story short...my pup got discharged Sunday and is home and doing great! Yea to the team at Vet Specialty...my story may have had a different ending had they not been available. Read Less

Vet Specialist of N. Charleston was recommended to us by our vet when our cat was rapidly losing weight and upon examination and ultra-sound found to have a large mass.  The vet had sent findings to Vet Specialist of N. Charleston who saw our cat on Monday.  By Monday, when they could fit in our cat, our cat was in bad shape.  They found that our cat had cancer throughout his body and an old, failing kidney.  His white bloods cells were extremely low.   They gave him a blood transfusion. Our cat lived for a week before his body was failing too much.  By the following Monday when his follow-up appointment was schedule, He was very weak and wasn't eating or drinking. We had to put him down.  The animal hospital handled it very well. They were very organized and empathetic.   We later received a pet sympathy card signed by some of them.  We were very touched. Read Less

Unlike all the other reviews, we had a very pleasant experience today with our cat Sam. Sam was taken back immediately. The Doctor gave us several different treatment plans. She never made us feel like we had to comply with HER treatment plan or she wouldn't treat Sam. She gave us detailed reasons why certain tests were needed, but could wait if we would rather let our vet preform these test. We were there for a few hours, but what do you expect at an emergency clinic! There were animals being brought in, in more critical conditions than Sam. I'm glad they saw to the needs of those patients first. We watched them handle all the care needs of the patients and owners with high compassion and professionalism. I would highly recommend them! Took my dog here last night with severe GI distress and cannot be happier with the visit. This was my first emergency visit of any kind, with either of my dogs. Hope to not come back, but only because I'm hoping for no more emergencies. The care was stellar, so if I ever do need these services again, I know where I'll be headed. Not only is my pup doing much better today, but the care and service from Dr. Libby and the entire staff was top notch. It was evident when I arrived that there were a couple of intense emergent situations going on with other pets, and the staff informed me that I would likely have a bit of a wait. (Working in health care on the human side, I totally understand that as I would expect immediate attention if that was my pet.) I appreciated the up front honesty. Still, I didn't wait long to go back to a room to be triaged. While I waited, the front desk staff and vet techs repeatedly checked on me to keep me informed on the wait times and to see if I needed anything. I greatly appreciated this level of customer service, especially late at night when I'm half asleep! Dr. Libby was pleasant and thorough, and it was evident that he spent significant time with my dog in the back before he came to talk to me. He was able to speak to her personality. He explained the concerns, and the pros and cons of the low/high estimates. The tech was also very sweet with my dog (I forget the tech's name who explained the estimate line by line) and able to address my questions. I called first thing this morning to check on her as she had to stay overnight. I got a full report from the initial person answering the phone, and then she still got Dr. Libby to speak to me as well. I got a 3rd good report when I arrived, from the tech. The staff arranged for her paperwork to be sent to her vet, and they sent me with supplies and paper goods "just in case" for the car ride. Wanted to let everyone know that these people DO NOT care about your animals!!! All they care about is money!!!! I took my cat there on a Monday evening around 8. He was blocked, which is fatal for a male cat. They took the cat straight back. Around 10pm they come to me with a $1500 bill and hadn't even touched my cat, other than pain meds. Wouldn't go any further until I paid in full. Mind you, they would be keeping him for 3 days. I don't know many people who carry around that type of money in their back pockets. They wouldn't proceed and let me contact the bank by morning to move money. The only thing that they done was punctured a hole in his bladder, which caused the urine to leak in to the abdomen, while "trying" to remove it. Then sent him home! For me to go to my regular vet in the morning at 7am to have him put down!! To top it all off they done all of this in front of my 9 year old child!!! You have to be one heartless human being to just let an animal die, when a child is standing In front of you crying for you to save his pet! And you can fix the issue! You should not be in this type of industry if all you care about is the money! And that is CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! Sad that this world knows the price of everything but the value of nothing!!! Read Less

This place is a f**king joke. The piece of crap night vet, sounds like a 5 year old with all the "I don't knows " that came out of his mouth. Took our dog to our regular vet, they took x-rays and found that she had an internal blockage and needed emergency surgery. They suggested we take her to the W. Montague 24 hr service. They also said that the dog would not last the night without the surgery. We made it to the 24 hr office around 8p.m. They took more x-rays, did blood work, and charged us $800, for the moron to say " I don't know ", which we heard at least 10 more times within the next two hours. We left her with them so they could monitor her thru the night. Showed up at 8 a.m. the next morning to find out what was going to happen, got charged $460 for an ultrasound. The daytime staff was very friendly and the vet was great, explained everything to me, which was exactly what our regular vet had told us the night before. I told him that was fine we just wanted her fixed. Gave them $1700 just to get started and was to pay the rest after surgery. I left went home, as I was walking in my house my phone rang and it was the vet saying our dog had died. Our vet even told us we should report them to the vet board, which we will be doing. Some of the staff definitely seem like they care, but that was only on day shift. As for the night shift they are nothing more than trash looking for a check.

Read Less

Harris! It was touch and go for a couple of days, and they did emergency surgery to debride the damaged tissue along our dog's back. He also suffered fractured ribs and a foot. My 10-yr old giant-breed dog was at the end of life and Dr. Mark McKenzie was professional, knowledgeable and very compassionate. He expressed genuine sorrow for my loss.

Read Less

At 11:45 pm on Tuesday December 6th, 2017, Whitley, our 11 year old male Basset Hound, experienced a twisted stomach, (gastric dilation and volvulus-GDV).  We quickly drove Whitley to the Veterinary Specialty Care clinic, on Montague Avenue, where he was immediately seen and the diagnosis determined.  His diagnosis required emergency surgery in order to correct the problem.  We were extremely pleased with the quality of care and the concern shown by the staff and the two attending veterinarians.  They contacted us on a regular basis, daily updating us on Whitley's status.  In the late afternoon of Thursday December 8th, 2017, Whitley was discharged from the hospital, a couple of days following his major surgery.  He continues to make a wonderful recovery!  We highly recommend the Veterinary Specialty Care team in North Charleston.  It is comforting to know that a reliable emergency care facility is readily available for our 4-legged family members! STAY AWAY. Thanks for all you did for my girl, and for having a positive, customer service friendly mentality while you did it! Read Less

Read Less

I definitely thought Reecie got good care there, but I would have liked to have her with me the whole time. Read Less

I had to bring in my grand dog Juice, and right from the door, the staff was on point. Dr. Powers was very polite, understanding and professional. The ladies were friendly and very concerned about my baby and the other patients that arrived. The prices weren't as bad as I thought they would be and we were even able to go back and get more meds for him. I was crying when I arrived with him because of his pain and I cried when I left with him because he was almost back to 100% better in such a short amount of time. I also got follow up calls from the office just to see how he was doing. They are amazing. God Bless you guys.

To some people, "oh it's just a dog", but to us our dogs are part of our family. Read Less

My Maltese was recently attached by another dog.  My husband and I jumped in the car to find the nearest emergency center as all normal Veterinary Clinics were closed for holiday.  We arrived at this clinic and the staff responded immediately.  Sadie was taken into surgery that evening and stayed at the clinic for 2 nights.  The surgeon, Mark McKenzie, was excellent and called us daily with updates on Sadie and kept a thorough log of all treatments Sadie received.  I can't thank all those involved in Sadie's care enough.  She had her stitches out yesterday and is doing very well!
