My dog Bella ate grapes and I chose to take her in to Animal Emergency & Specialty Center. All of the staff were absolutely wonderful and caring. The vet that worked with us really took her time to explain the lack of knowledge on the toxicity of grapes with dogs. One dog can eat one grape and die from renal failure while another dog can eat a bag full of grapes and be fine. I chose to leave my fur baby for 48 hours so that we could catch any issues quickly. I was called twice a day with updates and everyone was always very understanding and helpful when I called for additional updates. I highly recommend Animal Emergency & Specialty Center if you need a place that is highly qualified to give your pet the emergency medicine that they need. Read Less

First I would like to commend the staff here, they were, as stated before, on their game. I came into the clinic last night around midnight, and without hesitation the began comforting my little buddy ( 2 year old male cat) and making sure to take him away from the lobby and get him in the back which may not seem like anything to some people, but they are very caring and gentle with the pets. This place is clean and in top notch and there waiting lobby is comfy and inviting! The next thing I see with some of these reviews are concerns with the costs, as animal owners it is our responsibly financially, Emotionally, and physically to take care of these animals and get the treatment they need and deserve. Like humans, we all go through times where we need medical treatment asap. And yes, it cost money. However money is replaceable and animals are not. If you complain about the cost of caring for an animal then you shouldn't own one. If your animal needs medical attention dont hesitate as it could worsen and make recovery even harder. And if you're in this area, make no mistake that these are some of the best people in the area in the time of emergent care. I would give more stars if i could. Great job guys. Read Less

My elderly dog got sick while we were traveling across the country. They helped get my dog on a road to recovery so we could finish our travel & I could nurse him back to health on my own instead of hospitalizing him. I would give the Center more stars if available. They were there when we needed them for our sweet Greyhound, and have taken such good care of her. The staff blew me away with their care and professionalism, even at midnight when I would have expected tired and sub-par service. The only complaint I have is that they are not closer to where we live. This is an exceptional place for the care of our pets when an emergency occurs or major surgery is required. The veterinary staff here are top notch! The veterinarians and vet technicians were very thorough in explaining the treatments for my dog who had to be hospitalized, and they were very patient and kind to him during his stay. I loved that I was able to visit my boy while he was in the hospital, too, and receive phone updates when I couldn't be there in person. While I don't want to visit here again (I'd much rather have my pets stay healthy!), I wouldn't hesitate to bring my pets to them again. I know that they'll be in good hands! Read Less

Brought my dog here after she was bit in the face by the neighbor dog. Dr. Waller, vet students and staff were very attentive, listened to my concerns and everyone we encountered was very kind with my shaken up girl. We didn’t wait very long and the visit itself lasted about an hour from start to finish. I really appreciated them getting us in and out in an efficient manner. I felt that she was thourough in her exam and making sure my dogs eye was not injured or scratched. We were able to have our medications filled right there in hospital and I was surprised by how reasonably priced the visit and diagnostics were. I took my Golden Retriever, Bear, since his right ear flap was really swollen and he was in severe pain. He saw Dr. Waller and she is really compassionate. She thought he needed ear surgery and I left him. Later that day, Dr Brent called me and said the ear surgery was not needed. Bear was treated with fluids and medication. I felt that was honest in not doing unneeded surgery. They give detailed discharge instructions, since Bear had 3 different medications and also an ear wash. They even commented on the discharge summary that Bear was a great dog. He is from the TN Valley Goldren Retriever Rescue league and there is nothing I would not do for him. It is great comfort to know this place exists for future problems. This was the first time I had ever used an animal ER. Bear is now recovered and doing great. Read Less

I brought my border collie here on a Saturday night after she got into a big stash of chocolate and ate waaay too much of it. Everyone on staff was so kind and they took good care of my dog, who recovered completely. They acted quickly, knowing there was potential for chocolate toxicity, and they kept me updated on her status until we were released with follow up care instructions. The cost was about what I expected for pet emergency care, and I would definitely use this clinic again for a pet emergency at night or on the weekend! Read Less

My experience was a good one. Vets and techs were very attentive to my pups needs. They took the time to explain everything in terms that I could understand and answered my every question. During my pups stay there was a problem with the red blood cells transfused and they got us a full refund from the blood bank. Great care for our miniature schnauzer. He had come down with kennel cough. Cost was reasonable. Medicines were appropriate. Great explanations about the issues. Some more expensive suggestions for further care were made, but not pressured on me (e.g., X-ray), which I appreciated. Doctor called the next day to check on the patient. When I arrived at our next vet visit, I was grateful to find that his emergency care files had been sent to our vet.Read Less

Hopefully I will never have to use this place again, but if I do I will not think twice about going here! The staff & doctors were all so great to deal with; so friendly!!! My dog had to stay over two nights after surgery, the doctors told me they would FaceTime with me after his surgery & they did! The staff was always so helpful when ever I called to check on my pup! This place is expensive but that's what you get for  24 hour service.They seem quick to want to do surgery so keep that in mind. If you can, wait to see your regular vet. Our new shelter pup came down with parvovirus and our vet thought he might not make it. But she recommended we bring him to Animal Emergency & Specialty Center. They gave him fantastic 24 hour care and gave him the will to survive. And they were willing to work in my budget. They told us to feel free to call at any time to check on our puppy's status while he was in the center and not to worry that it would bother them. The doctors and vet techs we spoke with were very caring. Everyone at this center is great to work with. I am so glad they were there to take care of our pup. We took our dog Zena to this facility on Easter weekend. She received excellent care. All of the doctors and staff were attentive and compassionate. All of our options and their costs were explained to us every step of the way. The doctors took pains to keep us apprised of Zena's condition. Dr. Cohen was particularly helpful. Some other reviewers have said the services were expensive, and it did cost us a lot of money, but the quality of care Zena received made it worth every cent. Read Less

I have two dogs and I have taken each of them to this place. The most recent event was last Sunday. My dog couldn't use his back half. It was a terrifying day for me and I was on the verge of tears. I went to this place. They helped me get him in and they were so kind to me. They went over everything I could do for him. I called in with questions and they got me answers. He needed serious dental intervention and she has painstakingly worked on his teeth until now he can eat again and has put most of his weight back on! I had to take my dog for what I thought was a twisted ankle that occurred after our vet had closed. It turned out the he actually had a floating patella in his knee that was causing the problem. The staff was friendly and very helpful with taking care of my dog. I would recommend them to anyone. Read Less

Wonderful care and professional services were provided to my dog through her emergency surgery and overnight stay. Everyone kept me very informed and the vet was very good at explaining the details of the surgery. They truly exceeded my expectations. We have been so happy with the staff and care provided to our Maya while we've needed the services here. We were very sad when we found out our 6-year-old Dobbie had cancer, they advised amputating her leg, and we moved forward with that procedure. It's only been 3 weeks and she is running, chasing our other dog, and rolling around in the grass on sunny days. They have been so helpful in answering questions (at all hours of the night) and are very relaxed when we come in panicked about anything. Although I'd love to NOT ever have to come here again (because who want's their babies sick) I would not hesitate to recommend it over and over again to people. Read Less

What a compassionate group of folks at this place!!! A couple of weeks ago, I knew it was getting close to time to put my 13 year old Jack Russell down after our regular vet discovered a mass in her lymph nodes that was pressing on her trachea. I just didn't imagine that she would go into such a state of distress at 8:30 on a Saturday night. I had never been to an emergency vet before, so I honestly didn't know what to expect. Everyone there that night was so kind to me and allowed me to take as much time as I needed to say goodbye to my little dog. They even offer the service of keeping your pet until you can make arrangements. I was able to prepare a place for her the next morning and then pick her up. I don't know what I would have done if they had not offered this service. Today I received a sympathy card with my dogs footprint and such sweet words written from all of the staff. I truly appreciate the kindness that they showed to me. It made dealing with the loss of my furry friend a little easier.Read Less

My mom recently brought her older dog in over a holiday weekend. After encouraging her to spend nearly 2 grand to keep the dog overnight, do multiple tests & then refused to send her home with medicine to just keep the dog comfortable until she could take her to her own vet. When my mom asked, the vet admitted that the prognosis for the dog to live was not good, despite encouraging her to spend a ton of money to keep the dog overnight. They play on people's sympathy when they're at their lowest with sick pets. I'm furious & sickened by the actions of the vet & this staff. Read Less

Compassionate, caring and extremely knowledgeable. The staff kept us up to date when our Chichi spent 4 days at their facility's ICU. They cared for our little girl like she was one of their own. Discharge instructions were clearly given and written out for us to take home. Follow up visits were easy to go to without needing appointments and communications back to our regular vet was initiated without having to ask to do so. I'm grateful for such a wonderful facility but most of all for the superb staff, doctors, nurses and front desk ladies alike, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for saving our tiny Roxy! My 8 month old silver lab had his head ran over by a car. We took him in immediately after it happened and he was in critical care for 4 days where a tech was with him 24/7. These people are great and saved my puppy who is at home now with his big brother. They worked all week to make sure that he was going to be ok and by the end of it, they had all fallen in love with River. They are good people who really care. All of the doctors and techs are loving people with very high concern for animals. Yes, you have to pay up front but I understand that people want something for nothing. They continuously updated me on his status and what we were going to have to pay for before they did it. My wife and I are very grateful for what they did and can never thank them enough. Read Less

No words can express how appreciative I am of the care and compassion that was given to me and my cat when I had to make one of the hardest decisions. After 11 years of companionship I had to have my cat put to sleep. When I left that day I felt empty and that I wouldn't have anything to remember her by. We got exceptional care here. I brought my cat here because my regular vet was stumped and could not diagnose her. They had spent over a week pumping her with pills and medicines that weren't working, while she (and we) suffered needlessly. Within hours of bringing her to AE&S (after hours), the team had diagnosed her with end-stage metastatic lung cancer. We had to euthanize her, which broke our hearts. But it was what we needed. A week of not knowing was torture for both us and our cat. 5 separate doctors including an oncologist contributed their smarts and their skills (I never even had this level of team care for my mother when she was aging and passed away). Dr. Brent spent a ton of time on the phone with me answering questions and educating me about what the results meant, and discussing outcomes and alternatives in the most compassionate way imaginable. I was never rushed, never made to feel like my questions were silly. They made me feel as if I were the only client he needed to talk to that day (when of course I know I wasn't!) Once we decided there was nothing to be done, they provided comfort measures to my cat so she could relax without pain while we collected our family to come and say good bye. They gave us plenty of time with her to do that. All the while they treated me with respect, courtesy, professionalism, and compassion, from the doctors and techs to the front desk girls. Yes, you have to pay part of the estimated bill up front. That's because a lot of people don't pay their bills. This was all done in the most courteous, professional manner. Things like X-rays were a little more expensive than my regular vet, but not that much more, and they were able to offer other high-end diagnostics that the regular vet was not able to provide, which made all the difference in getting the diagnosis that we needed to make our difficult decision. A team of five doctors all contributing their special skill sets costs more. A team of skilled technicians costs more. And having half these people doing all this in the middle of the night costs more. Your regular vet and staff want to go home at 5:00 and have a normal life. These folks sacrifice that to be there at 2:00 am when your pet needs them. If you have a pet in need of emergency or specialty care that your regular vet it not equipped to provide, or if you need care after hours (and you understand that there are costs involved and are willing and able to pay those costs), then you will not find a better team of folks to care for your pet and treat you with kindness and compassion while they do it. I hope my other cat lives til 20 and dies peacefully in her sleep. But if she doesn't I will absolutely bring her here and know she'll get exceptional care.Read Less

Long story short: My Dane got her legs tangled under a truck & we took her to a emergency place in Bradley county. Weeks later, We needed an Ortho specialist for a second opinion as recommended by our primary vet because our dogs was not bearing weight as she should. FYI :We were informed UT does not take cats or dogs unless you have a referral or is emergent, so this place may be that in between if it suits you.   I wish we knew about this place in the beginning, I believe this lingering issue with my Dane would be closer to being finished. Beautiful facility, good staff, new technology, and realistic doctors. No one tried to price gouge or talk us into expensive procedures. Took an AP X-ray  without sedation (as said would be needed by other vet) and took time to review results, costs, and options. Fair and honest talk that was priced for the service, not cheap but appropriate. If you love your furry babies and need specialist or emergent animal care, I would recommend this place. Read Less

My dog had surgery for the first time a few weeks ago at another local vet's office, and we were sent home with no instructions and very little direction. Without knowing what to expect, we were very alarmed when she started having issues and seemed to be in pain. We took her straight to the Animal Emergency clinic and they had us back in no time. They reassured us that everything would be fine, dressed her wound promptly, and sent us home with instructions and extra supplies for keeping her bandaged up. We appreciate the staff so much! We cannot begin to express the gratitude we feel towards Animal Emergency and Specialty Center. Dr. Tuttle, Dr. Rutherford, and Dr. Hamby were incredible to have as providers for our baby. After our 7 pound Yorkie was attacked by a very large dog, the staff did not rush they RAN our baby back to get her to the doctor. I have been blown away by the professionalism, care, and consideration this center has shown to us and our baby Gabby. If the constant updates, communication, explanation, and repeated visitation was not enough to give this place 5 stars their expertise in trauma should be! These guys were a god send and everyone there is just incredible! Are they expensive? Sure, but you get what you pay for and to me saving Gabby's life was the most important thing. This is a business, not a charity and while it's unfortunate that not everyone can see this you will notice that there are not any negative reviews regarding care or diagnosis. That's because these guys know what they're doing and should be compensated accordingly. Thank you to all of the incredible staff members that saved our baby's life. I was referred here of my cat diagnosed with Lymphoma. I have found everyone to be professional and kind. Everyone on the oncology staff is extremely knowledgable and explains all the options in great detail. No complaints at all. Fortunately I have never had to use their emergency services but would highly recommend if you're pet is dealing with with an illness that needs their type of specialty care. Read Less

They missed a big problem and now our little Jack Russell is dead. Took Levi in Monday night because she wouldn't stand up upon returning home. They performed a chest xray and liver test and basically said she was fine and for us to monitor her. We took her home and she remained the same on Tuesday. Wednesday morning we took her to our trusted vet at Farragut Animal Clinic and she asked us to rush her to UT for an emergency ultrasound and she believed her spleen was entangled. UT rushed her back and needed to immediately start CPR. She never made it out. I'm very disappointed to put it mildly. Upon consulting other vets, I've learned the a basic exam on a small dog should allow them to feel the organs and make sure they are in place (as my vet did). I recently took my pet to this animal hospital. All though I was not necessarily disappointed with the care, I was exceptionally disgusted with the veterinarians and staff at this animal clinic. As a health care worker myself I understand the stress and emotional turmoil that families go through during crisis, and understand that compassion and patience is necessary, those working at this clinic do not. In fact, the front desk staff rolled their eyes at me when I asked questions about the care, the veterinarian gave me conflicting plan of cares and when a questioned this (just so I would know what was going on) she became "snappy." When I addressed these concerns with Dr. Rutherford he was incredibly rude and condescending, clearly he does not care about customer satisfaction, rather the bottom line. He could have at least told me he would look into the issues and then just got off the phone, but rather he chose to speak to me inappropriately without any concern or compassion towards my complaints. Please do not patron this animal clinic. They don't deserve your business and your money, and I am certain you can find just as quality of care anywhere else as well as more polite staff, I think we deserve this when dropping a couple grand! I took my Boston terrier there she was deathly sick. Our vet said to take her there and let them do a sonogram of her stomach.i really though I my little Boston was done. They did the sonogram and then told me what they could .She had a tumor in her upper intestine . Dr Tuttle did surgery took the tumor out over a week ago .My little Boston is doing great ! Through the years I have had to make multiple trips to Animal Emergency & Specialty Center for different doggies. The staff is exceptional and the facilities are state-of-the-art. Yes, They may be expensive but they are in line with other emergency pet clinics. You will receive an estimate of the expected work and, if your pet stays overnight, they don't mind your calls to check on you children. One of my trips I had to make the tough decision to put my baby down. The Center has a special room for saying goodbye. They tell you to take as long as need. It is very well set up for those final moments. If you need emergency pet care, don't hesitate. Read Less

I have taken two of my dogs to this clinic when they were extremely ill and had to be put to sleep. They were extremely kind to us. Very kind to my dogs. Also I took my late cat to them when she became extremely ill with kidney disease. Again, they were very kind to us and gentle to my beloved kitty. I highly recommend them The only drawback is that they are very expensive, but you do not have much choice if your vet does not have emergency hours and this is the only clinic open on weekends and holidays. Last June, my dog slipped a disc in his back and was in a great deal of pain and paralyzed in his hind legs. My dog is my baby, and I was an absolute mess and so worried about him.The folks at the emergency clinic were so kind and accommodating. They were able to tell me what the problem was and were very sweet with my dog. The young vet was really friendly and, while she paid close attention to my dog, she also made conversation with me to try to get my mind off my worries, and I really appreciated how personable she was.Negatives would be that I think the tech who first saw us was afraid of my dog (he is a very sweet, but intimidating, pit bull), and it made me anxious. Thankfully the vet was wonderful. The vet also made a big deal to me of not pulling on my dog's leash due to his spinal problems, and as they were bringing my dog back out to me, I saw one of the techs pulling the leash taut. I yelled out for him not to do it, and he stopped immediately, but it freaked me out.Of course, there is always the issue that one visit cost me more than an entire paycheck, but that is to be expected at an emergency clinic. Their facility sure is pretty; how much of my bill went to that overhead?Overall, while there were some negatives, I would recommend anyone in Knoxville visit these docs when their pet is having a crisis. My regular vet sent us over there when we couldn't figure out why my 11 year old dog was losing so much weight. They were wonderful!!!! They let me stay with her all night when she was recovering from her surgery. This place needs some good ratings so folks know just how amazing these people are. So Pooch, as I'll call our dog, has epilepsy, which has led to several scary and stressful nights at this place. I'll never forget the first time Pooch had a seizure and we had no idea what was going on, and our vet was closed. Not knowing where to go, I Google'd "animal hospital" and away we drove, totally unsure of what we would find when we arrived.  RELIEF! This is a state-of-the-art, bright, shiny, immaculate building RIGHT off of Pelissipi/40. Turns out Hubband knows the vets who own the place and they are wonderful people. The vets and vet techs there really know their stuff and are so sensitive to the panic people are feeling when they bring their animals in. Sadly, we've had to bring Pooch here several times, but every time we pull up and see the bright beacon of Animal Critical Care & Referral Center, I can breathe a sigh of relief. It's a costly as any animal hospital is, but they've also cut us breaks in the past because of how often we're in there. If your animal is having an emergency, don't hesitate to go here--they'll take care of you. We've seen lots of people in there with their pets in similar states of panic, and they have all seemed equally at ease because of this place. Read Less

My dog had been attacked and I brought my dog to this location. A family member was going to help me with the bill. They refused to see my dog until this family member actually showed up to sign a release form. They would not take payment by phone or check. This family member could not come to the clinic.
