I have known Dr. Wood since 1973 when he opened Balcones Animal Hospital on HWY 183. My father discovered Balcones Animal Hospital and we/I have bever gi3ne elsewhere over the past 45 years. He and his staff have taken care of generations of our family's pets. He was so excited to show me his current facility when it was built in '95 that he asked me to jump in his truck so he could give me a tour. 30 year + client - Love the doctor Woods.  Called for appointment for stray cat whole check up and was told next appointment wasn't until August 15. Strays can't wait that long...and they can't come in until you check for leukemia.  I can't wait 3 weeks. Don't know what I am going to do about that but I don't like it. Had to go to another vet for this cat. My other three I will  have to consider the long waits to get in. I am also a cat care person - take all cats feral or stray or lost to a vet for possible neuter and get them shots etc. Wish there was a solution because I hate to leave my friends of 30+ years. Dr. Jason Wood is simply the best. I've been bringing my two Dobermans there for 10 years and have always been treated with respect, genuine concern for my babies and a straight forward no b.s. approach. For the most part my pets have been very health but recently one of my dogs was having ongoing extreme difficulty breathing. I called Balcones and they didnt have any appointments available but I was able to leave a message for Dr. Wood who promptly returned my call. He listened to me explain in detail what symptoms my dog was having and suggested we bring her in right away. He cleared his schedule for us and was ready to see her as soon as we showed up! After bloodwork and x-rays which were very reasonably priced he decided to try a steroid shot thinking my dog is suffering from severe allergies that has caused bronchitis. He nailed it with the diagnosis because within 24 hours my dog was breathing much easier,  eating again and back to her goofy self. Greatful doesn't come close to how I feel. You guys are wonderful. Thank you so very much! Read Less

A month ago a "low cost" veterinarian - (North Austin Zippivet) told me Pumpkin, my 2.7 year old kitty, has something called Stomatitis and the only way we can take her out of pain and help her is by extracting all of her teeth. She then prescribed antibiotics and painkillers (costing $60), drew blood (not in my presence and without explaination, for another $10). I then received an estimate for her "necessary" surgery costing $2,500-3,000.Two weeks later, we visited another "affordable vet" - (Thrive Affordable Vet Care in Round Rock). She said Pumpkin does in fact have "severe" Stomatitis and will require complete extraction surgery. I am then provided with an estimate of $1,300-1,450.Today I took Pumpkin to the second vet for pre-operative bloodwork, done without me present and charged $55.00. They immediately scheduled her surgery for this Wednesday without asking me if I had any questions and/or mentioning if there was any necessary prep for her surgery. Before driving home I stopped by another vet (Balcones Animal Hospital) for a 3rd opinion. He and his father own the practice. They immediately saw Pumpkin and he said her Stomatitis is a 2-3 on a 1-10 scale and would not recommend pulling her teeth before trying another route: steroids. He gave her a steroid shot and two antibiotic injections upon my approval, in front of me. He said if her gums don't improve for at least three months to six months to a year - it depends on the cat; (if steroids work for my baby results will be visable in a day or two) he will ONLY THEN resort to removing the teeth necessary - where the gums are inflamed. Regardless, he said a full extraction should cost around $700.I cancelled her surgery as soon as we left and a couple hours later my Pumpkin seems in great spirits.Lesson learned: always seek the advice of more than one, even two, medical professionals - some of them are crooks. Frustrated with my previous vet (just so expensive, no consistent vet, long wait times for schedule appointment the majority of the time), I went to google and yelp for reviews and found this place ranked pretty highly and also close to my home (my cat HATES car rides, so that is important). They do a lot of surgeries, so appointment times are slim to come by but I mentioned my cat was older and had lost weight and they managed to work me in within a few days for an elder cat check up. The vet Dr. (Jason?) Wood saw me exactly at my appointment time, was personable, had a tech with him to help hold my cat in case he protested the exam (supposedly he was the model of good behavior comparatively), was efficient, gave me suggestions and options without pushing anything. I decided to have testing done, was amazed at the cost (much less than I'd paid at previous vet), and was told to call back on Monday (today). I did, was on hold for less than a minute waiting for Dr. Wood to talk to me, got the results, helpful suggestions for where to buy medication... I've only been there once, but I have to say, I was very impressed with the service. If you want a fancy place with wifi, don't go here. But if you want a vet that really seems to love animals, doesn't demand all sorts of tests, is up front (and accurate) about the costs, and runs on time---I have to say this is the place. Read Less

I love this place beyond words.  It is the holy grail of Vets.  I take the word of both Dr. Woods Sr. and Jr as seriously as I would MY OWN doctor, who I trust my LIFE with.I have to say 1 thing: Most of the comments I have seen have regarded the front desk.  I can say that the front desk of ANY business is a BUSY place, especially with the volume of Customers at Balcones.  I can also tell you, if you have never been in a font of house position, that it is HARD to be 100% smiling and accommodating 100% of the time.  I have been in a position similar, and this may shock you, but sometimes I have had a bad day, which may or may not have effected the experience of others.  Guess what, ya'll? Get over yourselves, it happens.I have never ONCE had these ladies be rude to me as long as I was patient, understanding of their limitations, and friendly myself.  I know it is hard to do with a sick animal, sometimes we let emotions get the best of us, but I think they truly understand THAT kind of emotion.  What they, and I, do not understand, are people who think that because they have been coming to this establishment for 20+ yrs they are "entitled" to immediate treatment.  Life doesn't work that way.  Yes, I call them first. Yes, they usually can accommodate my emergency.  Yes, I have at times been told they could not (VERY rarely, and once they recommended me going to the closest vet possible because they thought the drive may not be the healthiest option for my pup who was having an allergic reaction).  No, I would never hold the amount of time I have been seeing them or the amount of money I have spent as a bargaining tool or rationale for them not being able to put EVERYTHING aside for me.Be a somewhat pleasant person and you may be treated pleasantly.  They have enough business, they do not require yours.  It is a PRIVILEGE to be treated here, not a RIGHT.Okay, I am done.  Keep up that great work ya'll! I have read the previous reviews and can't believe some of them. I've been going to Dr. Woods for over twenty five years on and off (I've moved, but I always make the drive for anything other than routine visits, which I do with Dr. Graef in Taylor, also a great vet, but doesn't have all the equipment needed for some situations) Dr. Woods has always been so caring while being truthful and informative, explaining all the options for my elderly dogs, Don't believe the previous review about waiting two weeks. I've called many times for a semi serious situation and they've always fit me in within a day or two at the most, and of course if there's an emergency (I've had two snake bitten dogs) you're right in the door with either Dr. Woods or his son. Dr. Woods worked on my beloved Bonnie for two hours trying to save her life after being snake bitten. I can't say enough about my good experiences over the years with Dr. Woods and his son, Dr. Woods more recently. I know the reception staff is busy and can be businesslike at times, (friendlier lately, I must say) but overall, I would rate the whole team as A+. They can't never seem to find the right note card every time I went there and depends on me for H & P (history and physical). Last time we took a very sick cat there and he suggested to put her on a renal diet. I was very suspicious of the ""little treatment."" I took the cat to a cat specialist. It turned out my cat was about to have renal failure and was severe dehydrated. My cat ended up in the cat hospital for 3 days to receive IV hydration, vitamins and monitoring. It may cost more but I need a vet that can remember my cat's and dog's name and their medical history. They should not depend on me as the only source for all their medical history because they can't find the file all the time. Read Less

Knowing how expensive a trip to the Vet can be, I was apprehensive about calling to discuss my dog's condition. I just wanted to discuss possibilities for the condition and possibly avoid the trip to the Vet but I figured I would hear ""you will have to bring the dog in to be examined"". That isn't what I heard. The person who answered the phone took the time to listen to my dog's symptoms and the fact that he had the symptoms before. At no time did she say I had to bring him in. She even said I could try the antibiotics and cortizone treatments I had used the last time. This Vet has seen my dog before but only for annual exams. It was very pleasant to talk with someone who respected the knowledge that I had about my dog's symptoms and that we could discuss options. It is nice to hear that if I think it's allergies like it was the last time that I can just go ahead and give him his meds from last time even though they didn't see him for that or prescribe the meds. And on the other hand it's nice to hear that there were other options, to bring him in and get a shot to ""jump start"" the treatment. I just want my dog to be comfortable so after a wonderful conversation with this woman, I opted to bring my dog in for an exam and based on the exam hopefully get a quicker start to treatment. I was so pleased last year with the Vet and the Vet Tech when I brought him in for his annual exam and now I am even more pleased. And the fees are so reasonable. Read Less

This week Dr. Woods and his staff saved the life of my dog Ike who had pancreatitis. We are so relieved and feel very blessed that we found this practice. I have been here over 10 times and never left feeling that I had been overcharged or under treated. The staff is very hard working and they make an effort to make their services affordable which is not the case in Austin proper. Dr. Woods is so generous with his time that you feel guilty. I do not think the general public understands the stress that technicians and staff are under at Animal Hospitals and I learned that when the staff here had to help me in 2009 with the death of my dog Otis. The veterinary business is very hard on receptionists and techs I recommend that people show them the same respect that they are expecting because you do not know what pet traumas and grieving pet owners they have had to deal with before you. Friends and family who have followed me here are super happy. Thank you guys. Patrick Read Less

Brought my cat for allergies and he was given a steroid shot... all very reasonable. Cat had a reaction 2 weeks later which I understand now can sometimes happen with cats. Obviously there was no way this could have been known. However, they should have caught this when I brought him back. They then proceeded to over hydrate him and sent him home with me when he was breathing much too hard but of course, I assumed he was ok as they sent him home with me. The next day he went into congestive heart failure and I spent $$$$ at the emergency vet, with another vet (because I was not going to bring him back to this vet!!) and a cardiologist. He's fine now but no thanks to this vet. Yes, they're more reasonable in the pricing but at what cost???? Read Less

They never tell you you need extra (pricey) stuff unless your fur baby truly needs it. They are very well priced, too!! I would give them 10 stars if I could :) Also a shout-out to Katy, the groomer who works out of the office. She is AMAZING!! Read Less

Dr. Wood helped us through two emotional decisions concerning our dog. When our dog had a disease that could not be cured, he was empathetic and kind. His staff knew our dog and my kids and treated us like family. We have continued to go to Dr. Wood because of the high quality care and personalized treatment. My husband grew up working for a vet, so he knows what to look for. We had not look no further when we found Balcones Animal Hospital. They take great care of your pet over the weekends too. We have referred many friends to Dr. Wood and all have been pleased with his service and care. Read Less

My Boxer dog had a little accident last night and needed stitches. Went to another vet (24 hours) and they tried to make me pay $650 for cleaning and stitching my dog... they also had to put her to sleep AND keep her overnight. I refused so they came back with another quote to clean and drugs (pain and antibiotics)... 150$. Just cleaning! no stitches! I brought her back home call my regular vet (Balcones Animal Hospital) on their emergency line. They asked me many questions and told me to wait until the morning and be there early. I went... 30 minutes later I was out of there... My dog was cleaned, stitched with antibiotics for $117. No putting to sleep... no keeping for the day. She is next to me... happy and sleeping. in 10 days will go back to remove the stitches. I love this VET. Older gentlemen that has been around and know how to deal with animals. My Boxer love them! Staffs are friendly and all of them loves animals. Read Less

I have been taking my dogs to Dr. James Woods since 1976 and he has always been a caring wonderful vet. He especially is great at dealing with end of life issues and his compassion makes difficult decisions about beloved dogs easier. I took in a new rescue dog yesterday and he assessed her health and told me he appreciated that I had saved her. I have also seen his son Dr. Jason Woods and he is just as wonderful as his father. Read such great reviews for Balcones Animal Hospital that I decided to try it today. Took all 3 of my dogs just for a general checkup. One of them had an ear infection. They were very personable, gave me lots of general information for keeping my pets healthy and affordable, and really loved on my pets too. Best of all, the cost was so low I couldn't believe it. They charged me what I would have expected to be the amount for 1 dog for all 3 dogs and most vets charge even more than that. Definitely recommend them. I had no problem getting an appt. and when I went there was only 1 other dog there. Highly recommend them. Read Less

We have taken our four-legged children to Dr. Wood for years. Everything from surgery (minor routine spays to major surgery for bladder stones) to check-ups and shots, to frantic sick animal calls.I know a lot of reviews mention not being able to get an appointment. I just now called and was offered either a tomorrow or the next day morning appointment. Yes, there have been times when they have been incredibly busy. Just like any other medical provider. But they do their best, and they truly care about both the pets, and their owners. I have never in my life met a more compassionate vet. (Either of them). They take the best care of all our family's cats, dogs, and rats. (Unfortunately, they do not do birds! I wish they did!) Read Less

Finally, through a referral, I found the vet I've been looking for. I have been driving out of town, over 2 hrs each way, to take my pets to someone I trust. My pets are very dear to me, to say the least, and I have had a terrible experience with The Cat Hospital on Pond Springs Rd who refused me help and thereby crippled my cat. They didn't know what to do and even though another vet told them what to do they charged me $200. You won't have any problems with Balcones vets. Price is only one consideration, you want to trust your vet with your pet's life and I trust these people immensely. Read Less

The fees is definitely the cheapest. However, it takes about two weeks to get an appointment. So you can only rely on them for regular checkup. Don't wait that long to take your sick pet to the vet! They don't have a patient file system. All they put the patient's ""information"" on note cards.

Read Less
