I am so disappointed by this Banfield location! Over the past 3-4 years, we have seen a steady decline in quality and attentiveness from the employees. The Vets and support staff are clueless and have no idea what "communication" means.
Over 3 weeks ago, my pet had a rash (which he has had before in the past which resolved with Simplicef), so I took him in to be evaluated. I was told that they were too busy and to try a different Banfield location. At their recommendation, I drove up to the Techridge location to be seen. He was evaluated and given antibiotics, although it was a different antibiotic this time which did not help and allowed the bacterial infection worsen. After our 3rd follow up at Balcones Banfield (and $400 later), we had a culture performed because the rash had worsened. After much insistence, we finally received a prescription for Simplicef - but only 1/2 prescription course pending culture results. I was disappointed, but optimistic that we were finally on the right track. I was told that I would be called with results in a few days and the other 1/2 of the prescription would be released to me "if it was necessary".
Well, 10 days later, I still had no response and we had to take our dog to the ER at Banfield Southpark Meadows for IV fluids, antibiotics and pain medication because the bacterial infection had progressed too far. He was saved but needed to stay on antibiotics.
Now, 3 weeks have passed, and I had finished the antibiotics and the infection (although improving) was not cleared yet. I called the Balcones location again to get culture results and was told that there was "no results that they could see". I was told to continue the antibiotics and steroids but when I went to the location to pick them up, they would not release them to me!?!?!
Get your act together Banfield Balcones! I will NOT be back to this location. Read Less

Here's the scoop with Banfield: You're going to a chain. That means what it always means -- it's more clinical, more paperwork, less warm/fuzzy... but also less expensive. This was pretty important to me when I had to get my cat's teeth cleaned. Yep. Apparently that's a thing. Growing up with cats and dogs and fish and whatever other animal we could adopt, we basically fed them whatever was cheapest and made sure they had water. Those were the good old days when you didn't know. (Btw, all of those animals lived for really really long time.) But now I know you have to brush their teeth and stuff. Cost at a local vet for cleaning and potentially extractions: $400 - $800Cost at Banfield for same: $150 - $300Turns out, she didn't need extractions so it was on the cheaper side. Do I feel like I'm letting a local business down a little by not spending the money? Yes. But did I get to eat the rest of the month? Also yes. They docs at Banfield don't have to pay for their overhead or solicit clients or purchase pricey software -- they're just there. As employees. I still take Gypsy to the local doc for all of her routine stuff because I think they care more. For the stuff that's really going to take a bite out of my wallet, I appreciate the option. Read Less

I'm taking care of my dad's dog and he was having a very hard time holding in his pee so I took him to the vet to get his urine tested to make sure that he didn't have a bladder infection. We waited in the exam room for 45 minutes before a tech came in and asked what we were in for. After another 20 minutes the vet came in to tell us that the issue was just a lack of training and that we didn't need to come in. We had to fight the vet to get him to take a urine sample and test it after he essentially told us we were wasting his time. He then came back to tell me that the urine came back with a very high pH and crystals on the way to forming bladder stones. He then directed us to a food that was supposed to balance the pH and get rid of the crystals without telling us the cause of the imbalance and without explaining what the food would do (we found out on our own later that the cause of the crystals was due to poor protein in his diet). The prescription food itself was nutritionally worse than the food that got him sick in the first place. The vet didn't explain, either, that the food would cause increased urination-instead of dissolving the crystals or redressing the lack of protein, it would just make him pee more.
This would have been bad, but it was compounded by the lack of interest and utter lack of service shown by the staff and veterinarian for the dog. They didn't care at all that he was in pain or that we were ruling out all possible issues, but that we seemed to be wasting their time. We were told later that the reason we waited so long was that they were short staffed, yet we heard a tech say goodbye to everyone in the back room and leave for the day while we were waiting.
The whole episode lasted nearly 2 and a half hours in which the vet made us feel like idiots, the staff ignored us and no one explained the underlying problem with the dog. Read Less
