Amazing experience with Dr. Walker. We had an emergency on our hands, and someone referred us to brykerwood since they take walkins (our vet couldn't fit us in even though it was an emergency). He was so great and really took the time to explain things, even help out with getting records together for our appt with our regular vet the next day. We spent so much time and money keeping our dog on IV fluids at our regular vet, and at the end of the day couldn't get the surgery we needed there, so we called Dr. Walker at Brykerwood, and he was able to fit us in even though they were all booked! The surgery went well, and Dr. Walker stayed with us every step of the way. He gave us frequent updates and checked up on her after, as well. He personally called us a few days later! We are definitely going back to Brykerwood the next time we have vet needs! Read Less

I have been taking my 13 year old maltipoo to Brykerwood, specifically Dr. Baker, for the past 3 years, and I'm convinced my fur-baby is still alive and rockin due to Dr. Baker's care.  Every staff member is so warm and friendly.  We have had several issues with diabetes, colitis, UTIs, collapsing esophagus, and other issues, and every time I call they are quick to discuss issues with Dr. Baker or another vet on staff to figure out the best course of care for my sweet fur-baby.  One particularly memorable experience is when my mother accidentally dropped my dog's insulin over a holiday weekend.  Brykerwood was closed and it's illegal for other vets to prescribe and fill an insulin prescription without a full blood curve and exam.  We called every open vet clinic in Austin but it couldn't be filled without great expense and time for the blood work.  I texted Dr. Baker our problem and she agreed to meet us on a Sunday of a long holiday at the clinic to replace my dog's insulin.  Her love of animals and compassion for the pets and owners is unparalleled.  We LOVE Brykerwood and you will too! This past weekend, we were visiting friends in Austin.  Our 14-year old Yorkie, Sasha, became quite ill on Friday evening / Saturday morning.  So, we took Sasha to Brykerwook Vet for an examination.  Based on her condition, the staff immediately stabilized Sasha so that they could properly exam her.  Unfortunately, the prognosis was not optimal and we had to make the difficult decision to let Sasha go peacefully.  However, the staff at Brykerwood were incredible.  They took such good care of Sasha and us during this difficult time.  They were definitely a blessing.  Thank you Brykerwood. Brykerwoods just helped us through the worst period of time any pet owner can go through and that is "the end." We so appreciate the professionalism, kindness, and love the staff and vet showed to our Millie as she left us. We were allowed to arrange and pay for everything up front. We were also allowed to bring all of Millie's toys and familiar things in with us. The vet was so kind and loving. She talked to Millie and treated here with so much dignity--it was as if this vet was losing her very own pet! The vet gently talked us thru the process and assured us there was immediate backup available if things went wrong. She walked thru the process and allowed us to feel our feelings---all of them--every single good and bad one. We were allowed the time to collect ourselves so that we could drive home. The vet gave us what we asked for as we left that was still attached to Millie and staff informed us of next steps. Staff members were crying too. Also, very conveniently, there was no one in the waiting room when we arrived and when we were leaving. Don't know if that was accidentally or on purpose. If on purpose, it was a very kind thing for them to arrange to help us--and it DID help us. Thank you Brykerwoods family. We will also hold you dear. And, when we decide in the future to get that next puppy dog, our first stop will be you!!! Read Less

My family has been going to Brykerwoods Vet for over 30 years and would not go anywhere else.  Typically we see Dr Biehle, but it is not always possible.  Last week I had to do the most painful thing I have ever done in my life, put my beloved 14 1/2 year old dog down.  Dr. Biehle was not there and we were seen by Dr. Moore.  My family, and most importantly, my animal were treated with deep dignity, respect and kindness during this agonizing moment.  Dr. Moore took us to the green field outside the office where I held my beloved angel and she passed peacefully in a sunbeam.  I am grateful to Dr. Moore and the Brykerwoods team for their high level of care during this agonizing moment. I just met Dr. Greg today for the first time, just new to me, and he was so friendly. Sat with me to chat about any questions or concerns I might have the whole time while the tech took Pocket back for her vaccinations and labs. I was newly impressed that a fully booked clinic doctor took the time to sit there with me and get to know me and my dog during that time. Plus, Pocket came back from her shots just as happy as can be, so they must have made it as calming and gentle as possible! Thanks to everyone at Brykerwood, as usual, for the excellent care. My family has been coming here for our pets since we moved to Austin 17 years ago. We started out with just small animals, but the quality of care was obvious even then. Dr. Biehle even offered to do surgery on my sister's hamster rather than just writing it off as "just a hamster" (we ended up not going through with that but the offer was kind!) We've never considered using another vet because the quality of care and compassion all of the vets, techs, and receptionists have shown us over the years has been tremendous. I've continued to use them as an adult for my own pets. I will say, their vaccine prices and exam fee are too much for me to use them for that in my current financial state (I go to emancipet) but nothing that's over what you'd see at any other full service clinic. So, while I do my "maintenance" care at emancipet (Which I highly recommend as well, they're wonderful if you don't mind a loooong wait time), I would never take my dogs anywhere else for other problems that pop up.My shar pei mix Harley has had a particularly rough time over the years. She has frequent ear infections (yay shar pei ears!) and her skin is very thin and punctures easily. We're usually in several times a year for these issues. We saw Dr. Schmalz a lot at first and have been seeing more of Dr. Moore lately as well. Both ladies are amazing vets and I've never felt like I've been taken advantage of or overcharged. In fact, they've been very helpful in trying to keep my bills as low as possible (helpful while I was in school). Dr. Moore in particular has been wonderful with Harley (who loves her despite all the ear-prodding). We've also seen Dr. Baker a number of times and she's extremely knowledgeable as well.I worked in several vets offices during college and have seen some pretty unsavory business practices in that time, especially at a corporate vet that will remain nameless. But I've never felt nickel and dimed at Brykerwood. I'm surprised to see any negative reviews on Yelp, honestly we've been coming here nearly two decades and it's been wonderful every time. Sorry for the long rambling review, I just really love this place! Please give them a shot, support your local businesses. Read Less

I came in with my first puppy for my first vet experience ever. I waited for about 45 minutes outside in the sun with two kids, since my puppy wasn't fully vaccinated they didn't want him inside.Instead of asking me specifics about his symptoms, they ran a test and gave him a shot. Then, she watched him diagnosed him with kennel cough. Would have been nice if she'd seen me, asked me questions, made sure she understood what I was saying (because I was pretty clear I don't know anything about sick dogs), and monitored the dog before running up the bill.I declined one unnecessary antibiotic and ended up taking the second only to get home and read that kennel cough can be cured without it. In retrospect, now that I know I should have asked more questions, been forceful about seeing vet before the test, and asked how much the shot was, I realized I could have spent $85 less than what I spent. Liked this vet for a while. A few of the vets I really liked, others are so-so. The front desk is hit or miss, there is only one girl who is truly nice. My breaking point was when my cat was sick and they acted like I was over reacting about it. So instead of them helping me find out what was wrong with him I was forced to go the ER and pay triple what I would have at their office. I was correct and he had a foreign body in his intestines. Then when I called Brykerwood the next morning to let them know of their mistake and ask if they could preform the surgery at their office, instead of me paying a premium for the ER, they stated that it was a holiday weekend, so no.  So much for actually caring about animals. Today we tried out Brykerwood Vet clinic after they reached out to us on Twitter. I'm a first time pet owner and have had my pup for a year and a half. I wasn't thrilled with the service and treatment at my last vet, but just thought "that's what this is like". People came and went and nobody seemed to object...not that it was horrible, just very impersonal.Today Dr. Schmalz showed my little guy such kindness and personal care that I can't believe I didn't seek out a new vet sooner. Baxter loved her too...even showed her his belly (a privilege I've seen reserved only for a select few). We had an exam, heart worm test, ear treatment, and monthly heart worm/flea treatments at a fraction of what I was paying. This place is busy...my guy was anxious in the waiting room because he wanted to play with everyone and so many fur babies were in and out. But the quality of care, response and professionalism were more than apt to handle the volume and I left satisfied and impressed. I love Dr. Stephanie Baker! The first time I brought my dog in was on a semi-emergency basis (not really an emergency, but not a typical first visit) when I noticed my dog's dew claw had cracked up the center and the dangling half was causing her some pain. (Our old vet had just retired and we hadn't yet found a new one.)Dr. Baker introduced herself to my dog and gave her a few minutes to get relaxed before bringing in a tech to assist. A quick dose of anesthetic right around the claw and then another quick move with some pliers was all it took to get the loose piece out. My dog barely flinched. Dr B wrapped up her paw and gave us a few chewable pain killers for the next few days while she healed up. She also recommended putting her on a fish oil supplement or a salmon-based food to help keep her claws from being so brittle. We did and it's definitely made a difference! I love solutions like that. The second time was for her routine yearly exam and that also went smoothly. Dr B listened to her heart and lungs, palpated her stomach, and checked out her ears along with the required shots. I appreciated that she took her time and did a thorough hands-on check up.

Read Less

I don't know what I would have done without Brykerwood Vet. Dr. Werner is amazing, and I've heard the other dogs are amazing. Dr. Werner helped us with a horrible case of megaesophagus, bloating, and recurring aspiration pneumonia. She was so compassionate, empathetic, and really cared about our dog. I adore this vet and it's staff who were nothing but kind and wonderful. She was part of one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make in my life and I feel comforted because of her advice and medical knowledge. I have also had her care for our foster dog, and she was amazing and cleared up his horrible ear infection by starting with the least invasive treatment and only progressing to a deep ear cleaning when absolutely  necessary.
