Dessau Veterinary Clinic

Austin, Texas
General Info
Dessau Veterinary Clinic located in Austin provides forward-thinking veterinary services developed through analysis of behavior patterns alongside seasonal dangers and community habits which affect pet health throughout Texas. The visit starts with discussions about daily rhythms which include alterations in energy levels, dietary habits, social interactions, sleep quality, and environmental stressors. The examination progresses to include full-body assessments where medical professionals conduct joint testing oral health checks dermatological screenings and posture reviews. Veterinarians document responses to tactile stimuli and applied pressure to assess potential pain, muscle tension, or movement restrictions. Observers consult historical data to identify patterns suggesting metabolic alterations musculoskeletal stress or behavioral modifications. The Dessau Veterinary Clinic provides diagnostic screenings along with vaccination programs and conducts blood and fecal tests while offering nutritional consults and pain management plans. The patterns of visitor activity show how local climate affects healthcare interest—with spring bringing allergy concerns, summer seeing parasite attention, and colder months driving arthritis reviews. Animals from breeds prone to anxiety disorders or long-term ailments may attend irregular milestone check-ups to ensure thorough observation. Pet owners receive detailed summaries alongside habit logs and follow-up care intervals while having access to optional digital check-in options. Caretakers of senior pets or multiple animals can seek adaptive scheduling along with telehealth services and behavior-associated recheck systems to maintain manageable care routines. Through meticulous observational methods combined with seasonal adjustments, Dessau Veterinary Clinic equips Austin and Texas pet owners to predict and respond to their pets' needs, turning veterinary appointments into a proactive care schedule.

TL;DR: Great with all animals (even ones who are not vet-friendly)! At first I went to Dessau because it was the closest vet to my place, because who wants to drive more than 10 mins with a cat? I have an older cat who is not vet-friendly. He is easily (negatively) aroused and may be "famous" at Dessau for his antics (growling, hissing, howling, biting, running, scratching, etc). Yes this is an 8 year old cat! After our first visit, the staff and I have a routine to keep appts as efficient and best for the cat as possible. Keeping him in the car until a room is ready (so he isn't aroused by all the other animal scents), unscrewing the lid to his carrier (so theres no reaching in and allowing him to bite), covering him with a towel (so he feels hidden), then doing the vet business. Even with a less than happy patient, the vet was able to diagnose him with a bladder infection (versus what I thought may be constipation) due to stress. I always worry that because he is a tough patient, I won't be able to figure out what is wrong when something happens. Dessau staff and vets completely calm that fear completely as they haven been so GREAT with him -- along with my other kitten who may be the complete opposite and a perfect patient. Read Less

I thought I needed surgery to remove a growth in between my new senior dog’s toes. I was fully ready to spend $700 because I thought it was hurting his paw, HOWEVER, right before I scheduled it, Dr. Campbell came back in and said she didn’t think that was giving him any pain and set him up on some arthritis chews and steroids. Her staff was great too!! I’m totally impressed. Customer for life!! I really appreciate the honesty and the professionalism of everybody there. Read Less

I am so thankful that we found this vet clinic. I was rushing to find somewhere to have my dog looked at for possible lymphoma. When the results came back, they were extremely detailed when telling me about the cancer, the prices of everything and the possibilities of how long she would survive. They were honest and made me feel reassured. Dr. Kampbell kept in touch, would call back when I had questions and even helped me with needing help figuring out if it was my dogs time or not. This morning I took my dog in to be put to sleep due to cancer eating her body. Dr Kampbell was so warm and generous. So was Mary (the vet assistant). They allowed me time to spend with my dog, and Mary made me a paw printed Londen's paw. I just can't begin to brag enough or thank them enough for their compassionate hearts. Thank you! Read Less

The staff was very friendly, and their boarding facility is affordable and nice. I went to this vet when I first got my dog because it was close to my home and Austin Pets Alive had them on an approval list for vets that would give my dog her free check up. This was in 2014, but I keep receiving emails reminding me of the experience I had here. My dog had lost about 10 pounds since I had adopted her and when the vet came to look at her she just got very stern with me about how skinny my dog was. I had never had a problem with any of the pets I've had and had no idea what to do, but she didn't really give me any tips or ask about any other problems I had with the dog. I never went back because I wasn't offered any help with it, just blamed for her weight loss. I am a very experienced pet owner, so to be treated like I was first time pet owner, had just adopted this dog for selfish reasons, and was torturing it wasn't helpful. I know this wasn't the doctors intention, but this is how I was made to feel. I uped her food intake to 4 cups a day (Because naturally thats what you would do if someone told you your dog needed to gain weight) with a can of dog food daily just to get her to eat it, all first ingredient meat mid grade dog food and it kept her at 65 pounds with incredible difficulty. Just getting this dog to eat is hard enough; I could drop a steak on the ground and she would consider eating it. Then I took her to Corner Vet in East Austin and talked to them about it and they gave me some real help(and a beer), offered me some probiotics noting it could be some intestine disorder, and discussed that some dogs just are naturally skinny. Turns out she gets colitis.  I think this clinic could've improved my experience if they had been more diligent in figuring out why my dog would've lost that much weight that quickly instead of placing direct blame on me. It wasn't helpful to me or my dog. Providing good experiences at vets for both the pet and the owner is crucial if we want people to keep caring for their animals the best way possible. Read Less

We have been taking our large breed dog here for almost two years and we love the people at Dessau Vet Clinic! They treat us and our dog like family! We boarded him over Christmas last year and they sent us pictures of him on Christmas day. When our dog had a terrible stomach issue and spent the night at the emergency vet, my husband showed up with him when the office opened at 7am to see if they could take him for the day. Not only did the take him, but the staff immediately called the vet to get instructions (she wasn't in yet because they has just opened) about what she wanted so he would be comfortable. Then when he was released, the staff called us the next day just to check on him. Plus they offer daycare services and our dog almost always comes home tired and happy. The rates are reasonable and the daycare only $15 a day. They are careful to make sure the dogs are grouped with friendly dogs and separate any personality conflicts among the dogs. And when it's hot, they are extremely careful to make sure no dog is outside more than 15 minutes. The vet is adamant about avoided heat -related sicknesses for dogs in their care. A full grooming appointment is around $40 and a pristine puppy is sent home with us overtime. Plus I have to give them props for lifting our dog into the bathtub a few times.  We took our cat here when he got sick. He ended up with extreme kidney failure and the vet was so nice and so understanding as she explained the issue. We tried a few treatment routes and the staff kept a close eye on him, as well as updated us frequently. We eventually had to put him down and the staff was really supportive. Seriously, we just found this office when googling nearby vets after getting a puppy. I'm so glad this is the office we called and I can't imagine taking our pets anywhere else in Austin. Read Less

I got a new puppy from a breeder and was recommended by a friend to this clinic.  I made an appointment for 5:30 pm since I work 9-5 every day and got stuck behind an accident.  they close at 6pm and I arrived at 5:55pm.  I felt terrible and said I could reschedule but the office staff and vet were friendly and said no we can see your puppy now (!! so great).  They stayed late and didn't seem to rush through all the questions I had about training and shot schedules.  I even had a question about her eyes as she kept running into things and the vet took the extra time to do some research for me behind the office.  They are more affordable than most vets in Austin (I believe the people complaining about price either have never been to a vet before or are use to using Austin's low cost subsidized animal care center) and provide preventative protection through a special pharmacy called roadrunner for cheap continuous preventative care for ticks and fleas.  I will be returning and am very happy with their competency and service! Having a single vet is extremely important for your pet and I'm happy I found mine with my first visit. Wellness exam was in the $60 range and the fecal exam was $19.  I didn't need shots so that was about everything - they provided me with a one month flea and tick prevention for free, puppy treats for free, some brochures about dog food and preventative care, and 5 training tips for difficult dogs.  I didn't really need these as I have another dog but the gesture was nice. I called and made an appointment for my cat because she was refusing to use her litter box.  Normally this means a UTI.  I arrived at little late, only to discover that I was at the wrong place.  I'm new to the area and could only remember the vet was on Dessau road.  The woman laughed with me at my mistake and said the doctor could fit me in if I could wait a few mins.I gladly agreed and sat down to wait.  The Dr came out shortly and finished discussing follow up with the previous pet mom.  She turned to me and smiled a huge smile and welcomed me back to the treatment room. My cat rolled around and acted likes she's never received any attention in her life as the doctor felt her stomach and bladder. They ran the urine test which came back negative and then we talked about stresses that could be causing the box issues. We talked for a good 20 minutes about how to help my cat.  It cost me a decent chunk of change for the tests, but not more than any other vet.  I would gladly pay it again for the sincere caring that I received.  My cat was happy to get all that attention too.THANKS!!! I have worked at a dog training center and a vet clinic previously before moving here as well as being involved in agility and therapy dog work, so I have a lot of dog experience. I have never seen a vet as horrible as Dr. Campbell. When she walked in she did not introduce herself so I didn't know she was the vet at first. She had a very cold demeanor and talked down to me the entire time. At one point she gave me misleading information that she admitted wasn't true when I called her out on it. I only came in for routine vaccinations but she did not listen to a word I said and seemed interested only in insulting my dog. He is a one year old mixed breed and she was shocked that he was healthy. She kept implying that he would be very sick later in life and when I got concerned about why she admitted it was based on NOTHING but her own breed prejudice. She also assumed he was a puppy mill dog, which I found highly insulting. She spouted off a number of insults critiquing his looks, such as "he is 10 inches too tall" and none of them were true. He sat perfectly the entire time and when he refused the treat she tried to give him she told me he was extremely shy and would need behavior work. Which again, was not true. I can only conclude that she is either wildly ignorant about dog behavior and the AKC breed standards or a manipulative liar. Either way, I was extremely offended and will never come back here again. I always have the best experiences here. The vet is so knowledgable, caring, and informative at all times. They are never trying to pin ridiculously expensive tests or treatments on us, which we are so appreciative of because it's hard to always think straight when you're worried about an animal that is your whole world. The rest of the staff are the same way and I always feel very comfortable and reassured when we're here. At another clinic, when I asked if they could check his eyesight, I was told there wasn't any particularly good way of doing that - just by watching his behavior. Here, immediately the vet did some quick pupil dilation tests in the dark and tossed him some treats to see his reactions. Long story short, this clinic is great and I don't ever want to have to take my dog elsewhere; even though we live 20 minutes away we will still be returning.Read Less

I've experienced better." and it's true.  I hate to do that to a clinic that has good reviews thus far, but my experience as a long time dog owner leaves a good deal to be desired.  My boys needed their vaccines and are in otherwise good condition - they were able to fit me in same day which was great.  The clinic is clean and spacious enough for a few "patients" to be there at once.  I filled out the one sheeter and was moved to a room.  I provided the boy's records and waited patiently.  The records were lengthy and there was no summary, so they had to go through them.  However, what I experienced with the vet tech shuffling back and forth between me and the veterinarian was ridiculous.  The vet (Dr. Waage) could have easily (and more conveniently) just come in and discussed the records with me.  Instead the poor vet tech was left to provide feedback between us and I left to overhear the vet's responses immediately outside of the room.  Long story short they don't recognize breeder/at home vaccinations - which I get - but is ridiculous if I have them recorded by a reputable breeder.  So that annoyed me, and took longer than it needed to.  The vet tech then came in with a trainee tech to take the fecal/blood draws.  The tech was supposed to be showing the trainee how to do so - but couldn't even manage a blood draw (...on a hairless chinese crested).  She had to attempt several times which no one wants to watch their dog go through.  It was unnecessary.  Next dog up (hairy Tibetan Terrier) and she *doused* the boy's arm in rubbing alcohol - so much so that I had to squeeze it dry after she was done - in excess.  A normal person would have picked a spot and used a cotton ball.  She had similar trouble with the blood draw.  That poor trainee.  The vet then came in and things were...clinical.  Nothing good or bad really.  No real interaction with the dogs, no insights, just the checklist. When I went to pay and leave there were several folks in the waiting area and things appeared unorganized with several staff members there.  I was going to get the one boy groomed, but was just too annoyed to even ask at that point.  (Two well checks, Rabies (3yr), Heartworm test, and Dis/Parvo (one) cost $290Overall - will I go back? No, I will look for a warmer, more professional clinic.Would I recommend? Meh. Read Less

I found this vet on Yelp and a friend also recommended this place.  I just needed to get my dog's nails trimmed, so I called and made an appt. Once we arrived they took us to one of the rooms and I filled out the paper work while the techs worked on his nails.  They both were so sweet with my dog, and myself.  I loved that I didn't have to wait an hour, like most other vets, and the nail trim was a great price.  They had several dogs staying there, and liked that they were all loose in the back yard to play and nap as they please, and not caged.  They also do grooming.  An all in one stop shop for all of your pet care needs! I will go back when its time for his boosters and will give another review for an update. The first visit was very enjoyable and I don't really see how it would be any different. Read Less

After buying a house in NE Austin we finally got a dog. We were looking around for a new vet and decided to try this one since it's so close to our house. Our new puppy and older cat became immediate patients here. And they are AWESOME. We've since acquired another dog and cat and now all 4 are patients at Dessau. The first dog has gotten a lot of day boarding here and the staff was always great about bringing their dogs in to play with him. They've seen him since he was a puppy and he just loves it there. They were also great when our younger dog had some complications. Dr. Campbell and her staff are just fantastic, especially Nikki and Amy who are very familiar with our dogs. Very highly recommended!

Everything they said seemed to directly contradict the detailed paperwork I received from Austin Humane Society when I adopted the cat and spoke it length with people who had cared for him for months, these creeps looked at him for five minutes. My husband and I (and our many fur babes) absolutely love Dr. Kellee Campbell and her staff.  They have been exceptionally wonderful no matter what the experience has been - vaccinating and providing guidance on our new puppy,  care for older dogs' various health needs, and especially the palliative care and then gentle support of euthanizing my sweet elderly dog.  We have tried a number of vet clinics in Austin over the years, none compare to Dessau Vet Clinic. Today I had to take my 15 year old cat to the vet . A new vet for the first time. I was very pleased with the Dr. Female doctor I'm guessing was Dr. Campbell I don't remember if she introduced herself but I was more worried about my cat then her name.. She was very nice and took her time with us. She didn't rush Us in and out like most doctors do. She genuinely cares about the animals and she was very thorough. She made sure she checked everything out and gave me information to take home. She apologized for my wait time in between tests which I did not mind I was there for her service. The technicians were great and very nice and friendly. The vet tech administer fluids without any problems at all  and  Sassy did not even react  to the needle. The office was very clean, and spacious. The dogs outside were very well taken care of and happy. I will definitely go back and take my young man Franklin if he is ever in need. It's nice to know that I found a great vet so close to my new home. I felt the rates were fair though I did have to opt out of 2 more test that I would have liked to have had run to make it affordable. Read Less

I took in a stray recently that needed a good grooming badly.  Yorkie mix.  Emancipet helped me get started on vaccinations and such. For grooming needs I tried Petsmart and a small independent groomer but neither could get past a nail trim. My current vet (for cats) does not have grooming services so I thought I'd try Dessau Vet Clinic first since they DO have grooming services. I discussed her situation with the staff and was ready to go with sedation as I was DESPERATE to get my dog groomed.  I received a call a few hours after I dropped her off expecting them to ask for permission to sedate her but much to my surprise they told me she was done!  She looks great!  On top of all that I felt the cost for flea/tick/heartworm prevention was reasonable.  DVC will be our long term vet.  AND, we'll start taking our three cats there, too!

The Yelp 2 star is "Meh.
