Worst experience EVER. The technician was rude and the doctor was not professional. It charged me almost 300 bucks for X-ray which was ok but the doctor wrote the bill very randomly. After the X-ray, she turned to another doctor and wanted to charge me more without a solid conclusion. She suggested my kitten going on an surgery which cost over 2000 while I consulted other vets and was told the surgery was unnecessary. Not professional at all as she can’t figure out the problem after touching my kittens leg getting her painful and viewing two X-rays. I would like to give 0 star if I could. Read Less

The vets and staff at Northwest are the most caring and compassionate I have ever met,  not just for pets, but also for owners,  and that's really important in my opinion.  The vets are up on all the latest treatments and they provide information on all options, but they are incredibly sensitive to family situations and don't judge your decisions. They are also incredibly kind.  Both Dr. Phillips and Dr. Harrington have guided my family through very rough times as our elderly dogs grew more and more ill until we finally had to make a decision no owner wants to make. They worked hard to be comforting and sensitive at a time that is difficult. They even sent my family flowers afterward to acknowledge our grief. Northwest Veterinary Hospital is wonderful,  and I whole heartedly recommend them for a lifetime of care for your pets. Read Less

We took our two cats in.  For whatever reason we did not click with the staff.  They were polite, pleasant, but I think maybe ultimately dog only people.  The vet explained everything she was doing and she was professional.  Anyway, I could not put my finger on what was off.  I brushed off my lack of connection on me being spoiled by our prior vet.Well about a week later one cat started messing with his ears.  He has not had an ear issue in 4 years so it seemed odd, but I thought just a coincidence that he had just been in for his annual.  Then a day or so later the second cat seen that day, whom has never had ear issues in her 9 years with us, had nasty black goop in her ears.  I checked the two cats that did not go to this vet and no ear issues.  It could be a very bizarre coincidence that the ear issues happened in the two cats that went in for annuals and the two that did not go have no ear issues.  Regardless, I will not take another cat back to this office. I have been taking my dogs (several generations of pets over many years) to this vet with positive experiences. I board my dog here when we are away sometimes and they seem to have very caring staff who remember the pet's names and care about them. My previous dog was very well loved by particular care takers there and they looked forward to seeing him each time. They are no-pressure about buying products or services if you don't have the budget for all of it, but thorough in recommendations. Read Less

THE BEST OF THE BEST!  I cannot recommend Northwest Veterinary Hospital or Dr. Lisa Harrington enough.  SHE ALONE DESERVES 10 STARS!!! We followed Dr. Harrington from South Austin to her new location...SHE IS THAT AMAZING!  In an industry that can sometimes be convoluted due to the number of patients, they see a day, Dr. Harrington stands out amongst her peers.  She truly cares about her patients, spends extra time when needed (you will never feel rushed!) and is an expert in her field.  Dr. Harrington has been my trusted vet for years now.  In 2013, I had to say goodbye to my first love, and best friend of 15 years. : (  I was devastated but I trusted that if there was anything else we could do she would have.   Pets are family. And in my case, my pets are my babies.  I would do anything for them and wholeheartedly trust Dr. Harrington as their veterinary for life. Read Less

Their diagnoses have been right every time, they're always available for questions, and they do what's right for your pet without running a lot of needless tests or trying to pressure you into services they don't need. I first came here in 2006 with my adult cat and am still a client with my now-adult dog. They've been taking care of him since he was a puppy. The people here are always friendly and have helped me put my 60-lb Aussie/Border Collie/Spaniel?? mix into my car when he couldn't jump in. Recently my dog had a malignant tumor removed and Dr. Phillips, the techs, and the desk staff were extremely sympathetic and comforting. (He's now cancer-free after Dr. Phillips performed surgery.) Dr. Phillips is not an alarmist but WILL take your pet's health seriously. He is a proponent of methods that are the least invasive but still address the problem at hand. Even though they have many clients, they always seem to remember my dog. The prices are very reasonable, and you aren't nickel and dimed here. Years ago, when my beloved cat had to be put down the office was incredibly kind - making a paw-print ornament for me and sending a floral arrangement. I have recommended Northwest Vet to every pet owner I know in Austin and trust them implicitly. Read Less

I have a big ol' rambunctious mastiff rescue and Dr. Philips and the entire team at Northwest Veterinary Hospital take the absolute best care of him. Bender can be a little overwhelming, but not for these professionals. Their knowledge, understanding, and love of animals shows through in their care. Bender has some tumor issues he is dealing with and I wouldn't trust his care to any other team but Dr. Philip's and the wonderful people at Northwest Vet Hospital. On a side note, they are also great for boarding. I don't have to board Bender very often, but when I do he always comes home happy, healthy and I can tell he has been very well cared for while I was gone. I cannot recommend this place enough. Right from the moment you walk through the door, everyone is super friendly. The vets and technicians are also fantastic. They all know our dog and greet us and her at the door; now, she's not scared of the vet at all! We see Dr. Phillips and Dr. Harrington; both are so nice and helpful. They always talk through all of our options whenever a health concern comes up, and they acknowledge that money can be a real concern and don't push for unnecessary procedures. They will also work with you to make a payment plan if needed and often have discount vaccine days and the like. Their Monday clinic is also really helpful because their hours get extended even more. Attentive and thoughtful to get my pet's needs, while also considering my time. Affordable, especially on discount day. They seem to have good team work between vet tech and vet, as well as check in staff and check out staff. Our discharge papers had our dogs pics on them (so they "can recognize them".....wow!). They recorded their chip numbers and have their pics.  Dr. Harrington was through in examining my 2 dogs, one of whom is 16 years old. There was ZERO UPSELL in procedures, test, or products. She even agreed that a dental cleaning was too much stress on my grandma dog (my other vet practically nagged me to give my dog these cleanings). This dog had gnarly teeth, but no infection and dental could kill her, as she's had a reaction to anesthesia. I appreciated Dr. Harrington for attending to my dogs needs. Finally, Dr. Harrington recognize that I'm immunosuppressed and changed my dogs live virus vaccination from traditional nasal spray to injection to keep me safe. That's good medicine. We're clients for life now. They get a 5 for the total experience. Read Less

Dr's Rhyne and Unflat are caring, accomplished and wow, just wonderful!  They treated my baby, Harry several months ago, a dental cleaning and tooth extraction. Let me preface my review by saying I gave a scathing review to Rosedale Veterinary, so I'm not prone to giving "fabulous" reviews, but rather, really spot-on honest ones.  Dr.Unflat examined Harry a while ago and sent him to a fantastic canine cardiologist, Dr. Charla Jones. They diagnosed his murmur and carefully did an complete ultrasound to detect the level. Based on Dr.Jones exam, we knew the proper type and amount of anesthesia for Harry. He's a Chihuahua.  Dr.Unflat even said that sometimes the heart murmur goes away once you clean the teeth, so I'm still praying/hoping, but well, it is what it is.  He's extremely healthy and active at 12. Dr. Unflat is from New York I think, and I very much like New Yorkers for their straight talking style where you're not guessing what they really mean. I say this with humor as being from Chicago for the past few years when I would hear "Bless his heart" I thought, "oh, that's so sweet, she's blessing that guy" not realizing what it really means! Us New Yorker's and Chicagoans like it straight up served cold with a twist!Dr.Rhyne led the multi-tooth extraction and cleaning.  All I can say at this point in the review is, come to this clinic and have these fine doctors treat your furry child. There's no point in going elsewhere, they are truly deserving of praise and respect.Harry says so! Read Less

I cannot find the words to express the heartfelt gratitude I have for the wonderful staff, vet techs and Dr. Phillips at Northwest Veterinary Hospital. My 15 yr. old dachshund was dying and after my new vet refused (very rudely) on Thursday to get us in, I was desperate to find someone so my pet would not have to suffer through the weekend,  I contacted Northwest Vet Hospital and within ten minutes received a call back that they would see us.The were compassionate, loving, sympathetic, told me to take all the time I needed, even though it was closing time.  Every person from the receptionist to the vet tech, to the doctor went out of their way to make this heart wrenching experience the most comfortable it could be.  One of the techs that didn't even see us until we were leaving stopped me to tell me she was sorry for my loss.Needless to say, I will not be returning to North Austin Vet on Burnet Road as I have found a new home for my remaining pet as I know he will receive the best, most compassionate care possible from the caring staff at Northwest Veterinary Hospital.Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.  We will see you soon to pick up our beloved pet's ashes and will be forever grateful for everything you have done for us and my treasured Sadie.Vicki McFadden Read Less

I've had good experiences here. The vet actually called to check  up on my animal after a procedure. I really appreciated that small town kind of attention. And when my cat was boarded, I could tell he got a lot of attention--everyone was sad to see him go and told me about things he did. They also keep things moving-I've never had to wait too long to get in a room or see a vet.And the vet i see is usally the same one. At my old place it was a rotating cast and that felt very impersonal. Only after a couple of visits, I felt like we had a relationship with this place where I never felt like that with the old one.Only one complaint--My dog gets ear infections a lot. My old vet would flush it and clean it and send me home with meds. This new vet doesn't do all that. They just tell you how to do it at home even though I would gladly pay them to just do it for me since i have two small kids and a dog that hates being messed with. Guess I should ask next time. I have mixed feelings about this place.  My cat got attacked by a neighbor cat and was definitely sore in an area on her lower back.  I needed to get her yearly vaccinations anyways, so I decided to take her in to preemptively take care of any complications from her battle.  The front office was accommodating and I was able to get an appointment the following morning.  My vet tech was super friendly and made my cat feel at ease.  He said that they were probably going to shave down the area where she was hurt and see from there.  He let me know the cost of the vaccinations and told me I'd have Dr. Gardial as my vet that day.  Dr. Gardial was cordial, but indifferent to what I was saying about my cat's back.  He never offered to shave the back and said there was probably nothing to worry about.  He even went as far to say that there was a good chance she was sensitive there due to fleas.  "What fleas?" should have been my question.  But I took his word for it, paid roughly $150 for the checkup and shots (that was a shocker!), and went on my merry way.  Well, the next morning, there was a large, swollen bump on her back.  I was not sure if it was from the vaccinations or from the cat attack, so I waited to see what would come of it.  About 3 days later, the bump busts, leading to a disgusting smelling abscess on her back.  I called and scheduled yet another appointment and got her in the next day.  Same tech, oblivious to the fact that we had met him before.  Kept calling my cat a boy, even when I said she over and over.  This time I had a different vet, though I'm at a loss for his name.  He seemed a bit baffled why the area had not been shaved down, nor an antibiotic shot had been administered to the area.  Surgery was scheduled immediately and I was left waiting.  It didn't take long and I had her out by 6 that evening.  I was also whacked in the face by a $250 charge for the surgery, an antibiotic shot, and a cone for her to wear.  So for a whopping $400, my cat got screwed and then wonderful treatment, all over the course of 2 visits.  I don't know if I"ll be coming back.  I'm not sure if I wouldn't be better off finding a vet that is more attentive to cats (the place just feels more attuned to dogs).  I got back tomorrow to get the stitches out and I will make my decision then. We have a big, older, mixed-breed dog. The vet our family has seen for the past 25+ years retired and sold his practice, so we decided to look for a new veterinary practice closer to our current neighborhood. Dr. Phillips worked at our old vet's office for a while, and our dog adored him, so we were pleased to discover he'd purchased a practice relatively close to us. The office is in an older building that is welcoming and clean. The staff all seemed delighted to see our dog. He loved the attention and didn't seem nervous or unhappy. (Bailey is 11 years old and entering the "get off my lawn," set-in-his-ways stage of life, so we were happy and a bit surprised that he seemed to adapt so well to an unfamiliar place.) We were able to schedule an appointment outside of traditional business hours, and didn't have a long wait in the waiting room. Once we were taken to the exam room, we were both pleased that Bailey (a pretty big guy with aching, old-man-dog joints) didn't have to be lifted up onto an exam table. Instead, the vet tech and the vet examined Bailey on his level. Both Dr. Gardial and the vet tech spent a lot of time with us, discussing Bailey's overall health and our specific concerns. I tend to ask a lot of inane questions (that I should have probably just Googled), but Dr. Gardial was patient and thorough in addressing my concerns. He didn't assume that we wanted to explore only the most or least expensive treatments, which was nice. A couple of days after our appointment, Dr. Gardial himself called to make sure we didn't have any additional questions. Bailey seems to be responding really well to the treatment Dr. G recommended. The prices seemed very reasonable to us. I'm sure there are larger and (possibly) cheaper alternatives out there, but we really like the intimate, family-practice feel of this clinic. Read Less

So it's been 6 months since I started going to this vet and I have since found that there are way cheaper alternatives for vaccinations as well as neutering at Emancipet. I will still keep a primary vet on hand for major issues, however, I have since looked into trying a different vet. I have looked back at my printed invoices and the general fee for an office visit has been different each time and is not consistent. Apparently one time they didn't charge me enough and then tried to charge me for it the next time I was in there. How am I supposed to know what you didn't charge me for correctly 2 months ago? They offer discounts if you go in on certain days, which by comparison is cheaper for an office visit than another vet that I've been to. However, the vet here was quick to send me to a specialist to check out my dog's heart murmur, which 2 other vets at this same location made no mention of it. I took him to a different vet for a second opinion and they said that his murmur was nothing serious to worry about. Getting a second opinion was great and saved me $300 by avoiding the specialist! I had been interested in neutering my dog here until I found out how expensive it was. They weren't very helpful or clear on giving me a price for neutering and always gave me a range of between $300 and $400. That's a HUGE range and difficult for someone to budge for! My dog also needed a follow-up appointment to check on his heart murmur, however, it wasn't a life or death threatening issue and he was still his energetic, spunky self. I politely told them that I would schedule the appointment and call them back whenever I decided to fit the appointment in to my schedule. They proceeded to call both myself and my boyfriend several times a day for two weeks. Finally, when I would not answer my phone, they gave up on calling. I'll give them 3 stars because the vets are super friendly and informative. I also love the specials that they have on Revolution heart worm meds - buy 6 doses and get 2 free! Read Less

As another reviewer said this Vet caters to Dogs. I took my cat to them to be checked for a skin condition. My cat can be a bit of a handful and is very grouchy when being touched by people she doesn't know. She immeadiately turns to hissing when she feels threatened. The vet tech was visbiliy scared of her and after one try gave up on getting her weight and any further vitals. When the vet came in concluded that we could do a lot of expensive tests to find a root cause or we could just give her prozac to calm her down and that might do the trick. Leaning more toward the drug resolution.I have choosen to get a second opinion.Update: The cat had a UTI  and has since been treated. Read Less

I have never been happier with a Veterinarian or there office then I was at NW Vet Hospital I have had a lot of experience with vet clinics since my 15 year old cat Monk has been diabetic for 6 years and must receive constant care at home and by a Dr's office. In addition to my cat i also have a 3 year old dog that needs basic care. I've lived a few different places in my adult life and have had to find Vets in each new location. It took some trying but overall I have been fairly happy with the vets i chose. ""Fairly happy"" is not at all how i would describe my feelings for NW Vet Hospital. This office, Dr Phillips and the rest of the staff are AMAZING. I have never felt like my animals were receiving better care nor had i trusted anyone with my animals as much as i did them. Everyone there is wonderful to work with no matter what the situation. My animals were treated with love and compassion making their experiences pleasant. I was also treated well. I was welcomed by name in the clinic every time I entered, as were my animals. People would hear my cats name and come out front just to say hi, pet him, or hold him. When i came in with just one animal they would ask about the pet at home. The staff always made fallow up calls to check on my pets after a visit. If the visit was for something more serious Dr Phillips would call as well. He showed true care for my animals. NW Vet Hospitals costs are fair and you can always get an apt within a very reasonable amount of time. Dr Phillips has proven to be a skilled Veterinarian whom I trust completely. The assistants have also surprised me with their skill and way with animals. I loved working with a single Vet instead of anyone who is available. Dr Phillips got to know me and my pet well making working together a pleasant experience and more effective. I cannot say enough about how great I think this clinic is or Dr Phillips himself. No matter where I lived in the Austin area I would still make the drive to their office. Even if their prices were hi (which there not) the exemplary service they provide would be well worth it. Not just for your benifit but your pets as well you should give NW Veterinary Clinic a try.Read Less

Cowboy and I have had several occasions to visit Northwest Veterinary Hospital (checkups, nail clipping, kenneling and tooth extraction) and every time the staff was pleasant, respectful of my time, and very, very dear with my cat. I think it telling that Cowboy is always in a relaxed mood when I pick him up. Per Bridget's review, thought you might like to know that I carried my cat to the kennel area and they were all cats. And happy cats, too. Perhaps they changed that system after her review or maybe they were extremely busy on the day she visited.Drs. are extremely thorough, take the time to explain exactly what's going on, how to proceed with after-care, etc. Take-home documentation is incredible (I wish doctors for humans were that explicit!) and Cowboy is doing fine. Dr. Julianne Phillips is an Angel! I brought my puppy in after I was horrified to find one tick after another. We had just gotten her from a breeder. They were able to get me in right away and Dr. Phillips patiently pulled out about 17! I was mortified. Because she had so many on her, he prescribed some medication just in case. He is very calm, gentle, and patient. He has become her regular vet and I have brought her back for all her vaccinations and spay surgery. I had a lot of questions for him and he so patiently answered all of them and made me feel like I was right to have concerns. She did very well after the surgery and you can barely see the scar. With any concerns we had, he was very responsive. We have also boarded her there as well. I am comforted that he keeps an eye on them. For instance, I didn't know that I was overfeeding her (a common mistake), and he was able to give me some advice so that she does not develop a weight problem which brings with it other health complications. My dog may not like the experience of going to vet. (Who does like being poked and proded?), but she loves Dr. Phillips. I am very touched to see that he is affectionate with her as well. This is really nice for a dog owner to see. I would recommend him in a heartbeat! Read Less

These five stars go directly to Dr Robert Rhyne. I cannot vouch for the other vets in this office. I have had the pleasure of taking all of my animals to Dr Rhyne for 8 years. He is consistently diligent, gentle, compassionate, informative, and most importantly he truly cares. He speaks in laymen terms and is never impatient with the 10,001 questions I ask just about every time I take my animal in. He is always available for questions - even outside of office visits. I still remember the time my Jesse was beginning a treatment that was intensive and it required extremely close monitoring - Dr Rhyne gave me his home number to call in case there were any problems. I am convinced I will not ever encounter another vet quite like this. He is the kind of person that exudes warmth and comfort, yet he seems to find a way for soft humor that even in the worst times bring a smile. Dr Rhyne is honestly one of the most wonderful vets, men and people I know. I think I'd ask him to marry me ... if he wasn't already married ..... and if I was straight.

Read Less

I can't even begin to list how this office stands above any other clinic or office in Austin (and I have been to many over the years). I recently lost my pet but I'm not sure my pug could have lived the life he did without the care of Dr. Lisa Harrington and her staff. They treated him like he was their own pet. I also want to thank the office for sending flowers and a extremely thoughtful note the the day following his passing , it made it easier to come home to flowers than a house without a dog. I highly recommend Dr. Harrington for the care of your most loved animal. I'm really going to miss going there and was thinking maybe they can give me a nail trim each month as great as they did my dog who did not like his paws to be touched!!!! Read Less

Dr. Lisa Harrington, at Northwest Veterinary Hospital is WONDERFUL. She is so thorough and gentle, and has provided incredible guidance and patience in helping my 14-1/2 year-old Golden Retriever have a great quality of life in her old age. She helped me combine western and eastern medicine, and a lot of common sense, to ensure my sweet dog has the best opportunity to feel good and be happy. She always remembers both of my dogs' names, has her assistants/techs follow up religiously to check on their progress and is an overall delight of a person. I can't recommend her enough! Read Less

Dr. Phillips at NW Vet was very accommodating one Saturday when I called an hour before closing time to see if they could "squeeze" me in for an appointment. I was not even a client, but they found the time to check out my dog. It was probably not an urgent situation, but I was worried about her and didn't want to wait until Monday for her to be seen. Dr. Phillips spent a lot of time with us and was very caring and sweet with my dog. And they stayed open an hour past their closing time to deal with us. The day after our visit, Sunday, Dr. Phillips called to see if everything was OK with my dog. I will definitely go back to NW Vet with my other dog and I would recommend them to friends.

Read Less

The vet tech was visbiliy scared of her and after one try gave up on getting her weight and any further vitals.

Read Less

I still remember the time my Jesse was beginning a treatment that was intensive and it required extremely close monitoring - Dr Rhyne gave me his home number to call in case there were any problems. I am convinced I will not ever encounter another vet quite like this.
