Really friendly and cost-effective vet services. The vets and staff are really nice, and they've helped us out with our pets many times. We would go in somewhat frequently for our old dog, and we were able to schedule her with the same vet every time. Wait times are pretty short for appointments, and they offer some basic cleanup services like nail trimmings and ear wax removal. They also carry special diets if you need prescription food for your dog or cat. It's where we buy our cat's urinary care kibble, and it's a little cheaper than other places we've been to. It's a good spot for long-term vet services. They're also really nice about emailing or faxing information to your insurance company if you have one. Read Less

We’ve been taking our baby to South Branch Pet and Bird Clinic for her healthcare since she was 2 months old. She will be 9 years old on April 6. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with her health and well being. Dr. Mekonnen, Dr. Patel and the entire staff are the best. My baby recently had bladder surgery and it’s like she never had it. Dr. Patel is the most compassionate vet we know. He listens and thoroughly addresses our concerns no matter how little or large the issue. He and his entire staff understand the love for our pets and showed patience, understanding, love and professionalism when we had to put to part with our beloved pet after a 3 year fight with cancer. I have no doubt that these are nice people who are well-intentioned. They are fine for vaccinations and general care. But if you think your pet may be really sick, I suggest you go elsewhere. A week ago, my dog was lethargic with a diminished appetite. I brought him in. They did some testing, of which some blood work showed some drastic numbers. They suggested a few possible illnesses and gave me two generic prescriptions (antibiotic and steroid). It was a guess, but they are the professionals and I trusted them. These pills usually fight a handful of common illnesses. Three days later, large tumors burst in my dog's abdomen and he died in my arms in the middle of the night on the floor of a 24/7 animal hospital. Obviously, South Branch couldn't necessarily have prevented this, but they could have been much more thorough in their process. The 24/7 vet couldn't understand why I didn't have a better answer from my dog's vet. They threw darts with my best friend's life and I don't appreciate it. I cried when I threw the almost full bottles of unnecessary pills in the trash. Read Less

They lost my cat!! He was in the attic of the building for 4 weeks. I took him in for neutering. He was already stress due to dislike of the carriage. When I got there I informed them that he was stressed. As I checked him in the tech pick up the carriage and took him to the exam room (with the door open) When the carriage was opened, he bolted! He chased around the waiting area and back to the room. He got away again and ended up jumping up on a tall cabinet and escaped through an opening in their low ceiling.I think the techs are not well trained to handle animals properly. Although animals are pets, they get stressed in certain situations - especially cats. Even cats don't all have the same temperament. I have another cat that's not like this one; same age from same litter.  I've raised a lot of cats over the years .They are not like dogs.  An experienced vet tech should know this.Cats have to be allowed time to calm down when this happens. He should have been placed in one of their large holding pens for a while. Traps were placed in the attic with no results. He finally got so dehydrated & hungry he was trapped after 4 weeks.Needless to say, when I picked him up, I took him home and  allowed him to gain some weight and took him to a different vet for his surgery 3 weeks later. I have brought both my dog and cat here for veterinary care and have been pleased with the service.  The staff members are always friendly and helpful with questions and don't take their time getting to you.  The vet office is in an older building and isn't much to look at, but it's very practical.  The doctor is also responsive to concerns about your pet and takes the time to explain everything to you before you consider putting your babies under the knife.  We never felt as if they tried to offer care that wasn't necessary to jack up the price.  This vet office is also extremely affordable.  We have never experienced issues with scheduling next day appointments if there was an urgent reason to visit.  We felt as if they genuinely cared about the well being of our animals instead of getting that corporate feeling you often get at bigger vets offices. I've lived in Austin for almost 20 years.  During that time, there's been an ongoing quest for a good vet who doesn't overcharge for services.  Finally, I found that vet clinic at South Branch Pet & Bird Clinic!  Every employee I have encountered at the clinic is amazing.  Helpful, compassionate, knowledgeable, and very, very sweet to my dog and cats.  The prices are fair (way better than any other clinic I have visited).  The doctors will give you various options and are very honest about whether or not something needs to be done and the urgency of the situation.My dog recently had to have 3 small cysts/tumors removed.  The Dr. called me 2 times during the surgery to give me updates and to let me make decisions on certain procedures. Results came back in 4 days.Additional positives:- They are open 7 days a week and have hours that extend past the standard 9am-5pm workday, so it's easy to schedule.- They always find a way to fit you in.- They will make recommendations to help you save money.- They will remind you when it's time for your animal's annual exam.- Again, they are just lovely people.  From the front desk, to the techs, to the vets.- It's never super crowded with pets, making it a calm environment.- It's always clean. You guys are great! I suspected all three of my dogs to have caught kennel cough from a visiting relative's dog. I love this place! I recently had them treated for kennel cough.  The vet closest to me in Cedar Creek could only fit ONE of my dogs in, despite knowing how contagious kennel cough is. I took my 8mon chi female to this dog killer cuz she was throwing up and poop I thought it was parvo she went in very alert at home she was still walking around picking up her head out the window I called around I really didn't want to go to this clinic cuz I took a female before and he didn't check her he tried to feed her ,he said take her home give her honey and shell b fine we'll I paid and got into car she died the minute we got on Ben white I was angry I demanded my money back and had to face my children about her death but this chihuahua right herei called that morning asked so many questions I just wanted her better like I said I know all about parvo I thought that's what it was and so many vets was trying to charge me $1200 to treat her they referred me to Dr death again I thought about it ugh maybe hell actually try to help if I can explain what happened so I called asked questions told them how her older sister died less then a year ago and asking prices asking if there was another Dr there she said there was but he was in surgery I had to see the same man she said he knew all about the parvo because its common there about dogs throwing up so I'm like OK I know many dogs don't survive parvo but I wanted her in less pain I had told them that but I get there Dr does parvovirus test it said negative OK so if its not parvovirus what is it he asked if she got into poison I said no he said maybe Cuz she didn't have a doggy period of that I had changed her diet I'm like no no no she was in a kennel most of the day he treated her as if she had parvo I was getting ready to leave he tells me that if she continues to throw up bring her in morning and hell do blood work and check if she swallowed anything but why didn't he do that there he asked to keep her til 5 took forever to agree but I did I went later picked her up he said oh she's fine shell be just fine 3hours later she died she was weaker her body freezing he refuses a refund only will refund meds Read Less

Do not take your pet here.  I'm pretty sure my cat died because of poor quality care.  Long story and heartbreaking,  but everyone was awful.  Front desk staff is rude and acts like they can't be bothered.  Doctors are rude and unsympathetic, techs are the same.  I'm very disappointed in the care they provided,  or more likely,  the lack of care.  Will never go back and will do numbers to keep my friends and family away from there. Dr. Patel was my pets vet for almost 8 years. I refused to see anyone else! He has a wonderful bedside manner with not only your pet but also with a nervous or upset family as well. Several months ago, after losing my home in a fire, I had to put down my beloved Barney (my dog). Dr Patel, knowing about my situation in fact did this for free because he knew I could not afford to do so. No other doctor or vet would ever do that! The staff at this clinic is wonderful and helpful as well. I worked in Animal Rescue for 20+ yrs., and Dr. Patel has got to be one of the best vets I ever worked with. They killed my bird. I brought in my Zebra Finch and Dr. Mekonnon prescribed the antibiotic Tylan. The problem is that he told me to use daily what I now know is 12X the amount I should've used! She died within 24 hours. I called Dr. M and he told me she didn't die due to the medicine. He said she would've only had a small amount so it couldn't have been the meds, it's just a coincidence. It doesn't matter how MUCH she drank, it's that the concentration of the medicine was TOXIC! I finally just said I wanted my money back. I spent $40 for the visit and $23 for the meds. I didn't even ask for reimbursement for the $22 I spent on the bird. He told me if I bring the medication back he will refund me the $23 only. Said I wanted the full amt & he said well you only paid what, $19 for the visit? NO, I paid $40 but good to know I was raped on that front as well. I should've listened to the bad reviews. DO NOT take your animal here, this man will kill it then take no responsibility! Read Less

DO NOT GO THERE!!!  Worst vet ever.  Took kittens in for diarrhea. Vet was with the receptionist and he spent 10 minutes arguing with her and calling her a liar.  Very unprofessional.  Office was crowded, dirty, and in need of new floors, paint, etc.  When Vet came in he told me the kittens did not have worms and that he did not know the cause but gave me antibiotics.They still had diarrhea two weeks later and so I took them to another vet.  That vet told me that they both had worms and we treated for worms.  They got better.  So either the South Branch vet, he never told me his name, charged me for the worms test and didn't do it, or he did the test but does not know how to diagnose worms.  He also had a very off putting personality.  He kept griping at me for not doing their vaccines.  I told him I would do vaccines when they were over their diarrhea.  He was still griping when I was paying at the receptionist.  DO NOT GO THERE!!! Very affordable pet care. Considering that I'm a new owner of a puppy, they have been very polite and patient with my questions and concerns, even over the phone. The front desk are super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They were able to give me good resources of where I can find natural substitutes of food, and preventatives for my dog, and informed me about the medications they had available there. I called the next day after my pup's first appointment because I was concerned about some issues I noticed with my new dog. They scheduled an appointment the next day at no extra charge, and was able to address what was going on with my dog and reassured me that she is healthy and that she just needs time to adjust. Yes, yes, and yes. I've taken my little Pomeranian, now 10, to a couple of different vets in Austin. I am by far the most pleased with this one. Not only because the prices are very reasonable, but because the staff and vet are excellent and have great bedside manner. I'm willing to pay a little extra if me and my pup are treated like royalty but luckily I found a place that has both qualities. The vet always makes me feel calmer (I may or may not overreact in situations where my baby isn't feeling well) and informed - both medically and financially. I walk out feeling confident that I'm not getting hussled and that my best friend was taken care of. My Pom went in to get a dental cleaning and multiple teeth extracted. I put this off for so long because I thought I couldn't afford it, as several other vets throughout the years quoted me at over $1,000. It was a quarter of that here. I've also taken a friends dog here, who was bitten by another dog while in my care and the wound abscessed. Again, felt so guilty for not taking the dog in sooner before it got to the point it did (not knowing there were affordable and quality vets out there). The vet was amazing, and treated me as well as the dog! I really recommend this place, lower costs doesn't always mean lower quality of care. Read Less

The vet can be scary for the both of us, it can get uncomfortable. However, I always feel like I am taken cåare of best as possible. They were fantastic to work with my old dog. It didn't end well for me, but he isn't in pain. It's a hard decision and I feel like they gave me the truth, and not what would make them money. I appreciate that. Not a 5, because I had already made the arrangements for after his death on the phone. But there was no record of it. So I had to tell them again, in person. I would recommend Pet & Bird Clinic very highly. They offer very reasonably priced services and quick scheduling. The vet in my hometown wanted 5 to 6 times the amount to perform the very same procedures. Saved me money and time! Also very caring regarding the health of my Chico. When we moved here from out of state i tried a few vets as we have a small zoo at home.I was so glad when i found dr Patel as he is so knowledgeable and i would say the best vet in town.He also dont do any unnecessarily tests.Recently he did a delicate operation on one of my kittens and he did a great job and saved that kittens life.The vets office are very reasonable priced and they also open over weekends.This clinic deserve my 5 stars. Just returned from a visit with my dog. She scratched her eyeball so needs meds. The staff were all polite and attentive. The appointment was quick- very short wait time. The medications were explained to me very clearly and the clinic was clean. The Dr and the tech both seemed to enjoy their jobs and do them well and efficiently. I love this place. They are super nice, the vets have always taken great care of my Bailey. I recently rescued another pit (and they have zero issues with the breed) but hadn't yet gotten the certificate for rescue prices but the vet was great and "prescribed" home remedies and to deal with the itching and scratching from her severe sarcoptic mange before we started prescribing stuff as she's already dealing with bad heartworms, and an enlarged heart.I've previously had a blown out tendon replaced in Bailey's knee for 1/3rd the cost of others in town.I tell everyone I meet with a pet about this office, gets no better. I saw an ad in the Chronicle for a $60 spay. I took in my dog and told them how their ad had brought me in for my first visit, then approved another $200 in add-ons. But when I got home and looked at my bill detail they had charged me double for the Spay. When I called they said they could not help me since I didn't leave the ad coupon (but the receptionist had not asked for it). When I asked to speak to the Vet he was argumentative, rude, and unwilling to give me the advertised rate because he did not believe I had mentioned the ad. He talked over me and yelled at me when I threatened to dispute the charges through the credit card company. I will never go back and I will make sure to tell others not to go there. I will dispute the $60 through my credit card company and even if he gets the $60, he will lose out on ANY of my business in the future. Read Less

As you walk into this disgusting clinic you will notice just how dingy and dirty everything is. Then as you walk up to the front counter you will be hit again with an extremely rude staff. But none of that matters as long as the veterinarian and vet tech are knowledgeable and take great care of your pet right?! WRONG. I have been to this vet on 2 occasions both of which ended with the veterinarian getting irritated and practically yelling at me for simply asking questions. This place is absolutely horrible and on both occasions I left frustrated and worried. Again, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE, its is not worth the discount ( as you will end up taking your pet to another vet anyways). This place should be shut down. Read Less

Note to this business: if you offer coupons, wouldn't it make sense to treat your potential long term hard cash paying customers well? Note to people thinking about going to this clinic, don't. I'll never go back...I wish I had never gone in the first place. I saved $58 but was prescribed $40 worth of unnecessary medicine, and left in tears. Not worth it. Re. the coupon, you get what you pay for, no extra charge for the rude patronizing receptionist. The impatient look when I asked for clear information about billing did not go unnoticed. She argued with me when I said I wanted to discuss vaccines with the vet, which, by the way, I never got to do. It was just a rude uncaring atmosphere from start to finish. No one introduced themselves. The technician came into the room to give the shots. I asked if she was the vet, since there was no introduction. She said oh do you want the vet to give the shots? I said no not necessarily ...I just want to discuss the vaccine with the vet. This was supposed to be an exam for my tiny little allergic medication sensitive dog. I wanted to discuss his care with the vet! A man came in who did not introduce himself, no discussion, roughly took my dog and gave the shots. He bled so much they had to use a bandage. Three days later he was still sore. I had brought him because of an itchy skin condition he gets every year. The guy did not examine him, didn't look in his ears or mouth, didn't pick him up...didn't say anything about the skin condition or what might be causing it... but prescribed steroids and antibiotic. I asked ...does he need antibiotics? he snapped back at me defensively, 'would I say he needed antibiotics if I didn't think he did'...I told him I just wanted to let him know aboug my dogs drug sensitive history, and I wanted to figure out what is causing this skin condition. He said if it was caused by an infection, this would clear it up. This just didn't make sense to me to give antibiotics and steroids for a mild itchy skin condition. I agree with the other reviewer that they should not prescribe $40 worth of meds which are not needed. (I wound up not giving him the meds, and am treating his skin condition topically with a vinegar water solution which seems to be working.. until I can get him to another vet). As we were checking out I noticed my dog was really drooling. I was worried that it might be a reaction to the shots. Twice I said something, the receptionist said oh he'll be fine...then she too became concerned and went to look for the vet, whom she could not find. She came back and again said he'll be fine, but she did write down the e-clinic number for me just in case. By this time I was shaken by the entire experience and about to cry, but I decided to make the best of it and smile and just get out of there as fast as I could. I mentioned how nice it was that they offered the coupons in this day and time when everyone seemed to be raising their prices. The receptionist replied that most people that came in with a coupon never came back. Go Figure!!! The employees should take this as a very stong hint. They should read these reviews. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I used to work here. Please read what I have to say. 1) Some animals have vaccine reactions. It has nothing to do with who gave the shot, what shot was used, or what clinic you took it too. Animals (just like humans with Penicillin, or Prednisone) develop reactions. Please call them back if you notice a reaction--they will help you. For cheap. 2)*****Coupons--They have coupons out for better business, and it works. It allows people with lower income to bring in their dogs or cats that have had no vaccines before, or are in worse shape than others, to bring their pets with a decent price. This can cause the clinic to be busy. Please get over that. And also, do not complain if your dog is sick and you bring in a $5 coupon for an exam, and now have to pay $80. Your dog/cat was sick....Medicine is not free.......and they already gave you a discount to even see the doctor..I wish human doctors had coupons. Since when does a coupon mean that your visit is going to cost nothing? Please direct me to a grocery store that lets you bring in coupons that get you meals for free instead with a COUPON discount. Be grateful. 3) I don't know what you people think or believe, but bashing the doctors based on their ""english speaking abilities"" is downright rude. The senior doctor there, (the one who does major surgeries to save your animals for a low price) graduated from A&M University. Now will you people complain?.....The top Vet school in Texas?....Yeah, he put himself into debt as a college student, because he HATES animals. Man...I just am amazed at how ignorant humans are. 4) The techs there (I was a tech) bust their butts to help the clinic and the clients. They do everything they can to keep everyone happy, including you and your animals. The receptionists deal with the most rudest people you can imagine, simply when they have to tell the client that there is certain protocol to follow, just like other job. When I worked there, I did not wake up everyday thinking ""MAN, I AM SO MAD AND MISERABLE, I AM GOING TO SCREW EVERYONE OUT OF THEIR MONEY AT MY JOB BECAUSE I HATE EVERYONE AND THEIR ANIMALS, THATS WHY I HELP THEM EVERYDAY."" I just cannot believe that people think they are out to hurt your animals and take all your money. The Dr. M does ear crops for HALF of what you would pay somewhere else, and does an amazing job. Ask anyone. Dr. P is the nicest doctor you will ever meet. He will stay in the exam room with you ALL DAY if he has to, to insure that you understand what is going on with your sick animal. In response to a few complaints: *The clinic stinks because of YOUR animals. Your animals smell awful. They come in their with ear infections like you would not believe, amongst other problems. Its not our fault theirt your animals need medical attention and smell. *Vaccines hurt most puppies. It is not the tech's fault or the Doctor's fault that your puppy cries in some cases. Vaccines are kept refrigerated, therefore may come as a cold shocking sensation to your puppy, and he/she may wine. Human babies cry when given shots... *To the woman who claims they did not anesthetize the gentleman's dog. Hahahaha....can you imagine a doctor trying to spay an animal that was not sedated??! Oh my goodness I am laughing at that accusation. You'd think they'd know if an animal was sedated or not after 8 years of med school. Hahaha!!! That one is my favorite complaint!! One last thing, If there was a website to complain about clients, there would be complaints on there too. There are always two sides to every story, remember that. If the clients who have good things to say about this clinic posted reviews on this website, instead of the majority of people who b*tch, the reviews would be totally different. Please allow me to believe that there are still sane, intelligent, understanding people left in this world. Because this is just sad. Thank you. Read Less
