Research Boulevard Pet And Bird Hospital

Austin, Texas
General Info
Pet owners across Texas seek medical services from Research Boulevard Pet And Bird Hospital in Austin because it offers adaptable treatment options combined with collaborative planning. Initial appointments frequently involve evaluations of personal habits along with standard laboratory tests and immunization planning. The clinic examines pets to detect early illness indicators like diminished energy levels movement discomfort or altered eating habits. The team examines visible actions and contextual factors to develop practical recommendations that aim to avert potential future problems. Research Boulevard Pet And Bird Hospital offers support for minor surgical procedures along with dental hygiene issues and prescription management for chronic conditions. Assistance exists for addressing dermatological issues alongside age-related deterioration and persistent digestive disturbances. I originally took my parakeet, Skittles, to a clinic here in Georgetown who supposedly treats birds. But I was extremely un-impressed with their examination and their awkward handling of my bird, so I decided to search for an actual avian vet. Great decision on my part! I found the Research Blvd Pet & Bird clinic and took Skittles to their avian vet, Dr. Mitchell, whose examination of Skittles was "night and day different" from the Georgetown vet's exam. While the other clinic is conveniently located only twenty minutes from my house, I will gladly drive across town to take Skittles to Dr. Mitchell whose calming manner and wonderful way with birds - along with his obvious avian expertise - is well worth the trip. There truly is a huge difference between a vet who primarily sees cats and dogs but, if necessary, will see birds versus a true avian vet (especially a kind one like Dr. Mitchell). Read Less

Research Pet and Bird made up for a less than ideal visit by blowing away my expectations in the following days. When I came in for an annual visit and to ask a few behavioral questions about my bird, I left feeling confused and not having any confidence in the half-hearted advice I was given by one of the vets. Research emailed me the next day to follow up on the appointment, and when I expressed my concerns regarding the appointment they had the vet email me additional information on top of scheduling a call with a different vet, Dr. Mitchell. The call was fantastic, all my questions were answered to the fullest and I can move forward knowing that we're making the right moves for my feather child. You can tell the staff really care, I would recommend this office to anybody. Read Less

For anyone who truly cares for your bun-bun please DO NOT bring them here. Bring them to White Rock where there are competent rabbit savvy veterinarians who know what these fragile animals are all about. The vets here are full of “I don’t know”s and “I’m not sure”s when it comes to rabbits. I’m sure they’re talented in dogs, cats and other things. But nooooooooooot buns. They couldn’t even show me the $159.89 2 view X-ray work up results nor keep record of the E.cuniculi panel ($212) from the last visits when I was trying to figure out what was happening to my sweet girl. I got “all normal” for the X-rays from them and a week later she’s suffering from tumors all over her body inside and out! I only found this out when White Rock SHOWED ME the X-rays they took. I had to put my sweet girl to sleep that same day. The staff is kind here however, I’m not sure if they’re a good place to take your bun. Save yourself the financial burden and head the opposite direction. Unless you really hate your rabbit. But I don’t even wish it upon a bad bun. Read Less

Took care of one of my rat's cremations and the staff was very understanding and caring. Later I went back for a back leg injury for my 3 yo rat and they were very careful and informative when treating my rat despite her old age making her outliving the average life span. I've called for rasping from another rat and they helped me monitor her without making me come in and spend excess money. I will forever go to this vet. All of the other animals seem to be treated well by the friendly and highly trained staff. While the office staff and techs were helpful and friendly, I was incredibly put off by Dr. Mitchell and will never bring another pet to him again! He insisted that I should be charged twice the price of the exam fee I was quoted because he had to stop what he was doing when the tech showed him our class guinea pig and stated, "I think this may be an emergency."  The guinea pig died as Dr. Mitchell BEGAN examining it.  I was there for less than 10 minutes and hadn't even finished filling out the paperwork when I was slapped with a $150 bill.  After I explained to the tech that I was quoted an exam fee of $68, Dr. Mitchell came into the exam room and rudely stated that because this was an emergency situation and he had to stop what he was doing the fee was higher.  He finally said, "That should've been communicated to you.  It wasn't, so that's not your fault.  It should be, but it isnt."  After he left the room I heard him loudly tearing into the office staff.  So unprofessional! This was by far the worst experience I've ever had with a vet before.  **Steer clear of Dr. Mitchell!** Read Less

When I first got my dogs, about 15 years ago, I took them to Dr. Anderson and Dr. Shroeder at Milwood Vet. Several years ago, Milwood closed and the doctors there moved to Research Pet & Bird Hospital. Since then, I have been a customer of Research Pet & Bird Hospital. I think it has been about 10 years or so. I have brought our dogs, birds and gerbils to the vets at Research. All have received excellent care throughout their lives, and even when it was time to say good-bye. I have been particularly happy with Dr. Anderson, who provides compassionate and expert care for my aging dogs. I was also impressed (although sad) with the service I received when I brought in my two "very geriatric" gerbils who needed to be put down humanely. So, in sum, expert care for the entire life cycle of your pets (all pets). Read Less

We have been taking our animals here for about 7 years, and finally made the decision to make a change.  Here are a few parting notes:1.  We have spent thousands if not tens of thousand of dollars here and not once have we ever been thanked or even acknowledged that they know who we are.2.  The staff for the most part has terrible bedside manner and lacks compassion.   There have been some great doctors here but they don't seem to stick around long.3.  Rarely does the doctor provide any sort of insight or professional guidance.  Instead they fill your head full of everything that could be wrong with your animal more than willing to run every test imaginable.4.  They charge after hours fees which are double if you come in after five and then they rush to get you out before 6.  We had  a pet in critical condition and we were constantly being reminded that they were closing.5.  We asked the doctor for a prescription so we could get our medicine filled at a pharmacy (you can by the way and its much cheaper), and we were told that was not possible.  I am not sure if that is true or not but the medicine we were being charged $30 for was $2 at our pharmacy, and our bill was already almost $1000 dollars.  They acted offended when I let them know that and even question that we might  be lying.6.  I have heard the staff openly gossiping about clients in the waiting room which made me extremely uncomfortable knowing they probably did the same about us when we left.7.  After being sent home in what felt like a rush, we found out the next day that our pet was in critical condition and he later died.  I am not saying it is their fault but the way we were rushed out didn't feel right given that he died the next morning. Brought my rat here because I thought she had an infection. The doctor listened to her and gave me 2 types of antibiotics. I did the course and brought her back. Doctor listened to her lungs and said she sounded awesome and had a great bill of health. She's now in critical care, on the brink of death. Went to White Rock Veterinary because she was lethargic and seemed really not okay about two weeks later. They looked at her and said she has had a long case of pneumonia, probably for a couple months. She has a giant mass in her lungs and weighs 50 grams (big deal for rat) under what she should because she's been so sick. The vet said it wasn't my fault because rats are really good at hiding their illnesses to the outside eye, but the weight and mass in her lungs would have been very apparent last time I was at the vet, and there's no way it could have gone unnoticed. New vet sent me home after five hours of hospitalization with three antibiotics, an additional one to nebulize for her, critical care nutrient paste, and the prognosis is still very very low. I have to give her these every eight hours and she is very very sick. My rat is probably going to die from this oversight by Research Pet and Bird. Read Less

I do not like writing negative posts however, deciding not to have our pet fancy rat treated here saved me about $650. While away on vacation, our rat incurred a tail injury (degloving) that required a small piece of bone to need amputation. It was during the week and I work so we decided to try Research Pet & Bird rather than see another vet we use in a nearby smaller town. I was fully aware the rat would need an amputation of the bone but was not prepared for the absurd cost. I know this is Austin and pet care can be expensive but this was well out of proportion. Additionally, this vet wanted to cut off about another 1/4 -1/2 inch of healthy tail just because of a minor laceration that likely occurred during the tail injury. The laceration was not infected nor was it serious. I questioned the need to take off healthy tail and he gave me some reason about a potential blot clot? Anyway, I was told the vet "just cleared his schedule and can do the 45 minute long surgery right now." The injury had occurred several days earlier (while on vacation) and the rat was seemingly not in any pain, had been eating, drinking, acting normal and playing with our other rat like nothing had happened so this was not a situation of needing emergency surgery at all. I felt I was being pressured. I questioned the high cost of the surgery and they explained but I decided to leave. As I was paying for my office visit and an antibiotic (about $100), the tech came back with a new quote lowered by 15%, still about $700 and still way too much all things considered. My husband took our rat to our regular vet (I used to work for him in college). It took him less than 2 minutes to give her a local, amputate the bone and skin glue the skin together to close the wound. All for the cost of an office visit $50, lidocane and antibiotic he gave her for $10 (and that is not discounted). And she is doing just great, her tail has healed completely, even the laceration. Other than her slightly shorter tail, you never would know she had been injured.  Just be aware that you may want a second opinion. If you think something is too expensive, question it and go elsewhere. I am thankful we were not in an emergency surgery situation (like many pets are) because then you feel forced to do something against your better financial judgment. I would not visit this vet practice again. Read Less

I also received a phone call yesterday reminding me of an appointment, and the women who called me was really rude. I hung up and cancelled the appointment because I was pretty turned off with her tone and the way she treated customers. Read Less

Yesterday, one of my favorite chickens became very ill and listless. I was doing everything I could to take care of her, but late in the afternoon, it became clear that my actions weren't going to be enough for her. After calling another vet who works with chickens and being told I would need to wait until tomorrow for an appointment, I called my regular vet, and was referred to Research Blvd. Pet & Bird Hospital. From the moment they picked up the phone until the moment they walked me back to my car, the entire staff at Research Blvd was sensitive, caring, and compassionate. The reception staff was proficient and efficient, and took the urgency of the situation very seriously. The attending vet was very caring, and very patiently and thoroughly explained what was happening, providing me with all available options of care for my sweet bird.At no point was I made to feel like my decisions for the care of my chicken were any less heartbreaking or important than the decisions I would make for my dog or any other pet. Everyone was so sweet and supportive of the difficult choice I was making, and I got the sense that they genuinely cared about my sweet bird, and the gravity of deciding what to do for her and the rest of my flock. Thanks so much to everyone there for being so kind to what most would consider among the least of species. It was a very bright spot in an otherwise pretty crummy day. From now on, I know who will be providing all of the care for future chicken emergencies - hopefully with better prognoses than this one. We have been taking our 6-7 cats to this clinic for 18+ yrs. We have seen some of the other vets in the clinic but our favorites are Dr Skellenger , Dr Clinton, and Dr Lewelle.. When we have seen some of the other doctors and vet techs who we did not care for, all we had to do is tell the front staff and they changed us to a different doctor immediately and took our complaints seriously. \nWhen the cats first started getting their dental cleanings I requested that if the cats had any cavities to fill them if the teeth were fixable. Dr Skellenger was great in fixing the teeth that needed it. He helped us understand feline dental cavities and gave us a lot of information on dental health. They now have digital xrays which are easier and clearer to read and also less radiation for the animals. \nWe've also had some of our cats with problems, heart murmur, kidney problems that were all addressed very assertively. \nWhen any of the cats had to go under anes. for surgery or dental or even if they were sick, the staff would also call either that night or the next day to check on the cats status.\nWhen our cats quality of life is no longer good and their life ends they, staff and doctors, are very compassionate and comforting. They even gave us a paw print clay cookie with the pets name on it. WE have 4 of these now.\nThe staff has always been polite. There are days that they are swamped and extremely busy and the front desk can get overloaded but they try very hard to be pleasant and efficient. \nWhen I had to board the cats I checked multiply clinics and most were open cages with cage floors and very very small but RPBH kennel area was the best that I found, they were like kitty apartments, one room for litter box, one room for bed. The area was very clean. When I picked up the cats they all smelled clean and were healthy.\nOverall we have been extremely happy with RPBH, Read Less

My cherished relationship with Dr. Skellenger and the staff at Research Pet & Bird Hospital started about a decade ago and is still going strong to this day. Dr. Skellenger's knowledge and dedication to his patients and their owners is second to none. Here's my story... My dog Barkley (the love of my life) and I started out seeing Dr. Skellenger for routine exams and dental cleanings when needed. As Barkley got older, I learned the importance of the ""Health Plan"", which is simply a more comprehensive set of routine tests to make sure all of his systems were functioning properly. Through the years, the test results showed some changes and with medication we were able to slow the aging process and keep Barkley as healthy as a puppy! Dr. Skellenger was truly instrumental in prolonging Barkley's quality of life for many additional years. Honestly, without Dr. Skellenger I would have lost Barkley years ago. Unfortunately, Barkley had to be put to rest this past September, which was in a word, devastating! Dr. Skellenger stood by us and was so compassionate during this difficult time. \n\nIn addition to caring for Barkley, Dr. Skellenger also cares for my other dog Hailey, and my two cats, Ringo and Mia (my little princess).\n\nAlso, I have gotten to know the staff pretty well at RPBH and must say that they are some of the best folks around! I'm always greeted with a smile and love when we get the chance to chat. To me, the staff and Dr. Skellenger are family.\n\nI would never consider taking my beloved pets anywhere but RPBH.\n\nThanks,\nJennifer Christena Read Less

Dr Morelli?s indiscretion and inexperience nearly cost my dog his life.\n\nI transferred my dog to Research Pet & Bird clinic while he was on O2 @ 7am in the morning directly from the emergency animal clinic on 183N. Dr Morelli did not examine my dog until 2pm. After x-raying my dog and discovering that he had pneumonia she proceeded to put him under an anesthetic for further examination, which is life threatening for my breed (brachycephalic) of dog.\n\nAfter the examination her ONLY recommendation was euthanasia, she never once discussed treatment options. The clinic receptionists also tried to persuade me into euthanasia after I declined their euthanasia recommendation.\n\nNeedless to say I did not heed her advice and have a happy & healthy dog.\n\nThis is the worst vet clinic I have ever been too. I would not recommend this vet clinic to my worst enemy.\n Read Less

Mitchell). Read Less

Mitchell. Read Less

Read Less

They are so fantastic!!! I have been a customer for more than 20 years. Whether during a routine office visit or in a life threatening emergency, I have always been treated with respect, compassion and understanding. The most important thing for me is to have a doctor or technician or staff talk to me like I am an intelligent human being. My pets mean a lot to me, they are my family, and I will not trust just anyone to take care of their medical needs. Words that I would use to describe this clinic are: compassionate, caring, dedicated, professional, responsible, knowledgeable, and experienced.
