I have used this vet twice. First time I thought maybe I was harshly judging the experience because I had to put a stray cat to sleep. The second time was same treatment though. No "bedside" manners at all! The Dr.'s need a lesson in customer service. The Dr.'s were rude and almost condescending both times. The other staff members were polite and seemed to genuinely care, they don't deserve the poor rating. I said after the first time I wouldn't go back but had an emergency with an outside kitten and they were the only place open after I got home from work so I had no choice. I regret going back and I am certain I will NEVER return. I will drive an hour away to go anywhere else but here. Read Less

We have had to come here twice for some unfortunate situations. First, one of our dogs was hit by a car. I was there before they even opened and they let me come in without question. Everyone was more caring and helpful then I could have expected. Luckily, he is making a full recovery. Second time was to allow one of our other dogs to pass peacefully. We were very surprised when we received a card from the staff with their condolences. Thank you so much for caring. That is something lost in business these days. Read Less

I have been taking my dogs here for many years and through several trying events.  The first visit was for an emergency. Our "regular" vet would not fit our dog into his schedule.  The injury could not wait and would require surgery to repair (we had been to an emergency vet the night before but they did not have the tools to do the job)  I called Bulverde Animal Hospital because they are very close to my home and I read good reviews online.  They were super accommodating and friendly.  Dr. Kothman was already in surgery but they made a point to go ask him if he could fit my pup in and he said to bring him in right away.  He did a thorough exam and even brought me into the back area to show me exactly what was wrong.  (It was a mouth injury and they had to sedate our dog a bit in order to get a good look)  He repaired my pup's mouth beautifully and even cleaned his teeth while he had him under anesthesia.  The prices are very competitive and spelled out for you before they do anything.Later, our Labrador was diagnosed with an adrenal tumor by Dr. Kothman and cared for supportively by him and Dr. Bunting for the next 18 mos. of his life. They always showed great compassion and love for my sweet boy and helped us maintain his quality of life right up until the end.Luckily, it's just been routine care lately for my remaining two dogs (knock wood).  The staff at Bulverde Animal Hospital care for them with just as much expertise and interest as they do when the pups are ill or getting themselves into sticky emergency situations. Dr. Bunting has a great sense of humor and is always quick to laugh at the stupid stories I tell her about my dogs.  (Yes, I am one of THOSE dog people).  She never acts rushed even though I'm sure that she is dying inside for me to cut the chit chat so she can move along to the next patient.   She is a genuinely nice human being. So, take your dogs to Bulverde Animal Hospital.  Don't be deceived by the no frills look of the place.  Your animals will get great, affordable and accommodating care there. There's an awesome park in Bulverde across from the air park where you can bring your dogs for a walk afterwards. Make a whole day of it :-) Read Less

Our poodle had kidney failure and had to be hospitalized here for a week. He was in good hands. Dr. Kothmann called us daily with reports and visited with me in person to answer my questions and explain tests each morning. He never rushed and took his time during our visits. Dr. Kothmann also patiently took time to go over options, costs, and details. His staff even trained us to administer IVs at home, which we did like pros. They also showed us how to prepare our dog's special food. As usual, when we took over the dog's medical care at home, the doctor called to check up on our and our dog's progress, which improved for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, our pup was too sick to survive much longer. They were supportive and took care of his body's arrangements. Again, not rushing us into decisions and reassuring us of our decisions. The staff is nice and they truly care for animals. You can tell that nurses have found their calling in animal care. We've also boarded our dogs there over the years. They took care of exams, shots and bathing while we were away so we didn't have to worry about running to get the additional shots needed when boarding at other places. It was about  $30/day a year ago, plus the cost of the exam and shots (when needed). The building may not be fancy and new, but I'd go for old school country care any day. Care was excellent, staff was pleasant and professional, and costs were way more reasonable than other facilities.  We'll be investing in pet insurance next time. Read Less

We brought our kitten into the vet to be spayed 2 years ago. Ever since being spayed, she goes into heat every 2 weeks! She pees everywhere, scent marks, and yowls all night long, depriving the entire household of sleep. Called the vet to tell him, he said he had never heard of such a thing. I have since spoken to another vet who HAS heard of such a thing. It happens when part of an ovary gets left inside. I called again to talk to the vet about having her spayed properly - free of charge, since we had already paid over $500 to get her spayed the first time. The vet suggested that there is something else "driving that kitty". No doubt, to get himself off the hook. He told me that he could do an exploratory surgery, to see if they can find anything, but he never said it would be free of charge. I do not know if I can even trust him again.Read Less

I called here at 7pm because my cat was in immense pain and had an oozing wound that looked like it may have been a snake bite. The girl on the phone was very friendly, asked questions about the cat and then asked when I could get there so they could see him immediately. I let her know that I wasn't sure if it was a snake bite, but she said that they would make sure to take him in when we got there. We arrived about 2 minutes later and the check in process was very easy. I had never been here, and the didn't make me fill out anything before they started assessing my sweet cat Spike. The vet tech was very friendly and helped to calm me down while she looked over Spike and took his vitals. The Vet, Dr. Bunting, came in as soon as his vitals were taken and looked at the wound and did an extensive exam. After they shaved the wound site on his leg, she told me that it didn't look like a typical snake bite but gave me the signs to watch for during the night in case it was. She gave Spike some antibiotic shots, anti-inflammatory shots and some diphenhyramine in case he was having a reaction. The entire staff was very caring and friendly and put me at ease. It was very nice to have such great care in a very stressful situation. I will be sure to come here in the future. Read Less

I have used this vet for about one year for vet services and boarding services. The first time I went on vacation and left my miniature pincher, I was having her fixed. I was quoted the fees upon drop off. While I was out of the country the vet called and left a message stating that the fees would be more because the dog was in heat during the procedure. I knew this wasn't true because my dog had finished her cycle about three weeks prior to me boarding her. The second bad experience was when the same dog began to lose hair on her neck. I took her to the vet and the vet sold me some pills. ][No testing no nothing. Just an enormous office visit bill and meds. They didn't work and the hair continued to fall out. I called and the vet said that it was my fault because she had offered steroids and I said I didn't want any. I then took my dogs to another vet (Vanguard) and they did the test and found no parasites. Therefore, my dog shouldn't have been on any meds at all. The Vet at Vanguard stated that Princess' (my dog) skin was irritated probably from the collar. I removed the collar and within a month the hair began to grow back. The third incident and the last time I will ever go to this vet was this last vacation. I boarded both my dogs (a teacup yorkie and a miniature pincher). They were there for 9 days.I dropped them off with food and feeding instructions and bags of treats for extra goodies. When I had returned My miniature pincher had went from 13.4 lbs to 10.5 lbs. I could see her hind legs sticking out and I could count all her ribs. she looked terrible. They handed me back my bags of food and one was still half full. They also handed me back my bags of extra cookies and bones and none had been given to the dogs. I just paid and left. I don't know what happened and I don't care but I will never take my dogs back and others should beware. I picked my dogs up last Monday and it is now Sunday. The miniature pincher looks better but not perfect and she is starting to act like her normal self. When she first came home she was very quiet. This is unusual for her. She is a barker. Well, not anymore. And I don't know why. I thought this vet was overpriced but if its worth it then ok. It turned out to be the worst vet I have experienced. This is the first review I have ever written about a vet. Read Less

We moved to Fischer after 20 years in San Antonio and were very concerned that we would not find a vet as caring as our current one. When one of our cats reacted poorly to the stress of the move, we took him to the Bulverde Animal Hospital and were very pleased to find a very caring staff and understanding Dr. Kothman who gave us some good advice on how to keep him calm after treating him for a urinary tract infection. Recently, we became very alarmed when a cyst on his back broke open and called to get an appointment. I recently moved to Bulverde. I called BAH and spoke with Whitney about the fact that I needed a specific medicine and asked if they could provide it. She assured me that they could. I made an appointment for December 20th.  One of my other dogs was having increased medical issues. On December 18, that dog stopped eating.  I scheduled an appointment for him on the 20th also.  When I arrived the girls behind the counter barely acknowledged our presence.  A young male came from the back and immediately told me that I should consider the medicine that they carried, not the medicine for which I had specifically made the appointment. Dr. Bunting came in; she told me that I wanted the medicine they carried and that she was not even sure that they could get the medicine I wanted.  After some arguing about the fact that I came in specifically because they said they could provide the medicine, Dr. Bunting agreed to look into it. Then I brought in my sick dog.  I was given an estimate for the work (a shot and two medicines).  Then the vet tech brought in the medicine and stated I was good to go; I reminded him that they had not yet given my dog the shot.  The next morning I gave the second dog medicine and he vomited. Over that day his health deteriorated.  He still had not eaten; he stopped drinking.  He would vomit and excrete a dark liquid.  Monday morning I called the vet to ask what to do and to check on the medicine for the other dog.  The girl who answered the phone, a Stephanie (there are three), could not find any record that my dogs were there on the 20th.  I had to talk with her for several minutes before she could find the records. She was very confused.  I told her that I needed to know what I should do for my dog because he was so sick.  She could not help me or even tell me when the vet would be available.  She called me back several times about my first dog's medicine.  I again inquired about my other dogs' needs and told her the condition he was in; she said the vet was not available.  At some point I called back and spoke to another Stephanie; she tried to find my dog's information online, could not, then passed me to another Stephanie who started the question process all over again.  I asked about speaking with a vet, any vet, and was told none was available.  I was told Dr. Bunting was in surgery and she would be left a message. I call over a dozen other local vets to see if they could make me an appointment to euthanize my dog.  His health had deteriorated so much that he could rarely stand.  None had an appointment before Xmas.  I called BAH back and scheduled an appointment for Tuesday night to have my dog euthanized.  There was no "I'm sorry," no compassion, no comforting, no offer of even an appointment for Monday night to spare him another night of pain.  I asked what the process would be and oddly received an articulate explanation.  We went over the fact I wanted cremation, what type of cremation and urn I wanted, and I was provided with a cost estimate based on those requests. Eventually Dr. Bunting called me back.  She immediately scolded me, stating that she did not even start work until 2 so I should not have expected her to call until later.  I was never told her schedule and had asked to talk with any vet.  Later conversations indicated that Theresa, the owner's wife and office manager, was standing next to Stephanie when I was asking about talking to a vet, but she was unwilling to assist with the conversation.  Dr. Bunting affirmed my decision to euthanize my dog.On the night of the euthanasia, Stephanie awkwardly picked up my dog, causing him pain.  I brought a blanket; he was laid on the floor.  Stephanie then asked me what I wanted done with him.  I was confused as I had settled this over the phone.  After I told her again the type of cremation I wanted, she took my dog to another room.  Theresa came in; I stated that her staff should have already known what services I wanted and that her staff was constantly confused.  She started yelling at me that I should have never called the office more than once on Monday and that I should have just waited, despite the condition of my dog.  She took my credit card and processed payment while yelling at me.  My dog was returned to the room and laid on the floor; still she was yelling at me, over top of my dying dog.  I thanked her for making a difficult process, even more difficult.  She stated that it did not matter to her how I felt. I asked if we could just finish the process as my dog was in pain but she kept yelling at me.  She handed me what was supposed to be the receipt for the services for which I just paid, but wasn't.  Fortunately, Dr. Bunting came in and performed the euthanasia. She apologized for my loss and for the horrible treatment I received from Theresa.  I told her I never would have come back to their office after the first appointment but for the fact that every other vet in the area was booked. I'd first like to state that I never leave negative reviews on establishments, I have to be pretty driven to do so. This place drove me right over the edge. I've not been happy with the veterinary selection since I moved here, but this place was the absolute worst!I recently had my first, and last, appointment at Bulverde Animal Hopsital. I went for two reasons, an ear infection in my shepherd's left ear and routine heartworm test and pills. My mother tagged along with her little dog as she needed heartworm test and pills as well. When we get called in, most of our dog's vitals were checked by a seemingly adolescent girl (who was probably bathing dogs at Petco two weeks ago), not the doctor. Then she takes our dogs INTO THE BACK ROOM without us, assumingly to do the blood test, we weren't told anything by said seventeen year old. Great, not happy about this already. After the dogs were back, my mom's dog REEKED of anal glands. That, in itself, is not a problem. Dogs freak out, especially when taken into a back room without their person, the problem was they didn't even ATTEMPT to clean it up. My mother had to bathe her when we got home. Thanks Bulverde seventeen year old, how about a baby wipe or something? Then, when the doctor DID decide to grace us with his presence for two and a half minutes, he quickly looks into my dog's left ear and exclaimed "Everything looks GREAT!" Really? Because I can smell her from across the room and I'm getting about two pounds of gunk out of it every day. He also had the charts for the dogs completely messed up and backwards. But that's what happens when you have teenagers running your clinic for you and doing everything. I said forget this place and we decided to leave, I'll obviously have to spend money somewhere else to get this taken care of.This is where it gets really fun. We go to check out and pay. We are both being charged, separately, for one heartworm test and a 6 month supply of pills. Me, included, since "everything looks GREAT!" in my dogs infected ear. The total comes to 200 dollars! We were both stunned and snuck glances at each other. Very uncomfortable. I've never been so robbed and blown off at any doctor's office, let alone a veterinarian's. Then, when I get home, I realize there are two referral cards in the packet they gave me. With my client number on it, not my name, as referral for the card holder. Wow. Really? You really are just a number dispensing exorbitant amounts of money at this place. I felt like I was at Petsmart or something. I now drive 20 plus miles to a fantastic vet in SA who cleared up the ear infection almost immediately. I did have to treat it twice it was so bad and out of control at that point. But, everything looks great, right? The new vet couldn't understand why any doctor would look in that ear and think so. Neither can I. So thanks for mutton, Bulverde Animal Hospital. Read Less

I had to do a review for this vet! We just moved to Bulverde with my pregnant Shih-Tzu. I had taken her for her bloodwork, ultrasound, etc. to another clinic up 281. Well, the day she went into labor she was having problems so I called the vet I had taken her to & they informed me that they do not handle deliveries...woulda been nice to be told that before!! Anyhow, I called Bulverde Animal Hospital & was WELCOMED to bring her, even though he had multiple surgeries that day & was booked solid. My precious baby had an emergency C-section, had 4 healthy babies, and is doing great. Dr. Kothman & his staff were nothing short of AMAZING! They were knowledgeable, kind & genuinely concerned for my baby & her babies. Walked me through everything they needed to do, and even called me a couple of days later to check on my baby. Gained a customer that day & I'll refer everyone to them! Read Less

Read Less

Bulverde Animal Hospital is wonderful! The docs and the entire staff take such good care of our pets and pay close attention to their physical and emotional well being. Their hours are super convenient, they are reasonably priced, and they never push any unnecessary tests or treatment. Without a doubt, I know my pets are getting the best possible care. Dr. Bunting and Dr. K are fantastic! Read Less

I prepaid for my kennel fees on Friday.  I was told pick up hours on Sunday were from 4-6.  A staff member calls at 4 on Sunday, to say I'm late picking my pets up. He says, pickup hours are from 2-4.  I explain what I was told! Monday I go to pay and pick my dogs up.  The front desk says, pick up hours are from 4-6!  The staff member got questioned and he flat out lied about what he told me.  I had to pay for another day of kennel fees!  And obviously it was the staff's fault.  So just beware of what the terms are here at this place.  They are nice here, but service isn't what it seems.  Plus, the receptionist is so rude!!  I called to make a complaint and I'm told no one has time for me. I'll be taking my business somewhere else. Read Less

Read Less

We have been taking our animals to Bulverde Animal Hospital since 1995 when we moved to Bulverde. \n\nDr. Kothman and his staff are awesome. They are always there when you need them. We have had animal injuries and animal illness such as cancer and he and his staff are very understanding. They have comforted me when I had to put an animal down and have laughed with me when 2 dogs got skunked and the smell was unreal. \n\nThere is always a follow up call to check on how your animal is doing after a clinic visit. The staff truly treats you as family and calls you by name. They also show an absolute love and caring attitude toward our pets and know them by name. Would not think of going anywhere else!!!
