We were visiting Dallas from Austin this weekend & our 13 lb dog was attacked by an 80lb shepherd mix. I've used this vet a few times with our foster animals and liked the staff. So I decided to give them a try with a kitten that I was in the process of adopting and paid for the bill myself. Their prices were on the high side of average, but what really bugs me is the charge of the medication. They charged me $32.28 for .16ml of a generic pain med, Meloxicam. Do you know how LITTLE .16ml is? So I called to inquire, as generally, a 20-30ml BOTTLE of the branded drug Metacam is that price, so I thought maybe they accidentally charged me for a full bottle. NOPE - they just decided to charge a 125% (did I even do that math correctly) for a generic medication. She tried to explain how the suspension is more expensive but I've bought Metacam before and had looked up the pricing before I even called. No apologies, nothing. Except my money in their pocket. So while I liked the vets, I feel like they did a GREAT job of ripping me off and can't see myself going here again with my personal business. And I should mention that we have three dogs and three cats of our own for which I was shopping for a new, closer vet clinic. What is that line from "Pretty Woman" - "Big mistake. Big. Huge." The staff here has been super friendly and tentative to my bearded dragon. I spoke with a vet tech for quite a while when I originally called, she was more than happy to answer my questions and give me her best evaluation of the situation. After his appointment, I still had concerns a few days following. A different vet tech was also really friendly and helped me to the best of her ability. Dr. Lauren called me back herself, which I thought was really awesome since that's not something that's very common anymore, usually it's delegated to someone else. She left a detailed message and it was comforting to see that the staff clearly cared about my little scale baby's health as much as I do. I would HIGHLY recommend this office. MUST RAVE ABOUT THIS VET!! If you're looking for someone to care for your precious furry baby in DFW-- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them! Dr. Lauren and the entire team were beyond excellent with our baby Zoe and with a very nervous mama & daddy. The rating on here only goes to 5 stars, but I give them 10!! From the moment we walked in we were treated with love, compassion and kindness. Zoe is NOT the easiest dog and Heather & Dr. Lauren calmed her down and treated her like their own. When your furry baby is in her final days, special understanding and care is needed because emotions are running high. Dr. Lauren made me feel at peace and went over her bloodwork and ultrasound in full detail so we had absolutely no question about what was going on in her frail old body. She spoke to us with such patience and referred us to an overnight emergency clinic and they were also amazing MedVet - Dallas. She filled their docs in thoroughly on Zoe's issues. Then she called me the next day to check on us and send her love when she heard Zoe had passed. Dr. Lauren went above and beyond. My poor baby (Terrier Mix) had horrible allergies. I had taken him to his normal vet and was not satisfied with the treatment/answer I received. I am so happy I decided to get a second opinion. ***Verbal contract in Texas is LEGAL*** This clinic and hospital is not worth your time. My fiance called about an appointment, and, before the appointment, we were told that the booster and exam was NOT to be charged, yet they charged. (Being that verbal contract is legal in the state of Texas, as aforementioned, we should have been refunded) However, whoever it is that answers the phone for scheduling and informing needs to know exactly they are taking about, what they have said and not deceive, because, from the experience I endured, I found that this clinic is not worth any one person's time and they are NOT to be a trusted source whatsoever. Several months ago, I brought my very senior cat Simba in to see Dr.Lauren at Preston Road Animal Hospital. I was a hot mess because Simba is my fur baby of 17 years and he had lost a ton of weight and I felt I waited too long because I was unemployed and just finished my own cancer fight. Dr. Lauren took the time to gently examine him along with Richard. They were both so kind and gentle with him. Dr. Lauren took her valuable time to explain to me exactly what was going on with him as well as shared her story about the same diagnosis with her fur baby. I stopped crying and listened intently as the program we were going to undertake to make simba comfortable while treating his kidney disease. In the several months since his diagnosis, Dr. Lauren has been phenomenal in reaching out and discussing any concerns and next steps. I am always made to feel warm and welcome whenever Simba and I visit and Simba loves all of the kisses he gets when he is passed around from Richard,Jennifer, Ashley, Amber, Heather et al. I was taught how to give Simba his iv by myself and was told they were there if I couldn't do it. Simba usually doesn't like going to the vet and he roars about it. He has a white coat phobia. In the last visits... Dr. Lauren has come in without her coat because she knows this. Who does this? So to wrap it up... We have been patients of Chastain Veterinary for two years and cannot imagine our furr babies under the care of anyone else. We have had the privilege of working with Dr. Sue on a few occasions and we absolutely love her, I feel confident that she cares for our dogs as if they were her own! We have also had numerous positive experiences with all the doctors and staff at both the Mckinney and Preston locations, Chastain goes above and beyond in all areas of practice. They are wonderful with patient correspondence we leave every appointment feeling well informed, the doctors take their time during visits to answer all of your questions/concerns, and will help you choose the best options for your pet. You get outstanding personalized care we never feel rushed like just another number, or that we are recieving subpar patient care like we did in the past at big chain veterinary clinics. All of the Chastain group are so welcoming and compassionate, I have watched them great each pet by name as they come through the door. When my adopted senior had a seizure and began having trouble with bowel control and movement afterward, I took him to Chastain. They ran a test battery and came back with a diagnosis of a likely tumor on his brain. They gave me some meds to try to control the seizures and help with arthritis pain, but two weeks later, with no improvement, I made the decision to let him go.I've had horrible experiences in the past with euthanizing a beloved pet in a vets office that didn't care about me or her, and this experience was NOTHING like that. They made it clear that I was not rushed, that this was happening on my terms and when I was ready. They had a room ready when we arrived a little early, dimly lit, with a blanket on the table for my sweet Lou, and a full box of tissues. They checked on us every fifteen minutes until I said I was ready, fully explained what was going to happen and made sure I understood and that I had the right expectations. After, they let me stay with him for as long as I wanted. They were warm, welcoming, and truly cared about me and Lou. I still take my other dog and cat there, as that experience has made me a customer for life. They are fantastic people that really care about your animal. The vets are extremely thorough. To those calling them expensive up-sellers, I had been to numerous vets across the country with Lou. They were reasonably priced, and you can say no to tests you don't want. Paying for a veterinarian is part of owning a pet - if you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the dog. Read Less

I have used Chastain Preston Road Animal Hospital for about 16 years.  They are wonderful.  The staff has always been very helpful and friendly.  My dogs have seen several vets over the years and they have all been very personable and seemed to be quite knowledgeable.  They are very good about answering questions and giving specific instructions.  At one point it seemed that I was getting lots of tests recommended and was pushed to buy several different products, but that seems to have settled down in the past couple of years.  The bottom line is that I trust them with the health of my pets and that is what is important! I brought my new puppy here and ever since day 1 she has been treated like one of the family. All the vets and assistants at this location know her and acknowledge her by name when she comes in. She really enjoys coming here and I wouldn't feel comfortable boarding her anywhere else. I also have a "vicious" chihuahua that I started bringing here as well and they are very understanding of her needs. Although she will never show it, I know she loves coming here as well. One thing that really came in handy was the emergency 24 hour vet clinic. This location provided the number for me when I first started coming here and I needed it at midnight when my chihuahua choked on her rawhide. I honestly cannot say I would have made it anywhere on time without the number and address from this clinic. You guys rock! Read Less

We rescued two ferrets and they had been mistreated before we ever got them .... they were amazing with our Lucy. She had some unusual medical issues and they did everything they could to save her .... but it was just more than her tiny body could handle. Dr. Sue even gave us her cell phone number to call if we had questions. Our Bear was just an older fella and passed away of old age in his sleep .... but our other six ferret babies are happy, healthy and doing great. The staff was so sweet when we lost both Bear and Lucy ... even though I have never heard of it they offered us information about a support group for the loss of a pet. They even sent us notes about their sympathies for our loss. I think that the staff members are just as important as the doctors and these people are really caring and sensitive. I cannot forget the Reba baby, our dog. She is a young girl (2) and still a pup in a lot of ways. I can honestly say, that these people just make us all very comfortable. Read Less

This office is a 30 minute drive for me, but was recommended by a friend so I decided to take my cats there. At first, I was happy with them, but not anymore. I have encountered very rude personnel over the person. I requested a prescription be mailed to me and when it was, it was for the incorrect amount. When I requested a corrected prescription be mailed to me, I was told the vet would have to call me. That was yesterday. I am still waiting for that call. Update 7/9: I spoke with the office manager today and feel confident my issues will be resolved. I also received an apology for the rude staff member I spoke to on the phone. Dr. Julie Chabira examined my two female Sugar Gliders. They were so so so sweet to them. They asked a lot of questions. They didn't just check my animals physical body but asked about their routine, diet, and personalities. They care so much. This is the best vet experience I have ever had. I think I may drive over an hour even to get my dog checked with them because it was so great. The free initial visit is amazing. The cost of a pet is expensive in the beginning and that helps so much :)Read Less

Dr. Julie is so good with my pet & he is so horrible at the vet. I really trust the people that work here & they also call to check on my dog after a visit. We visited Chastain (their LBJ location) this week and our kittens and we were treated so warmly. We were receiving a consultation for a potential surgery and the consultation (because it was an initial visit) was free of charge AND extremely informative. Dr. Lauren and her staff were so hospitable, gracious and kind.They do not claim to be the least expensive or most cost-competitive veterinary option in Dallas but they are determined to deliver quality, positive services. We had to wait a little while on arrival, but we were offered same day appt for somewhat urgent issue with my foster dog. Staff was great!  My foster is still fearful of new peeps and the staff and vet were fantastic with him. We very much appreciate the staff helping our foster!!  Thank You so much!  Dr Sue saw us. I read several other reviews. In my opinion, their pricing isn't much different than many other vets. You might find cheaper, but do your homework on vets BEFORE you go....so you don't get as many surprises. I can see where customers might be upset if they spend money on tests and then they are only given an 'opinion' / not certainty about a diagnosis...but, well, that's what healthcare is (even for humans). Medicine is not an exact science, people. You shouldn't be a pet owner if there is no room for uncertainty with your pet's health or what the costs may be, IMO.  Stay home and get your free opinion from the internet....if you seek medical care anywhere else, any facility has expenses and costs money to run. I would have never expected such excellent care or bedside manner, and have never received it from even one of MY doctors. Doctor Lauren was absolutely amazing.My fiancée brought our dog in who had an abcessed tooth and had suddenly gone blind. We had thought the swelling under his eye had caused it. It happened on saturday, and we made an appt for Sunday. Dr. Lauren mentioned she was concerned about a tumor, since sudden blindness and a few other symptoms were not typical of a tooth abcess. For the sake of testing, they stayed well past closing hours, with my fiancée feeling no sense that they were sacrificing care just to go home at the end of the day. They only charged for an xray, and for some meds to help make him more comfortable until his follow up appointment. Fast forward a few days, and we can tell that basically the life has gone out of our pup. He is extremely depressed, can't see so we are having to carry him down stairs to potty, put his water dish in front of him... I take him in for his follow up, worried that I may need to have him put to sleep. Dr. Lauren also notices a drastic change since a few days prior, and we decide he is in too much pain. While waiting for my fiancée to be there, they put him on oxygen and a nurse sat with him to pet him and keep him from stressing. The nurses were very caring and patient. When my fiancée arrived and we were ready for the procedure, Dr. Lauren was extremely informative, empathetic, and comforting. She continued petting him and showing concern, even after he went to sleep. Like i said, people doctors should have this bedside manner. She even held him and carried him out to our car afterward.Days later I find myself wondering if we were supposed to pay something that day. I check the mail, expecting to find a bill, but instead there is a typed thank you letter containing a $25 gift card for future services for our other pups. I was really shocked. But what prompted me to give this 5 star review is the truly heartfelt sympathy card i received yesterday, handwritten by Dr. Lauren, even containing details of his history that I had only briefly mentioned. It was signed by the whole staff. This truly touched my heart, to know that someone who spent all of 3 hours with my dog cared about him enough to write out this card. As long as I live in the DFW area, I will continue taking my animals to this clinic. Read Less

Pros: Friendly staff, amazing groomer on staff, clean facilitiesCons: Cost, unnecessary tests, up charging tests, misdiagnosis I echo the comments of many previous reviewers. The staff here is phenomenal. They're very friendly, love animals, and remember personal details about you that makes the entire visit personable. That's where it ends. The veterinarians and technicians constantly try to sell unnecessary procedures and tests on your animals. I was horribly mislead by the "free exam." That was the only free thing. The four tests run (fecal, blood work, ultra sound, etc.) for my perfectly healthy dog was ridiculous. My first dog that I took here was also misdiagnosed with a heart murmur. Further testing by my new vet told me that there was nothing wrong with her. Again, hundreds of dollars of wasted test money. I hate to say this, but the business is not there to take care of animals, they're operating to make as much money as possible. They're in the perfect area for it. As an example, a simple antibiotic ran me $55 at this clinic and only $13.50 at my new vet. They're running a racket and taking advantage of animals and their owners. Avoid at all costs. Read Less

Tons of praise for Preston Road Animal Hospital! I took my cat to two vets (The Vet in Richardson and Valley View Animal Center) since last September trying to get her ear problems diagnosed. Treatment after treatment didn't work, and their conclusion was "she's fine". Well now she is having serious respiratory issues despite being 'perfectly healthy' and 2 years old! Dr. Dana and her staff helped figure out that Savannah has a serious problem. They've been so politely holding my hand throughout trying to figure out what's wrong with her. They have been so patient and caring. I don't know if Savannah would have survived if they hadn't help figure out something is very wrong!I'll update with how everything turns out. Read Less

Dr. Sue, Dr. Julie, & Dr. Megan are the best veterinarians that have treated my pets. They saved my puppy's life! I'm so glad I found them, even though it was somewhat by accident. When I adopted my puppy from a rescue organization, they were on the list for one free health exam. They went above & beyond treating my very sick puppy who came to me with with kennel cough from the shelter. The cough developed into an infection & then pneumonia, & she needed new meds & nebulizer treatments on an outpatient basis for 3 days. They warned me that her condition could be fatal while assuring me they would do everything they could. They took such good care of her & endured my endless phone calls & questions with kindness. Dr. Julie even stuck around 15 minutes after closing to answer my questions one evening. After many visits & lots of help, Cleo is a much healthier, happier puppy! I have personally interacted with all 3 of the doctors as they shared the responsibility of healing my dog, & they are very knowledgeable and personable.  The staff all know my dog & treat her very well. I've been very happy with the level of care & service at PRAH & would recommend them to anyone. They are all obviously animal lovers like myself & they understand that pets are like children to us. I originally picked this place because I lived in close proximity of the clinic. I have since moved farther from the location, however I have continued to bring my dog here because I have had good experiences every time I have been. I have not had issues scheduling appointments and always seem flexible with my schedule. The staff has always been friendly and usually conduct a follow up call to check up on your pet a couple of days after your visit. Dr. Megan has been able to understand and relate to my problems since she has the same breed of dog as I. I also really enjoy they will trim your pet's nails at no charge to you! When they send you reminders in the mail for visits, they also include a discount if you schedule a visit on or before the date listed on the reminder. I would highly recommend this place! Read Less

We love this vet, all of the staff is kind and very helpful and they love all the animals. They are always very compassionate and helpful when an animal is sick or injured.
