AVOID DR. WEST! I've been a Client for 3 or 4 years now I think. To date, my experience has been largely good. Not exceptional, but better than the pet store practices, so I've been satisfied. Today though, I had an experience so terrible that I feel obligated to share. My lab has been sick all weekend - vomiting and diarrhea for about three days - so I called this morning and asked if they could work us in. They got me in and the appointment was going well with the assistants getting vitals and basics out of the way. They took a stool sample for analysis and we waited for a few minutes for that to finish. Dr. West walked in, first time I had met her mind you, and after introductions she said with a deadpan straight face that they had run fecal and unfortunately Finn was not going to make it - the obvious implication being that Finn was going to die. She remained silent for what felt like an eternity, I was shocked and immediately began to break down. Only then did she play if off as some kind of joke. With me in process of breakdown, she said he was going to be fine. Having lost a dog a few months earlier, those emotions came back to me and it was all I could do for the remainder of the appointment not to completely lose it, which I did shortly after leaving. Mind you, her only response was to say that it was a foot in mouth moment. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Took the meds, paid the fee which was not discounted and left as quickly as I could. The issue here is that it never dawned on her that it was inappropriate. It shows a shocking degree of insensitivity to joke about the death of a pet and no acknowledgement that we see these animals as our family - our children even! I wonder what would happen if a pediatrician told a worried mother or father that their child wouldn't make it, just to laugh and say it was a joke - how would that be received? I caution everyone reading this to avoid Dr. West. I spoke with the practice manager and told her I would give them one more opportunity based on my generally positive history, but that I would never see Dr. West again. I take my horses to Dr. West. She and all of the doctors are outstanding. One of our horses suffered from colic last year and Dr. Kotzur came out late on a Sunday night and saved the day. Horse made it thru and we are very grateful. Service and facilities are very good. Highly recommend. Read Less

I cannot thank Sunset Canyon Veterinary enough. We had a very sick FFA goat that we were trying to get examined for kidney stones which can be very serious. The vet offered to stay even though they were closed and we could not make it there for an hour. Upon arriving the vet took his time to carefully examine the animal and found that his bladder had burst. There were no real viable options but to put the animal down. My daughter who plans to be a vet stayed with the animal and the vet while he was given the injection and explained everything to her. Super compassionate and just an overall awesome clinic. Excellent facility with a caring staff. They have been here for a long time and have taken care of my families animals for many years. Glenn is a great vet who has made several house calls. This clinic is the most unprofessional clinic I have ever had tend to my animals.  The veterinarian that saw our Scottie Oliver  was awesome. The others I really have nothing I can compliment them on.I referred a friend to this vet and they somehow put his bill on my acct. it is policy that you have to put a credit card on file before they will do a house call.  I put my credit card on file at least three different times, then while I was having surgery they left 1 voicemail for an outstanding bill and sent a certified letter for payment.  When I went in to pay the bill, I had to wait 45 minutes in the lobby before the acct manager came down stairs to talk to me, "they said I have no card on file, "which they had me do before they would come out to our house" She was so rude, accusing me of basically lying about a dog named "Axel" being mineThen told me I would have to get a lawyer to get this persons charges for his dog off my acct.Never did she apologize not once, she would not take this persons charges off my acct.I will be suing the crap out of this vet.  Poor customer service I hear more and more complaints about this vet from my neighbors as time goes on So if you don't want to pay your bill just put it on someone else acct you won't have to it it Read Less

My dog has a torn ACL, and was told by the person on the phone who set up my appointment that they take CareCredit and can do payment plans for my dog's surgery. I already knew she had a torn ACL which they knew because I told them and brought the emergency vet paperwork, and I drove 45 minutes each way expecting to talk to them about surgery options. Only when I got there, I was charged $45 for a vet to tell me she had a torn ACL (I know?????) And that they would call the surgeon and I needed to set up and pay for an appointment with him, EVEN THOUGH I was told on the phone that's why I was there!! When i went to pay for the useless exam, I was informed that there was a $200 minimum to use CareCredit!! And that they DO NOT do payment plans. The people there have attitudes and lie to you. I have used this clinic over 20 years for dogs, cats and horses and seen most of the vets. Drs. A and L Crossland, Dr Portie, Dr Colt Dietz, Dr. Pitmon and I believe Dr. West twice. It has always been a good experience. I lived in Dallas for a few years and the vet care prices were outrageous. So nice to be back in Austin! This place is well priced and more than worth it. My first experiences with Sunset Canyon dates back to when the Crosslands were young vets in a small clinic on the opposite side of Hwy 290 - I show and occasionally breed boxers and can tell you that the entire staff is trusted. My only regret is that they no longer do small animal emergencies (and if there is ever going to be a need for a c-section, you can bet it will be in the middle of the night). I just can't say enough good things about this vet. There's good reasons they are so busy and have such an excellent reputation. My wife and I moved from Austin to Dripping Springs 4 years ago. Since that time we have taken our cats to Sunset Canyon Veterinary Clinic and we usually deal with Glen Portie, DVM who is super with cats. He is always thorough, kind, very clear with his comments and suggestions for care, etc. Today we took our 15 year old cat to SCVC as we knew we were approaching the time when the cat would need to be put down. We were still not sure what our decision would be, but after a thorough exam of the cat, Dr. Portie was, as usual, kind, caring and compassionate and completely explained the situation with our elderly cat and what our options were. He allowed my wife and me time alone to make a decision, and we ultimately decided to put the animal down. Dr. Portie performed the task in a kind, compassionate, and caring manner in a way we felt certain that our beloved pet passed away quickly and painlessly. We put our beloved sheltie, Skip down yesterday. He was 16 years old and was sick yet making the decision to do this was heartbreaking for our entire family. At our first visit more than 3 years ago, Dr. Portie sat on the floor and let both of our skeptical dogs come to him. From that moment on, I knew we had chosen the right place. The doctors and all the staff have always been wonderful in caring for our 2 dogs and their compassion at a time when we were falling apart was beyond measure. It just so happened that Dr. Portie was the doctor to care for Skip in his last moments and he was as caring as the first time he ever saw my sweet dog. With a handful of receptionists working the front desk, you would think that at least ONE of them would have good customer service. Had a receptionist look me in the face and tell me "thats not my job". When I was pointed in the direction of someone whos job it was, I was treated like an idiot for asking questions. The meds I was given were not explained to me even after I asked. None of my questions were answered. It was like they were just too busy for me. The client service team doesn't care if they upset or offend you in any way. Why would they? Not to mention the cost of treatment was outrageous, and I didn't even speak to a DR!I will never be back. Today, April 23, we rushed our 17 yr old Siberian Huskey mix to our Vet! I walked in first asking if I should bring her in main door or in the drive? The Vet assistant answered, either one! Room 5 is open. I went back to Tacoma in our car telling my wife we were going inside main door. I walked up to door and the staff came and opened the door for us! Sunset Canyon Veterinary Clinic is the only place I ever want to take my animals for care.  I have been to several vet clinics.   Without exception, all others have made me sick at my stomach & extremely anxious.  I always left with more questions than answers, felt over charged, ignored & irritated.  Sunset Canyon is the complete opposite.  The first time I walked in to the warm, welcoming, rustic, farmhouse feeling clinic I knew it was different.  The front desk staff is efficient, knowledgeable & kind.  The vet techs are great.  There are several vets on staff & they are all truly fantastic humans & veterinarians.  Our vet is Dr. Glen Portie, I can't say enough complimentary things about him.  We are Great Dane lovers & that comes with the need for a curious & patient veterinarian.  Dr. Portie treats us like we know something about our dogs.  He is curious, kind, brilliant, does not give up & makes us laugh.  It is remarkable to have a skilled vet that is like having a partner in the care of our beloved pups.  We are forever grateful! I've been going to sunset canyon vet clinic for probably 20 years now? I can't imagine trusting anyone else with my dogs the way I trust sunset canyon. Every vet I've interacted with over the years has gone above and beyond, caring for my animals. They're reasonably priced, and super friendly. Everyone there seems to work well together as a team. Specifically, a year ago this month, one of my dogs mauled the other one. It was a difficult decision to put the dog who mauled down, and it's been an intense experience caring for the dog who was mauled. Several of the vets have been helpful during this time, but most of all Erin West has done so much to take such great care of Sophie! I had a gravely ill beloved family cat, and the vet whom I had taken her to for 8 years did not return my call, even though I confirmed she had received the message. I was distraught, and went up to Sunset Canyon Vets when they opened. The staff there was warm and compassionate, despite dealing with new software, and ushered me into a waiting room right away. Dr. Kotzur examined my dear kitty and confirmed my worst suspicions. He told me of some possible treatment options, but did not sugar coat anything. When I decided it was best to put her down, he was very sympathetic and supportive, and he and his vet tech were wonderful. The first thing Dr. Kotzur said to his tech when I brought my kitty in was, please go get a towel for her, we don't want her lying on the cold table. I will now bring my remaining pets there. I was glad that my kitty was attended to in a warm, respectful manner during her final moments. The only improvement I might suggest is a separate entrance or waiting area for cat owners. There were a few yappy small dogs when we came in, and I know it stressed my very sick cat a bit. But I am grateful that SCVC was there for us.Read Less

First vet since having dogs as a kid. 2.5 year old mutt has been seen only by these folks. They are always very pleasant: to me, my family and my dog. I am not a guy who wants to do more than the basics in med care for a dog, and I don't feel pressured. I have been going to this vet clinic with my animals for many years now. I used to own horses and live in the Lakeway area and Dr. Crossland would come out to our house for a minimal fee and take care of the horses and dogs too while he was there. We no longer own horses but I pass 5 different vet clinics in Lakeway to take my dogs to this vet clinic. I tried to get my dog in to see Dr. Crossland for an emergency! He staff was not helpful and did not care that I had been using Sunset Canyon for 12 years. She would not try work me in at all. She said the soonest any vet could see me was in 7-8 days. BS!!! My dog could of been dead if it was not for Dr. Hudson at DSAH....Thank god he and his staff care about all their patients! Dr Pittman is a great vet. She has helped us with our dogs and cats over the many years that she has been at Sunset Canyon Vet. SHe helped us tremendously with the health and referral for our loving golden retriever. Very knowledgeable and caring staff. Front office staff is usually very nice and caring. Sometimes they are overwhelmed by the amount of pets being seen on a daily basis. Overall as long as I live in Dripping Springs, Sunset Canyon Vet will see our pets. Read Less

Since moving across the country I have dealt with many different vet centers/hospitals. I CANNOT say enough about how wonderful their vets are esp. Dr. Lamar (Crossland) and Dr. Pruitt are JEWELS!! The breed of dog I have is NOt an easy breed as they come with so many health issues/airway issues so you must be VERY knowledgable and careful in their management of this type of dog. I would not trust anyone else with my dogs and love them to death. As I work in the medical field I too think interpersonal skills and your impressions coming through the door are SO important. The front staff for the most part are sadly stone faced and unfriendly. One girl likes to roll her eyes frequently when you are asking about something which as I am Master's prepared I DO not think I can be considered ignorant nor asking something foolish /stupid. That said I am also VERY well educated in the medical field which often with disease processes can be very similar in the management in a canine and what to look for. Carla and Fred are very kind and always friendly and wish to be efficient and kind. To the others it just seems like its ""just a job"" and a boring one at that. Wish something could be done about this...someone smiling and acting alittle enthusiastic even when you might not be feeling this way on any given day (as we all can). The vets are great and I apreciate their service but the front office staff leaves much to be desired. Since the front office staff is your first impression I hope the clinic doesn't lose business b/c of them. The staff ignores you when you come in, leaves you on hold forever, hangs up on you, and are just generally unhelpful and unfriendly. I think the main problem is the office manager, since she is the leader everybody follows her and she seems to always be in a bad mood. I have used this vet for years & the vets are great, the vet techs are helpful and polite, but the office mgr. is always having a bad day! My dogs are seen by Dr. Crossland @ Sunset Canyon Vet Clinic. I trust him entirely with my dogs and would never change vets no matter what. I have not actually had a problem with the ladies who work at the front. I find them to be pretty efficient. I usually talk to Amanda or Carla when I call, but all the ladies (and one guy who works up front) are always helpful. The vet assistants are nice too. Read Less

I have used Sunset Canyon Vet clinic since 2000. I have never had a poor experiance with the front desk staff. I understand that, as with all businesses, times can get hectic and a little chaotic. This is doubly true for a business that centers around animals. Things do not always happen the way you want them to. Dr. Portie and Dr. Pitmon are the vets that usually care for my 3 dogs, cat and pony. I have also dealt with Dr. Edquist, and Dr. Pruett. And I have known Amber & Lamar Crossland for many years. When I call to make an appointment, the staff are nice and helpful. When I arrive, they greet me by name.
