I'm from Brownsville Texas Altas Palmas has a Very professional and wonderful staff I used to take my bunnies to companion animal clinic here in Brownsville Texas but I'd rather drive an extra 26 miles knowing that my bunnies are being taken care of with these wonderful doctors this is the second time I've been there and both times had wonderful experiences and they don't charge you an arm and a leg like my previous doctor definitely sticking with them. My family has always bad experiences when we visited this clinic. The staff there may care about pets, but they care about money more. They gave us a phoney diagnosis that our dog had severe heartworm and would die if he didn't get treatment immediately. We left and went to a different office who showed us the tests that she did and explained that our dog had no heart worms at all and only needed some antibiotics for a different issue. Needless to say that dog is still alive today. Another experience we had was when one of our neighbors poisoned a dog, and we brought him to Altas Palmas for emergency care even though it was late at night. They promised someone would be there to watch his progress and help him get through the night but obviously they lied. Not only did he die, but he was left alone in the clinic. Do not use this clinic even if it's for yearly shots! You're better off going somewhere else. Read Less

I must say when I did research on vet offices I did hear good and bad things about Altas Palmas: But let me tell you I went by there to get my baby girl (shihtzu) her first round of shots and a fecal exam everyone was so nice they greeted my baby and made her feel welcomed: very quick service i really enjoyed it of course I will be going back next month!!! Dr. Putnam and staff are all great and quick in taking care of my puppy Toby he unexpectedly got very sick and other clinics I would have to wait for a appointment. I walked in and they quickly saw he was having trouble breathing the staff quickly came out and took him to start working on him was like i was watching an episode of greys anatomy lol. Excellent. This was the only veterinarian in the RGV I could find that would treat a Bearded Dragon. I had to come all the way from Edinburg, but it was worth it. He had a severe bacterial infection and lost most of his body weight. The veterinarian was very knowledgeable about treating reptiles. She prescribed medication and a supplement. We would like to thank the staff of Altas Palmas for making the passing of our Mr. Magoo bearable. Tuesday, June 7 was a sad day for us. We had Magoo for 16 yrs. He was our baby. My husband went to a Vet here in Weslaco and he was handed a clipboard to fill out papers and him standing there crying ,holding our baby. They were not respectful or understanding. Altas Palmas made that day some easier. They were very understanding and helpful. They respected Magoo's last day. They made sure that Magoo was wrapped in his blanket and put him in a box. Worst experience of my life!! Took our 8 y/o healthy dog in for a check as he had been mopping around for a couple days. They decided to sedate him to take x-rays, determining he had arthritis in his hips. Told me initially he needed to stay and be observed because he was drooling excessively from his mouth and twitching. Claimed it was a reaction from the meds to sedate. Sent him home reassuring me it would be fine. Long story short, after multiple returns to the office because of no visible progress to getting better, less than 48 hours after initially taking him in my poor baby died in my arms on the way to emergency vet in mcallen. No concern, no explanation. Just a card a week later in the mail. Do not assume they have your pets best interest at heart. DEMAND answers and action!!! Read Less

The staff were very kind n very sweet to our sweet baby boy Cosmo. It was very unexpected n we had to put him to sleep. We were there all morning n they were not only thoughtful of Cosmo but also to my little one n myself. U could feel how much they cared n were just as saddened as we were as its never easy to let go of a furr baby. They almost killed one of my dogs for lack of diagnosis. They prescribed my dog pills for indigestion which had nothing to do with him and charged me 250 dollars. Long story short and 4,000 later my pup survived no thanks to these neglegent Vetanarians. Brought in my guinnea pig for a check up after he sneezed quite a bit (I suspected he had a cold since he'd had pneumonia a couple months back). I got a next day appointment. The vet looked him over, called the previous emergency clinic we'd attended to get his x-rays from when he was sick, took new x-rays, and prescribed the same medicine again so that he wouldn't get worse. I was satisfied with the overall service. We waited a while to be seen, but we were told the doctors had just finished a surgery, so it's probably not too bad on the regular. I've gone to a low cost vet before and it was the worst, I won't say the name but it was close to Combes and we were waiting 30 minutes before anyone acknowledged we were there turns out they were having a "party" in the back which is why no one was at the reception desk. After a therapeutic misadventure at the hands of a vet in that clinic about two years ago that nearly cost my pet's life, resulted in thousands of dollars in additional bills and turned a room of my house into a pet ICU where I was alternately feeding him pureed diet through a surgically implanted feeding tube, checking blood sugars 4X per day and administering insulin, completely preventable with appropriate clinical judgement before this vet instigated that unfortunate chain of events, I became rather selective with whom I would trust my pet's care. So, when my cat stopped eating (an emergency for a cat), I called the practice to see who was there and specifically requested Dr. X. When I got there, I was assured by front desk staff, Dr. X would see my pet. After being left 20 minutes sitting on a bench and approaching lunch hour, I again inquired about seeing Dr. X and was reassured my cat would be seen by Dr. X. 25 minutes after that point, I was informed Dr. X had gone to lunch and my pet would be seen by Dr. Y.. I was strongly tempted to leave immediately, never return, & seek treatment elsewhere, but unfortunately remained. After observations leading me to believe mouth pain (or stomatitis) was the cause of my cat's problems, an incomplete set of vitals (no temperature) were taken. I suggested to the vet mouth pain may be the root cause of my cat's problems. After probing his mouth she stated she thought he had an abscessed tooth, and prescribed an antibiotic. No recommendations for follow-up care were made. And I guess vital signs aren't so vital with them. Or maybe they took to heart the commandment from Samuel Shem's "House of God": "If you don't take a temperature you can't find a fever!".After a week of antibiotics and a pureed diet with blood sugars becoming progressively harder to control, I left for work after giving my cat 3 1/2 units of insulin for a blood glucose in the 330s, and making arrangements for a sitter to check my pet's behavior at time of peak insulin effect. I made two calls (spaced 3 hours apart) to the practice trying to get a return call from my usual vet there concerning what to do next. 7 hours later, I got a call back and faced with that clinical picture was told she couldn't see my pet that day or even the following one.For demonstrated abject veterinary ignorance, total lack of clinical judgment and plain ordinary negligence over a period of years encompassing multiple practitioners complemented by deceitful unprofessionalism by the desk staff rendering it impossible to try and protect my pets from them, I am taking care of my fur babies elsewhere. I chose to take my sick puppy to this clinic but after 3 visits they did not even test to find out what was making her sick. They just charged me for random medicines which did nothing to help. My puppy died of distemper, which they finally diagnosed her with on my 4th and final visit. Then charged me for the visit AND the uthenization. I saw 3 different vets and all of them were horrible. I too had a problem with Dr. Rangel and will never use him again but the other vets there are by far the best vets around. I have used Dr. Dittmen and Dr. Putnam and I highly recommend them. I've used both of them for years and years and they have the highest regard for my pets and their needs. Just saw another vet that I had not used before. She seemed pretty good and very patient with me but the bill seemed extraordinarily high. I paid for a basic fix and am heading to a different vet. Rangel diagnosed my dog, Leeloo, with heartworm, which we already knew (as told by a previous vet). The vet was sketchy and didn't start her on a preventative immediately as do most vets-especially when they find out the dog has heartworm. Which is why we decided to take her to altas palmas. She also had begun coughing, still losing weight, dripping after a spay, and limping suddenly. However, Rangel was disconcerned with my dog's sudden weight loss which made me think I was overanalyzing my dogs digression. Getting answers and information out of this vet was like pulling a tooth-and he's supposed to be the knowledgable one telling me what's wrong with my dog, what to do, and what to be prepared for! HE IS the vet! Since my dog wasn't in great shape heartworm treatment wouldnt be for another few months. As he kicked me out the door with an infection med, heartguard and flea pill, to hurry and take my money, I had to stall him once more to ask him if my dogs front paw would be okay, since one of the reason for bringing her in was that she wasn't walking well (the tech even carried her out of the truck). Well that jerk did not even care, he said hadn't noticed it, made her walk, said she was fine and if she wasn't by her 2 week follow up appt, then we might x-ray it. When I got home to take her out, I saw another red spot from her spay and remembered he had not answered my question of why she was still bleeding if she was spayed. When I called to take him, they said he was on lunch and would call me back. He did not. I gave him 4 days and called myself to request a diff vet for the follow up. Well 2 days before her appt she died...and if you think your dog might need serious attention, don't go to him. Only Putman and Ditman would I trust with my dog, bc Ditman treated my min pin when she had cancer and explained everything well, and some. Putman actually called me back to answer someo f my questions of my dearl, now passed Leeloo, not Rangel. If it weren't for those 2 careing vets, I would give this review 0 stars bc Rangel sadly represents this clinic as well. Read Less

The doctor who saw my dog yesterday 1-29-09 said he had scabies, she started mentioning how bad it was and to be careful and what nots.. once we mentioned we bought the dog at a pet store in weslaco (morenos pet and feed) she started to studder and taking back some of the diagnoses she found on our dog.. instead of giving us a typed diagnoses on our statement, she hands us a copy of her hand written notes.. which did not add up to her verbal finding on our dog.. we took our dog to another vet.. ended up being our puppy did not have scabies, she had given our dog an uneccisary medication that made our dog unresponsive to his usual highly active self... I would never recommend this vet to any animal lover out there... dr. burgur get ur DIAGNOSES straight before u HARM innocent animals! Read Less
