Houston Cat Hospital

Houston, Texas
General Info
Houston Cat Hospital situated in Houston presents Texas pets and their caregivers with a veterinary experience based on observation that mimics animal exploration settling patterns and change processing methods. When animals arrive they undergo check-in where their responses to scent layers flooring texture eye contact and nearby movement are observed beyond medical examination. When the exam starts clinicians adjust the process using posture signals and handling feedback by slowing or pausing their actions in response to restlessness breath changes or resistance. Examinations encompass intricate assessments of coat density alongside evaluations of hydration levels and muscle composition while testing limb responsiveness together with dental surface conditions and oral heat measurements as well as abdominal flexibility. Homeowners receive invitations to discuss recent household activities where subtle shifts in routines along with vocal patterns and energy dynamics provide guidance for future actions. Houston Cat Hospital provides a range of services including structured diagnostics and immunizations along with pain tracking, aging wellness protocols and collaborative illness mapping. Flexible appointments permit visits that occur in a single step or across multiple days based on the emotional capacity of both the animal and household members. The integration of visual tools such as diagrams tracking calendars and photo logs facilitates communication across visits. Follow-up care isn’t a reminder—it’s a conversation. Check-ins rely on behavioral settling instead of solely timeframes. Pet owners learn to observe their animals' sensory balance alongside activity reintegration following visits where pets show withdrawal or outward behaviors after intense stimulation experiences. Houston Cat Hospital delivers veterinary services throughout Houston and neighboring Texas regions which initiate with awareness while supporting home routines and respecting physical and emotional limits from beginning to end.

Very expensive compared to other vets but otherwise average service. Side note: My cat was taking medication for a heart condition and I had been taking her here for a year or two. Things took a turn for the worse so I asked someone over the phone how much it would be to euthanize because I didn’t want her to suffer. The lady on the phone treated my very rudely and said they were unable to help. I would not recommend this vet based on my experience. Read Less

I was looking for a veterinarian that specializes in cats and had sedation available in case one of our Persians needed it in order to get properly groomed. I submitted a request for appointment online on a Tuesday morning and received a call from the office just a few hours later. I told them about my two Persians (8 year old adopted seniors) and that one had severe matting on his lower back. We arranged to have them dropped off later that evening so that I could meet the vet (dr. Penned is amazing!). They kept in contact throughout the entire process (lab results, other required testing, and pricing) and answered all of my questions. Unfortunately one of our little guys was experiencing congestive heart failure and had to be put down. We were extremely upset by the news but also grateful for Dr. Penner's honesty and transparency about his prognosis and the options available. I was able to spend some precious time with little Jack before he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The entire staff was comforting, supportive, and sympathetic for our loss. We elected to have Jack cremated and received a call a few days later letting us know his remains were ready for us to pick up. Thankfully our other Persian Jethro is in better shape. He got a Lion cut and looks fabulous! Although my first experience with Houston Cat Hospital was bittersweet due to losing Jack, I am very happy with the level of expertise and customer service provided by the amazing staff. Jethro will certainly be visiting Houston Cat Hospital every 6 months from now on. I highly recommend this practice!! I am endlessly grateful to have found them. They are not at all intimidating people and I feel that I can call them up if I have any questions whatsoever. They're patient and do not make assumptions about an owner's knowledge about taking care of a feline family member. They can gauge how much help an owner may need from the conversations they have. Truly an insightful staff! Read Less

First, it smells really good when you walk in and it's quiet.  The front desk personnel are quite wonderful and knowledgeable.  I found myself with a cat that had not been abused, but neglected.  Covered in mats, long hair.  Tried shaving the cat myself and the mats were so thick that the clippers kept turning off.  I called them because they are 1/2 mile from my house and I was distressed about the situation.  The front desk person talked to me for 10 minutes about their process in this situation.  I was able to drop kitty off immediately.  They did a beautiful "lion cut".  She's clean and happy and I picked her up the same day before closing.  The vet came out and talked to me about the cat's health, she's very nice.  I don't know why I would go anywhere else.  No cons.  I can't compare prices because when I need a vet, I need a vet.  I don't feel the charges were out of line for everything they did.  Keeping animals healthy is just as expensive as keeping humans healthy. I took one of my cats here to get her anal glands expressed not knowing that mine would also be expressed once it was time to pay. $215 for an anal gland expression, three little deworming pills, a 7.5 mL bottle of tresaderm, and more than an hour wait! The pills alone were almost $100! Why they decided to charge me for three pills, I have no idea! One would have sufficed until we figured out if her problem really was tapeworms (it's not). The vet/ staff (except for the clinic cats) were not all very personable either, imo. I love my cats and would pay any price to help them feel better but I'm also not naïve and once I feel I have been cheated I will not return. I had a great vet in Dallas who did not force extra shit on his clients. If my cat did have worms, I would have gladly made another trip out to get another pill in her but charging me for THREE pills when she "probably" had worms is so fucking bullshit. Two stars for the clinic cats. I have had two cats for almost 10 years and have gone through several different crises with both. My smaller cat was minutes from death last night and was stabilized at a different location. Surgery was the only option to correct the issue (an obstruction). The price the other location quoted me was astronomical and unfortunately something my husband and I could not cover. However, my cat improved so rapidly overnight that I called the Houston Cat Hospital at 10 AM today (a Saturday) and they told me to bring her right in. The amount of care and concern which my sweet little cat received was amazing. I have never had vets and vet techs who demonstrated such compassion for either of my cats. She pulled through her surgery tonight, and while she is not out of the woods yet, the hardest part is over. I really owe my cat's life to the amazing staff at Houston Cat Hospital and their complete willingness to operate on her on a Saturday evening when the office closed hours before. They didn't give it a second thought. Even if she doesn't make it tonight during post surgery recovery, I am still forever grateful for the compassion they showed to my sweet cat. These ladies truly love what they do and your cats will be in great hands at the Houston Cat Hospital. Read Less

I love the doctors and staff here. They do well with both cats and people! My terror of a cat likes to have her hair cut- but also doesn't like to have her hair cut. She has to be sedated in order to have her hair cut. Once she's out of sedation she usually doesn't want anyone to touch her (Imagine you got dropped off at the doctor, went to sleep and then woke with most of your hair missing. You'd be a bit peeved too.)They take care of her so well! They have never complained about her and always continue to welcome me back. They also caught on to a urinary issue that my cats were having and prescribed food to remedy the issue. So very disappointed in HCH. I took two of my cats in for checkups and vaccinations. They told me one of my cats had 105 degree fever, and recommended blood work and urinalysis so they could treat her properly. I agreed to have those done. However, they sent this cat home with NO treatment - not even fluids - and did not call with results as promised. I had to call and get them myself, and then actually showed up to the clinic to get the results after they did not call me with them. They did not have the urine culture back when promised, so I called several more times over the next week and was NEVER given the courtesy of a return call or the results. I finally disputed the charge with my credit card company, as the service was not fully rendered. $186 test and you can't bother to give results???The vet we saw was young and her inexperience showed. Her bedside manner was very cold, and she clearly ordered extra tests because she wasn't sure how to proceed. She recommended dental cleanings for both cats, but said one would need ,x-rays and possibly a specialty cat dentist to have a tooth pulled. My regular vet extracted the tooth with zero difficulty. He said it was so ready it practically fell out on its own.The kitty that had the 105 fever was taken to our regular vet the next day. Guess what? NO FEVER. They found nothing serious wrong with her, and they were appalled at the multiple tests they ran for no apparent reason. And after reviewing my bill with them, I discovered charges for other services that were not rendered, totaling over $100. Their practice manager did reimburse those, at least. I simply tried them for convenience, add they are close to home. I would never go there again, and certainly cannot recommend them. I kept thinking at some point this whole situation would improve, but it continued to get worse and worse. What a disappointment! Read Less

I moved here from California with my two cats . My baby Mon Petit is 20 years  and four months old. We wound up with Dr. Paddock, simply because she had the opening and the cat and I would like to thank her. He has thyroid issues and renal problems, not atypical for an older cat. Dr Paddock changed the dose of the thyroid medication but also added some medication for the renal issues, not just subcutaneous injections. My cat is doing great!  He still is an older cat so he still can't jump as high as he used to, but he is now walking around the apartment, looking at the birds out the window and cuddling at night. If people think the charges are too high I would disagree. My cat was in ICU for a while. They always took the time to explain to me what was going on and only solicited their opinions when I asked. They originally thought the cat was mistreated by me, rather than a genuine accident, but visiting every day for a couple of weeks, they soon could tell it was an honest accident and their mood towards me improved greatly. This is pretty solid evidence that they genuinely care about their patients and clients. Today I am picking her up, not because she is ready to come home, but because they think she will have a quicker recovery if she wasn't depressed from being away from me. They could have kept her longer and charged more, but they think she will bounce back quicker if she knew I wasn't leaving her there (she hates doctors offices).Read Less

One of my babies started dry heaving about a year and a half ago, and the first time I saw her do it, I freaked out. Like.. I had a cow. I immediately thought of this place because I frequently drive down Westheimer, and my mom and I used to go to DunoBaby next door (when it was owned by different people a couple of years back). Without my family's busy schedule, it took us a while to get her an appointment. When we did, and she was checked out, they showed me x-rays of her chest. The entire time I'm thinking 'Please, not cancer. Please, not cancer!" The vet said it wasn't cancer, and it's been too long for me to remember what exactly it was, but, basically, her lungs were full of stuff that made it hard for her to breathe, causing the dry heaving. They prescribed us some pills for her to take twice a day. Now, my baby is queen of the house. She does what she wants, when she wants, and she doesn't care about the other cats. So.. it was not a pretty site trying to force feed her pills. We eventually decided to grind them up into powder and mix them with some canned cat food. She got smart and stopped eating that after a few weeks. Now we can't even get her to take the pills. It's sad :( The vet said there was nothing she could do. It's not like we can give her shots or anything. Within those few weeks she'd been ingesting the pills, her hacking and coughing had ceased. I was very proud of her! Unforunately, she's pretty much as stubborn as any human can be. I asked the vet if she was in any pain by having this , and she said no, thank goodness. Imagine it's just like having asthma. Hard to breathe. I had a good experience here, and I would definitely be back if one of my other baby's was in trouble. Keep up the good work! And please don't let us down T_T Read Less

My cat was born with a genetic kidney disease. About two weeks ago, I took him to my regular vet because he was throwing up. The vet said it was probably stomach upset, gave us a week's worth of antibiotics for GI problems and sent us on our way. Two Friday nights later, I came home from work to find a lethargic, feverish cat that would not eat or drink. I called my vet on Saturday morning, but that said they were booked solid and could not see my severally ill cat. I called Dr. Smith's office and Ashley said she was booked as well, but they would squeeze us in. Dr. Smith immediately recognized that my poor cat was in pain. She did an x-ray to make sure it wasn't something serious and gave my cat sub-Q fluid in the office so that he would not get dehydrated. She also started him on a two-week course of antibiotics because it turned out he had a kidney infection. I found the entire staff there very professional and I can tell that they all really love cats. All vets over book, but Dr. Smith took the time to find the root of my cat's symptoms, instead of under-diagnosing like the first busy vet had done. And she managed to fit my emergency issue around her busy schedule on Saturday. If you have a cat with a chronic condition like my beloved pet, you can't do better than Dr. Smith. She is caring and knowledgeable, and will go out of her way to provide the best care for your cat. No more all-purpose vets for me! Read Less

Last week I brought a seriously injured kitty to the Houston Cat Hospital for treatment. This cat belonged to my daughter who I was visiting at the time. Some rather tragic circumstances were involved in this case which Dr. Kathleen Smith intuitively grasped. Putting the health and welfare of the cat first, she came up with solutions that were outside the box in order to be both cost effective and offer the finest care possible. Not knowing this doctor prior to this visit, I certainly did not expect this level of dedication and service, but that is exactly what I got. Any other vet would have immediately put this kitty down, but not Dr. Smith. I am extremely impressed with this lady's compassion for animals and cannot offer enough praise for her efforts. Read Less

Brought my cat here a few months ago because of her excessive scratching and scabs that were forming around her neck and ears.  They took a quick look at her,  checked her for fleas, and then diagnosed her with alergies to her Eukanuba food ( which she has been eating since birth).  At this point they suggested I buy a bag of their Science Diet special food for alergies for almost twice of what I pay for her regular food.  After a couple of months of that special food,  conditions were not improving and decided to try another brand ( from the pet store ).  That seemed to have done the trick,  it has been about 4 months now and all the scabs are gone and the excessive scratching is gone.As for my cat's perspective,  I felt they were really rough with her.  my cat has not hissed or growled in her entire life of 8+ years, but 5 minutes in the hands of the DR and the assistant, she was hissing and growling.  Now, I have taken my cat to other vets and have never had this issue. In a way I felt like I was at the car dealer.  You shouldn't leave food around for the cat to eat all the time, you should just feed her once a day.  You should have a flea collar on your cat,  when was the last time she had her shots, you let her ride in the car without a kennel ? ... After leaving I felt like a bad pet owner,  even tho my cat passed her physical with flying colors. Read Less

I have been bringing my cat to Dr. Smith for a few years now. She is very comforting when there is a problem, and is very knowledgeable. I brought my cat in for an operation which I was nervous about. She put me at ease and I felt much better by the time I left. I get the impression that everyone in there (Especially Dr. Smith) cares about your pet and its well being. It is also nice that she specializes in cats. Sometimes there is a delay, but that is more than likely due to emergencies that come up. She did call me one time and asked if I could delay my appt. by one hour because she had so many emergencies that morning. Since I was just in there for an appointment I didn't mind, pets with emergencies should come first. Read Less

This was my best friends one stop shop for health for three years.   He's a (now) 20 year old domesticated feline, black American shorthair, unplanned 1989 recreation of a Bombay by uncontrolled breeding of his black shorthaired mother and Siamese father in Pasadena Texas.   October 1989 he was born, and I have him to this very day in late Feb 2009.  We have known that Homie has had renal failure since a 1999 check up at the Jacinto City Animal Hospital where he had always been treated since his little nut snipping as a one year old.   When bringing Homie to the Houston Cat Hospital they did not insist, as I was trying to, to obtain his entire life records from his only previous vet, and they never could give me a good reason as to why they would not want to have them.    Homie's feline comprehensive profile as performed by them, with blood tests and urine samples sent out to labs that took a few days to report back, were in fact 100% accurate and told me the exact same thing I knew of his kidney condition, which was fully well documented for the first 10 years of his life, which could have been reviewed by pulling his previous records.   I have no complaints with the Houston Cat Hospital, I just wish they had taken my best buddies records more seriously and imported them from the previous and only vet he had before.   And now that his new doctors are at the Texas A&M Small Animal Teaching Hospital in College Station Texas, I have been able to clearly see that the prices at the Houston Cat Hospital are way far above and beyond what can be obtained elsewhere.   They were very extremely accurate in determining the needs and condition of our feline family member, yet their concerns for obtaining all life records seemed lax, and their prices are quite large considering what we have found since.     They can be trusted with your felines health, yes I do believe.   He was treated very kindly by professionals that do in fact demonstrate that they love cats.     I do most certainly suggest them. I wanted my cat to be comfortable so I decided to take him to an exclusive cat hospital for an annual exam. My experience there was a disappointment. As I walked into the clinic there was an awful smell that gave me a headache for about two hours. As I waited in the waiting room there was a technician that was taking clients back and it seemed to me that she was seeing appointments like a doctor. The receptionist (who seemed to be friendly) took me into a room and the doctor and technician came in about 10 minutes later. I was not pleased about the way they were handling my cat. The Dr. just seemed to be too rough with him and he is not a bad cat. I asked to see the boarding facility and it was filthy and some of the cages didn't have litter in the litter pans and the ones that did have litter in them were very dirty! I was not pleased when I left there and would not recommend them to friends or family.Read Less

We had a sceduled appointment for 4 PM. Being this was his first visit with this vet we came 10 minutes early. As soon as we came inside, the front staff demanded that we put our cat (who was wearing a leash and a harness) into a cardboard pet carrier. Understand that we were never told that the pet needed to be inside a carrier and we were the only people with pets in the waiting room. While waiting I went to the front desk to ask a question of the staff while asking the question the phone rang and I was rudely told "just hold on a second". For the next 5 minutes I awkwardly stood there while she casually talked on the phone. Meanwhile the vet staff were going in and out of the office visiting and gossiping with one another and showing absolutely no interest in seeing our cat. We had been waiting for 30 minutes and it seems that now they were going to make time for insurance reps. During the entire time we waited they didnt say if they were busy (our cat was the only patient in the waiting room the entire time we were there), they didnt say that it may take awhile. Once we signed in and stuffed our cat into a small cardboard box (no, he was not happy about that) they made no attempts to comunicate and in fact they ignored when we tried to ask questions. How's the vet there?? We will never know. Read Less

Houston Texas 77042

Vet care is not cheap and they are up front with the charges. If you cannot afford vet care please reconsider adoption.Nice atmosphere and I highly recommend them. Read Less

Very genuine, caring staff. The clinic is clean and nice, the prices are competetive with other vets. However, the staff is what makes this hospital stand out. We drive almost an hour into Houston to see Dr. Smith, when there are plenty of capable vets in Spring, TX. They truly love cats and that is evident in their treatment. If you are looking for a vet that will remember your cats name, give you options and sincerely consider your cat a patient, not just the "next appointment", HCH is the place!Read Less

I can feel the kitty cat love when I take my two tabby babies to see Dr. Smith or Dr. Guengerich. I had never gone to a "cats only" vet and find the difference remarkable. When you enter the facility, it's quiet. There is no loud barking and commotion. It's kitty cat calm, just the way we like it. Also, when the doctors do their examination, they "know" how to handle the cat. My cats detested going to the vet, but now they are calm and relaxed during and after the visit. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less
