There are two parts to this. The first... the visit itself, to address a sick cat, was wonderful. The nurses, the vet, all very nice, caring to my kitty, and competent.
The second part, the two antibiotic prescriptions I received... the nurse simply said, let me go get your medications, and I then paid at the front desk... this seemed reasonable, for the convenience. The two medications added up to about $75, while the visit itself was about $50. Later, I became curious (as one of them was, when looking at the information inside, a generic human medication) and found out that not only do they retail at online pharmacies that sell pet meds for about $15-$20 each, but that the one that is a human medication is available at Walmart, for humans, for $4 (this is the EXACT same medication, with the same NDC code, same manufacturer (Bausch and Lomb) and same packaging.
This means, to me, that the vets themselves could have bought the medications, at RETAIL price, at Kroger down the road (they sell pet meds, it turns out), and still made as much profit on them as the cost of the actual visit... well over a 100% markup. This is ridiculous, and the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars... I know that many people have trouble affording vet visits, and this kind of price gouging is crazy. Offer people the option of filling the prescription elsewhere, or charge reasonable prices. Read Less
