Westbury Animal Hospital

Houston, Texas
General Info
Westbury Animal Hospital in Houston merges proactive health strategies with dedicated care for animals needing general and specialized services. Initial appointments frequently encompass lifestyle evaluations alongside standard laboratory tests and vaccination planning. The clinic performs evaluations on pets to detect early illness indicators including diminished energy levels, movement discomfort, and appetite changes. Through an examination of visible actions combined with contextual backgrounds, the team formulates practical recommendations aimed at averting future major problems. Westbury Animal Hospital offers support for minor surgical interventions alongside dental hygiene issues and chronic condition prescription management. Support exists for the management of skin conditions alongside age-related decline and recurring gastrointestinal trouble. Depending on the condition and available history, diagnostic plans may include referrals for imaging studies or advanced blood tests. Houston's pets and those from nearby Texas neighborhoods display a wide range of health conditions. The clinic’s adaptable scheduling system combined with meticulous recordkeeping supports both individual appointments and ongoing care management. The tracking of slow-progressing conditions becomes smoother with reduced discontinuities through this method. Instead of adhering strictly to predetermined schedules, Westbury Animal Hospital staff modify care based on diagnostic outcomes, home environment alterations, and seasonal factors. Clients receive care instructions that blend clinical recommendations with practical expectations for daily living in Houston. Throughout the entire journey of pet ownership, the clinic stands as a dependable source for health upkeep and reliable expertise.

If you love your dog, DO NOT BOARD HERE! Their boarding department are a bunch of liars and are very careless. I have boarded here for the last 4 years without a complaint, but in February, I don't know if they had a personnel change or what, its been a horror show. I have used them 4 times since then, and each time my dog's health has deteriorated. My dog has a lot of skin allergies and issues, so naturally you would think keeping him in their level 1 care (which is $50 a day), would put your mind to ease that your dog will receive their medication. NOPE the last two times I have given them topical medication, and I have received back full tubes!. This last and final stay, his oral medication wasn't given. I gave them 23 Benadryl pills, I got 23 Benadryl pills back. The response I got was that their technicians signed paper work that medication was given, I have the physical evidence of unused pills that the medication was not given. I paid for a bath, and he looked like he had mange when I picked him up. He had hair and carpet/bedding entwined in his teeth too. WHY WOULD A HOSPITAL LEAVE A DOG IN THIS CONDITION!!! I took him to a new vet immediately and even he said if his topical medication and oral medication was given daily, he would not look like this. All I wanted was an apology that yea we didn't take care of your dog and hopefully they would take steps to correct the issue! After 4 years with an an amazing Vet, Dr. Gaugh, I will never set foot in this place. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE OVERNIGHT WITH YOUR FUR BABIES!! This is not an isolated incident if you read recent reviews, a number of people have had the same experience. Read Less

Warning: We needed to board our injured dog for a weekend. We were told she'd be kept in the medical ward with constant watch and be given the proper medication. When we picked her up we found out she was not given her medication! She wasnt even kept in the medical ward, causing her to get a serious infection and costing us a ton of money in repeat vet visits and medication to fix their mistake! I also dont think they took her out to use the restroom like they said because as soon as we picked her up she pee'd as much as a horse would and pooped twice. All before we even left the parking lot! This place was the worst mistake we've ever made as pet owners. Our fur babies are our children with four legs if i could do it over she would have never been left in their care! Update after reading their response: Wow i am completely shocked that this company would out right lie on my comment. Everything i stated was fact. And i did not receive a 100% refund instead i only received a partial refund! And it was given to me in credit! Making me drive all the way back to argue that and have it put back on my card. But did i forget to mention it took weeks for me to get that refund and instead i was offered dog food instead! This company is a joke. And i am even more disgusted now that the owner would lie! Never once were we told they had concerns, why would they? My dog have stitches in her leg, thats it!! They're supposed to be a veterinary hospital, their only job was to feed walk and give my dog her medicine to stop infection! And they didnt! Also id like to know more about these so called "instruction" that werent followed on my part? I understand a bad review looks bad, but lying really just tips the scale at down right shady. So great job making excuses and trying to put the blame on the person who entrusted you with her baby! I suggest stepping your whole business approach up and even better yourself as person. Oh and ill be contacting your office for the remainder of the boarding fee that you claim to have refunded, shouldnt be a problem right? Haha. Read Less

They helped us get her out of the car and straight into be seen by the vet. We had thought she might have had a stroke but luckily it was something that could be treated and much less severe. Dr. Cole was great at explaining things, gave us choices and understanding. My friend and her dog were displaced by Hurricane Harvey and have been couch surfing ever since. Dr. Koschany at Westbury Animal Hospital is absolutely amazing!! After I had moved back from Boston with my dog, Bentley, I found out that he had a heart murmur and had to be put on medication for the remainder of his life. Dr.Koschany was SO patient with me and there to answer any questions I had about his illness and medications both in person and over the phone. A few months later, we had to put Bentley to sleep, and I couldn't ask for a more kind and gentle person to go through such a hard process with me. Even after Bentley was put to sleep, Dr. Koschany still went out of her way to make sure that this painful process was made easier, and I really appreciated it. At W.A.H you can be sure that you are treated like a person and your animal will receive the best care possible, you are not just a transaction, you and your pet are treated like family - every step of the way. While pricy, this is a fantastic animal hospital. My pets mainly see Dr. Gaugh but have also seen a few of the other veterinarians when she is out, and they all have been fantastic. I feel like they truly care about our pets and have excellent bedside manner. I also like that they have convenient extended hours and extended services (such as X-ray, biopsy, etc) in the sad times when our pets were really sick. My only complaint is that they operate with paper and computer charts - it doesn't seem like they are mainstreamed and they frequently misplace our pets' paper charts. This has only been an issue when our dogs are boarded there and they receive vet care during their boarding - the details of the vet care during boarding were not in the chart at later visits.Last thing, the 4-star rating is not for boarding. I would give that a 1 star! Very pricy, even at the lowest rate. I no longer board my dogs there after the last time when they lost my dog's name tags which were later returned by someone to our house. Really makes me wonder where my dog was when the tags were lost! Read Less

Just left this hospital from having a abscess treated on my pup. I arrived at 9:28 pm and was out by 10:15 pm on a Saturday night. All other 24 hr clinics had a a 2+ hr wait upon calling. The staff was absolutely incredible from the moment I walked in the door. The vet took the time to draw out a diagram of what was going on with my pup and explained the procedure thoroughly, offered pain meds and follows up antibiotics. The initial assessment was $121 but the total was only $232, including everything I needed to go home with, even a cone to keep him from irritating it further. I was extremely pleasantly surprised with their phenomenal service and COMPLETELY REASONABLE prices considering after hr clinics are so pricey (on a holiday weekend no less)! I highly recommend Westbury Animal Hospital as an emergency clinic! Thanks so much for taking such good care of my baby!!! Read Less

I brought my senior dog here for ICU admission after being directly referred by my vet. Although the visit was for unhappy circumstances, the service here was excellent. My dog stayed in their care for close to two days in overnight care. The vets were really good with updating me multiple times a day on my dog's condition and their treatment plan. They also sent me periodic invoices to let me know the financial end of things as well. It was really nice to be able to call any time of day (since they are 24/7) and be able to check on my dog. My only slight complaint would be how long it actually took me to see the vet/vet tech. When picking up my dog from the hospital, it took me around 2.5 hours to actually get him discharged to me - about an hour and a half in a consultation room with my dog waiting to talk to the vet, and another hour to actually get him back after his IV was pulled for discharge. But the ladies at the front desk were extremely helpful - they continued to remind the people in the back that I was waiting. One of the ladies even waited with me until I was all taken care of even though her shift was through - and she was very polite and had a great attitude. I love my current vet so I probably wouldn't come here as a regular - but it will definitely be my go to if I am in need of any vet emergencies in the future. Read Less

Pros: One of the cleanest, prettiest vet clinics I've ever been to. Great facility. I've been super pleased/relieved with their boarding and emergency services. The emergency staff has saved me so much heartache and stress. The support staff (front desk and vet techs) are so kind and personable.Cons: I don't find their prices to be reasonable, but I've only found one budget-conscious clinic in Houston city limits and it's too far out (Mission Bend, for reference). I get it, vet services are expensive, but it's painful for the bank account. What really bugs me about this clinic is that almost every vet I've dealt with seems like they're rushing to their next appointment. The vets are really lacking in bedside manner, and have made me feel pushed into spending more money (i.e., recommending expensive teeth cleanings and blood work when it's just a simple checkup) without actually taking the time to listen to concerns or get to know the pet. That makes me sound like a crazy dog person, but hey...the vet techs get it. The techs are always asking questions with interest and behaving in a friendly and calming manner with my dogs (which makes a difference when they're terrified of the vet). I wish I could say the same about the veterinarians themselves. I've felt uncomfortable with the way the vets have handled my dogs, especially with delicate things like anal gland expressions and nail clippings. As I said, it feels like they are in a hurry, not paying attention, and are devoid of caring.I hate to write a negative review, especially because I've heard such positive things about Dr. Chalkley and Dr. Cooper. However, they must be popular vets for good reason because I have never been able to book an appointment with either!I'm not so sure I will continue using Westbury for regular appointments, but I do highly recommend their boarding and emergency services. Took my dog here on Sunday because he had a large gash on his neck from a dog bite that needed to be stitched up. Even though this vet was far from our house I chose to take him here because of the great reviews I saw on Yelp. There were other emergencies going on when we arrived so we had to wait a while before being seen. We ended up leaving my dog here for a few hours and then I called when we were on the way to pick him up to make sure he was ready to go since we had our baby with us and we wanted to get out as quickly as possible. When we arrived we still had to wait a while for them to bring our dog out after settling our bill. Then the tech realized she forgot one of his meds and so I had to go back and pay for it and wait for her to bring his meds out. The next morning I woke up to my dog covered in blood and bleeding profusely from his leg. I immediately called the vet and was told that he wasn't suppose to go home with the IV catheter in his leg and that I needed to bring him in asap to get it taken care of. Panic mode started to set in because I do not live close to this vet and had to get my baby taken care of first. I was extremely disappointed that my poor dog who had been through so much already had to endure this unnecessary fiasco. Having spent so much money here I felt my dog deserved better attention and care than what he got. I got a call from one of the owners who wanted to apologize for the incident. I was given a box of heart worm medicine and nausea medicine to make up for what happened. Read Less

I have been coming here for about two years and have been meaning to write a review. I cannot believe that I found such an amazing vet. He takes the time to listen to your concerns and really helps you understand what is going on and involves you in ever step of the care and treatment of your pet.On top of that he is beyond patient... I am over protective of my dog and bug him all the time over the phone and in person with the littlest things and he takes such good care of us. When our puppy got fixed she had to spend one night away from us and that was so hard for me because of how attached I am to her. When we came to pick her up the next day the staff carried her out and she looked like she did not have a care in the world. I called Westbury vet at 5 AM and got an appointment that morning with a great vet.  Subsequently, we brought our newest puppy to the vet for vaccinations.  When the little ball of energy that we call Lil Girl (the youngest of our lot) decided that the window should not be an impediment to her desire to go outside, we called and our vet was available to stitch her up that Sunday morning.  The vet takes the time to get to know us and our furry family and is sensitive to our pet's needs as well as our philosophy regarding pet care, giving us the pros and cons of her recommendations and telling us what makes sense. The place is always neat, clean and doesn't smell scary to me or my fur kids.  I am happy that I have found Westbury Animal Hospital... for our day to day needs, as well as when unfortunate things happen. I had a horrible experience with the management staff at this hospital. I sent in my resume months ago and after speaking to their personnel, I was told that they did not like my schedule because I work full time fri-sun at my current job, and I was looking for a second. Months later, I get an email saying they are interested in me for a lesser position, which I entertained. So i do a phone interview and the lady tells me that she was interested in hiring me and that an HR person will email me a personality test and we would go from there. 6 days go by, so I call to inquire about it. The HR lady tells me they didn't email me because all staff are required to work weekends. I don't understand this.... EVERY person that works there works weekends?! thats absurd and definitely false, because when I called on a Sunday, the person I was looking for wasn't there! Aside from that... wasn't that the entire reason for telling me you would keep my resume? To possibly hire me when a position arises that accommodates my schedule? Absolutely ridiculous and a waste of time! I am not going to quit my job that I love just so you can have me work weekends. I have been working weekends for 7 years, and I've never had a problem working during the week at other hospitals. I am a well seasoned veterinary technician, and I found it very disrespectful the way they treated me and lead me on with false information. This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. Never will I ever recommend this hospital to anyone for services or a job.The only reason they got one star from me is because that is the minimum, otherwise they would have gotten nothing at all. I have been taking both of my dogs, Baby and Sissy to Dr. Betzen for a few years now. He is extremely caring and thoughtful. My dogs are older and and need special care which he and his staff always give. Last week we had the difficult decision to make about Sissy, Dr Betzen was so compassionate during this time and we truly appreciated it. We were given as much time as we needed to make that decision.  Our dogs are family so the care she received on the day was comforting to us. Read Less

This review is for CAT owners only! If you are a dog owner I would expect you to have a much different experience. The reason I am giving two stars does not have to do with the vet or the vet assistants. The vet I saw was very nice and the assistants were nice as well. There was one lady at the front desk who was a little cold, but I know they are open 24/7 so I will give her the benefit of working late the night before. Anyways, taking cats to the vet is always slightly traumatic for them, because they are not used to leaving the house and being in a carrier, etc. However, I was very disappointed when I came into this clinic and there was not a designated cat area. According to my mom there used to be, and I did see a cat lamp on one side and a dog lamp on the other, but dogs were on both sides and the front desk lady told us that there were no longer designated sides. This situation is made much worse by the fact that this is a huge clinic. At cat/dog vets in the past, I really had no problem with the other dogs being there because for one we were separated and usually there was a makeshift wall between, and secondly in a smaller clinic I would only see 2-3 dogs while I was there. At westbury animal clinic I counted 11 dogs coming in and out while I was there. They all barked at each other which bounced off the tile walls and not being able to sit away from all the dogs barking at each other, completely freaked my cats out. They were shaking the whole time we were there, and it was very stressful for me to see them like that. Even when we got to the room they were unable to relax, because you could hear all the barking from the waiting room. This whole situation made me wonder if there were cat only vets out there. It may be traumatic to go to the vet, but at least once they get there I would like to reduce their stress as much as possible. I am very happy that I found out there are many cat only vets in Houston. It seems silly to me to take a cat to a dog/cat vet if there are cat only places out there, so this is what I intend to do next time. I am sure that the emergency care here is great and it is a very nice facility, but the whole time I was in there I didn't see a single other cat come through. It seems to really just cater to dogs, so if you are a cat owner with sensitive cats like mine, I would think twice before coming here. Read Less

This place doesn't care about your pet, they only want your money. My dog tore his knee ligament and was limping. They scheduled him for a 'traditional suture' surgery one week later for $4000. No xray even taken. Seemed suspicious to me. I did some internet research and most of it says you should not do that surgery if your dog is more than 40 pounds. I called back and their vet admitted another surgery option was better for my dog and that this surgery wouldn't probably work because of his weight. I asked why they even offered or scheduled a $4000 surgery if their own doctor doesn't recommend the procedure and they said they don't offer the other surgery (TPLO), so that is why. What? Basically tried to get me to pay $4000 for a knee surgery that their own doctor said he wouldnt recommend. A vet clinic who is in it JUST FOR THE MONEY. I am so glad I did my research and didn't just trust them. I will never go back. Go see Dr. Matt at Beechnut animal clinic instead. He gave me the right surgery for half the price. Read Less

My fiance and I took our fur baby in for the first time and we were both amazed at the general awe of this place. The only negative experience was the snobbish woman at the reception desk when we first came in, she was kind of rude and clearly didn't like the staff members that were coming to get patients. She was the only negative though. The girl that took us to the room, Tiffany I think, was really nice, seemed truly interested in our boy, and put me totally at ease with the hospital after the first girl gave me doubts, and it was clear that she loves her job. She was really gentle with him while still being firm while the doctor was examining him, even when he was trying to jump off the table. We saw Dr.Gaugh and she was very respectful and great with our baby. Dr Gaugh also didn't have a problem admitting that she wasn't sure and bringing in one of the more seasoned vets. We were very pleased with everyone we came in contact with, except the first lady, and we will definitely be returning. Thank you Westbury for taking such great care of us and our baby. Read Less

If you're looking for a veterinary hospital that is a notch above the rest, then look no further than the Westbury Animal Hospital. They were recommended to me by a friend whose dog's life was saved by them and I've been a loyal customer ever since. This is an AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) hospital which means the vets have to continue their education yearly and they keep up with new trends so they're not stuck in the dark ages like so many vets who still think yearly vaccinations are the way to go. AAHA vets follow the AAHA vaccination guidelines (i.e. core vaccines given once every three years). So not only are the vets knowledgeable and experienced, but even the supporting staff is wonderful. The experience is top notch from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave. It does not smell like a vet clinic and is very clean. They even have refrigerated bottled water and cookies out for the humans. They take a photo of your dog and put it on his receipt which is a nice touch. And unlike many other vet clinics/hospitals they want to know what kind of food your dog is eating. We usually see Dr. Flores and she's very nice and makes our dog feel at ease. I highly recommend Westbury Animal Hospital. They are a bit more expensive but they're worth it. Read Less

My first impression of this office was good. However when I brought my hound in for treatment of a hot spot and a bad toe, Dr. Chalkley helped him with his hot spot and cut back his toe nail and said the nail probably did not hurt him but that it probably has a tumor and should be removed. For this visit he prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine for his hips and charged $750.00. Later I asked how much to remove the toe, he said it would be $750.00. More recently we brought our cat in for an abcess on her neck, she was pretty sick, guess what, another $750.00 This morning I found my dog dead in our living room, he must have had more wrong than I new, he got sick in the night, I feel terrible because I did'nt take him in because were low on cash and credit. When I first called because my cat is ill, the lady who answered the phone at night was superb! She was friendly and caring and answered my concerns. I loved the customer service! I came in at the break of dawn to drop off my cat and the lady at that time, also, was amazingly courteous and helpful! Then I got the phone call from my doctor. He explained to me what was going on with my cat, which was great. But due to the costs I didn't think I could afford at the time, I tried to discuss alternatives with him that maybe I can do at home. I felt like he was pretty pushy about me doing it the way he wanted it done. Almost like I didn't have a choice in the matter. I was very uncomfortable. I called back a few minutes later to ask a question and the receptionist, (a different lady, by now), was not knowledgeable about what was going on in the clinic, it seemed. And to top it off, when I came to pick up my cat, I had barely walked in the door and I could already feel her unfriendliness! She didn't even say hi or can I help you! She just stared, then said ""yes?"". No smile, no good customer service... nothing. The doctor met me and again, I found him pushy about his way. Also, he was obviously in a rush, and it intimidated me from asking him any questions. He didn't even glance down at my poor cat, except to show me how to administer his medication and fluid! When he was done explaining the procedure, he didn't even look me in the eye or shake my hand or anything! No formal good-bye that you would expect with that setting. Anyway, just wanted to share my experience. Read Less

I got my first dog when I was 6 and we used Westbury Animal Hospital. Now it is 46 years later and we have been through 8 dogs, many emergencies, great times as we get new dogs (usually from the SPCA), and sad times as older ones had to be put down, even adopting one that had been abandoned at the clinic. The vets have always become like family to us. The vets are leaders in vet medicine and always have the pet's best interest as their goal at all times. Dr. J has been our ""family vet"" since the first owner retired, and he and Dr. E and the rest of the staff care for our dogs as much as we do, and we are hard to beat! We have recommended ""our"" vet clinic to many friends over the years, and will continue to do so.

Haha. Read Less

I highly, highly recommend Westbury Animal Hospital & Dr. Koschany!!! Read Less

Dr. Cooper treats my teacup Yorkie and she is never scared of coming to the vet. They made me feel very comfortable because they paid so much attention to her. I like this place because they actually care. I had been bringing my dogs to a country vet for all of their lives.  I moved, she shut down her  operations... it was time to choose a new vet.  My oldest dog, a lab, had trouble walking, standing, etc... I was referred here from another vet for my cat who has cancer. Its a hard to treat cancer and its removal does not guarantee anything. They were very clear on the facts and while we are not guaranteed our cat will never have this come back they spared her leg and made her as comfortable as possible. So far shes healing up with no issues and going on about life unhindered by the tumors presents. They were very good on the surgical consult and stayed within their quoted perimeters to us. I feel being able to communicate and understanding whats being communicated is very important when dealing with our own and our animals health. So if you are unsure of something do not fear asking questions and for all that is good, google the meanings of things.

I can see my doctor for hundreds less than it costs to take your pets to this money factory. Find another vets office that is more compassionate and not so mercenary. Steve Moore Read Less

I have a cat that has had a history of health problems and has been given many different diagnosis and has been on many different medications. I just moved to Houston and did not have a local Vet but after reading an article in the Chronicle about Dr. Cooper at Westbury Animal Clinic having saved a homeless dogs life, I decided to take my cat to him. I was very pleasantly surprised at the very thorough examination and care he gave her. I had never seen a Vet take so much time with her and ask me so many questions. Because of his thorough exam I FINALLY got a CORRECT diagnosis, my cat is now finally doing fine! Read Less

If you want your pet cared for by people who will love it as much as you do, this is the place to come. Read Less
