I think the only thing holding this animal hospital back are the lack of open hours. Called to make an appointment Friday and couldn't get in until Monday because they're closed on Sundays. The staff were very friendly and called back right away to fix an over billing error. The doctor, while probably a little rusty with exotic pets went it came to my pet rat, was very knowledgeable and friendly. He explained everything in detail and what needed to be done over the next weeks. Prices are a little steep compared to my previous animal hospital in St Louis but I don't feel robbed either. Without a doubt the best doctors and staff to ever care for my boy Rocko. For nearly 10 years Valley Animal Hospital kept Rocko healthy and alive. And when it was time to send my boy to the big dog park in the sky (his quality of life rapidly deteriorated since January because of diabetes) the doctor and staff were comforting and ensured Rocko passed away as calmly as possible. There will never be another Rocko but when the time comes for my family to get a another four legged family member I will trust no other hospital. I came in today.  My usual animal hospital doesn't have a guinea pig doctor that works every day, so they scheduled me for two days from now.  Except, guinea pigs can get serious complications pretty quickly, so I worried like crazy and continued to look for another doctor that could see my little one sooner.  Luckily, this place was able to give me a same day appointment, within a few hours from when I called.  I was amazed and truly thankful.  The doctor said that, sure enough, bringing in my little guy as soon as possible was the best decision I could have made and treatment should be more effective because of it.  Service was impeccable, and I loved how both my pet and I were treated with great attention and a high level of care.  The staff's diplomas line the waiting area and they truly seem extremely knowledgeable.  I will probably switch over to this place and become a regular, for check ups, emergencies, and such.  Oh, and the prices were also very reasonable.  The bill for his check up (priced under "exotic animals"), his diagnostic drops, and his medicine was under $100.Update: I took him back for a check up a week later. They gave me a courtesy call a little while after that (one or two weeks) to check up on him. It truly showed that they cared.Update: Their exotic animals doctor wasn't working this past Sat (don't know if that's a regular thing), and they were completely booked and unable to take walk-ins; however, they were awesome and referred me to a place that could. We adopted our new member of our family at the local pet shelter but didn't really know the best place to take him to get his checkup and surgery. We chose Valley Animal Hospital because its very close to us. We received excellent care and information from our vet. She answered all our questions and concerns. The doctors and staff always give my pets the best care possible. I have been going there for more than 20 yrs and I wouldn't trust anyone else to take care of my babies. They have laser therapy which my 10 year old lab has been getting to help with arthritis pain and i am so happy he is moving around alot easier these days. Thank you guys for being the best! I took my pet to this place recently, and I must admit I was nervous. Initially I was given a bill of almost $200 but soon they found out I wasn't willing to give 3/4 of my pay check to them, so the doctor was very nice checked my dog and soon everything was resolved for almost $90. I was given a "puppy pack," which was GREAT! it included: food, measuring cups, and a book to keep track of my puppy as she grows. Though I had a bad experience at the beginning this place was great and they did seem interested in truly helping me and my puppy. Read Less

Dr. MacManus is the most caring vet I have been to. He is great with animals and is great about keeping the owners informed of the animals care when they are hospitalized. Even on weekends and holidays he called us twice a day to give us updates on our dog when he was sick. Only drawback is he is located in Pharr, rather than McAllen. Despite his location we pass about 10 other vet clinics to take them to him. I have not had much experience with his partner Dr. Ruiz, so cannot really give an opinion either way on her work. We just always ask for Dr. MacManus. Read Less
