Paws and Claws Animal Hospital

Plano, Texas
General Info
Voted..Best Vet in Dallas, North Texas, and Plano by local pet owners!Outstanding Client SatisfactionIF...You are Ready to Say No to Unnecessary Use of Medications, Chemicals, and Vaccines, and Ready to Say Yes to Improving the health of Your Pet, We Invite You to Call Us and Become a Member of our Family! We are excited to be the only hospital in North Texas offering complete natural medicine for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and small animals. While we do offer conventional therapies such as conventional medications and surgery (using our unique holistic anesthetic approach,) we excel in many natural therapies including herbs, homeopathics, acupuncture, and cold laser.Affordable care-No matter how good the care, if you can't afford it your pet can't benefit. We have a wide range of clients, from those who are minimum wage employees all the way to to those who are multimillionaires. We can craft a treatment plan for your pet based upon your budget. We want to help all of our patients, so we welcome your input into the plan that is best for your pet and your wallet!I'm often asked..."Dr. Shawn, what is your specialty? What makes your hospital different?"Legally I can't call my self a specialist (even though my clients and many of my colleagues consider what I do a specialty) since there is no board-certification program for holistic, naturopathic, and functional medicine. However, I can answer that question. Our "specialty" involves 2 things:We are the only hospital in North Texas offering Functional Medicine for all pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and small mammals.) Functional medicine focuses on the function of the patient’s cells, using and individualized approach to promote health and return sick patients to healthy as quickly as possible. The practices of functional medicine are useful both for healthy patients (to improve their health) as well as for those suffering from illness, especially chronic illness, to return them to health.Functional medicine uses diet, supplements, herbs, and homeopathics to improve the health of cells in order to facilitate healing. By reviewing a history of the pet’s lifestyle, prior diseases, and diet, we carefully fine-tune our recommendations rather than recommending the same health plan or treatment regimen for every patient.Second, we offer help when other doctors can no longer help your pet. While we prefer to see pets when they are healthy (and keep them that way,) or see your pet at the beginning stages of illness, we know that not everyone finds up at these stages. Many of our patients are considered "hopeless" by conventional doctors, who often refer these pets to us for a "last hope at treatment." While we can never make guarantees, we have helped (and yes, even cured and saved) many of these "hopeless" cases. We have many success stories of pets for whom conventional medicine offered no help, but by offering integrative care these pets lived many months or even years beyond their expected prognosis. We love helping these pets, knowing that many patients are saved when we work with them to effect a successful treatment or cure. Here are a few of the many positive reviews we receive from our clients...The only truly holistic vet in town, Dr. Messonnier runs this hospital in Plano. With an aging and ailing cat who is a faithful patient at Rutherford Vet Hospital in Fair Park, I was looking for a holistic approach to compliment the traditional care Rutherford provides him. Dr. Messonnier's care for George (my old man kitty cat) was perfect. Knowing that I wasn't leaving Rutherford, but rather looking for an extension of care, Dr. M prescribed George supplements to help with his chronic digestive issues. We instantly saw an improvement in George's day-to-day health and happiness.Gina H.Dr. Shawn has completely blown me away with his sincerity and care for my Zoe. As a 1st time Pup Mom to a now 3 month old Yorkie Terrier, I have had tons of questions and Dr. Shawn has always been quick to respond to me via email, since I haven’t been able to come in the office yet. Someone so passionate and knowledgeable is rare. I’m impressed that he isn’t more concerned about making money off of you rather than truly helping you the best way he can. Thanks Dr. Shawn!Stephanie J.Dr. Shawn Messonnier and his staff have been treating my 2 dachshunds for over 6 years now. I chose Paws & Claws Animal Hospital specifically for their holistic approach to veterinary care. I’m thrilled that they offer blood titers, which reduced the amount of vaccines my boys receive each year. I also appreciate the fact that I am offered both holistic and conventional therapies by Dr. Messonnier. We’ve dealt with issues from back injuries to allergies and have used holistic and conventional medicines to treat them. Dr. Messonnier spends a great deal of time with me on each visit making sure that I understand his treatment plan and am able to voice concerns or ask questions. His staff is always courteous and compassionate. I am a very happy customer!Brighid B.Wonderful caring doctor. Went thru 4 vets before I found him and my dogs have been seeing him for 7 years now. One of my dogs had been dealing with cancer and Dr. Shawn and his entire staff have been wonderful. He even gave me his cell and house number to call on the weekends if there were problems. I love his staff and they are very nice.Linda T.Dr. Shawn is awesome! ! I got my 2 dogs right before the pet food scare where pets where dying from dry dog food. I then started researching the benefits of raw and reading a lot more about how to care for my dog in the best way possible. I ordered many books about holistic ways for dogs and didn’t even realize I had one of Dr. Shawn's books! I moved back to Texas where I have always lived with other dogs and went to many different vets for my dogs I had prior to my 2 new ones. I was very blessed to have found Dr. Shawn. He focuses on preventative care for your dogs and he is always continuing his education on medicine and holistic therapies. I am a pain in the butt client and Dr. Shawn is always willing to call me up and talk to me about things. If you care about your pets, do the research and take your pet to Dr. Shawn to give your pet the best care possible that he knows how to do.Christine K.These comments make me very happy, as the confirm my decision 25 years ago when I started our hospital. I had 2 simple goals-provide the best care for pets in North Texas, using the most natural and holistic approach possible, and to invite clients to become part of our family and get personalized care. Because we only see a few patients each day, you and your pet are never a number but are real and special individuals. We strive to meet all of your needs and welcome you anytime you need our help.Paws & Claws Animal Hospital and Holistic Pet Center is the only fully integrative holistic pet hospital offering natural care for pets in the North Texas area. Open since 1991, we offer natural therapies for our patients that fit with our health care goals: say “NO” to drugs except when absolutely necessary, work to “heal” the sick pet rather than make it simply feel better by masking its symptoms with strong medications, and focus on true health the way nature intended. We focus on diet and supplements (many made specifically for our hospital) including herbs and homeopathics, and offer physical therapies such as electroacupuncture and cold laser therapy. Pets are rarely vaccinated (we use blood titer testing to determine if pets need vaccines) and rarely receive chemical flea and tick preventive medications, resulting in improved health and life expectancy. We are the only hospital in the area to offer blood testing for early diagnosis of cancer in healthy pets.We focus on anti-aging medicine and also offer holistic anesthesia. Clients of our older patients love these 2 services as we can help our mature patients live longer and healthier lives and perform anesthesia and surgery safely without the fear that often accompanies anesthesia of "older pets."So what makes our approach, that we call holistic anesthesia, unique and even safer?1.We select the best and safest anesthetic to fit your pet’s unique health. Unlike many doctors who use the same anesthesia for just about every case, we choose the best anesthetic to meet your pet’s need at the time anesthesia or sedation is needed. We make our choice based upon the pre-anesthetic evaluation, which could include a thorough examination, laboratory testing, presence or absence of disease, age, prior anesthetic experiences, patient history, and elctrocardiogram.2.We are not afraid of anesthesia. So often we hear that another doctor refuses anesthesia because the pet is “too old” or “too sick.” No pet is too old for proper pet care, including properly chosen anesthesia. We are happy to help these “higher risk” cases who also need the best health care.3.For most procedures, such as dental cleanings and the removal of small tumors, deep anesthesia is not needed and not given. We give just enough anesthesia/sedation to keep your pet quite, restful, and pain-free during the procedure. The pet than awakens fully aware of its surroundings and is discharged shortly following the procedure so it can go home and resume its normal daily activities.4.Proper monitoring is important. I know many doctors do not monitor their patients while under anesthesia. This is malpractice and will eventually result in an unnecessary death of a patient. At our hospital your pet is monitored from the time it enters the hospital until it is discharged. During surgery the pet is monitored by the doctor, two assistants, and modern monitoring equipment to allow early detection of any problems that might occur (problems rarely occur during our holistic anesthesia.)5.Because many surgeries can cause pain, we use multimodal analgesia(pain-killing) techniques. Using several drugs and even natural therapies allows your pet to experience surgery free of pain; this technique also allows lower doses of anesthetics, making anesthesia even safer! If you are ready to experience true health the way nature intended, and want to minimize the use of conventional medications for your pets, we invite you to join our family.Since traditional medicine alone doesn't heal, but only makes the pet feel better, we integrate many different therapies to treat the whole pet, not just the disease.A large number of our patients have seen 1 or more doctors for help before finding us. Often these pets have been taking numerous medications for months or years with no real healing. In many cases it seems like it's more about making money than healing the pet.Our typical client...Loves her pet!Is focused on healthPrefers to eat healthy, including organic foodPrefers natural medicines for her family, including her petsThinks of her pets as her children and demands excellent care for them and all family membersWants to prevent disease rather than treat diseasePrefers to say "No" to drugs whenever possible, and understands that too many drugs and toxins cause illnessWants to spend time with the doctor to explore treatment options and have her questions answered (most veterinarians spend 5-10 minutes per visit, whereas our typical visit is 30 minutes long)Appreciates our respect for her pet health budget and works with us to formulate the best treatment plan that falls within her budgetWe offer integrative care for all pets, including birds, small mammals, and reptiles. We are known for helping pets with numerous medical disorders including diseases of the gastrointestinal system, urogenital system, musculoskeletal system, and nervous system. We offer non-surgical natural therapy for pets with disk disease and hip and cruciate ligament injuries. We are proud to offer integrative therapies for pets with all varieties of skin diseases and cancers. Our appointments are usually scheduled for 30 minutes (the typical veterinary visit is 10-15minutes.) We don't rush your visit and know it takes time to truly understand your needs and your pet's health issues. By taking extra time with your pet we often find problems other doctors miss and can recommend the best course of action to help your pet feel great again soon and minimize future medical problems (and costs!)Currently we are the only integrative pet hospital in North Texas offering all of the following natural therapies:HomeopathyWestern Herbal MedicineChinese Herbal MedicineHomotoxicologyClass 3 Laser TherapyAutosanguis Therapy-a powerful system of homeopathic detoxification that works well for pets with chronic illnesses and serious health problems such as cancer.Autologous Blood Stem Cell Therapy-We are the only veterinary facility in the area to use this natural healing system which relies on stem cells harvested from a small amount of your pet's blood. This is another therapy which works well for pets with chronic illnesses and serious health problems such as cancer.Cold Laser TherapyAcupunctureBiotherapeutic Analysis Blood and Urine Testing-These 2 tests will help us determine subtle changes in various biochemical parameters in your pet's blood and urine. The results will guide us to choose the correct supplements to correct the problems before they become serious and your pet develops chronic illness.Endocrine/Hormone/Immune Testing-A simple blood test which tells a lot about the status or your pet's endocrine/hormone levels and easily measures 3 different classes of antibodies to detect hidden problems in your pet's immune system.Food Hypersensitivity Testing-What is the best food to feed your pet? This test answers that question and guides you to feed your pet the diet most likely to contribute to many years of good health.Blood testing for cancer diagnosis in healthy pets.We offer care that is both high tech and high touch, the way medicine used to be, the way it should be. We look forward to welcoming you to our family!Top 10 Reasons To Choose Natural, Holistic Pet Care10) Hundreds Of Years Of Clinical Experience 9) Based On Scientific Framework vs. Conjecture8) More Cost-Effective 7) Avoid Unnecessary Drugs & Vaccinations6) Works With The Body Safely & Gently 5) Treats The Underlying Disease vs. Covering Up Symptoms-Allows true healing.4) Ability To Treat Undiagnosed & Functional Diseases3) Nothing Else Is Working2) No Drug Reactions Or Side-Effects1) It Works! Our special interests include preventive care using natural therapies, the treatment of diseases with minimal use of conventional medications, holistic anesthesia of older pets, caring fro cats and dogs (we recognize that cats are unique and are not small dogs,) and the treatment of exotic pets such as birds, small mammals, and reptiles. While medical care for certain problems can be expensive at times, we welcome the opportunity to work with our clients to put together a treatment plan that fits their budget. 6 months ago my sweet 5 year old golden retriever had her normal bi-annual checkup done and with that comes a full blood workup. She was always perfectly normal on all her levels until that day. Her liver and kidney enzymes were highly elevated!! Scary news, but as to not panic Dr Messonnier put her on 3 herbal all natural remedies to start immediately and thought it best we do an ultrasound and x-rays. I chose to do all of the above and her liver was swollen but it was recommended to check blood every 3 months and ultrasound every 6 months. HAPPY to report that 6 months later, all of her blood levels are now normal and her ultrasound was clean. WE DID ALL OF THIS NATURALLY AND WITHOUT DRUGS! Thank you Dr. M! Read Less

I took my Shiloh Shepherd in to see Dr. Shawn.  She had a torn ACL and had been in a brace for 6 months and was starting to regress and I was looking for options to avoid surgery.  Dr. Shawn gave her a treatment plan including Laser Therapy and some herbal supplements.  I wondered if Cold Laser Therapy really works. People get it done, and you wonder if its just the mental process that it works, but a dog has no idea what you are doing.  Either it works or it doesn't. My girl is now walking without a brace, without a limp and even jumping on the bed again.  So for that I would have given 5 stars. I had to reduce the star amounts because I only see the doctor 1 time on my MANY visits.  His staff always s took care of her, and I was told if I wanted to consult with him, I would be charged... and that leads me to the second star being taken away.... the cost.  Outrageous amount of money and I was unable to continue or plan. It was just too expensive.  Which makes me very sad.  I think if he would reduce his prices, he would have more clientele and be able to help more animals in need.  Isn't that what being a vet is about??? Where do I begin a little about my dog Trucco he is a 9 yr old Border Collie that has skin problems, I have tried just about everything except for holistic treatment so I ran across veterinarian in a magazine speaking very highly of what they were capable of doing so I figure maybe just maybe there might be hope. The first visit starting with scrapping skin test, blood work and medicine that cost $500 usd then as days went by Trucco was not getting better more medicine and antibiotics was not getting better The Dr. Ordered byopsy test came back negative for cancer what a relief $1000 usd . I was desperate to get him better so I found de Dermatologist Clinic they ran a test and found an auto-immune desorder started him on steroid and immune suppressor medicine after three days my puppy was getting better and his hair came back. I spent almost $3.000 usd and the Dr. Messonnier than had no answers to anything. I guess the moral of this story is Dr Shawn Messonnier is very misleading and very costly and all about your hard earned money , not to mention my dog almost Died. . Read Less

I wish I had come here to Yelp first before jumping on the Dr. Shawn "holistic" train.  Seriously do yourself a favor and don't even step foot in this practice.  He is double the price for an office visit of any other vet in town. He doesn't include simple things in that office visit that other vets do.  He doesn't adhere to the estimate that is put before you to approve.  Even if you mark things off - he will find a way to send in his office manager to get you to do them.  If you do go review your receipt very carefully before you leave and compare it to your estimate.  I got home and found 2 charges that I did not approve nor did I approve any misc. charges.  It's a money making business for sure.  It's really kind of sad b/c the area needs a good holistic, honest veterinarian.  Worst mistake I've made with my pet was going here.  When you see this many bad reviews that is a bad sign and I wish that I had read Yelp first.  BEWARE Read Less

In Sept, my kitty stopped eating. Over the weekend, she'd lost about a pound. Being an advocate of natural medicine, I researched naturopathic/holistic vets in the area. Dr. Messonnier€s name popped up. I read the reviews. They seemed mixed, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and checked out his website. His website looked promising, so I decided to take my kitty in to see him that Monday morning. She was really bad at that point. She could hardly walk. I was afraid she could die at any moment. When the doctor finally came into the exam room (my appt was 30 mins prior to this), the first thing he told me was that he was really busy and had 3 emergencies, so we needed to hurry up. I thought to myself, €Uh, ok, but my cat ALSO has an EMERGENCY.€ I said €okay€ and told him what was going on as quickly as possible. He then wanted me to bring her out of her carrier. I tried to coax her and lift her up a bit, which always works, but she was so utterly exhausted that she just laid there unwilling to budge. After one or two literal seconds, I divulged she didn€t want to come out. I continued to try to get her out, but instead of waiting perhaps one more second for me to open the top or pick her up, he proceeded to lift the opposite end of her carrier and make her fall out to face plant onto the table. Frantic, I put my hand under her ribs just in time to catch her. I couldn€t believe he just did that. He was in a hurry, and she wasn€t hurt (because I caught her), so I let it slide. He asked if she was always that small. I told him she was a naturally petite cat, but she€d lost about a pound. That was all he did to €examine€ her. He said she would have to stay for at least until the end of the day, and he€d have someone write up a treatment plan. He left the room. I only saw him for maybe 5 mins. About 15 mins later, a lady came in with a plan totaling about $1200. It was extremely thorough, excessively so, containing everything from an EKG to probable medications. She left me to look it over. My fiancé showed up and entered the room. We discussed in privacy for about 15 mins before we decided to leave. It wasn€t the money. I would spend whatever it took to take care of my baby. We left because of the doctor€s curt, callous demeanor. His insensitivity was unacceptable. Veterinarians who lack compassion lack the ability to properly care for animals. My fiancé also reminded me that the facilities were inadequate and lacking. The doctor told me blood work would not come back until the next morning. He sends away for blood work which wastes time. Who knows what else he doesn€t do himself. So, for an entire 24 hrs, we wouldn't even have a basic health assessment. She could die before then. On top of that, the place seemed to be an overly stressful environment. We were definitely leaving. After $79 later (our 5 min exam fee), we took her to her old vet. They use conventional medicine, but saw her right away. They said she was severely dehydrated and hooked her up to IV therapy immediately. Blood work was done in house and came back within minutes. It was really bad. BUN was at 172, Creatinine 14.3, Glucose 202, etc. I told them I did not want to use drugs on my kitty, and they willingly complied. After a week of hospitalization on IV therapy and a few gentle E-tube feedings, she was a happy cat, eating on her own. No drugs used, and she was excellently cared for by people we€d trusted for years. It€s a shame there aren't many other holistic vets around. There is no regulation for them at this point. Dr. Messonnier is a self-proclaimed holistic vet. I believe his intentions are good, but I can€t trust him. My veterinarians were willing to work with me and my natural medicine requests. They gave her a b12 injection into her IV to increase her appetite, gave her a heating pad to keep her warm, gave her a vitamin supplement every day, and allowed me to provide her preferred water, food, and litter. I would suggest you ask your trusted vet about natural alternatives that they can provide before taking your pet to see Dr. Messonnier. Read Less

We recently had to bring our 15 year old Italian Greyhound Tucker to Dr. Shawn.  It was our first visit since we have moved to Plano from the West Coast.  We actually didn't initially come to Paws and Claws because of the reviews, but after giving it a lot of thought, we did and it was the best decision we have made for him. After adopting Tucker 8 years ago, we discovered he has severe allergies for just about everything.  You name it, he's allergic to it.  Our last holistic vet tried to treat his allergies, but those natural treatments did not work.  A steady low dosage of a steroid medication did, which he as been on since. Last year he almost died from Pancreatitis, and we think the steroid had a lot to do with that.  We wanted to give him a more natural solution, and weaned off the steroid. Tucker was suffering greatly from nasal allergies.  We brought him in.  Had a wonderful consultation with Dr. Shawn, blood was drawn along with urine and nasal samples and we walked out with some natural remedies.Unlike the last time, we started noticing Tucker improving within the first week or so.  We brought him back in for some treatments based on his lab reports, and added more supplements to combat his various issues, including strep.  Low and behold his allergies have all but vanished.  He is way more bright eyed and energetic for his age, and every factor is a plus.  He loves his supplements, even the ones we don't include mixed in his raw diet.  We did not see these results with our last holistic vet.  I am amazed and thrilled that the supplements are working wonderfully. Is it cheap, no.  Is it worth it, YES.  Worth every penny. We are so thrilled with the treatments, service, attention to our budget and more.  We highly recommend Dr. Shawn and the wonderful team at Paws and Claws.....and so does Tucker, but he can't type so you'll have to take our word for it. My experience with Dr. Messonnier was great. I took my 8 month old Beagle to a vet we had been using for 16 years for a growths on and in his mouth. She removed them had it diagnosed and said it could come back. Well they did and many growth like warts were in his mouth. Took him back to the same vet and nothing was prescribed however my little boy was diagnosed with Papilloma warts. Well I decided to take him to Dr Messonnier and he crushed the warts that he could could crush and prescribed some supplements. The warts were gone in about 3 weeks and my baby is doing well. These warts were on his tongue, throat all over his mouth....The conventional vet did nothing when the warts were few just said they would come back. Well they have not come back after Dr. Mesonniers treatment and I am looking at making him my permanent vet. I believe a lot of the meds given to pets cause more damage then the conditions, I like the holistic and conventional approach.!! Read Less

Dr. Messonnier price gouged us on prescription medications. Our 15 yr old cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He prescribed methimazole AND supplements. For the first bottle of methimazole, one ounce, 5mg/ml, 30 day supply, he charged $62. Dr. Messonnier picked it up at the neighborhood pharmacy and we "purchased" it from him. For the second bottle, two ounces, 60 day supply, he charged us $139.70. Once we found out what pharmacy was being used, we made an inquiry at the pharmacy and were told that the first bottle cost is actually $30.65 (he marked it up 100% or $31) and the second's actual cost is $63.60 (he marked it up 120% or $76). His office manager tells us, unapologetically, Thats the price of doing business with us. Oh really? We've NEVER had any other veterinarian do this to us. Then there were the first TWO supplements he sold us. Both are Heel products. He charged $30 for one, one-ounce bottle (tablets mixed in water) and $20 for the other. A total of $50 for one ounce each. Checking online, both those Heel products are sold 100 tabs to a bottle at around $25 per bottle and theyd last a LOT longer than what he sold us (we estimate a 4-5 times markup). Then the latest supplement we purchased (for possible bladder/urinary health) was $24.75. Again, a bottle of the same Heel product, 100 tabs, can be purchased online for the same amount and last a lot longer. After complaining, he then had the balls to send us a letter saying he would not treat my cat any more. I called that office and told them there was NO WAY I was ever coming back there anyway, so you could've saved your paper. Do NOT make the mistake of taking your beloved pet here. You will be sorry! If you are looking for a vet who does more than drugs and surgery, you've found the master! Dr. Shawn Messonnier not only treat birds (a rarity!) and "all creatures great and small," he does so as naturally as possible. He keeps himself well informed in both aspects of veterinary care, traditional and natural. (The word "holistic" does not apply in vet medicine, as animals cannot benefit from counseling and other modalities in human health care.) He is an excellent vet. He saved my 9-year-old cocker spaniel from cancer. He found a small little dewclaw tumor and felt it was cancer. He removed it and it was a fast growing cancer. Today, my dog is 13 and still going strong. I really like his holistic approach along with his use of traditional medicine. I recommend Dr. Shawn to everyone that I know. His work with pets who have cancer is amazing. My dog's brother (who had another owner) died from cancer right before Rocky's was discovered. I know it was genetic. Without Dr. Shawn, I know my dog would have suffered a similar fate. Thanks to Dr. Shawn and his staff for truly being a life saver. Read Less

Be careful going to this Vet! Leading a holistic lifestyle myself, I decided to bring my dog to see a holistic vet. He had 2 concerns that I wanted the vet the address- a holistic approach to treating his allergies and examining his skin for what I thought were flea bites or an infection. Dr. Messonnier was nice, but I kept feeling his priority was trying to make the most money he could off of me. He said since my dog was already "senior" which 5 years old is not senior, I needed to do blood work every 6 months and a urinalysis and if I didn't comply, made me feel like I was being a bad parent. He then prescribed some herbal antibiotics and expensive antioxidant pills, both of which had absolutely NO effect on my dog! I then get a call a couple days later saying his urinalysis was abnormal and we needed a repeat one and also do a more in-depth test. I know my dog better than any vet. He had displayed no symptoms but again, Dr. Messonnier basically "forced" his opinion and scared me into thinking my dog could potentially have serious diseases if I didn't comply. Well, the test result of course came back negative. There was never any issue. So after 2 trips there and about $700 dollars later, my dog STILL had a skin infection, NO improvements in his allergy symptoms, and not to mention the scare about a structural kidney disease. To top it off, I never got a follow-up call asking about his skin infection or allergy but instead got called about scheduling him for a DENTAL! Past forward a couple of months...I go in to purchase a probiotic product. The EXACT same product was cheaper at his online store, but he refused to honor the online price. Sounds like he just wanted to mark up the product! That was the last straw that broke the camel's back for me. Paws & Claws, you have definitely lost a customer!! Read Less

Dr. Shawn is a great vet. He saved my dog's life three years ago from an aggressive cancer.  He spotted the tumor in his dew claw where it was nearly impossible to notice. He quickly did surgery and my dog was back to normal in no time.  If he had not taken the time to thoroughly examine him, we would have lost our little baby.  Three years later, our dog is healthy, happy and plays like a puppy. Just moved from Arizona to the area. Let's just say this doctor and staff don't care about the animals nor the client. Went in for my cat and dog ... He pushed everything on me! I was overwhelmed and went with it all without feeling confident! Went home that evening and then went back the very next morning to return some meds that I decided I didn't feel were necessary for my dog and they refused to refund me. The foil is still sealed on the container ... The front desk lady said I "should of decided I didn't want it at the time of service before walking out the door!!!" I am writing the Better Business Bureau and contact anyone I can to warn them! Holistic ... What a joke!!! This doctor is trying to push more meds ("natural stuff") on my dog for seizures then what he actually is on...he has been seizure-free for 4 years! And his thyroid meds cost $60 for 120 pills (2x a day)... And he changed the brand. My old vet in AZ gave me 380 pills (2x a day) for $28... This place is a joke!!! Shame on me for believing in this place!!! It's a scam!!!!!!! Read Less

Dr. Shawn Messonnier will be the death of your pet and will leave you and your family heartbroken. I took my pug dog in for an exam because he had a wet cough and rattling wet breathing. Dr. Messonnier listened to my dogs lungs, heart and throat and diagnosed him as perfectly healthy, but then went on to sell me multiple natural supplements to support his immune system. I kept saying are you sure? even asking for antibiotics at one point just to be on the safe side. He refused to prescribe them because he said he believed they are prescribed too often and he wanted to take a wait & see approach. I trusted his diagnosis because I thought his degree along with multiple framed D Magazine articles about him on the wall, along with other endorsements were more important than my gut feeling. A member of his staff called days later to inquire as to how my dog was doing. I told them he was the same, no better or worse. They seemed surprised that he wasnt worse. I asked about antibiotics again. The staff member told me the Dr. said that if my pug dog starts coughing and doesnt stop, to bring him in again and then hell put him on antibiotics. The symptom described never took place. Later that night I had to rush my pug dog to an emergency vet in the middle of the night because he suddenly had trouble breathing. The emergency vet refused to treat him because they were unsure of the reactions between the medications and the holistic supplements that Dr. Messonnier put him on. They kept my baby in an oxygen crate where he remained stable until Paws and Claws Animal Hospital opened at 8am. I rushed my dog over at 8am. He was getting worse. When I walked in the front office staff were indifferent and rude and told me they had a patient scheduled so the Dr. couldnt see us. I had to plead with her and the Dr. finally came out. I HAD TO CONVINCE HIM TO HELP US. He took my pug dog back and had no idea what to do. His vet tech, who was more of a bored teenager, had no clue how to put an iv in, and neither did he! They didnt even have an oxygen crate. Dr. Messonnier injected a couple medicines into my dog and then fumbled around for 15 minutes, then finally told me that Id have to take my dog to a specialist just up the road because he didnt know what was wrong. Then, as my pug dog is barley clinging to life, he tells me to go upfront and take care of the bill first, and then you can take him $233.27. I raced as fast as I could, but my pug dog, my friend, my baby, slipped away while gasping for breath on the way to the place just up the road. My pug dog died, looking up at me, gasping for breath, years before his time, from a pneumonia that was misdiagnosed by Dr. Shawn Messonnier. Either that Doctor lacks the ability to diagnose & treat a simple infection early on, or he wanted to give himself the opportunity to make money by selling me some useless supplements first and then antibiotics days later. Research him and youll find that Dr. Messonnier is a veterinarian who thinks he is a real doctor. He writes books about how to cure you of breast cancer using holistic supplements, and he gets away with it because there is no regulation in holistic medicine; not in human medicine and not in veterinary medicine. He is incredibly narcissistic, egotistical, and arrogant. Dr. Shawn Messonnier will be the death of your pet and will leave you and your family heartbroken. Read Less

Dr. Shawn Messonnier will be the death of your pet and will leave you and your family heartbroken.I took my pug dog in for an exam because he had a wet cough and rattling wet breathing. "Dr." Messonnier listened to my dog's lungs, heart and throat and diagnosed him as "perfectly healthy," but went on to sell me multiple supplements to "support his immune system." I asked for antibiotics just to be on the safe side. He refused to prescribe them because he said he believed they are prescribed too often and he wanted to take a wait & see approach.I trusted his diagnosis. After all, he is the one with the veterinary degree he so proudly displays. I thought his degree along with multiple framed "D Magazine" articles about him on the wall, along with his association with Martha Stewart, who has distanced herself from him over the past year, cancelling his SIRIUS show on her channel where he got to promote his "I cured my wife from breast cancer and I'll teach you how to cure yourself too" books. I thought all these things were more important than my gut feeling. I PAY FOR HAVING TRUSTED THIS "VET" EVERY SINGLE DAY. A member of his staff called days later to inquire as to how my dog was doing. I told them he was the same, no better or worse. They seemed surprised that he wasn't worse. I was concerned by her tone and asked if I should bring him back in and I asked about antibiotics again. The staff member told me the "Dr." said that if my pug dog starts coughing and doesn't stop, to bring him in again and then he'll put him on antibiotics. The symptom described never took place.Later that night I had to rush my pug dog to an emergency vet in the middle of the night because he suddenly had trouble breathing. When I walked in the front office staff were indifferent and rude and told me they had a patient scheduled so the "Dr." couldn't see us. I had to plead with her and the "Dr." finally came out. I HAD TO CONVINCE HIM TO HELP US! He took my pug dog back and had no idea what to do. His vet tech, who was more of a bored teenager, had no clue how to put an iv in, and neither did he! They didn't even have an oxygen crate. What kind of a vet doesn't have an oxygen crate? He performs sedation dental cleanings and mild surgeries; why would he not have this important piece of equipment?? Dr. Messonnier injected a couple medicines into my dog (he told us they were heart medicines for heart failure) and then fumbled around for 15 minutes, then finally told me that I'd have to take my dog to a specialist "just up the road" because he didn't know what was wrong.  Then, as my pug dog is barley clinging to life, he tells me to "go upfront and take care of the bill first, and then you can take him." Time is of the essence, and he's worried about getting paid. I had been to this "vet" a couple times before. I've paid $600, $800, and almost $1000 more for a dental cleaning. WHEN IT COMES TO MY TONKA, COST WAS NEVER A FACTOR! We paid so much to this man thinking we were receiving the absolute best care possible. I raced as fast as I could, but on our way "just up the road (121 & Coit) my pug dog, my friend, my baby, slipped away while gasping for breath. He died, looking up at me, gasping for breath, years before his time. A pneumonia, or a heart condition. I don't know for sure, I'm not a doctor. "Dr." Shawn Messonnier thoroughly examined Tonka, not 12 hours after the wet cough started A FULL WEEK BEFORE he passed away.  He didn't order blood tests. He didn't prescribe antibiotics. HE TOLD ME IT WAS ALLERGIES and sold me SUPPLEMENTS. He acted confident in his decision and I trusted in his knowledge and education because he was the doctor. How can a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine miss the signs of heart disease/failure or pneumonia?  Either Dr. Shawn Messionnier lacks the ability to diagnose & treat a simple infection early on, or the more common early stages of heart failure, or he wanted to give himself the opportunity to make money by selling me some useless supplements first and then antibiotics and/or heart medication days later. Research him. When a business has only 5-star and 1-star reviews, you know that business is attempting damage control. Looking back on all the appointments as a whole, I agree with other reviews I wish I had read before; he is incredibly narcissistic, egotistical, and arrogant.

Read Less

Dr. Shawn Messonnier should not have a license to practice veterinary medicine. Read Less
