We found Roanoke Animal Hospital when we first moved to Texas in 1999. We have moved 3 times during that period and tried other places but always return to them. We have found each and every person working there, regardless of their role, to be caring and attentive to our fur family. We trust them with the ongoing health of our dogs and cats but they have also been there for us over the years for spay/neuter, other needed surgeries and sadly, end of life help. These amazing humans have cared for my rescue pups for years and have seen us through lots of ups and downs. I love everyone there—office team, the techs, the docs. They consistently treat us like family, give excellent care, and work to make trips to the vet worry-free , especially great for my fearful Aussie mix! We've been taking our dogs to Roanoke Animal Hospital for years. (And my mom did with hers before me.) Doctors and staff are always super courteous and helpful. Most importantly, you can tell they love animals. Dr Noel even gets down on the floor with us to do our exams! My dogs have had all their regular stuff done here, plus surgeries (eye, tumors, tooth extractions), heart worm treatment, senior screens - you name it. Always the very best of care. You will walk in and right away be met by an employee who will walk you back to your room - no sitting around in a room full of barking or meowing. The staff becomes family to you and your pets! And if you have one, as I did, that had been abused in the past, they encourage you to do just a “treat drop in” which allows your pet to learn that they are friends there! These guys were awesome with my mister kitty. He had to have eye surgery so he was not happy. He's been my boy for years and being apart is hard on us both. We are concerned no more. We've been going here for about 18 months now, and have been nothing but satisfied. This morning, my Portuguese Water Dog (Tank) saw the doc for a really bad stomach upset. We are new to the area and decided to try to find a new vet closer to our house. The building was well maintained and well appointed. It was horribly busy so we felt pushed around since there were so many people in the office at the time. We thought the vet was "ok". The vet was over 30 minutes late to the appointment without anyone coming to at least explain the delay. The vet also gave us some recommendations that did not seem reasonable for a 11 year old dog (vet recommended several expensive specialists to help rule out a more serious condition even though our dog was perfectly healthy at the yearly exam). While I wasn't dissatisfied, I wasn't impressed, either. I didn't feel like the vet really listened to us and our concerns about our dog. Read Less

Roanoke Animal Hospital is the best! I use Roanoke Animal Hospital for both boarding and the veterinary needs of my dogs. Last week I had a family emergency and needed last minute boarding. I called as soon as they opened and was able to drop off my two dogs within the hour. My (old) pups are always treated so good when they stay that I had no worries about their care and was able to take care of my family needs knowing that Sister and Filo would be taken care of and getting love and attention while I was away. They gave Filo an exam during the visit on my request and gave me a full report. It is so nice knowing that I have a place to count on when I have no local family for last minute emergencies. For Sister and Filo, Roanoke Animal Hospital is their extended family...I can't give a high enough recommendation! Read Less

Yesterday was our first time to visit Roanoke Animal Hospital. We had a little sick one and and was thrilled they could see us the same day! We were very happy with our visit. As we were leaving one of the employees (who had not been helping us), called our pet by name and was telling us goodbye. I thought it was great he already knew our pet by name. We will definitely be returning for regular care and are considering lodging and grooming services. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. I do not recommend Roanoke Animal Hospital, always waiting long delays even when you have appointments and when you have an emergency or your dog is sick not attend because you do not have an appointment. I recommend taking it to a place where you attend emergencies because when something goes wrong is better to know the doctor and the doctor your pet. since they refused to care for my sick dog and he died I do not go to this place. This place has been taking care of my dogs for years now. They are great!  They know my dogs by name when we come in and always give them great care. I don't think I've ever been treated so badly in my life. Bella (lab/German shepherd) has NEVER bitten anyone yet every time we have brought her in the staff acts like they're terrified of her. She gets anxious during grooming so we have to have her sedated to do so. I was told on the phone to bring her in between 7-8. When we got there at 7:30, I was asked to come back at 8:30 when someone was there to muzzle her because the staff there at the time couldn't do it. I'm fine with having her muzzled, but it was pretty obvious that they just did not want to even mess with it and I had to be at work so couldn't bring her back at 8:30 anyways. Dr Shepherd has always been a caring vet, with common-sense advice about our dog. However, the other vets seem to grossly overprescribe expensive medication. Fungal infection? Ok-let's do an oral anti fungal. Skin infection? Is it REALLY necessary to prescribe a host of wipes and fancy brand-only, super strong antibiotics? They also won't switch to a similar (or generic) drug, so don't bother asking. After 20 years in the profession of pharmacy, I happen to know that there are dozens of drugs that will do the same thing AND are safe for canines. We have spent literally thousands of dollars on our 1 dog in the past 20 months of going to this vet, and enough is enough. It's a shame, because I think that most of the staff is caring and dedicated. If you are an informed consumer, this place will frustrate you. If you blindly listen to any and all "advice," it's gonna cost you. Read Less

They are expensive - but all costs are shown to you for approval before any work is done. Kennel boarding is reasonable and they will double up dogs when requested. Very caring staff - you are not rushed out the door. Although the logo shows a bird - we were referred to Southlake for our Macaw. Read Less

We've been using this vet since moving to the area about two years ago. We're generally satisfied and use them for boarding as well. Everyone is friendly to us and our dogs. They do seem extremely busy any time we are there. I'm not sure if it's a staffing issue or just popularity. Read Less

Mixed feelings.  Have gone here for several years.  Dr Sheppard is really great but some of the others are not as impressive.  It always seems to take FOREVER.  This is one thing if it is because they are spending a lot of time with you, but 90% of it is sitting in an exam room waiting.  In the past, they have seemed more willing to help when you had an emergency but not so much anymore.  I'm not overly impressed and will likely be looking for a new vet. So. My dog was sick. We took her to Roanoke Animal Hospital to get her shots. She was given a clean bill of health and deemed healthy and fit. One week later she starts vomiting and losing weight rapidly. Still, we were told she was fine. A week later her vomit turned to the color of tar. They have me bring her in, and kept her overnight. She was given a medication to prevent the vomiting, but she still vomited. At that point I was told surgery was necessary because vomiting through that medication meant something awful was going on. So they recommend surgery and I go through with it. I get a call at work - they had opened her and found she had cancer throughout her body, lymphnodes and all. Obviously I'm not angry at them for taking so long to find it. Being a vet calls for diagnoses by exclusion. What angered me - was that not an hour later, while all of this was still very raw - I was called by the front desk to pay. I get it. It's a small business, and that's probably protocol. I'd had to let go of two pets before this. I've had to let go of two pets SINCE this. Never once in those other four experiences was I asked to pay on the spot. I was given time to grieve. I was sent a card, offering condolences. Never ONCE was I asked to pay right then and there, after losing a family member. That lack of compassion spoke to me. Money over pets and compassion. We had to put my 13 year old dog down today and Dr. Shepherd was so kind and compassionate during a very difficult and emotional situation.
