Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital

Round Rock, Texas
General Info
Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital (CTVSH) provides referral services in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Rehabilitation and Conditioning, Neurology and Ophthalmology. The veterinarians at CTVSH have all completed 4-5 year specialized training programs in their respective fields. Each department functions independently, yet interacts closely to provide the best overall care possible.
An appointment with a CTVSH starts with a referral from your family veterinarian. This referral shows true concern for your pet. CTVSH works in cooperation with your veterinarian, forming a comprehensive health care team. Your veterinarian is proficient in all areas of veterinary medicine, while our doctors specialize in one area. Our diagnostics and treatments focus only on those problems which prompted the referral. CTVSH then provides your veterinarian with a complete report of your visit. All other primary health care will continue to be provided by your family veterinarian.

I have taken one cat and 1 Border Collie dog here in emegencies. The staff is very efficient, pleasant and thoughtful. Their prices are reasonable for an emergency center. My kitty could not be saved from eating a rat that had eaten rat poison. The staff was sincerely concerned for, Sir Baby Tiger, and me, as well. My dog, Sir Henry II, was bitten by a rattler. I found him at midnight, finally, then rushed him to this hospital. He survived just fine. Their concern and care for him is dually noted. I have recommended them several times with everyone commending their care and efficiency, as well. Many others, including me, have been severely disappointed with the other emergency clinic on Old Settlers. We feel they put our animals at risk and their prices were considerably more. I reccomend this Animal Emergency and Speciality Hospital first and foremost when you have a desperate need after hours. Read Less

Absolutely amazing staff and vet. Came in with a puppy who swallowed a fly fishing hook this morning. After getting xrays and confirming that she ingested it, the staff calmly explained everything and made me feel at ease. They also were really great with my dog, she is young and not used to vets yet but they made it a wonderful experience for both of us. She passed the hook right as we got home and all is well. I will hopefully never need emergency vet care again but if I do I won't hesitate to come back. Thank y'all so much! Read Less

A couple weeks ago my dog had to have emergency surgery after eating gorilla glue and Dr. Johnson did an awesome job! He stayed humble and reassured me multiple times. His staff was also supportive when I was crying and one said “I would let Dr. Johnson do anything to my dog if needed” and that brought me SO much comfort (because I was a nervous mess). I’ve also been seen by Dr. Bevan for my dog’s hip dysplasia and he was upfront and helpful! I’m very happy with this place even considering the unfortunate circumstances. Read Less

I do not ever leave bad reviews for businesses, but this time I am unfortunately. I have been too upset to even leave the review for months now. My 14 year old Weimaraner had a sudden tumor rupture that caused him to bleed internally late one evening in January 2018. We rushed him to the emergency vet that was recommended by our usual vet. My issue has nothing to do with the veterinarian. She was kind and swift in diagnosing and euthanizing our poor boy to keep him from further pain. My issue is completely with the giggling chuckling rude veterinary techs (I am assuming? Possibly kennel techs or other staff) who were hanging out in a cluster not five feet from the table where my dog was being euthanized. 14 years with this dog, my best friend, and they are yukking it up, giggling and telling jokes/ having a loud conversation right next to us as my friend is dying. I used to be a veterinary tech and now work in nuclear medicine in a hospital around people patients instead of furry ones. I am absolutely shocked and hurt at how blatantly rude this was. If I’d have not been in total grief and shock I’d have slapped them all in the face and I am not a violent person. I still am in disbelief at how we were treated. I will never be back. If you are euthanizing your furry family member here, make sure they keep the rude unempathetic staff far from your baby. My dog and friend deserved better. Read Less

When I was referred to CTVS, I first saw Dr. Bevan, who made time to see me even though I was 15 minutes late (as I recently moved to Texas and wasn’t prepared for the traffic) and didn’t rush my appointment. He was compassionate and after examining my dog, suggested X-ray’ing his hip. My dog had luxating patella surgery a year ago but still limps significantly. My previous surgeon and regular vet never considered the possibility that the lameness could be caused by anything but his knee...so I was quite surprised when Dr. Bevan discovered that my dog’s hip had been fractured at some point and healed - but not properly. He suggested - but didn’t pressure me - that I consult with their rehab department. I now take my dog to Russ for rehab. It is very obvious that Russ cares tremendously about his animal clients, and has always been very respectful to me while giving me updates. I adopted my dog from a shelter only a year ago...and while I’m sad about the terrible life he had before me, I’m glad that CTVS exists to get him back on track. Read Less

Others have rated the emergency care poorly simply because it was busy and they had to wait. It was busy, late at night, on a weekend, when I had to bring my cat in as well. Although I had just worked long hours, was very tired, and would have much rather been at home this visit was obviously unplanned.. as were the other's being treated. My cat was clearly ill and could not wait through the weekend for treatment from my normal vet, but if Drs had given him their full attention the minute we walked in the door, multiple families could have lost furbabies last night. Basically, yes I did wait.. but they were busy (bc they have no control over when emergencys happen).. got to us as quickly as possible.. and were very sincere the entire time. My cat needed to be admitted, but I was able to say goodnight to him and left feeling that he was in good hands with the Drs and caring techs on staff. Even on my way out, the person at the front desk asked how he was doing & what was wrong. Over the next 24 hrs I had constant communication regarding my cat. I received multiple calls from his Dr providing test results, updates, etc. Even when it got busy again and the Dr had said he would call by a certain time, he did as soon as he was able and apologized it was a little later than anticipated. (Again, this is an environment that can't really be planned and not their fault.) Even at discharge, they gave me another update on his status, carefully explained the medications we were going home with, and gave a few tips on how best to administer them. All in all, this team was very considerate and sincere. They took great around-the-clock care of my cat (which obv isn't cheap, even if it is painful on the pocketbook.) I hope we never have a reason to need emergency care again, but if we do, we know where to go! Read Less

I have been to this establishment a total of 3 times and might go back. However, I am leaving a 1 star rating ONLY for my 3rd visit here. I initially took my dog here after she suddenly got ill (Took her during ER hours). They were very helpful, transparent and laid out my options perfectly clear for me. After I left, my dog (of 10 years) her heal drastically got worse over night. She lost her sight and hearing and was having cluster seizures every 20-30 minutes. My family and I decided to help her pass smoothly and we chose to euthanize her. The doctor who was there for us was great. Very soft and gentle breaking everything to me. Although it was one our saddest days, the staff and doctor made it easier. Like I said, the first to visits were picture perfect. I decided to have her ashes returned to us. When I went to pick up the ashes of my dog, things just didn't play out right. I went up to the front and pretty much told them I was there to pick up my dogs ashes. The front desk associate, got up and went in the back to retrieve them. Meanwhile the other 2 or 3 associates at the desk were laughing and joking about. When the woman brought the ashes back to me, she also starts laughing and joining in on the jokes (while she has my dogs ashes in her hands). Keep in mind, this is a dog we have had for 10+ years. This was our best friend, our family member. She then hands me the ashes and basically says (while still giggling) "thanks have a good day, sorry about your loss". WOW. Completely disrespectful. I can honestly compare it to how it is when you get your receipt from a fast food restaurant. Sad and disrespectful way to handle somebody's remains of a loved one. Very upsetting. I almost wanted to say something on the spot, but didn't want to cause further harm. Very Disrespectful and unprofessional. Read Less

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Runk! We have a four month old puppy with an injured leg who has been in a splint for about 6 weeks. Our regular veterinarian wanted us to see an orthopedist to see if it was time to do surgery on his leg rather than just keeping it stabilized. I really didn't want to go that route with such a young puppy, but we went to see what the specialist had to say. Our first appointment was with another orthopedist in another clinic. We waited two weeks to get an appointment and then waited an hour and forty five minutes past our appointment time to see the doctor! Why we waited that long instead of walking out is still a mystery to me! When we finally did see the doctor, she didn't take a new xray (the old one was two and a half weeks old and on a puppy of this age, that seemed like a big deal to me!). She immediately said that he needed to have surgery and 6 weeks of absolute crate rest to heal. When we started to ask questions about the risks involved, whether there was risk in waiting, and just general things you would want to know before allowing someone to cut into your puppy, she became very irritated with us. She had no interest in answering our concerns and seemed to be getting angry with us for daring to question her mandate. She offered to let us see another orthopedist in her office for free to get a second opinion, but that would take a week and a half to set up. In the meantime, knowing that she was the owner of the clinic and that she would benefit from our business even if we used the other orthopedist in her clinic, I decided I didn't want to go there any more. She was really quite offensive and we left without any answers. I called my veterinarian and explained what happened and asked if there was someone else we could see. She got us an appointment in two days with Dr. Runk. Dr. Runk's attitude was so refreshing - she was open, optimistic, and happy to answer my questions. She immediately told me she couldn't offer an opinion based on a two and a half week old xray. She did an exam, took and xray, and said that she did not think my puppy would benefit in anyway from surgery at this time. His leg was healing well and, although there was one bone that was slightly out of place, she didn't feel that trying to move it with surgery would be worthwhile at this time. She couldn't promise he wouldn't need surgery sometime in the future, but she was very optimistic and scheduled us for physical therapy instead. I was ecstatic! Even if we have to do surgery down the road, I completely trust Dr. Runk to do that. She answered everyone of my questions and was patient and understanding. Everyone there is smiling and happy and I don't have to hesitate to leave Rev in their care during the day for his water treadmill sessions. I think they also do all kinds of other specialty care. If your veterinarian recommends seeing a specialist, ask for a referral to these guys! Read Less

Dr Susan Johnson of the Elgin Vet Hospital performed a routine spay operation on my 6 mo German Shepherd. Aware of her megasophagus diagnosis she refused to release her to me to care for her during her post surgery recouperation, reassuring me she would be fine spending the night at the hospital. When I arrived the following morning my GSD WAS WEAK AND THROWING UP red fluid. Dr. Johnson wasn't alarmed by this and actually said this is normal. I didn't take her home because of her very grave looking condition so I sat outside with her on the lawn and after a short while she violently gagged and threw up red fluid, gave a high pitched cry and collapsed. Very upset I told the Dr. who after anexam and xray told me she had aspiration pneumonia and it didn't look like she would make it. I was hysterical. This Dr has to be the most incompetent Dr (don't get me started). With a referral I rushed to Central Texas Veterinary Hospital. Dr Sharon Theisen rushed out of the building upon my arrival, scooped my dying German Shepherd out of the front seat and whisked her into hospital. I was shocked and impressed by her enthusiasm. Dr Kerpsack met with me moments later and I was told her throat was full of newspaper that was in her cage and that she spent the night eating!! The aspiration Pneumonia Dr Johnson diagnosed her with was not correct. What she saw on the xray was her stomach jammed up in her throat. She gagged so hard trying to dislodge the newspaper she coughed her stomach into her enlarged esophagus and it was strangling her stomach to death. Dr Kerpsack, who is a living hero to me and obviously a talented and intelligent surgeon saved her life. He was knowledgeable, patient and all business and I am so thankful for his expertise. Upon Sheena's leaving the hospital, Dr. Thiessen, also my hero, remarked what a lucky dog she was. I was the lucky one. We were referred to Dr. Kerpsack by our vet for our chocolate labs hip replacement. We were very nervous about the costs and making the decision to proceed, it was a $3500 operation. Dr. kerpsack was very informed and is recognized as probably the most qualified surgeon in Austin to perform these surgeries. There are a lot of possible side effects that he was very upfront about and in the end helped us reach our decision to try the surgery. So far we have had a great outcome and would recommend to anyone in the same position weighing the costs vs benefits. Read Less

Out of necessity my dog and I were referred to Dr. Beardsley due to a botched surgery from another vet clinic (seems to be a common thing at this clinic). I can not say enough positive things about my experience at central vet hospital...the staff is friendly and helpful, Dr. Beardsley really cares and took the time to explain to me exactly where the last surgery had gone wrong and what options we had. And she values ""quality of life"" for my dog more than just finances, or easy solutions. We ended up with our dog in physical therapy and had a wonderful experience with Deborah who is in charge of the pt department. She is so friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. I am so glad that I found Central Texas Vet Hospital. It has renewed my faith that there are great people that really care about our animals! Read Less

Read Less

Although they have qualified Vets here, the wait time to see one is obscene. Last night I sat in the exam room 40 minutes and still no vet. The waiting room was empty. Was told they had two vets and only one room ahead of me. Ummmmm, so why 40 minutes. The last time I was there I waited 30 minutes. Needless to say, I left and went to the AMPM Clinic down the road and was seen immediately. If there is going to be a long wait, the front desk personnel should at least advise the cutsomer of this. When you bring your pet in after hours, it's because there is a problem and the last thing anyone needs to do is sit in a small room with your pet for 40 minutes. I've always waited a long time here and I vow never to go back.

Sheena Von Jetta saved my life years later and she is and will eternally be my special little hero. CTVH is amazing! Read Less

Read Less

I am so impressed with and grateful for this particular animal hospital. One of my pets, Spot, has been struggling with a condition that no one seemed to know how to treat or cure. Dr. Kerpsack's year and a half commitment to helping Spot has been extraordinary and well above the call of duty. Happily, and because of Dr. Kerspack, Spot is getting better. I wouldn't take my pets anywhere else for surgical care in Austin. Thank you to the staff of Central Texas Veterinary Hospital. Read Less
