Dr. McGehee saved my dog's life! Ziggy, my mini Schnauzer, was very ill and suffering from the symptoms of Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. I thought I was going to have to make that tough decison pet parents could only dread. As soon as he saw Ziggy, he knew exactly what to do. His knowledge and expertise shined through. Ziggy is now on the road to recovery and making a speedy turnaround. Dr. McGehee is very straight forward and only suggests what is absolutely necessary. He doesn't beat around the bush like some other veterinarian's seem to do, racking up uneccesary costs. I can't thank him and his courteous staff for all that they did to help us. When I arrived at the vet clinic, I was very intimidated by the establishments look. I entered the facility and felt as though my rabbit would not be in good hands just by looking at the condition. Never have I been so wrong. The staff was composed of some or the most friendly, laid back, yet responsible and knowledgeable people ever. All of the customers I saw coming in also we're so nice and I really could tell they loved this place, the employees even know the customers and their pets by names which is very rare to see now a days. I absolutely recommend this place to any exotic pet owner or pet owner in general. They are very kind and mean well. They took amazing care of my rabbit, ensuring she would be in safe hands and they did not fail to keep their promise. They even went as far as to give me a slight discount for something that came up. The ONLY negative critic I would have for this vet would be the cleanliness of the place and that I wish I could have spoke to the veterinarian. If you are a true pet lover you will love this place i cannot praise all the staff here enough they treat your babies like its their own. They are not a for show place they do not have a fancy office what they do have are state of art equipment to treat your fur babies they have labs and X rays etc. All done in house. I used to work closely with an adoption group who always spoke highly of this vet. Honestly I don't know why I haven't used them before, because it was a great experience. My dog had been to another vet and was put on a month of antibiotics, and I was told she was allergic to fleas. I came to this vet once, and my dog is already 10 times better! I'm a new patient  thinking  I'm going to a holistic  veterinarian  but I was wrong. They will tell you what you want  to  hear on the phone. Secondly  when  they put me in the waiting  room I looked over at the magazines and I saw a Hunting Magazine  and it was addressed  to  the main  Veterinarian  that came into the room. How can you kill animals  for  sport then call yourself a veterinarian?  Disgusting I would  say . I have taken numerous animals- dogs, cats, large parrots, snakes, you name it to Doc and staff for over 13 years. I absolutely wouldn't go anywhere else. They do truly care about your pet and make sure you are able to treat them with whatever means you may have. I respect Doc because I know he is not out there to sell me stuff I don't need and make money off of me. He just wants to make my pet better or comfortable, whatever the case may be. I acknowledge that practicing this way (and with alternative meds and therapies) may not be for everyone, but I respect it and am grateful for everything they have done for me over the years. I mean, upon bringing my new dog Stella in for her first visit there, Doc opened the exam room door and yelled STE-LLA!! Why would I ever want to go anywhere else? LOL. As for the office staff being rude: Jennifer is my savior. I have called and talked to her about more topics more times than I can count. She is always patient with me and explains things so I can understand. Perhaps in other circumstances she wasn't greeted with kindness in the first place. Only conjecture on my part, but generally in life you get what you put out there. They are only human after all. (And I bet they much prefer dealing with the animals over their picky humans any day.) We have used Dr McGeehee for 15 years and we love him. We had a large dog we took there for 14 years and they treated him like he was their dog! I knew I was leaving him in good hands when we kenneled him as well as when he needed help medically. They ARE busy as others stated so sometimes there is a wait but usually not terribly long. They were compassionate when we had to put him down and the assistant cried along with us as this was done. We are now about to lose our cat and the visiting Dr. Leland was extremely helpful yesterday with diagnosis and her counseling on the process. My wife and I searched for a good vet, and after a recommendation, we made an appointment and took our 2 year old boxer in for a growth she had on her ear.  Of course we were concerned since boxers are prone to cancer...so we made an evening appointment, loaded her in the car, and headed in.  The staff was really friendly and every seemed really nice.  The place looks like it's been there awhile, and some people might be put off by this...but they shouldn't be.  When we got in to see the doctor, he was great.  Our boxer took to him (she generally is uneasy with strangers), and within a second of looking at her, he told us the problem.  She had a tumor, and he assured us it would clear up in a few weeks, and if not to bring her back.  A few weeks later, the tumor is gone, and she's a happy dog again.  I got a really good feeling that he seems to really care about the animals.  He didn't push us for anything more than we needed.  We had a heartworm test, and he didn't try to push expensive medicine on us.  I will take my other dog and my horde of cats to him in the future. All of my pets have been very well taken care of by Dr. Mcgeehee. My grandma trusted him with her twin shitzu's for the 18 years they were alive and now I have been seeing him ever since with her recommendation. He only cares about the problem you're taking your pet in for, rather than trying to get you to pay tons of money for unnecessary things. He always knows exactly what's wrong... I was told by an emergency vet that I needed to put my dog down because she was dying and turns out she only had a stomach infection. I'm glad I got a second opinion because all she needed was antibiotics which Dr Mcgeehee gave her right away and she's been fine ever since. I trust him and only him.. I had been going to this vet for years until I took my cocker spaniel for a bug bite and was convinced by the staff to check his lymph nodes.  I agreed and 45 minutes later I was told my dog had lymphoma and had roughly 60 days to live.  Naturally I cried but the staff and vet assured gave me options, chemo therapy, which would cost thousands of dollars and my dog was 10 years old at the time, or buy their expensive herbal remedy.  At 100 dollars a bottle (1 week supply) they assured me that it would slow down the process.  Of course I jumped on that option and for months and months used their medication.  It seemed to work because he was still alive and kicking.  I got laid off a year after diagnosis and could not afford the medication.  Mind you this is now 2011.  I moved to Atlanta, GA for a job and for my fiancee.  My dog has not been on that medication for 3 years and guess what, he's still alive.  I took him to another vet and they told me that my dog was fine!!!  Nothing is wrong with him.  Did Castle WEst purposely lied to me to get me to buy this expensive mediation???? Sure seems like it.  I am now looking into reporting them to the Better Business Bureau as well as looking for an attorney.  How can they do that to someone??  The only way I can be satisfied is if they reimburse me for all the money I spent on this medication.  There is no cure for lymphoma, but there is for lying, cheating "medical professionals" Read Less

Since moving to San Antonio, I've taken great care to make sure my animals were all settled in, this included finding a reputable vet. I scoured the interwebs for reviews of a vet and decided on Castle West for two reasons. It's a five minute drive from me and their reviews were all positive. I also made phone calls and price matched them to other vets in the area, they were cheaper by an average of $10-15. My dog Bolivia is the only one to visit Castle West. Her first visit was for a check up because of some hot spots. Funny enough, I made the appointment and Dr. McGehee had an emergency and wasn't in the office. His substitute was incredibly friendly and informative. If she wasn't a traveling doctor I probably would have followed her to her practice. The second time was after a demodectic mange episode after she visited a chain where nothing of value took place. The second time, Dr. McGehee was out again for vacation (can't hold it against him, have to take it when you can get it). The substitute was again friendly and informative. She was also really gentle with the skin scrape. You know what they say, third times a charm and it sure was. We finally got to meet Dr. McGehee himself. He was incredibly nice and happy. Usually my dog is stand offish with strange men but she took to him without hesitation. He explained everything to me and made sure to tell me if the problem started up again to call them up and they would be happy to get me some more medicine without requiring an office visit since we knew what the problem was. His reassurance and friendliness helped calm what was a stressful situation for my pup and me. I couldn't recommend him more! His patients have been seeing him for years and I can tell why. Just a heads up, the practice is very small, there are two exam rooms. Depending on the animals before you, your wait could be a bit. I have now used this vet twice- the first time was a few years back (2009?) and the second was yesterday.First visit was when my cats got ear mites and one got a pretty bad infection- a giant blister bubbled up on his ear and needed to be surgically opened, cleaned out, and shut with a drain. As a college student working two jobs, I called around to see who could do this affordably, and Dr. G's price was about the best I could find and their staff was super sweet. A few days after I picked up the cat, the blister came back and, being in the financial situation I was, I called back in tears to tell them and ask what to do, since it put me overdrawn on my account to do the first surgery- they had me bring him back and fixed it again, full of apologies for not getting all of the infection the first time.Five stars based on that experience alone.Thought of them again when a problem recently cropped up with my other cat- he began going to the bathroom outside of the litter box. Nothing in his environment had changed, and he's a well-behaved guy, so I did a Google search and found out that he may have a UTI or bladder issue- so back to Dr. G I went.Called to make appt, gave all details, was asked to drop him off the next day after seven AM- easy peasy. Dropped my little guy, went off to work, and before I got off, the Doc called and let me know it was a UTI and how to fix it- antibiotics for a week and more liquids in cat's diet, either by switching to wet food or going dry-prescription. Unfortunate but fixable- and when I explained to Doc that my little guy doesn't eat wet food (or people food), he just licks at it and doesn't seem to understand that it's FOOD, he made a few helpful suggestions to try, rather than trying to sell me on the pricey and inconvenient dry-script stuff.Two thumbs way, way up for this guy, his staff, and his obvious care for animals. I've been going to Dr McGehee for probably 10 years now and he is one of the nicest, most caring and compassionate people I have ever met.  He has a genuine love for animals that is very special.  I recently lost my cat of 16 years and towards the end we were in his office a lot.  He remained positive about the treatment of my dear kitty and took such good care of him, he really understood how much he meant to me.  Many vets become disconnected with years of practice, but not Dr. McGehee.  It is hard to put into words... the genuine compassion he possesses isn't something that you learn in school, it comes from the heart.  In addition to this, he is very educated and explores all avenues of treatment.  I really feel that I am getting the best available care at his clinic.  Cannot recommend highly enough. Dr. McGehee and the staff at Castle West have been so wonderful with the injured dog I found and brought in. He was mauled by another dog and in such bad shape, but the staff has taken wonderful care of him. He is now on the mend, which I would hope from any veterinarian staff. What makes this hospital different is the TIME they have spent dealing with me (I call a LOT) and the doctor calling me himself with the dog's update. Also, they have shown SUCH care and compassion for this dog who belongs to no one, and are working patiently with me while I try to find him a Forever Home. Dr McGehee and his staff are an exceptional bunch! In November I took my cat in who had been diagnosed with a very serious life threatening cancer. Dr McGehee mentioned that he was having a lot of success with an herbal treatment fighting this particular kind of cancer. He performed a surgery on my cat to remove the existing tumor and then we started the herbal regimen. SUCCESS!!!! The lump has still not grown back. I am not saying she is cured but the cancer has slowed.I love the Dr's  approach using both traditional and non-traditional forms of medicine! Read Less

Since I've had my own pets, I've been taking them to see Dr. McGehee. He really seems to care about each animal, as opposed to other vets that I've visited that may as well be oiling a toaster instead of giving my dog a shot, with the impersonal attitude they have. Dr. McGehee will take the time to explain his diagnosis and discuss possible treatment options with you, and make sure that you understand what's going on with your pet, the small and hairy love of your life.The clinic is clean and the techs are great. The parking lot, however, is minuscule and difficult to get out of... but if that's the only problem, I'll be sticking with Castle West. Bonus: Their building front is really cool looking! Read Less
