Took my dog here yesterday for first time, very pleased! The staff is very friendly & considerate, & was very sweet to my pup. Even tho I had to wait a while, they checked on us multiple times, offered water to myself & my pup, & explained why it was taking a while. When the Dr came in she was very polite & professional, & even tho it was late she took the time to discuss things with me without it feeling rushed! Dedicated professionals who went above and beyond to help when my sweet furbaby had a crisis. After five years of perfect health, she suddenly took ill. The wonderful folks at Deerfield Animal Hospital worked for hours and discovered that she most likely had Addison disease. Dr. Grabel followed up with a phone call that evening to check on her and even called the emergency vet to let them know we might be in if she took a turn for the worse. I am just in awe of this place! Thank you for fitting us in for a same day apt. This was our first time here and as soon as you walk in the front staff acknowledges you. I mentioned that my dog is nervous and a barker and one of the receptionists was kind and took us in a room immediately and allowed me to fill out the paperwork in the room. My dog is an anxious dog and they did everything they could to make his visit comfortable, thank you to Dr. Anne Foster for being so awesome and explaining everything so well BTW Dr. Foster also called us on Saturday (the end of the day for her) to check up on Knuckles to see how he was doing WOW. Have been taking my pets to Deerfield since 2004. Drs. Hey and Halberg have been excellent at every visit. They are patient and really seem to care. I have never been turned away when I call needing to bring one of my pets in for an acute issue. Once I even walked in at closing time, terrible I know, and Dr. Hey attended to my dog without reservation. Their staff are so sweet. My dog was a patient at Deerfield for a year or so and was treated for his CHF here. When his condition worsened and it was time for him to go, we brought him to Deerfield to be put to sleep. It was a heartbreaking experience but the staff and Veterinarian made it as bearable as it could be. I don't know where to start. We started using Deerfield about 9 years ago with Dr. Hey-is our primary doc however all the other veterinarians are absolutely wonderful. When our 15 year old cat was dying and there would be no way she would have made it thru the nite. It was on a Sunday afternoon. Dr Hey was with his family at the Botanical Center but came over to the clinic and put our cat to sleep. What vet would do that? We had an aging boxer-who over the years has had mast ...cell tumors removed which he did excellent work. We just yesterday had to make the hardest decision ever to put her to sleep as she was struggling. Dr. Hey was out of town but Dr. Faesler was there and helped us by letting us know we we're making the right decision because there was not a positive outcome for our 12 1/2 year old Pacey. She was so kind and the staff as well. Dr. Kromwenter is so wonderful as well. The staff always follows up with phone calls. Makes you feel that you're their only patient. It's rare that I leave reviews, but want everyone to know about our experience with Deerfield. While we were out of town on vacation, our sweet dog Molly, who was a13 year old Border Collie, suddenly had a terrible seizure and would not stop having them. She was staying with dear friends who are like family, thank goodness, and they called to let us know she was acting very strangely. She seemed to be in great health before we left for vacation. Anyway, over the course of... a day, her condition greatly deteriorated and so they took Molly to Deerfield. We found that Molly was experiencing liver failure. Deerfield could have really taken advantage of us by running all kinds of unnecessary tests and giving her all kinds of unnecessary medicine, but they didn't. It was horrible being out of town and handling everything over the phone. They were so caring, gentle and understanding with our friends, our sweet dog Molly and with us. We were blown away by how well they treated us, even though we had NEVER been to Deerfield before. It was clear that this hospital truly loves animals. We had to put Molly down and it was absolutely awful. Dr. Anne Faseler was full of compassion and care. She treated all of us with respect and kindness. She even sent us a handwritten card sending us her condolences. Wow. We will never forget how well they treated our family and friends. Your pet is like a family member and this is the place to come to for all their needs.  I've brought my Chihuahua for her regular shots as well as walked in for emergency care.  She's a feisty little thing, but they cater to your pet's personality.  While in the waiting room they cleared the room of other animals just to walk in a nervous dog as well as cuddle with a puppy waiting for an appointment.  I love the vibe this place sends out as well as the professional care the veterinarian provides.  They definitely treat your pet like their own.Last week I took in my dog who was hurting from her back legs and I don't know why.  The doctor did a thorough examination and came to the conclusion she may have injured her back.  She was given X-rays and medication.   She is recovering well and her pain has eased.  I am so received that she was seen promptly and I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg like another animal hospital I've been to in the past. I had been looking for a new vet and Deerfield was recommended to me by a friend. I noticed my cat had started limping a couple of days ago and had a large scab on the bottom of one paw so I called them this morning to see if they had an available appointment. They're only open from 8am - 12pm on Saturdays and although their appointment schedule was full, they invited me to come over and said they would fit me in. I brought my cat to their office and was immediately shown into the exam room. They took him into the back where they flushed his paw and removed the scab, which revealed a large wound in the pad. They recommended a minor procedure to clean the wound, make sure nothing was lodged in it, and then a quick stitch to close it up. I picked up my cat two hours later with everything attended to. All for a very reasonable fee and without an appointment (which I wouldn't recommend but the fact that they were able to accommodate my last minute request was amazing). Recently our younger cat got sick and we had to take him in see what was wrong. My best friend found this clinic and got an appointment and were seen right away. We had Dr. Gradel and he was super nice but his exam wasn't very thorough. He told us his gums were pink and I had looked at them earlier but they looked pale which when I googled, it said it could be caused by anemia but I thought "hey he's the dr", also you gotta take what you google with a grain of salt lol. The techs also seemed way too scared of him due to his growling which is understandable but hey you know you were going to have to work with animals that weren't always going to be friendly. They did let us know prices before doing anything which I appreciated. They did call us the next day to check on him but he still wasn't any better and the next step was blood work but it was a little too expensive for us. We called around and found a cheaper clinic and they charged half of what deerfield charged. The other dr checked our cat and told us he was anemic due to his gums being pale (google was right). Staff was nice but I didn't feel like our kitty got a proper exam due to them being afraid of him. Prices are fair, but can be out of budget for a recent college grad. Read Less

We left Virginia with a sick dog and had to stop at several vets on our drive to Texas to monitor her progress. Dr Halberg was wonderfully sensitive to how sick our dog was and in gauging our expectations. She helped us find the right dosage for her meds and worked with us even though we were parttime in San Antonio and parttime in San Angelo. Dr Hey is an awesome veterinarian and his staff is the perfect complement to him. I think you can judge a clinic by the staff 99% of the time and this clinic is no exception. I've only been taking my puppy there since we got her 7 months ago and have been so happy with every aspect of care on every visit, without any complaints. The clinic prices are very reasonable and he even has made some suggestions about shopping at the grocery store instead of buying something off his shelves (so, naturally, I buy only from him). They take appointments, and because there are 4 veterinarians here, you can almost always get in same day if needed. Every one of the veterinarians are thorough, attentive, and knowledgeable. They saved my Border Collie from a rattlesnake bite to his face and even delivered medicine for him to my home once. The dog was in a lot of pain and they knew I didn't want to leave his side during this critical event. Lastly, they will price-match internet pet supplies and medication. Just give them the website address where you found the better price, and they will price-match, calling it a "customer appreciation discount". We took in an abandoned doberman over the New Year's holiday. Dr Kronewetter and the staff were absolutely wonderful with her, spelled out her treatment plan very clearly for me, and and even followed up on her a few days later. Dr. Hey (and the entire staff) is wonderful! I had taken our cat to a 24hr vet hospital on Monday and after waiting for 6 hours, xray and bloodwork, they couldn't find what was wrong with him. I took him to Deerfield on the Wednesday after he wasn't getting any better (excessive drooling, wouldn't eat or drink), Dr. Hey opened his mouth and showed me the huge ulcer our poor cat had. He took such good care of him: fed him, trimmed his nails, gave him his first dose of antibiotic (tried to show me how but since I couldn't hold him the way required, he told me to bring him in and the nurses would give him the next dose). We are new to the area, and needed a good vet ASAP because our Australian Shepard was having crazy allergy issues. I saw all of this particular vet's great reviews & decided to call them up. They were so accommodating even over the phone, & got me in as a walk-in within 2 days. I got there at 730am fully expecting to wait awhile because we didn't have an appointment, but they called us back into a room within 15 mins. Our doctor was amazing & went above & beyond to make sure our doggy was taken care of, & the staff was also great in making sure we knew how to properly administer all of his meds. I cannot say enough about Dr. Halburg and her staff.  I had recently relocated to San Antonio and had been seeing another vet for about 6 months for my 16 year old dog who appeared to be having major panting issued.   I was seeing another vet and  had some expensive testing done and had followed up for 12 days with no return call and excuses as to why no call from the staff.  At that point I decided to get a second opinion which is when I met with Dr. Halburg in Aug 2015.  She reviewed all of the transferred records and recommended minimal testing, and came up with a treatment plan.  She personally called and followed up with me to see how treatment was going which to me was amazing.  In Feb 2016 we started to have additional issues and I was always seen same day.  We ended up deciding  to have an ultrasound and Dr. Halburg  called me on her day off to go over the tests.  At that point we had found a large mass and Dr Halburg explained everything in a way I could understand from treatment plans, instructions on how to evaluate the dog to see how she was doing and also explaining options for when the time came to let her go.  Over the next months, I had several questions and concerns and Dr Halburg always called me back the same day usually within an hour of me leaving a message.   I was never rushed or felt to be a burden with my calls and questions.  When it was necessary for appointment it was always my decision on testing and the fees were always discussed upfront.This past Sunday, our dog took a quick turn for the worse and was suffering with yet another issue and it was time to say goodbye.  I called Dr. Halberg office and left a message for the emergency number and within 5 minutes she returned my call.  We reviewed her current condition and together we decided it was time to say goodbye.  So that I did not have to go to the emergency vet for my final goodbye she met us at her office, on a Sunday that was also the Father's Day holiday.  She was extremely caring and compassionate to the very end.  I would highly recommend Dr. Halburg and her staff and will continue to use her services for my other dog as you will not find more compassionate care for your pets. She also recognized a major medical problem in my other dog that a different vet had previously misdiagnosed. I trust her more than any vet in the world. Dr. Hey is also really, really great, I've seen him a few times when I couldn't see Dr. Halberg and he is awesome. The vet staff are all so friendly, I love them all. Also, they have a nice web portal thing for messaging and scheduling, plus they send out reminders when your vaccines are due. It's not why I go here, but it's a bonus. I have never been overcharged for anything; they are always up-front about the costs of tests and they've even waived some of the exam fees when I've had multiple visits in a short time period, which they didn't have to do but I really appreciated. Maybe I shouldn't say this, but I know that they actually UNDERCHARGED me on at least one occasion (took four x-rays but only charged me for two). I don't know of any other vet who would do that. You won't find a smarter or more compassionate group of veterinarians to care for your animals. NOTE: Not everyone can be as phenomenal as Dr. Halberg and Dr. Hey, so get them if you can. I did have a different vet once that I wasn't as happy with (there are several vets, I'm not familiar with them all, and I'm not saying the others aren't great, they might be, I just can't personally attest to it). We have been seeing D. Faseler for about 5 years now for my cats asthma. We moved from that side of town about 2 years ago and I still drive about 40 mins to see her! She's been absolutely amazing! I don't often write reviews, but when you have an experience like I had with Deerfield Animal Hospital, I figured it was the least I could do. I took my dog to the vet hospital last night (Becker) as my dog was throwing up repeatedly and I feared he may have swallowed something. After waiting 30 mins in line to just check in, Becker tried to charge me an insane amount just for my dog's test. Not only did they want to do x-rays, they wanted to do blood work and charge me to send the x-rays to a radiologist specialist. I told them no and just to do the x-rays. After I came back to review the x-rays, the vet at Becker wanted to keep him overnight for observation, for a mere $900+. The vet then said after 12 hours had passed they were wanted to do another x-ray and if it was still in there, they wanted to surgically remove it. I told them no way and that I wanted a second opinion. I took my dog home and awaited for Deerfield to open (they are my regular vets). I called Deerfield Animal Hospital as soon as I woke up and told them the story. When I got there, I was immediately greeted by the receptionist and right after was put into a room. The vet tech came in and got my description of what happened and gave her the x-rays that I had done at Becker. Dr. Hays came in and told me that surgery was the last resort. Of course they took more x-rays and after confirming the object was still in there, Dr. Hays suggested that we try feeding him and giving him medicine to induce vomiting, hoping that he would throw the obstruction up. I had left as they told me they would keep me updated and not even 15 mins after I left, Dr. Hays personally called me to tell me that it had been a success. I was astounded by the knowledge that Dr. Hays had, as the vet at Becker never gave me the option to try and get him to throw it up. While I definitely spent a few hundred dollars, it was nothing in comparison to what I would have paid for the surgery at Becker. I could not be more happy and relived that my dog is better and it is all thanks to Dr. Hays and the team at Deerfield Animal Hospital. I just moved to San Antonio and shortly after one of my dogs became very ill. Upon a recommendation from a friend I went to Deerfield Animal Hospital. We do not have any family or friends in town, but the genuine care and compassion that we received from the doctors and staff, was so incredibly comforting.All of the team at the front desk recognized my pup every day that we went in and although she is very shy. DO NOT GO TO DEERFIELD ANIMAL HOSPITAL TL;DR - Standard $15 test turned into +$100 bill, Diagnosis: "I don't know" Let me preface this review by saying my family has a veterinary background, so I definitely went in with certain expectations. My pup was experiencing some frequent urination, so on the advice of my dad who is a DVM, I took her in for a routine urinalysis, primarily out of concern of kidney issues. This is a VERY routine test that is usually done in-house for $15-20. This was NOT the case here. I brought the urine in for the test and it was immediately whisked away to be sent to a supposed off-site testing facility in Dallas. I figured fine- won't be a big deal as having it off-site would typically make it less expensive. I was then told to wait for a doctor to return who was on a house call; this is atypical as well but they then said that the test could be done in house and she just needed to be here to do it. Again- fine, if anything they were being accommodating at this point. Once she returned from her house call, the vet proceeded to ask me a few questions of her recent behavior (all of which I knew was normal)- then informed me the prices of their urinalysis exams. In house: $48...Dallas testing facility...$90. This was already a huge red flag for me, the in-house test was more than double what it should have been. Out of convenience (or laziness), I said fine- in house test will be fine and immediately canceled the test of the sample they sent to Dallas. My pup and I wait while the vet proceeds with the in house urinalysis. In 15 minutes or so she comes back with her extremely informative diagnosis: "I don't know why she's having these issues." Frustrated and uninformed, I walk up to the front desk to settle up with my overpriced urinalysis... But wait! There's more! To ask me 3-5 questions about my dog's behavior and to tell me "I don't know"...Deerfield slapped on an exam/checkup fee! This was not asked for, and while I did not refuse the vet's services, was very slyly added onto the services. The total bill was over $100. I will say- the technicians and employees were very kind and willing to help. (Probably only because they knew what I would be paying them, but that's none of my business...) However, their kindness does not outweigh the overpricing and deceptiveness of their services. I will certainly not be returning. Read Less

First I would like to say ALL the doctors have helped me here in some way the past 3 years but Dr.Faseler has been amazing! 3 years ago my cat started acting as if he had hair balls really bad which in turn turned out to be severe asthma attacks! They worked us in one morning as a new patient when I was frantic due to my cats horrible breathing and not knowing what was going on! She took one listen and compared to all his symptoms of what had been going on and informed us he had feline asthma! She was not out to run a million others test to charge us money either! Steroid shot later and he was better in A few days! We have since moved about an hour away but I continue to take him here when his asthma flares up for his steroid shot! In the meantime he is on maintenance meds and they take care of him by calling in prescriptions for prednisone when I need it! Dr. Faseler also periodically calls and checks up on Dash too! While lifelong San Antonians, we recently moved into the area approximately a year ago with our "old man" and our little one (a large and small mixed breed). They make quite the pair and within the last year, have had new, unexpected medical issues. They have treated both of our dogs with knowledge, care and compassion. Both have taken time to discuss health issues at length, plans for diagnosis and treatment. We could not ask for better care.  Never a wait, extremely reasonable pricing...and exceptional care. I was referred by a friend when my puppy was sick. I have found our vet for life!!! I time spent with me and my puppy was great, well worth the office visit charge!! So informational about what things to do and not to do. Recommended treatments that I could afford!! Staff was so awesome, friendly......COMPASSIONATE!!!! Love taking my pups here! From the minute you walk in the staff greets you and are so nice. They genuinely have a love for animals. The doctors are knowledgeable and always advise you to what seems like a personal level, as if it were their own pet. I called this morning to see when my dogs were due for shots and she kindly told me.Then I went on asking other questions and the girl answered all my questions patiently and kindly. I appreciate that very much. Great customer service! I always walk out happy from there. I considered making a move to De-Zavala Vet Clinic because I live within a mile from there now, but after going once for an ear infection and encountering rude staff and a doctor who seemed whatever about the visit, I realized I how great my dogs and myself are treated at Deerfield! I absolutely love and trust the doctors and staff here. I have two older dogs that both have health problems. One dog has been particularly challenging to treat as he has cancer, cholesterol problems, and liver failure. While Dr. Halberg is his main veterinarian, all of the doctors know who we are, address me as if they are very intimate with his health issues, and are exceptional in the care they provide. The Staff - both the reception team and the technicians are phenomenal. They've called with daily status reports when I've had to hospitalize my dog, allowed me to come in for visitation when they were typically closed, and genuinely seem to love and care for my fur babies. Im very disappointed. We have been to this veterinary clinic twice now. The first time went fairly well. We were informed our dog had skin cancer on her initial visit. This came as a complete shock to us, but they said they would be able to operate that same day and it would only cost a little over 200$ for the visit and the operation. Great! They did the operation and everything came out great. Recently, my dog decided to eat a piece of blanket. Now, shes done this before and passed it as a bowel movement or thrown it up, but this time she ate a little more than usual so I thought, "better safe than sorry" and took her to the vet. MY MISTAKE!!! When we first arrived they told us it would only be 160$ for the xray. We went along with it because that was in our price range. We had to leave her there so they could monitor her, with the vet calling us throughout the day to give us updates of what she had done(she gave her fluids to keep her hydrated, and was getting a second opinion from the radiologist to see if surgery was really necessary). Well at the end of the day, they send us home and tell us to just wait it out to see if she will throw it up or pass it as a bowel movement. We go to the front to pay, and it comes out to 630$!!!!!!!!! Everything the vet said she had already done when she called us, we were getting billed for!!! How were we supposed to know that?!?! And when we confront the office manager about this, she replies with ," well you could have said no that you didnt want it." Well, HELLO, she was calling me and telling me she had already did it!!!! Plus they wouldnt take payment plans. Overall very very very disappointed.  If they would have accepted payment plans, i probably wouldn't be making such a big deal out of it, but now I definitely wont be going back again. Read Less

This is definitely one of the best animal hospitals in San Antonio!My poor baby was diagnosed with a heart murmur and throughout this whole process all the doctors AND the staff have been more than helpful. If you know me, you know that I don't do the whole "kid" thing but I do have strong "maternal" feelings for my dog, Remy LeBeau.  He's my pride and joy and the coolest dog that's ever walked the Earth so when his signature strut turned into a slow waddle and he started whining for seemingly no reason, I mother-hen'd that shh and took him to the nearest veterinarian.  I first found Deerfield Animal Hospital through trusty ol' Yelp and when I called explaining Remy's condition, they were helpful and said there would be a room waiting for us.  Both Dr. Young and Dr. Grabel made this stressful situation less so for me and more importantly, for Remy.  While they fully explained the possible causes and walked me through xray images, they also were extremely gentle with Remy.  Deerfield also offers a convenient 7:30am drop-off which worked out great when Remy had to be sedated for an xray. Because I can be a chronic worrier, I called their office twice to get a progress report and instead of getting a one-word answer from a tech, I was patched through to the vets themselves where they calmly described Remy's condition. Remy is on the road to recovery and I can't thank Deerfield enough.  Everyone from the support staff to technicians to veterinarians was so genuine and welcoming.  While I hope not to be back for an emergency visit, it's comforting to know that such an awesome animal hospital is only a block away. I have only been here one time (last week). But it was so refreshing, I have been looking for a nice place to bring my cats when I noticed this clinic (which was right around the corner from me). I called to make an appointment, and I was greeted nicely and they set me up to see Dr. Hey at my convenience. Everything went smoothly.The receptionist were very nice, helped me fill out all the necessary paper work. They called to remind me of my appointment the day before, they even reminded me to bring in any important medical information or vaccination history (which I would have totally not have brought). Dr. Hey was very prompt with his scheduled time. I think I had talked with him personally the entire 30 minute appointment. I had arrived a little early and a technician had checked me in. I was very impressed with how knowledgable the technician was. He made sure I knew what we were doing today (a check up and vaccines). He then asked if I was only any kind of flea or heartworm control. Well little did I realize that cats could get heartworms too!!! (It may be obvious to some... but not for me!) He explained that there was a prevention that not only protected my cats from fleas, but from heartworm too. He even gave me a pamphlet on it, BUT he explained Everything!!! Needless to say I got that prevention (mosquito season is coming up and they are the ones who transfer heartworms to our pets). Next Dr. Hey came in. He review my cats long medical history. Asked some follow up questions and gave me a list of options that he would recommend based on what he saw in my cats history, but were not necessary. He then thoroughly examined my cat. He checked the tips of the ears down to the tip of his tail. He told me that my cat looked great and then vaccinated him right in front of me. He answered all of my questions, he explained everything to me. He made me feel very confident that my animal was in good hands. I would recommend this hospital to everyone!!! Read Less
