We went in there with our puppy for his 2nd shot. They didn't greet us at all and had a bit of attitude, this was from the two girls up front. Told them we needed to get his 2nd shot and she immediately informed us that the doctors usually leave at 6 and it was 615 and they close at 7. She said there was one doctor available and maybe he could see the puppy. She then asked us where he got his first shot we told her it was self administered from the people we got him from at 6 weeks, she immediately said oh well we don't accept self administered shots he would have to start all over as if it was his first. We said that's fine but we need to get him his shot so she goes and asked the doctor if he has time, she comes back and says that he will do it. She then asked us if we wanted to do a poop sample test, we said no we just want the shot. So she tells us to fill out a form and my wife then asked her how much was it going to be before we fill out anything, the girl then says it's going to be 101 dollars! That's when we were like for 1 shot, she then says it's cause 56 dollars is for the first time exam cause he's never been there before and for the disposal of the needle! That's when I was like I've had dogs all my life and am not from San Antonio but I've never been charged for an exam unless I've asked for one. She then says that's their policy. I looked at my wife and at this point we just wanted to get his shot and I asked her if she wanted to go ahead and pay and she said let's just do it. So right before we get to signing the form my Wife asked her about a dewormer and the girl then says that in order for them to give him one we would have to do the poop test, that's when I was like wow I never heard of this, we even ordered those online before, she then says let me see if the doctor will give him one without the test! At that moment we had enough and just decided to leave went a couple of miles out and waited for about 2 hours at another vet and had no problems the doctors there checked our puppy out heard his heart beat checked his gums teeth body and gave him his dewormer and shot and payed only for that. They told us the same thing since we didn't have proof of first shot they had to start him over like if it were his first, but they didn't try and rape us for hundreds of dollars! I wish we would of had a good experience here cause it's so close to our home but I'd rather spend my hard earned money at a place that is fair and treats you well! Read Less

I brought my dog here for a second opinion for a mass he'd had on his rear for 6 weeks that would bleed off and on and was causing him a lot of discomfort. I'd taken him to Banfield 3x and he'd seen 2 different vets who said they didn't know what it was. Dr. Nanez at DeZavala-Shavano Veterinary Clinic saw my dog and was able to confidently give a diagnosis immediately after examining my pet. He also took the time to educate me on the diagnosis, the benefits of neutering my pet, fully explained the procedure to remove the mass, and answered all of my questions. I was given an estimate with an itemized breakdown that Dr. Nanez reviewed with me. The price was very reasonable as the other hospital quoted me just a little less to ONLY do a biopsy and after that would discuss treatment options. Who knows how much I would've spent had I not come here. We went on Monday for the exam and had the mass removed and my dog neutered today. Dr. Nanez called me after the procedure to update me and instructed me on aftercare. I also loved the atmosphere at this clinic, it's very warm and welcoming and even my super anxious dog seemed calm here! I can already tell the difference in my guy. I'd highly recommend this clinic and Dr. Nanez and will definitely be switching to this clinic. Read Less

Been taking my dog here since we bought him. In fact his first visit was at the original deZavala location. Ever since then we have been taking him to the same vet. Now even though he is terrified of the vet, I know he not I wouldn't trust anyone else with his care and needs. It's gotten to the point that they know his name as soon as his fluffy but walks through the door lol. He is always treated with love and understanding, never muzzling him but turning his head away with the nurses arm. They always Address  any concern I may have, even indulging the ones that I will admit may be a little unnecessary but important to me. They always have all his medication ready to be filled and always seem to be able to pull up his file pretty readily. I couldn't see anyone else treating my dog as nicely as they do and I would suggest any new people to try this veterinarian service first I promise I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else. Read Less

This is a review about their boarding service. I sent my 5-year-old Australian shepherd there for boarding when I was away during Memorial weekend. This is the third time we used their boarding service. The first time was great. Second time, he came home with a diarrhea which lasted only a day so I didn't think it's a big deal, probably stress. This time, he came back with wounds all over his chin and two patches on his feet. A friend of mine picked him up for me cause my flight arrived later in the evening. When he picked him up, he just got a bill with medication charges with ZERO EXPLANATION (I paid the boarding fee up front). He asked what happened and the stuff could not figure it out and at the end they just said he was like this when he was sent in, which is not true. AND no one called me any time during his stay. So I called them first thing in the morning and talked to the vet. She said he must have developed some kind of allergy and started scratching. They noticed when they bathe him on Tuesday (the day I was supposed to pick him up) and that's why they did not call. I will post pictures of the wounds which I apologize may be disturbing. It's obvious that he has been scratching for a while to develop wounds this bad and they had to give him shot and antibiotics. HOWEVER no one noticed his scratching and no one bothered to put a cone on him which could totally prevent him from further hurting himself!! The vet told me this is because they have over 150 boarders in their facility during the long weekend and my dog has a long fur so it's not obvious to notice. I do not want say anything bad although I really want to. This is what I experienced and I just want to let people know. So here is what I learned personally , 1. do not expect them taking good care of your fur baby if they have "too many" boarders. They are just responsible to keep them alive. 2. Do not expect to get calls for what happened and just pay for whatever they did at the end without any explanation. 3. Do not expect them to notice your pet may have lesions on him if he has a long fur. Read Less

I can't stress enough how wonderful Dr. Wilcox and staff are. We have a big dog, she is a Saint Bernard named Catalina who weighs 150 pounds. She started having problems after her last cycle, on Monday I took her to our regular Vet and they did a sonogram she had open Pyometra, this is an infection of the uterus, this is a life threatening condition, the only way to cure this is to have a complete hysterectomy. Our vet sent us to a place to have the surgery but when we got there we were told the procedure would be over $3,000.00 this is something that we could not afford, we applied and was denied for care credit. I also located a foundation that would pay for the cost of the surgery but the vet did not want to work with the foundation. So after a three hour wait at the other place they told us the best they could do was give us antibiotics and take her home, The next day I called my veterinarian, who I have been with for over 10 years to see if they could do the surgery, by this time it was considered emergency. If the open Pyometra closed her uterus would have ruptured so we were working against time. My vet clinic wouldn't make arrangements to do the surgery, they wouldn't even offer an in house payment plan, this really upset me because I think of all of my animals as family. Catalina has been seen there since she was a puppy and I couldn't believe that they were not willing to help us in our time of need. I posted our quandary on Facebook and a friend recommended DeZavala Vet Clinic. My daughter in law called and was in shock when we were told how much the cost of the surgery would be for Catalina she had to ask again because the price was so low!! They had us bring her in and they did the surgery on her within the hour, they knew this was a life or death situation and also they waited on payment until when we would pick her up, everywhere else wanted the money upfront before they would even do the surgery. I learned a lesson in the last week, one that almost cost me my dog. All the other places that we took Catalina to only saw money, something to add to their bottom line. I also learned that people who are in a situation like mine and willing to do anything to save their pet put into a situation where they can easily be taken advantage of. What I mean is if one vet charges $3,500 - $6,000 for a surgery how can another charge a price that is only 1/4 of what the others wanted to charge me? It reminds me of when we lose a loved one, we want the best for that loved one, and price is no object to what we are willing to spend, the same can be said when it comes to our pets. Dr. Wilcox took excellent care of Catalina! I could tell when I walked in that the staff truly care about animals and owners. I am now making a business decision of my own, that is to move all of my animals over to this practice, sadly we will be saying goodbye to a vet that I thought cared about my pets, sadly they only cared about how good my credit card was. I needed someone desperately to help my dog and Dr. Wilcox was there every step of the way with us. This was a major surgery for our Catalina, Dr. Wilcox calmed our fears and anxieties and gave the best possible care. From now on our pets will only be coming to this practice, because my animals are not just animals they are part of our family! Read Less

After having a bad experience with the first vet we visited since moving to San Antonio we are so happy with Dr. Harrison at DeZavala-Shavano Vet Clinic. The staff is friendly and attentive - when you have an appointment you are immediately taken back to an exam room and taken care of. The facility is very nice, clean, and well maintained. From experience I find that clinics/providers that take care of their facilities and front desk staff well tend to be better in all other aspects and make more of an effort to take care of their patients all together. Dr. Harrison was great at explaining his thought process and procedures thoroughly including pricing information so nothing was done without my approval and understanding. He did a great job at treating my dogs well and making sure they weren't scared or overwhelmed during the exam. The clinic also provides boarding which I would absolutely recommend. We've used other kennels before and our dogs (who are normally pretty laid back) were terrified when we came to pick them up. This clinic treated the dogs so well they hardly even noticed we were gone. They also give the dogs a bath on the last day of boarding so they come home fresh and clean and looking great. I would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone looking for a great veterinarian who knows what they're doing in caring for your pets. I would also recommend this place based on its reasonable and competitive pricing and the quality of services provided. We are so happy Dr. Harrison was recommended to us and we will not be using any other vet clinic as long as we are in San Antonio. Read Less

We love Dr. Harrison! We started visiting DeZavala-Shavano out of convenience when our oldest golden was undergoing chemo and needed weekly vet visits, but we have switched to full time here because of the care we received. They were great through the sickness and eventual loss of our sweet Zeke. They are mindful of costs and only do expensive procedures when they feel it's necessary, which is great because my other golden, Phoenix, is prone to allergies and colitis so is seen a couple times a year outside of normal exams. They are patient with my "less than tame" rescue dog, Teddy. They can usually squeeze us in quickly if any of our pets are sick and need to be seen on short notice. We always ask for Dr. Harrison, but have seen a couple of the other vets when he didn't have availability and have always been pleased. Read Less

I didn't yet have a designated vet in San Antonio so I took him to the Banfield Clinic. They were going to run some diagnostic checks and figure out what was wrong with him by doing X-rays, Sonograms, and blood work, before treatment, the total was going to be almost $400. At the insistence of my grandfather I took Duncan here for a second opinion and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Nunez was knowledgeable, his approach is scientific and he wants to make sure that you understand everything before he begins treatment. It turns out that it was just a really bad UTI, Banfield wouldn't have seen this through the tests they wanted to run. Now I have a happy and healthy puppy again! And I found my vet in San Antonio. I really hate to do this.... the staff is wonderful here. I have to agree with the user Bryan M though. Which is why i am giving them a 2 star not a 1. I didn't hate the service nor the people, they were all very nice and they loved my Dane. The reason for the rating is my pup has been suffering from diarrhea, skin irritations, and a low grade fever of 102.7- which is apparently normal for dogs. I took him in as for the last 2 days his bowel movements have been much much worse. They did a fecal exam and gave me the all clear. It must be the food and gave me some for sensitive stomachs. Well this morning and last night the movements were even worse so my girlfriend took him to her dogs vet. The same vet she has used for years. 5 mins in and the fecal exam came back positive for hookworms and also a skin fungus. My pup was in pain, which the vet pointed out easily just by his posture. Something this vet failed to point out- just like they failed to point out he had hookworms- and a skin fungus. Again-- great people. They just failed me where I can not tolerate a failure. My checkbook doesn't fail, so i can not let a service i am paying for and entrusting with the life of a cherished pet fail me. Maybe your pet's visit/diagnosis will be different.Read Less

The vet from the de zavala clinic told me everything was normal and I believed her from the bottom of my heart. But she lied to me about my cat. I was fortunate enough to have my cat die in my arms in peace when my new vet told me what would happen. I wanted to tell my story so if anyone brought their loving pet to the De Zavala Clinic, please find another clinic that will not only care for your pet but love em at the same time. This place only care about money, not about animals.Read Less

Growing up in San Antonio we always took our pets to see Dr. Harrison. Even though I no longer live there I recently needed to bring one of my cats to San Antonio to see a heart specialist, living 6 hours away and not having some where to keep her with me, I was able to board her at this vet clinic on short notice and with out any idea of how long it would be. The staff took very good care of her in their ICU and even gave her all her new medications so I wouldn't have to the day we headed home. We will hopefully be coming back for her 6 month check up and I will for sure be boarding her here for our stay.Read Less

Not exactly sure how they have such high rating. I went twice and found the staff in the front to be rude and they just sit and don't greet you nor does it seem they know how to smile (except the girl who does the billing collections). When you call to book appointments they are blunt and you can tell they just want to get off the phone, that is if they don't immediately put you on hold as soon as they pick up. I just didn't get the vibe that they were animal lovers as they didn't even care for the pets who would walk in as opposed to my normal vet where they pick up your pets and hug them and they just make you feel comfortable and like your pet is really cared for. Anyway, I live really close to here now and wanted to switch to this vet since it was convenient and they had good reviews. I took my dog because she seemed to have what appeared to be an ear infection. The doctor said no, it was only a little bit of dirt and normal stuff. So they gave me expensive drops to clean out her ear. It didn't work. The weird dark gooey stuff persisted after a week so I called them back and asked if they could see her again cause it wasn't going away. The girl put me on hold and when she got back on the line said the doctor would prescribe her an antibiotic. I don't understand how you can prescribe without seeing her again if he had just said it was nothing but dirt. So basically they did not want to see her, just give me medicine and try that out. It still didn't work so I went back to my normal vet and they took care of it! I won't go back here. I really hope their customer service and the service provided by the vets improves for the sake of their patients and owners. Read Less

I am so thankful to have taken my cat to DeZavala Shavano vet. A family member had initially taken him to another vet, and the wait for his follow-up on a Saturday was going to be 3 hours. I took him to this vet (I frequently pass on the way home) and they were able to see him immediately. He was diagnosed with a blood disease and Dr. Wilcox was very informative and helpful- clearly a huge pet lover. They are going the extra mile by following up with my cat every day this week for feedings. My cat is on day 3 of recovery and I know they are doing everything they can to help. It is also a huge help to be able to drop him off in the morning before work and pick him up later in the afternoon. They are flexible with payments as well. Read Less

Read Less

Our previous vet retired so it we had to find a new one. I asked people on Facebook and a friend recommended Dezavala-Shavano Vet Clinic. She has taken her animals there for a long period of time, so that was a good recommendation. My husband I took our dog and met with Dr. Harrison and the staff. We were impressed and scheduled a dental cleaning for our dog.The procedure was over quickly and she walked out like nothing had happened to her. In addition, the price they estimated was the price we paid. She will be returning for any future boarding or medical needs. Read Less

The middle-aged woman with the pink/purple ring is ridiculously rude. I am only keeping my boarding reservation because I've had no luck finding another place as nice as theirs to board my pups during the holiday. We love Dr. Read Less

We have 7 rescue pets, 5 cats and 2 dogs, and DeZavala-Shavano Vet has been great to work with.  They are reasonable, offer a multi-pet discount, and don't insist on things I can't afford (such as the ANNUAL rabies shot when there is also a 3-year rabies shot...savings!!)We've used their veterinary and bathing services, and they're both great.  Just wish they had a groomer and we could keep everything in-house!  They have lots of availability and once fit ALL of my fur children in on the same day when they mysteriously all got worms...eeeewwwww!!!!  Gross!!!  Expensive trip to vet later, worms were eradicated.  Thank you!I also love them because they're okay with working with my outdoor kitty who while I wouldn't say is "feral" is definitely harder to handle than my other indoor kitties.  Not every vet is outdoor-cat friendly so kudos to them! I could not be happier with my experience here. Dr. Nunez was a godsend to me. I came home from work one day during lunch and my dog, Duncan, was peeing blood uncontrollably.

Even though the entire staff acts professional and courteous in the beginning, all they care about is making money. My cat was suffering from chronic kidney disease and they failed to mention that crucial part to me. I found this out from another veterinary, explaining to me that my cat was suffering from this disease for quite some time. I had to put my cat down due to her kidney disease.

Read Less
